Kernel_task taking up to 800% CPU Usage
My macbook has become extremely slow lately that it's almost impossible to get work done. I've observed the Activity Monitor and realized the "kernel_task" process has been eating up most of the the CPU usage with usually 200%-300% but can reach as high as more than 800%. I've looked the problem up on the internet and found that others have solved this problem by deleting a certain .plist file. However, that solution doesn't seem to apply to me as my mac's model identifier is MacBookPro9,2 and thus doesn't have the corresponding file that needs to be deleted.
I've been going all over the internet and even a mac store trying to look for a solution but it seems I've hit a roadblock. I've become desperate for help that I've chosen to post here for the first time hoping to get your help and advice. Thank you for your time and patience.
Here are some details that might shed some light on the issue:

800% CPU Usage used by Mail App?
Hi,
since i've upgraded to Lion my Mail App goes hurry up to 800% CPU Usage and more. My 2011 MacBook Pro goes very loud and hot. So after a few tips i've reinstalled complety the Lion (with a self made Lion CD) and reconfigured Mail (without any backup import). But nothing happens. I cannot leave Mail open a few minutes because it starts normally but then goes up to 100%, 200%,... new record yesterday was 800% of CPU Usage.
I have about 10 Mail IMAP Accounts with round about 6000 Mails. A friend as more than this and doesn't have such problems on his new iMac.
I'm very frustrated and don't know what should i do... at this point i cannot use the mail app.
Hope you could help me please!
Best,
HennyI fixed this issue, albeit, not in an elegant manner. In my frustration with the new mail, I tried to copy the binaries and dylibs (otool -L) for the snow leopard version of mail to my lion install. It eventually worked after finding all the correct dylibs. However, it crashed frequently, and I had to revert back to lion's mail. When lion's mail was re-opened, it re-imported all my mail and the issue disappeared.
I know this isn't a solution isn't pretty. If you try this, be sure to make backups of everything.
Good Luck.

Kernel_task taking up too much CPU after Mavericks update.
Hello!
I am running a Mac Book Pro 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7. 8gb 1067MHz DDR3. OS X 10.9.1
Having just installed Mavericks, I've had a bunch of problems. One of them has been a new thing called kernel_task which can take up most my CPU from time to time.
I read a previous discussion and it seemed that some audio software had been the issue for a few people. However I do not recall installing or uninstalling any audio software. @linc_davis kindly offered up a diagnostics check, am hoping he or some other kind soul can make sense of the following terminal dumps please so I can find out which app is bringing me down!
Looking at the below, I certainly havent used or wanted the BB Rim software for a long time. Will try and download that and uninstall it again. Little snitch I know and use. and same with the mouse driver Evoluent, backblaze, peer guardian, macKeeper, and google. The others I don't recognise.
Thank you very much!

SkypeABSMS.bundleStart by following these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper (v 2.8). Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
Then, uninstall Trusteer Rapport. Your Mac cannot operate properly with it installed.
The fastest way to take an exquisitely designed and painstakingly engineered Mac and make it run like a steaming pile of dung is to install and use "cleaning" or "security" products like MacKeeper. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk. -

The SQL statement is forcing the use of a specific index, is this the best index?:
SELECT /*+ INDEX (OM_COURSE_FEE OCF_CFC_CODE) */DISTINCT CF_COURSE_CODE FROM OM_COURSE_FEE,OT_STUDENT_FEE_COL_HEAD,OT_STUDENT_FEE_COL_DETL WHERE SFCH_SYS_ID = SFCD_SFCH_SYS_ID AND

NVL(STUD_REG_STATUS,0) != 23 AND STUD_COURSE_CODE != 'CCT' AND CF_COURSE_CODE= STUD_COURSE_CODE ) ORDER BY 1 DESC
Unfortunately, explain plans, even with dbms_xplan.display, may not show the actual execution plan - this is more of a problem when the SQL statement includes bind variables (capturing a 10046 trace at level 8 or 12 will help). With the information provided, it looks like the problem is with the number of logical reads performed: 17,503,305 in 84 executions = 208,373 logical reads per execution. Something is causing the SQL statement to execute inefficiently, possibly a join problem between tables, possibly the forced use of an index.

