Kernel_task cpu usage and fans on high (slow system)

Ok so I have a fairly new MacBook Pro that is acting up. It is probably 2 months old and I noticed the kernel_task has spiked using majority of cpu (system% is in the 90's). So I went through cleaning out cache, temp files, trash, etc... then removed newly installed apps. When I go into Safe Mode my system runs fine but the fans still sound like they are on high. So I thought maybe there was a software problem.... I erased the OS and reinstalled it and it is doing the same thing w/ a new OS install. Safe Mode works fine but kernal_task still eating cpu in normal mode.
What else is there to do? I read some people having issues w/ MacBook Air with a hardware issue causing this same issue, but wouldn't it seem software related if Safe Mode works fine?

Why does everyone reinstall their OSX? It rarely fixes issues, and you really wasted some time in doing so.
The kernel task issue is something you need to diagnose one step at a time. I had the same thing, found out it was one program that was causing it. I contacted the developer, they saw the same thing on i7 MBP's, and they put out an update a few weeks later.
But if you're saying that you have a kernel task that is taking up your system resources without any programs running, including background tasks, then you might have a hardware issue. Take it back to Apple if you can't find a program that's causing it.

  • High Kernel_task CPU usage when charging

    Hey,
    When I put my adapter in my macbook to charge i have a high cpu usage(500-650%).
    When I switch back to the battery then after 10sec - 30sec my kernel_task go back to normal 2%cpu usage.
    And then when I had 1 high CPU usage my Fans of my macbook won't turn off even if i have 2% cpu usage.
    I have a early 2011 macbook pro 15" with standard Lion installed AMD Radeon 6490M version.
    I tried the 2 resets and that didnt worked tried to reinstall worked for 1 week and then it came back.
    I hope somebody can help me.

    Changing the mother board is the best way to go for the simple reason that the Mac laptops are a very integrated system. Swapping out components on the motherboard would take very skilled people and they get paid large amounts of money. Apple technicians cannot do the job. Swapping out the MB is the most cost effective way.
    For Apple, that motherboard is very inexpensive. The labor to swap it as a complete unit is by far the cheapest way for Apple rather than diagnosing and swapping out individual components. If you have ever done any surface mount component replacement this would not be hard to see.

  • High CPU Usage and Temperature

    I've recently purchased a MacBook with the latest updates, including the firmware for the random shutdowns but lately when I boot the MacBook up, the fans kick on and it reads 83 degrees Celsius with about 65% CPU Usage and I don't have anything running except what came on the MacBook in itself, any suggestions?? Apple told me to take it in to have it looked at but I was wondering if there is anything I can fix perhaps?? Thank you

    Sometimes when I connect an external drive which I have made drastic file changes to, there are two process that eat up a lot of cpu power and get the macbook really hot for awhile, those two processed are related to the way spotlight tries to re-index the external drive or the internal hd itself if I had made drastic changes to it too.
    Could it be that?
    You can see them show up in Activity Monitor, they are mdimport and another one starting with md(something) too.
    Hope that helps (if that's the issue)
    Best,

    High CPU usage and multiple jobs created while streaming data via a java applet from a secure/certified website.  CPU usage is normal for a few minutes then suddenly jobs multiply and CPU usage climbs on one of the jobs.
    Jobs with the following command begin to multiply in my job queue with one job showing CPU usage at 368% and staying resident in memory (yeah, a long one):

    Here is a good tutorial on Java.  Evidently, what I called "jobs" is referred to as processes and threads in this tutorial.  The tutorial states that multithreaded execution is an essential feature of the Java platform which explains the avalanche of threads I observe.  However, I am still stumped at what causes the avalanche of threads and excessive CPU consumption for such a mediocre task.  Also the system log says that IcedTea has an error stating "Application title was not found in manifest. Check with application vendor".   I interpret this to mean that IcedTea does not recognized some application.  What application?  .....the applet?

  • USB/FireWire usage increases CPU temp and fan speed

    Hi,
    I'm curious, does the usage of USB and FireWire ports increase CPU temperature and fan speed...?
    I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface plugged in and whenever I play any songs from iTunes using that interface as an output, my CPU temp increased and fan speed jumped from 2000 to 3300 rpm. And on separate occasion, an 8GB of file transfer from an external FireWire-based HDD had both fans speed up to 4,400 rpm.
    Is this normal...? All these were done with an external display plugged onto the MBP with "clamshell" mode.

    USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
    Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
    The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.
    Cheers

  • Satellite C855 - Average CPU temperature and fan speed

    Hello!
    I've had this toshiba Satellite C855 since march this year. it's only recently that the CPU temp and Fan speeds have been worrying me.
    When I'm not playing games or doing a livestream my CPU temp stays around 35-40% with the fanspeed at steady 50% or not on at all due to it been cool.
    When I do play games however the fanspeed is going up to around 66-68% with the CPU been around 55-60%
    I was wondering if this is normal? or do I need to clean it out by taking it apart. if it is the second option then I am worried since I do not want to damage anything inside. plus I am not that great with the inner workings of a computer.
    Any help or information would be very appreciated thanks.

