Kernel_task on CPU, MacPro

Plenty of threads on the kernel_task issue, even here. But most of them are on MacBooks, and seem to think it is heat related. I see this issue twice a month or so, on a MacPro.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below is a partial list of causes for this condition.
Thermal overload
This can be due to accumulation of dust, high ambient temperature, or to the malfunction of a cooling fan or temperature sensor. The kernel tries to compensate by throttling back the CPU's. You might see messages like the following in the Console window:
SMC::smcHandleInterruptEvent WARNING status=0x0 (0x40 not set) notif=0x0
The timestamps of those messages (if any) indicate the times, since the log was last cleared, when a processor was being throttled because of high temperature.
Note that if the problem is caused by a faulty sensor that reads too high, there may be no actual overheating.
The Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or temperature sensor.
Using Apple Hardware Test
Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume puts an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selectingAbout This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility bycompletely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode (with the shift key held down at the startup chime.) Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
In some cases the issue has reportedly been resolved by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.

    Hi Everyone,
    Came here to ask for help given my bad situation with MBA 13 Mid-2013 (Mavericks 10.9.2). Yesterday I`ve opened my MBA and it was very laggy and sluggish, and I could hear the fan going crazy on speed. After opening Activity Monitor, Kernel_Task was consuming 300% of CPU in average... I suspect that may be related to recently installed CleanMyMac2, after performing a series of cleaning tasks to save space on my MBA (couldn`t say I wasn`t  afraid of doing it). But this situation came a week after the cleaning above, so it`s kind of confusing. Last app I've downloaded was OneNote from AppStore. Two days later the problem started out.
    I`ve checked in a lot of discussions on this kernel situation, but none was like mine. The majority had relation with the Mac being on battery; after plugged in everything worked. In my case it happens both ways, on A/C and on battery. Tried the resets but no success at all. Also tried to boot in safe mode, but somehow didn`t work for me in Mavericks.
    I`m desperate to find a solution but it`s kinda hard to find it. That`s why I`m asking for your help! Thanks a lot!!!

  • Kernel_task high cpu usage when using external monitor at 1080p

    My external display is a Samsung PX2370 connected to my MBP using an HDMI cable with a HDMI-to-miniDP adapter
    I first noticed this after the last EFI update several months back. At first I thought kernel_task eats up too much cpu cycles whenever an external display is attached, but it turns out this only happens when the external display is set to 1080p. When external display is set to 720p, kernel_task is pretty much normal (~5% cpu usage) but rises up to ~150% cpu usage once the external display is set to 1080p.
    kernel_task cpu usage is also with normal range when my MBP is connected to a Samsung LCD TV at 720p.
    Anyone having the same problem or know of any fix/workarounds?

    The battery was dead so I bought a new one and replaced it. I also installed a new Samsung SSD.
    Then after the startup (OSX Mavericks was installed) I had a high CPU usage on the kernel_task process.
    After some research i managed to get rid of the problem with manipulating the IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext files.
    After that everything worked fine.
    Now I decided to upgrade to Yosemite (clean install from usb) and now i have the same problem again, but i can't find the IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext.
    After I power up the macbook everything works fine, but after some minutes the kernel_task has again a very high CPU usage - the mouse is hardly moving.
    How can I solve this problem and where do I find the IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext? Is there another solution for this problem?
    I already reset the SMC and the NVRAM.

  • Kernel_task high cpu usage, high fan speed, and low cpu tempterature

    Hi,
    I've noticed that a lot of people have been having trouble with the kernel_task process, but I couldn't quite find a situation similar to mine (most seem temperature related).
    Here is the situation (15' MBP, mid-2010):
    - on boot (while the apple logo is shown), the fans speed suddenly jumps, and stays there, even if the computer has been off for a while.
    - boot takes a little over a minute, which is considerably slower than what I was used to before today
    - when finally started-up, the activity monitors shows kernel_task using between 160-180% of the CPU!
    - temperatures are shown to be around 30C, except for the mem controller at 40C (still very low temp), but the fan speed is arround 6000rpm for both fans.
    - this happened out of nowhere, as I woke the mpb from sleep this morning.
    Since then I've tried:
    - multiple reboots
    - install all updates
    - uninstall flash player (some people where having trouble with that)
    - empty the system cache with Onyx (reported as a cause of slow boot)
    - reset PRAM
    - reset SMC
    - put some ice packs under the mpb to cool things even further!
    And so far, nothing has worked! I've had this laptop for 1 year, and nothing had ever failed. I upgraded to lion a few weeks ago, and everything had been working fine since the upgrade. This really happened out of nowhere, and none of the many forums I have read could offer a solution, and cals to apple support do not seem to yield better results (though I scheduled a call with them at 9am this morning, we'll see).
    Has anyone had a similar set of problems?

