Kernel Task is slowing down MacBook Pro

Hi All,
I've been having a lot of issues with a very slow running MBP and everything freezes up every few minutes.  Right now I'm running Safari right now and the Kernel Task is using 516MB of Memory and my 4GB is almost entirely used.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  (Please keep in mind I'm not very computer savvy so simple, quick tips would be best for me!)

I just noticed that in addition to AVG, Avast and Sophos you also have Intego, this may be the most antivirus apps on one Mac that I have ever seen

  • External HDMI Monitor Slows Down Macbook Pro to Unbearable Speeds?

I have my 2011 17" macbook hooked up via a Moshi HDMI adapter to a 24" Acer 1080p monitor... While the image shows properly it makes the computer completely unuseable. I can't play videos and it lags up the machine really bad. I don't get it... i paid $3000+ for this machine and it can't output a smooth HDMI signal without crushing the system? Is this happening to anybody else? Any solutions?

Yeah i was just about to post the Activity monitor before / after results.... here is what happens.. the results are stunning to say the least:
    PRE-Thunderbolt-->HDMI Adapter:
    CPU:
    User - 1.5%
    System - 2.5%
    Idle - 96%
    Memory:
    Free : 5.9 gb
AFTER PLUGGING IN THE ADAPTER AND HOOKING UP THE MONITOR
    CPU:
ALL CORES JUMP TO 80% +
    %USER: 4.25
    % SYSTEM: 77.33%
    % IDLE : 16.70
    Memory remains stable.
    THE PROBLEM IS OBVIOUS.
Something is causing the system CPU to become completely innefecient. It takes about 10-30 seconds for this proccess to occur. At first, the CPU remains low, but as soon as any content hits the second screen every core jumps to being 70-80% occupied, and this is JUST with firefox running.
Any help? Could apple store do anything to help me out?

i tried to encrypt using file vault but it froze slowing my macbook pro, how can i get things moving or stop the encryption

Back up all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility.
In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. When prompted, enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.
Then, from the menu bar, select
              File ▹ Turn Off Encryption
    Enter the password again.
You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.
If you can't turn off encryption in Disk Utility because the menu item is grayed out, you'll have to erase the volume and then restore the data from a backup. Select the Erase tab, and then select

    from the Format menu.
You can then quit to be returned to the main Recovery screen. Follow these instructions if you back up with Time Machine. If you use other backup software, follow its developer's instructions.
Don't erase the volume unless you have at least two complete, independent backups. One is not enough to be safe.

  • Compressor is slow on Macbook Pro

Is anyone else noticing that compressor runs very slow on the macbook pros. We are using it to compress 22 minute standard def video files to quicktime 7>300k. The compressions run about twice as fast on a G5 comparred to a mac book pro.
I was reading this article and the testers seemed to have the same findings.
    http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=43717
Has anyone found out why compressor is so slow on macbook pros and/or how to fix it?
    Thanks!
    Dan

Laptops have fundamentally worse performance than desktops with smiilar specs. This is true on customs, Macs, Dells, HP, alienware, etc. I try not to use my laptop to do anythign demanding because I know I'll be waiting a while. As far as a technical reason, it may be best to keep trying with Apple support. Although I'm sure its similar, I only knos the technical reasons for PCs.

  • Lighting bolt port shuts down macbook pro

lighting bolt port shuts down macbook pro once the cable is pugged in. What is the cause of this problem

    Hi reginaldt,
If your Mac unexpectedly turns off when you plug in a cable (unclear if you are describing a USB Lightning cable or a Thunderbolt cable) and you have checked to make sure there is no debris in either the cable jack or port, you may want to try resetting the PRAM and SMC:

  • Painfully slow internet--MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I have a one year old MacBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.5. Within the last few weeks, my internet connection has become slower. In fact, my piece of crap, five year old HP laptop is now surfing faster. I have reset my cache, tried other connections, done the Open DNS thing, and it is still very slow. I am not overly tech savy, but I can follow directions well.
Does anyone have advice, or at least, a place to begin to address this problem.