There is the possibility of additional predicates being generated by Oracle which will make this possible without introducing a Cartesian join, but those predicates are not displayed with an explain plan (they will appear with a DBMS_XPLAN). I may not be remembering correctly, but if the optimizer goal is set to first rows, a Cartesian join might appear in a plan as a nested loops join - Jonathan will know for certain if that is the case.
Have you investigated the above as a possible cause? If you know that there is a problem with this one SQL statement, a 10046 trace at level 8 or 12 is much more helpful than a Statspack report.

Photos App taking too much CPU usage
Hi everyone,
This morning I just installed Yosemite 10.10.3 and started to new Photos App.
Now, there is a processus taking almost 100% of CPU usage which I can't definitely kill : it always come back, even after I totally rebooted my MacBook Air. The Photos App is not running, but the process is.
See my the screenshot below.
The fan is spinning at more that 6000 rpm.
Anyone else having this issue?Photos on my iMac uses 150% or more of the processor whenever it is open...even when I'm not doing anything in the app. Once I close the app the processor returns to normal usage. I just converted my Aperture library so perhaps it is doing background housekeeping? I don't know, but this doesn't look right.

CPU Usage of Xcode while editing
Hi,
I have a early 2011 Macbook Pro 13, and i am a college student and use my mac for my college needs and also for some development work. I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, and i found everything to be fine, until today i found out in Activity Monitor that, when i just opened a C++ file to edit it,not even an Xcode Project, just the file, Xcode was taking a very high CPU usage and it started warming the under side of the notebook as well after a few hours. This would not be the case when i had Lion. I am not sure if this issue is specific to Xcode 4.4 or something else.
Please help me get a solution for this..i do coding on the go as well and this eats battery a lot more as well.
ThanksAs mentioned in my post, i did not open an Xcode project to edit the code. i merely opened the folder containing my code in finder, double clicked the C++ file, which opened it in the Xcode editor. In this mode Xcode only gives me code completion and syntax help, but does not show live issues like errors or warnings, so i do not think that your suggestion will help.
In any case i tried your suggestion and it didnt seem to help -
Macbook Air running extremely slow - kernel_task at 300% cpu usage
I purchased my Macbook Air roughly 15 months ago and it's performance has constantly been impressive since I purchased it - until roughly a fortnight ago. I came home from work one afternoon and it was running at a snails pace. I had recently upgraded to Yosemite though I'm unsure if this had anything to do with it. I had also recently installed FitBit software to sync to my new FitBit flex.
It has continued to run in this manner constantly since the problem began. It is ridiculously slow, every single request takes a very long time to respond. Logging in takes forever. When I click on an app to open it, the icon bounces for 30 seconds or more, and it's not a smooth bounce either, it's quite a jagged bounce!
I'm hoping someone is able to provide some advice, guidance or help. The laptop is no longer covered by the 12 month Manufacturer Warranty, and I did not purchase an Apple Care plan as no Apple product I've owned before has experienced issues like this.
This whole experience is killing me! I'm suspecting hardware failure and I'm just so sad that this could happen to the laptop I've loved so much since I bought it!
The problem:
The kernel_task process is constantly running at 300% or higher cpu usage, with Activity Monitor indicating the processor is being maxed out by a system task. Also, the laptop's fan is constantly running at full capacity - from the moment the laptop turns on, or wakes up.
What I think the problem might be:
As a result of many, many Google searches, it appears that this behaviour may be due to the Macbook Air thinking it is overheating - and I will clarify here that it certainly is not. It is cool to touch, always, when this problem occurs. (yet the fan is almost taking off!). As a result of the MacBook Air thinking it's overheating, it not only is running the fan at a very high RPM (confirmed with iStat), but it also is intentionally choking the system with 'simple requests' in attempt to cool the computer down. Apparently this is a built-in feature of OS X. The kernel has priority over user tasks, causing all user tasks to be granted a lower priority, causing the computer to run INCREDIBLY SLOW. Even as I'm typing this, I'm about two sentences ahead of what is showing on the screen!
Steps I have taken:
- Read widely across the internet with every possible relevant search term I can think of
- Downloaded iStat to see if any of the temperatures are too high (they all seemed fine..)
- Disabled Bluetooth and Wifi. (no change)
- Reset SMC (multiple times.., no change)
- Reset PRAM (multiple times.., no change)
- Drained the battery completely (2 or 3 times, no change)
- Install Windows 7 on BootCamp in attempt to bypass the issue (CPU usage was 100% constantly in Windows also)
- Uninstalled FitBit software (no change..)
- Uninstalled other software I did not need (no change..)
- Attempt to boot into Safe Mode / Recovery Mode (even in this modes, the same thing is happening)
- Repaired Disk Permissions
- Backed up all personal data
- Used the built-in Internet Recovery mode to format my Macintosh HD and re-install a fresh copy of OS X (Mountain Lion). (no change…)
- Re-upgrade to Yosemite (no change..)
I've downloaded EtreCheck and here is the output:
Problem description:
OS X is running incredibly slow. kernel_task process is constantly using 300% and upward CPU usage.