    I have the same issue (2.66 2010 MBP Hi-Res Anti Glare.)
    I took it to Apple Store Covent Garden, JUST within warranty.
    18 days later my machine has a new Main Logic borad, heat sensors, top case, palm rest. etc.
    I turned it on.
    The fans kicked in. All processors at 50%, big ole kernal task.
    I took it back, geniuses rest SMC and tested it under load and it was fine.
    weirdly it failed diagnostics at first but then seemed fine
    I came home. Fans kicked in...
    I took it back. Diagnostics failed heat sensors again
    Replaced logic board and heats sensors again, but more carefully this time just in case, tested again.
    I took it home. FANS FANS FANS.
    Last time I was in the store I was told my machine was fine and had been thoroughly tested.
    In mac store, no fans.
    I erased hard drive and clean installed Lion
    FANS
    I replaced hard drive with OCZ SSD, clean LION.
    Fans
    Software update
    SMC
    PRAM
    permissions
    Onyx complete clean/maintenace
    FANS/CPU
    switched back to Snow Leopard SSD
    PRAM SMC ONYX etc.
    FANS/CPU
    replaced RAM, memtest-ed. fine, FANS
    gonna try again but up to nearly 2 months of all my spare time trying to shut this thing up so I can sell it.

  • Help Kernel_task eating CPU and MBP running hot since 10.6.3

    Hi Guys,
    Need some real help here. My laptop has become almost unusable here because the CPU goes up to 100% and the culprit is kernel_task.
    Ive noticed it slightly after installing 10.6.3. CPU runs up to 108c degrees Celsius.
    Ive tried reseting PRAM
    Ive tried reinstalling OS with a time machine backup
    Getting very annoyed. Is there anything I can try?

    I tried a reset SMC and a reboot afterwards. However that did not resolve the problem.
    Havent really been hearing the fans lately. CPU is 79C celcius.
    As i said in my post previously, it is the kernel_task process that is using up the majority of the CPU.

  • Kernel_task high CPU - faulty thunderbolt port?

    Have been experiencing problems with my MacBookPro8,2 (Late 2011) running 10.8.2 and connected to a Thunderbolt display when the kernel_task hogs 70% of CPU capability. A Promise RAID is also connected to the display, but don't think is related.
    This is what I've found so far:
    * As soon as I disconnect the Thunderbolt display, CPU system usage goes down to < 3%
    * Connected Promise RAID to the MBP, and no CPU usage changes
    * Reconnected the display and umm... wouldn't detect it... had to restart couple of times before getting it to work again...
    Since I bought them (MBP + display) I've been having problems, but I have not being able to nail them down:
    * The Display's speakers often fail
    * The Ethernet connection often fail to detect
    * The USB ports often fail
    * The bloody display wouldn't get detected some times
    Don't think the problem is with the Display as I've connected my Mac Book Air to it, and have not had any problem.
    I guess I'll have no choice but to take the MBP to the shop, but I was wondering if somebody has some ideas.

This happens to me BOTH at work with a ThunderBolt connected LED Cinema display (the model before the Thunderbolt Display), AND at home on an older 23" Apple Cinema Display connected, by adaptor, to the Thunderbolt port.
    My MacBook Pro is actually an 8,3 (2.3GHz i7) running 10.8.3.
    After reading your post I unplugged the display from the Thunderbolt port (leaving the displays USB connection plugged in) and presto!... CPU usage on process 0 (kernel_task) went from 609% to basically nothing.
    APPLE FIX THIS!!!!!!! Sheesh..........