How are you connecting to the Internet - is it a DSL or ADSL modem > AirPort Base Station or is there no base station?
I will assume the former. Try these maintenance tasks:
    ESSENTIAL MAINTENANCE
    1. Repair Permissions - /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. Start Disk Utility, select your HD and click on Repair Permissions. When finished, quit Disk Utility and then restart your computer.
    2. Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
    3. Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen. When logged-in, then go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort
    - click on the 'Network Name:' roll-button, select 'Join Other Network...', enter 'Network Name and select the security type you are using, and finally, enter your Password and click 'Join'.
    If ISP uses DHCP:
    - click on 'Advanced', TCP/IP and confirm that 'Configure IPv4:' is set to 'Using DHCP', click 'OK'.
    - click the 'Apply' button and exit System Preferences.
    REBOOT AIRPORT HARDWARE
    1. Turn power off to ISP modem and AirPort Base Station, and shutdown computer - leave power off for 10 minutes.
    2. Turn on modem and wait for it to complete its test cycle. Then turn on the AirPort Base Station.
    3. Turn on computer and check if AirPort Base Station appears in AirPort Utility.
    4. If AirPort Base Station is not seen in AirPort Utility, quit AirPort Utility and turn AirPort Off by clicking the AirPort icon at the right-hand corner of the menu bar. Wait 30 seconds and turn the AirPort On again.
    5. Check if AirPort Base Station appears in AirPort Utility.

You need more RAM. I know the specs for Mavericks say 2GB. Mavericks will run with 2, but it won't run well. Especially if you are running virtualization software.
Otherwise not much is suspicious on your report.
you could try a safe boot (restart, hold down shift until you see the Apple logo). This does some diagnostic testing and then starts up without third-party added on software. If your Mac runs faster, then you know the problem is with the third-party software. A safe boot doesn't fix anything, but it tells you where the problem is. Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
if the safe boot does run faster, then I'd suspect

  • Slow/unresponsive MacBook Pro (10.7.5)

    Hey Apple,
A few weeks ago, my MacBook Pro suddenly started acting up. From one day to another it became slow, freezing frequently at the most simple tasks. The "beach-ball of death" would show, sometimes persisting for a few minutes, until the system would finally recover itself. In the meanwhile, the cursor could be moved, although often, nothing could actually be clicked.
After a full re-install of Lion, the problem persisted. Im not a computer-expert, but i think i tried quite a few "good" things, such as; checking for processes that take up CPU, veryfing disk permissions through disk utility, resetting PRAM, starting in safe mode... yet nothing seems to help.
Do you have any idea what the problem could be/how i could fix it? I always loved working on my Mac, but right now it's a real frustration, as it takes ages to get anything done.
    Thanks!
    Sebastiaan

  • How to fix my slow, freezing Macbook Pro (2012 version)?

Hi! I bought my macbook pro in Jan 2013, it is the Mid 2012 version. Since yesterday, it is running super slow, and freezes constantly. I've deleted a lot of files from my computer and transferred them to a usb to clear out some place on the disk. Still, the mac is lagging and color wheel shows up for nearly anything I do on the computer.

Boot into your Mountain Lion Recovery partition (hold down the command and R keys whilst booting) and use Disk Utility to both repair permissions (there will be some that cannot be repaired - you can safely ignore these) and then verify your hard drive. Repair if necessary.
The type of slowness that you write about can sometimes - sometimes - be caused by a failing hard drive. Let's just hope you pass the verify test.

    Clinton

  • Mavericks extremely slow on MacBook Pro Mid-2010

    Hi all,
Since i installed Mavericks its been impossible to work on my Mac. I've already done a clean install and no signs of improve.
I use Eclipse IDE to work, and its extremly slow now. Even can have some video playing on Youtube without some cuts when working.
What should i do? Downgrade to ML? Sell this laptop? Buy new RAM?
I've attached below the EtreCheck.... i don't know if theres something on my OS that may be causing this.
PS: ....and the OS already indexed all the files.
Big thanks for any help given.

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Photoshop CS5 very slow performance, MacBook Pro i7

Hi, I've noticed some posts on slow screen redraw, but my issue seems to be with specific performance with web based files having many layers and layer groups.
A sample file is a 27mb psd. It has lot of layers (525), mostly type layers (limited to 3-4 typefaces in the file) and layer groups. If I select a particularly large layer group and try to move it on the canvas, I get the Adobe throbber cursor icon for at least 20 seconds. Even small layer groups bring up the throbber cursor for a few seconds. Overall, things seem much slower than CS4. Not good! And I'm just speaking of basic operations, not hitting intensive tools or major filters yet.
I've looked at the site below, but not much information except the option to purchase some scripts to 'warm-up' Photoshop. After what I spent on Design Premium, I don't think I should have to purchase third party scripts to warm it up. (I did experiment with the tiles option under performance pref's, but upping that made opening files take 2 minutes, where before opening was achieved in 10-15 seconds.