Dec 20, 2014, 02:15:38 PM Self test - passedHi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.
I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.
I went in and they ran a thorough diagnostic check on my Macbook Air and determined that the sensors were indeed faulty - several were providing no information "No reading" instead of providing a temperature. Thus, the Air was unaware of the temperature across multiple components.
Despite the laptop being outside the 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty, the Apple Store determined that it was covered under warranty through Australian Consumer Law - the laptop is now in for a complete repair under warranty at no cost to myself.
I couldn't be happier. -
MacBook Air 11" Mid 2011 (Fan & CPU Usage & Kernel_task)
Hello everyone.
I have a small problem with my Mac which is about its fan noise and CPU usage.
It was running FLAWLESSLY until like last couple of days after OS update where I started to notice really high CPU and Fan usage.
But first, system specification:
1.6 Ghz Intel Core i5 Processor
4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Memory
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB Graphics Card
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
128GB SSD Storage
For some reason my MacBook Air started to have these "high intensity work" moments when a process called "Kernel_task" started to eat up to 600% of the CPU !
Now I can imagine it's just a software issue since it started to occur after I updated my OS via Software Application and my Flash Player and the rest of my software is up-to-date too but has any of you had this problem before ?
I do not play on my MacBook Air, there are only two things I do - I use Safari and some Adobe software (Photoshop/Flash/Dreamweaver/Illustrator/InDesign/Fireworks) and that's all.The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below is a partial list of causes for this condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce heat dissipation. This condition can be due to an accumulation of dust, to high ambient temperature, or to the malfunction of a cooling fan or temperature sensor. Note that if the problem is caused by a faulty sensor that reads too high, there may be no actual overheating.
The Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or temperature sensor.
Using Apple Hardware Test
Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume may put an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode (with the shift key held down at the startup chime.) Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
In some cases the condition has reportedly been cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC. I can't confirm. -

My external display is a Samsung PX2370 connected to my MBP using an HDMI cable with a HDMI-to-miniDP adapter
I first noticed this after the last EFI update several months back. At first I thought kernel_task eats up too much cpu cycles whenever an external display is attached, but it turns out this only happens when the external display is set to 1080p. When external display is set to 720p, kernel_task is pretty much normal (~5% cpu usage) but rises up to ~150% cpu usage once the external display is set to 1080p.
kernel_task cpu usage is also with normal range when my MBP is connected to a Samsung LCD TV at 720p.
Anyone having the same problem or know of any fix/workarounds?Seems like the problem persists when playing a 720p video on the external display set to 720p. To sum it up