  • Kernel_task high CPU

    Hi,
    I've recently started having issues with OS X Yosemite the Kernel_Task runs constantly at +400% CPU this makes the Mac totally unusable. I read on various google searches about removing a file in the system library based on the version of MacBook Pro. I did this and it made no difference.
    1 search advised that a total re-install of the OS is needed to resolve this issue. I tried a repair install from the recovery partition but it error's out and now won't boot into OS X without trying to install. I'm guessing my only option now is to wipe OS X and start fresh, which is not an issue my only issue with this is I have a BootCamp partition which i do not want to lose. If i wipe just the OS X partition and install Yosemite on there will my BootCamp partition still work?
    Or does anyone else know how to fix ridiculously high Kernel_task CPU usage?

    When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
    ☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
    ☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component

    User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
    Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
    Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • Kernel_task eating CPU with MotorolaSM56 modem

    Dear Apple Discussions,
    I recently got a fifth generation (1.67GHz) 15'' Aluminum PowerBook.
    Whenever I connect to the internet via dial-up my kernel_task goes up to 30%CPU usage (just connected, not doing anything). This does not occur if I connect to the internet via ethernet (AirPort has not been tested thus far).
    This does not occur with my first generation (1.25GHZ) 15'' Aluminum PowerBook (just has been downgraded to 10.3.9).
    When comparing the two laptop's I noticed that the "older" model has a InternalUSBModem.kext (v2.6.3) driver for the modem, while my newer PB has a MotorolaSM56K.kext (v1.3.3) driver.
    The kicker comes with my first generation (1.8GHz) iMac G5. It also has a MotorolaSM56K.kext (v1.3.1) driver for the modem and it too has a kernel task which eats up 40% of the CPU when connected to the internet (just connected, not doing anything).
    I have read on the news groups about the kernel task - but to no real avail.
    I have turned off IPv6 to no effect.
    Any suggestions?

  • Python, kernel_task hogging CPU

    Recently, I've noticed Cee Pee You has reported 100% processor usage which doesn't decrease until I log out. When this happens Activity Monitor shows that both python and kernel_task each occupy over 45% CPU activity, leaving little for anything else.
    Usually, I have Safari, Mail, Acquisition, and Activity Monitor open. Quitting any or all of them doesn't decrease the CPU load so I can't tell which one has caused Python to go wild. I have all the latest updates for Tiger including QT.
    Can anyone guess what's happening? Is there anything else I can do to determine what program is misbehaving?

  • Kernel_Task pinning CPU

    So I have been trying to find a scalable solution to this issue for some time now.  Loads of complaints about it with various reported fixes with ACPI extension loading, switching in and out of energy saving settings...but none of these work for me.
    I am running a 3.5 GHz 6 core Xeon E5 with 16 GB Ram Mac Pro.  We bought this to use as our dedicated build server.  Its running Xcode, some Java based tools we used to generate the c code from XML and thats about it.
    If I use Xcode more than a few times the kernel_task spikes and turns this Ferrari into a Scooter with two fat people riding on it.  Anyone else have the same issue or know of a real solution to this problem?  This machine is brand new, no hardware failures, re-installed the OS 4 times... there is no reason for this crappy kernel_task behaviour.

  • Kernel_task eats CPU when MIDI system wakes up

    I have a MacBook Pro and a Focusrite Saffire (connected via firewire).
    Noticed that the latest 10.5's are eating a ton of cpu when running Logic (or Ableton Live, my other DAW).
    Digging around, using Activity Monitor I see:
    when I plug in my Saffire, kernel_task jumps from 2% cpu to about 7%.
    when I start Logic/Live, it jumps to 45-50% cpu and stays there (regardless of whether or not sound is being input or output).
    Digging a little deeper, with no DAW running, I fire up Audio/MIDI Setup and switch the default output to the Saffire... kernel_task steady at 7%. Click on the MIDI Devices tab and kernel_task jumps up into the forties. Unplugging the Saffire, the cpu load goes down. Replugging, it does not go back up until I click "Rescan MIDI".
    I have no MIDI devices connected to the Saffire (nor do I have any midi cables with which to try that experiment).
    Using dtrace, I could probably dig more but I'm not on Apple's payroll and I'm too old to hack for free. I'd rather make music.
    Fingers crossed that this can be fixed cause half a core is better used in a soft synth or something.