    In my opinion there is no reason for panic. T is logic that under stress CPU activity is higher and CPU produces more heat. Notebook must be cooled down properly so sensors that control cooling fans register growing temperature and cooling fans will run on higher speed.
    There is no reason for cleaning. And one day if that must be done please dont do it alone. You are not authorized for doing this.

  • How to monitor CPU usage and performance on a Hyper-V server with several VM's

    I have a server that is running Windows 2008 64 bit Hyper-V, with 8 gigs of RAM and Intel Xeon X3440 @ 2.53 Ghz, which gives me 8 logical cores in the performance monitor on the host system.
    I have set up three Virtual Machines, all running Windows 2008 32 bit.
    Build server, running Team City
    Staging server
    SQL Server, running SQL Server 2005
    I have some troubles with the setup in that the host monitor remains responsive at all times, even though the VM's are seemingly working at 100% cpu and are very sluggish and unresponsive. (I have asked a separate question about that.)
    So the question here is: What is the best way to monitor how the physical CPU's are actually utilized? The reason I am asking is that I am being told that i cannot reliably use the task manager to monitor CPU usage in a VM.

    First, you have to remember that in Hyper-V that the "host" is called a parent partition and it really just like a virtualized guest with special permissions and roles. Just like any other child/guest, when you open up Task Manager, you can not see the CPU
    usage of the other children on the server.
    Ben Armstrong has a good explanation of this here:http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/02/28/hyper-v-virtual-machine-cpu-usage-and-task-manager.aspx
    To summarize his post, you need to check three things to get an accurate picture of CPU utilization:
    View the CPU usage on each guest - this is available through Hyper-V Manager or Performance Monitor.
    CPU usage due to context switching - this is the perfmon counter called % Hypervisor Run Timeunder Hyper-V Hypervisor Virtual Processor
    Child partition worker process - vmwp.exe running on the parent partition (1 per child). This handles Hyper-V operations like saving
    state.

    Built this system last week when i install core center I get no 3.3 v readings. cpu temp plays between 18c to 60c and the fan speed from 800 t0 6000rpm. Well sorry to say I solved the problem for good. Contacted MSI support. Only answer I got was Maybe the board was bad. Got it exchanged from the store and got an Asus av8 deluxe rev.2 instead. Everything runs fine. It was my first MSI board and sad to say it gave me a lot of headaches and configeration problems. The new setup ran great on the first try. Don't  think I will buy MSI again in the near future.

  • High CPU usage and continuously running fan

    I recently sent off a logicboard to be repaired for a non-charging issue.  Everything worked fine with the exception of the battery would not charge.  I received the board back today and noticed immediately that the fan starts running at high speed within 10 seconds of pushing the power button.  It also boots extremely slow and when it does finally, eveything takes forever to open.  It seems to operate better in safe mode but the fan is still running at about 6200 rpm.  Using iStat, I noticed that the temperature itself is not that bad.   The CPU is running at about 32 C.  And it doesn't feel hot to the touch at all.  But the fan never shuts off.  I have tried an SMC reset and PRAM reset, no joy.   I tried a new hard drive, still no joy.  When I can finally get into Activity Monitor, it says that Kernel_task is using upwards of 200% of the CPU.  Any suggestions on what I can try to get this kernel_task issue corrected and get the fan to slow back down?  Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed on this.

    I was able to run the Apple Hardware Test and the error is:
    4SNS/1/C0000008: TsOP- - 124
    Apparently that has something to do with a temperature sensor.  Of course, I can't find any information on how to replace it or even where it might be located.   Don't even know if it's replaceable.  Can't believe I just got this logic board back from being "fixed" and it's not "fixed!

  • High CPU usage and program slowing down

    Hi. I have helped write a program in AS3 that uses classes. We have 2 frames in our movieclip that consists of an ant moving. We have a class of ants and can create 15 instances of them and the program runs fine with the ants walking around looking for food and going back to a corner that is their nest and going back out again. The ants also respond to mouse movement if the mouse pointer is near an ant.
    If we create more than 15 ants, then the program starts to slow down. If we have 30 ants on the screen, then there is noticable stuttering of the ant movement. The CPU usage on a P4 2.5Ghz Pentium is around 50%.
    Is this normal? or is something wrong?
    I would have thought we would be able to scale up the number of ants easily.
    Thanks
    Trev.

    Hi kglad.
    Thanks for the reply.
    I assume enabling cacheAsBitmap is set in the ant class Constructor, as we have tried that and it has helped, see below. We can now create 30 ants with very slight stuttering.
    We have an  ant class as below.
    public class TAnt extends MovieClip { // lots of code here }
    ant Constructor as below.
    public function TAnt(newX: Number, newY: Number, sW: Number, sH: Number, rCyc: Number) {
                this.cacheAsBitmap = true;
               // more code here }
    // We have implemented a Finite State Machine for the ant behaviour.
    regarding the ants using a loop and using a controller class, I am not sure what you mean.
    We are creating instances of the ants in the Ants.fla file which is in the Action file and add each new ant to an array. See below.
    for (var a = 0; a < nAnts; a++) {
        var newAntX = Math.random() * screenWidth;        // randomly generate ant location
        var newAntY = Math.random() * screenHeight;
        var rCyc = Math.random() * 800;
        var ant = new TAnt(newAntX, newAntY, screenWidth, screenHeight, rCyc);            // create ant
        addChild(ant);                                                   // add ant so visible on screen
        ants.push(ant);                                                 // add ant to array
    So we use an array for looping through the ants in the Ants.fla Action file.
    Is this the way you mean?
    Thanks
    Trev.

