Kernel_task eating CPU with MotorolaSM56 modem

Dear Apple Discussions,
I recently got a fifth generation (1.67GHz) 15'' Aluminum PowerBook.
Whenever I connect to the internet via dial-up my kernel_task goes up to 30%CPU usage (just connected, not doing anything). This does not occur if I connect to the internet via ethernet (AirPort has not been tested thus far).
This does not occur with my first generation (1.25GHZ) 15'' Aluminum PowerBook (just has been downgraded to 10.3.9).
When comparing the two laptop's I noticed that the "older" model has a InternalUSBModem.kext (v2.6.3) driver for the modem, while my newer PB has a MotorolaSM56K.kext (v1.3.3) driver.
The kicker comes with my first generation (1.8GHz) iMac G5. It also has a MotorolaSM56K.kext (v1.3.1) driver for the modem and it too has a kernel task which eats up 40% of the CPU when connected to the internet (just connected, not doing anything).
I have read on the news groups about the kernel task - but to no real avail.
I have turned off IPv6 to no effect.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
AppleMonkey

Thanks for the response, at least that makes more sense now.
A little irritating that 30% of my processor is used by the modem, hopefully they won't do that with the ethernet as well.

  • Kernel_task eats CPU when MIDI system wakes up

I have a MacBook Pro and a Focusrite Saffire (connected via firewire).
Noticed that the latest 10.5's are eating a ton of cpu when running Logic (or Ableton Live, my other DAW).
Digging around, using Activity Monitor I see:
when I plug in my Saffire, kernel_task jumps from 2% cpu to about 7%.
when I start Logic/Live, it jumps to 45-50% cpu and stays there (regardless of whether or not sound is being input or output).
Digging a little deeper, with no DAW running, I fire up Audio/MIDI Setup and switch the default output to the Saffire... kernel_task steady at 7%. Click on the MIDI Devices tab and kernel_task jumps up into the forties. Unplugging the Saffire, the cpu load goes down. Replugging, it does not go back up until I click "Rescan MIDI".
I have no MIDI devices connected to the Saffire (nor do I have any midi cables with which to try that experiment).
Using dtrace, I could probably dig more but I'm not on Apple's payroll and I'm too old to hack for free. I'd rather make music.
Fingers crossed that this can be fixed cause half a core is better used in a soft synth or something.

  • Help Kernel_task eating CPU and MBP running hot since 10.6.3

    Hi Guys,
Need some real help here. My laptop has become almost unusable here because the CPU goes up to 100% and the culprit is kernel_task.
Ive noticed it slightly after installing 10.6.3. CPU runs up to 108c degrees Celsius.
    Ive tried reseting PRAM
Ive tried reinstalling OS with a time machine backup
Getting very annoyed. Is there anything I can try?

I tried a reset SMC and a reboot afterwards. However that did not resolve the problem.
Havent really been hearing the fans lately. CPU is 79C celcius.
As i said in my post previously, it is the kernel_task process that is using up the majority of the CPU.

  • KACPID eating CPU on a 6250 blades with SLES 10 SP1

    Hi all,
We have just installed Sles 10 SP1 with OES2 addon on a 6250 blade and it seems that kacpid process is eating CPU (starts with 25 %) cycles.
This process cannot be killed en wil eat more cycles after time. After 2 days is allocating almost two cores.
The latest bios is installed (V11) en we are running kernel 2.6.16.54-0.2.11.
It might be a acpi problem.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

Same problem here with SLES 9 SP4.
And by the way, booting with acpi=ht might help, although it disables most of the power saving features.

My external display is a Samsung PX2370 connected to my MBP using an HDMI cable with a HDMI-to-miniDP adapter
I first noticed this after the last EFI update several months back. At first I thought kernel_task eats up too much cpu cycles whenever an external display is attached, but it turns out this only happens when the external display is set to 1080p. When external display is set to 720p, kernel_task is pretty much normal (~5% cpu usage) but rises up to ~150% cpu usage once the external display is set to 1080p.
kernel_task cpu usage is also with normal range when my MBP is connected to a Samsung LCD TV at 720p.
Anyone having the same problem or know of any fix/workarounds?