I have a brand new MacBook Pro i7, 8GB, 7200 internal drive. I installed everything from a fresh install of Snow Leopard. CS4 has never been installed on this Mac.
    Any thoughts?

if you have 4GB RAM, the system would need about 1-2GB,
so if you quit all other apps and only run PS, it has 2-3GB RAM left.
you can set RAM-usage in percentage, in the settings menu of photoshop,
i set it to 70%, the rest is for osx.
so lets say PS uses 2GB RAM in your case, the more hires images you open at once and the more layers they have,
and the bigger they are, the 2GB RAM are gone and PS will use the scratch disc for the mentioned images you opened at once, which is also configured in the settings menu. usage of a scratch disc (PS writes data to the scratch disc permanently) will slow down overall performance, it may lagg and everything is slower than before (in my experience). best for scratch disc usage is a separate, fast, internal disc, as huge as possible (50-250GB discsize and empty, no files on it, so that PS can write continously, in order to avoid disc-fragmentation, which would slow down the writing process additionally)
thats the reason i would add 8GB RAM.
RAM is very important for photoshop CS5.
(also processor clock speed and number of cores - in the moment 2 cores are enough
as CS5 isnt optimized yet for more than 4 or 6 cores. more to come soon, i hope...
in my case, i added 24GB RAM, cause i want to avoid usage of a scratch disc at all. this is a huge gain of performance for myself.
i never liked my old scratch disc, as working was terrible slow with it. i also had only 4GB RAM in my last mac, and working was no fun
i work on large format files, 50-100cm at 300dpi and lots of layers, each layer has to be seen like an image itself, so each layer rises RAM consumption.
its a pitty that i never saw adobe delivering some kind of performance guide for photoshop, how to improve performance for professional users, like posting that guide on their main photoshop site, i had to digg for these informations for a long period of time and found it in the end at diglloyd´s comprehensive site. i wonder why adobe makes a secret about photoshop performance, a lot of my friends at work mentioned formerly, that they have had huge lag issues and dont know where to begin solving these problems, which are solvable for sure.... (new hardware, proper settings and so on)
you can read detailed instructions, on how to speed up things in PS here: (where i took it for myself)

  • Very slow older macbook pro

Okay, so part of the answer is in the subject - this is an older machine. A late 2008 MBP 15" 8 GB of ram. It's a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. (MacBookPro5,1)
I'm running 10.9.5. I wish I hadn't upgraded to 10.9 - it's seemed much slower since, but I understand that downgrading is not advisable, and even before the upgrade it was sluggish.
I don't expect this machine to be lightning quick, but it lags at seemingly random times. It takes applications a long time to launch (I timed MacJournal at 21 seconds). Mail.app seems to be particularly slow.
The thing that got me to post was that I received a "new" computer at the university office where I work. It's an iMac, 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, like mine but with only 4 GB of ram, running 10.9, like mine. It FLIES compared to mine. I realize there are differences between an iMac and a MBP that probably make the iMac a faster machine overall, but the difference between the two is like night and day. So I'm wondering what steps I should take to troubleshoot my MBP?
I have a 500 GB hard drive with 200 GB free space.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Nathan

  • Multiple kernel panics & black screen on Macbook Pro Retina early 2013

My Macbook Pro Retina (early 2013, 8GB ram, 250 GB hard drive) has been experiencing multiple kernel panics forcing rapid-fire restarts of the computer multiple times within a very short time frame. This is followed by the screen staying black even if the computer is on (keyboard lit up, can hear volume buttons) but nothing is on the screen. Once the screen goes black, I have to employ some combination of manually shutting it down (by holding down the power button) and then turning it back on (+/- doing an SMC reset) to get the screen working again. I also tried a PRAM reset once, but it didn't seem to have any effect, and I've repaired the disk permissions.
This issue has happened multiple times in the past week. It seems to vary as to how long it takes to happen again (could be a few days, could be less than an hour), and it has happened during multiple different activities (surfing the web, using Word, using Mail). I have experienced this both on Mavericks and after updating to Yosemite over the weekend.
I took it to the Apple Store on Saturday and while the Genius saw that the screen was black when I initially brought it in (even though the computer was on), we couldn't recreate the issue and the diagnostic tests he ran showed nothing. It even started back up fine for him. I thought I was OK, until I had another round of kernel panics + black screen this afternoon. At this point, doing a normal restart of the machine results in a kernel panic before it even makes it off of the loading screen and then a black screen.
This time, I checked the logs and saw the panic report included below. I don't know enough about this to understand what it means, but hopefully someone else does! Some internet searching has suggested that it might be a problem with the GPU (and the log below says GPU panic). Help, please!