    Rundll32.exe Using High CPU on Windows 8.1
    I use a Lenovo T440s laptop for my service calls and when I need to do work remotely. My laptop runs Windows 8.1 Professional. I love this laptop and it has proved to be tough as well as extremely fast. I noticed a couple weeks ago that my battery was going dead after about an hour of usage. I also noticed that my cooling fan in the laptop was running louder than normal. I decided to open Task Manger on my laptop to see what the issue was. I soon noticed that a process called rundll32.exe was using around 25 percent of my CPU. I killed the process and everything returned to normal.
    A few days later, my battery was going dead very rapidly. My cooling fan was on almost constantly and was blowing warm air. I opened Task Manger and sure enough, rundll32.exe was using 25% of my CPU again. I killed the process and everything was fine. It wasn’t long and my laptop was doing the exact same thing as I described before. I decided it was time to get to the bottom of this issue. Here is how I troubleshot what program was using the rundll32.exe and in the process was killing my battery.
    Step One: I downloaded Process Explorer. This is an excellent tool. It is similar to Task Manager but goes into way more depth on the processes and dlls that are running. I extracted the download and then ran Process Explorer as an administrator.
    Step Two: One of the first things I noticed was rundll32.exe was using 23 percent of my CPU again.
    I right-clicked on the rundll32.exe process and selected properties. I clicked on the Image tab and at once saw the culprit. A utility to monitor and gauge my battery usage, called PwrMgrBkGndMonitor, was draining my battery instead of saving it.
    Step Three: After a little digging around in my installed programs I located a program called Lenovo Settings Dependency Package. PwrMgrBkGndMonitor was installed in the Lenovo Settings Dependency Package.
    I didn’t use this program and decided I didn’t need it. I uninstalled the program and restarted my laptop. I haven’t had a problem with the rundll32.exe using up my CPU since I uninstalled Lenovo Settings Dependency Package.
    If you are experiencing the same symptoms has stated above and you are running a Lenovo laptop with Windows 8.1, this may be your issue. However, before you uninstall the program I would recommend using Process Explorer. Process Explorer will help you determine the exact program that is giving you issues before blindly uninstalling and killing services. I hope my troubleshooting steps can help you find program is making rundll32.exe use high CPU usage. Let me know in the comments if this helped you!

    I am able to work OK with office, I'm using the 'old version' Microsoft Office v.X, not much details in the About Box, just listed as MSoft Word/Excel/etc for Mac service release 1.
    I get the occasional crash, and I have seen Word in particular use 90% of a single core and amazingly large virtual memory usage, gigabytes sometimes, but eventually the document gets printed.
    It shows how useful the dual core (or quad) cpu approach is!
    One cpu for Word to print, and one cpu to run the rest of my applications/life!
    I still use this old office rather than re-booting into Window§ for whatever is the latest version of office.
    Doing some playing with a similar one page document in Office v.X and Pages 2.01, I get Word using about 25% of a core , Pages using 5%, - whilst editing; Intel native Pages has 20% of a core and 80MB ram 480 virtual whilst printing, Word has about 100% of a core and 65MB ram 650 virtual whilst printing, but it is a powerPC code so Rosetta is in there somewhere.

  • YEARS-old issue with slow play, 100% cpu usage, and conspiracy theories

    I've had the same issue for YEARS now, with flash videos (like on youtube) and games starting out okay, but after a little while, they just start to stutter and slow way down, while the CPU usage goes up to ridiculous levels. The browser doesn't matter, firefox or chrome, online content or run off the local hard drive. I have the latest flash player, and this has been a problem ever since at least version 9. I'm using XP. I think version 8 never had this issue, but unfortunately all recent games and youtube videos won't run with version 8. Adobe did something with recent versions of flash player that causes this issue now. Google search and you'll see countless threads from people with all kinds of computers with all kinds of specs having the exact same issue.
    There has never been an entry in the Adobe knowledgebase about it, despite the persistence of this problem.
    It's like it's a coverup or something. The more I think about it, the more it reminds me about when the Netscape browser was caught secretly uploading information to their servers and resulting in browser slowdowns. Is flash player doing the same thing? Adobe has already been caught out with spyware-like activities with Photoshop connecting to Omniture through the flash-enabled splash screens that were purposely disguised to look like they were innocently connecting to a user's local system, but in fact connecting to stat and online marketing sites. Is this why this years-old problem has never been addressed in any official way? Now I'm just rambling. I want a fix. It's been years now that I haven't been able to enjoy more than a few minutes worth of flash content.
    At this point, even if Adobe shrugged their shoulders and said "yeah, we know about the problem but we have no idea how to fix it" would be better than nothing at all.