  • Swing application eats CPU on resume after standby

My application contains a mix of regular Swing components and about 200 (small) custom components (JPanels) that draw themselves. The problem is that if put my laptop into Standby, then restart it, the application eats CPU. It goes from ~4% pre standby to ~48% after standby. Totally repeatable. There is only the main thread, the AWT thread and a couple timers firing: one to get data from a server and one to redraw the custom controls to make the control blink (calls repaint() to cue up a call to paintComponent()). I put timing code in the two timer driven threads and both are running fine. NOTE: each of the custom components is just a rectangle with a short text string in it. Think checkerboard with text. The background color is all that is being changed. It's basically a grid of alarm/status "lights".
I did some searching and only found a reference to a drawing bug that was fixed back in 1.4.x that had to do with WinXP and dual-headed computers.
Note that another simple Swing application I wrote (no custom controls), doesn't appear to behave this way, so I suspect it has to do with the custom drawing stuff (rolling my own paintComponent() method).
Any thoughts on how to figure out what is eating the CPU? I'm using NetBeans 6.7 and JDK 1.6_14 under Windows XP.

It doesn't matter if it's a Swing timer or a Util timer. It behaves the same either way. That was one of the first things I tried.
I ended up refactoring the code to go from a grid of individual controls (think checker board where each square is a control that draws itself), to a single "board" control that draws a grid. That seems to have fixed the issue. I can go in/out of Standby and the app doesn't eat a ton of CPU any more. The real problem may still be there, just too small of an effect to notice.
I don't know why the original design would work fine before a Standby, but not after. Having ~200 little controls doing repaints twice a second must confuse something in the JVM/Windows versus having 4 large controls doing the same amount of drawing.
It's working, so time to move on.

    Hi again,
It's difficult for me to offer anymore than generalized advice but I'll try to be helpful.
I'd start by removing the existing modem and restarting the computer.  One of the error messages mentioned PCI Slot 1.  This is probably the modem.  If ALL the error messages go away it's a pretty good indication that the modem is the problem and replacement is in order.  I would attempt simply re-seating the modem in it's slot first however and restarting.
I'm pretty sure that the proper drivers would be found automatically for the existing modem.  If not, there's a rather generalized Readme file and a program called HXFSetup.exe which is probably the program you would need to run if required.
While you're in the computer, disconnecting and reconnecting things might be better than just a visual inspection.  Twisting the cooling fan housing on the  CPU with moderate force shouldn't hurt anything and who knows?
If it turns out that the modem is the problem (which I doubt), installing the other modem shouldn't be a problem, assuming it fits and you have the drivers for it.  Again, good luck.
    Jim
P.S.  If you haven't already done so, Google all the error messages and see if there seems to be any common element.  There are diagnostic programs available on the web but I've never found one that helped me with a trouble, perhaps someone has and can make a recommendation.

  • 3000 J - Problem with Internal Modem

    Hello,
I still live in the 90's and use dial-up service to access the internet.  My computer isn't recognizing (or there is a problem with) my modem.  I receive "Error 797" when trying to dial-up as I usually do.
The modem is HSF2014 56K Data Fax Modem.  Is there a way to obtain the driver software from Lenovo on CD-ROM, so I can try reinstalling?
    Thanks in advance!

I don't know if this will work but it's worth a try. I wonder if somehow you ended up with a short inside of your iPad. Give the things below are trying to see if that helps. Good luck.
    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.

  • Finder and loginwindow use 100% cpu with 10.6.8

I recently installed the patch to OS X 10.6.8 and now the finder is very unstable and uses 100% cpu and the loginwindow uses 100% cpu also.  Yes I have Parallels 6 on this machine but I already "un-checked" the "show windows applications in doc" option which is the recommended solution.  However, this did not fix the problem.  I do not know how to determine what actual process is causing this finder / loginwindow issue.  I very much appreciate if anyone has suggestion how to fix this problem.
This is on a mid-2011 MacBookPro.
    thank you.

TBauer, I had the same problem with 10.6.8 using 100% of the CPU with Parallels 6 installed.  The following steps solved this problem for me:
    0.  Take a screen shot of your Dock if you wish to remember it as currently set
    1. Launch Activity Monitor and click on the CPU column so you can see Dock using the CPU
    2.  Move   ///Users/ ...  /Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist to the trash
    3.  Click on Dock and click on Quit Process to stop the Dock
OS X will then rebuild the default Dock
    4.  Put the items back in the Dock that you want
That solved the problem for me yesterday morning.  I've launched Parallels 6 several times now and moved the machine from my work network to home and the 100% CPU problem hasn't returned.
Hope that works for you, too!
I don't think using the combo updater will solve the problem.  The problem appears to be a .plist that is generated with OS X 10.6.7 and earlier that contains icons of a larger than Apple documented size causes the CPU looping.  Rebuilding the dock.plist under OS X 10.6.8 appears to solve the problem.
Parallels has issued a knowledge bulletin saying they are looking into the problem.  On their web site they have another approach involving moving the offending icon out of the dock to solve the problem.  I like my solution better but theirs works, too.

  • Windows 7 doesn't work with verizon modem westell 6100

I have a new gateway 4869 desk top. it will go on the internet and connect with gateway support and outlook express but will not connect with any other site like ebay, amazon, etc.it goes to these sites and waits for a reply that never comes. the computer works ok when connected to the t1 connection at best buy. i have an old dell with xp that works fine with this modem and hookup.i also had this happen with a new hp desktop. gateway and hp are not able to fix this saying it is the modem. verizon says if modem works with xp it is ok. this modem is old and may not have recent drivers which i can't check cause cant go online.anyone else have this problem or solutions.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I run Win7 on my desktop & XP on my older Laptop, both Dell, connecting to the internet via the same  DSL LAN  router.  Had problens connecting to some sites on my desktop, but not on the laptop; both runnng the same Anti-virus software, but. firewall exception settings were different for managing program connections. My browser would attempt to make the connections and just keep running until timed out.
You mention that your older Dell running XP connects to the web via the same modem,  and verizon tech support states this proves the modem works properly.  I agree, otherwise your older PC wouldn't connect to the web either.  If it's not the hardware it must be the software  settings.  Your firewall settings may be interfering with the connections from being made. I suggest that you check the settings used with your Win7 firewall first. What internet security software are you running?  Mine allows personal firewall settings which overrides the basic Windows firewall.
I'd also check the internet option settings on your XP Dell and compare them to the settings on your newer PC to ascertain whether there's any difference.
While you may not be able to search for driver updates on the newer pc, you can use your Dell's XP pc for that purpose.
    Good luck.

  • Is this compatible with any modem?

My router is going out and I was going to replace it with the Airport Express but was wondering if it works with all modems.  I have DSL.

In short, yes. You just need an ADSL modem (I think the Draytek Vigor 120 is the best) so you can get an IP from your ISP. Once you've done that the Airport will take care of the rest. Don't forget the Express only has one Etheernet port and 10 concurrent wireless connections so if you think you'll need more than that go Extreme!

  • Plug-in order for connecting to internet via AP Extreme with cable modem?

    Help!
My internet's been a bit slow the past few days. I was scared to do anything because when I first got my Airport Extreme, it took me several days to figure out how to get connected, and it was highly frustrating. I remember that there was always a blinking orange light and some issue the utility couldn't identify, and the ultimate fix had something to do with unplugging and replugging my cable modem, but I'm not sure at what step in the process I did this.
Now, I tried unplugging and replugging the modem and though my base station was showing up in the list of networks under the Airport icon at the top of the screen, it kept saying there was an error when I tried to connect. Airport Utility wasn't even finding any base stations at all, so I tried several orders of unplug/replug to no avail. Each time, the green light was coming on but my computer couldn't find the base station and wouldn't connect to the network. I then tried the reset button (5 seconds). When I reset, the utility could find the base station, but I'm back to blinking amber and when I try to configure the base station, it says "the wireless network could not be found." Does anyone here know the magic order of the plugs? I'm using an Ethernet cable to connect from modem to base station and running Tiger on a Powerbook G4. Any help would really be appreciated!!

Is this a cable modem with a usb port? If so you are correct. It doesn't connect easily. You're better off with a modem that has an ethernet port. Now if you are referring to a Sprint Novatel U720 USB modem I can tell you it works.