Oracle taking 100% CPU usage
Hi,
I have a situation. I am trying to execute a big query by involving 3 tables (joins). The query is taking about 20 minutes time to execute. While the query is executing the CPU usage for ORACLE is 100%. Please put somelight on this as of to why this is happening? Do I need to tweak my query a bit more. This is happening only recently as there are more number of records. ORACLE is installed on a Unix machine
Thanks in advance. The First Rule Of Performance Troubleshooting: IDENTIFY THE PERFORMANCE PROBLEM.
All you have done thus far is identifying a symptom. High CPU utilisation. This in itself is totally meaningless - nothing can be inferred from this symptom without additional troubleshooting.
This means determining WHAT is happening when that query/process runs. What is it doing? (look at wait states and event state summaries of the process)
WHY is it doing that? Look at the execution plan.
With performance tuning, one needs to deal with facts. So you need to pop the hood and get your hands dirty so see what is actually happening under the hood. -
Kernel_task high CPU usage yosemite
Hi,
I have a problem with my old macbook pro 15" Early 2011
The battery was dead so I bought a new one and replaced it. I also installed a new Samsung SSD.
Then after the startup (OSX Mavericks was installed) I had a high CPU usage on the kernel_task process.
After some research i managed to get rid of the problem with manipulating the IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext files.
After that everything worked fine.
Now I decided to upgrade to Yosemite (clean install from usb) and now i have the same problem again, but i can't find the IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext.
After I power up the macbook everything works fine, but after some minutes the kernel_task has again a very high CPU usage - the mouse is hardly moving.
How can I solve this problem and where do I find the IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext? Is there another solution for this problem?
I already reset the SMC and the NVRAM.
thank you

Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan or sensor
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or sensor.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models may cause this issue. If applicable, test by disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display. -
Process: "kernel_task" taking up almost 100% of CPU
A few hours ago, I noticed my MBP start hanging and generally processing very slow. Apps would freeze at random times, and generally a lot of odd behavior.
I checked the activity monitor to see what might be causing this. It turns out, the process "kernel_task" is using almost 100% of my CPU. It has stayed within the 70-100% range, and has yet to go down. I tried many things, including restarting my Mac many times, but it remains the same.
Does anyone know why "kernel_task" is taking up so much of my CPU? Is there a way to somehow "reset" the process to get it back to normal? Any help would be much appreciated, since my Mac is, for just about all purposes, useless right now. It took me about an hour just to get to this page and type this message.
Thanks in advance!
P.S. I attached a screenshot of the process in the Activity Monitor. You can view it here: http://images12.fotki.com/v203/filejMEm/9ae47/8/1659168/8691947/kernel_task.pngI just want to add that I think the "kernel_task" might have started eating CPU when I stopped a RAR program in the middle of extracting an archive. I'm not 100% sure though that this is when the problem started.

High Kernel_task CPU usage when charging
Hey,
When I put my adapter in my macbook to charge i have a high cpu usage(500-650%).
When I switch back to the battery then after 10sec - 30sec my kernel_task go back to normal 2%cpu usage.
And then when I had 1 high CPU usage my Fans of my macbook won't turn off even if i have 2% cpu usage.
I have a early 2011 macbook pro 15" with standard Lion installed AMD Radeon 6490M version.
I tried the 2 resets and that didnt worked tried to reinstall worked for 1 week and then it came back.
I hope somebody can help me.Changing the mother board is the best way to go for the simple reason that the Mac laptops are a very integrated system. Swapping out components on the motherboard would take very skilled people and they get paid large amounts of money. Apple technicians cannot do the job. Swapping out the MB is the most cost effective way.
For Apple, that motherboard is very inexpensive. The labor to swap it as a complete unit is by far the cheapest way for Apple rather than diagnosing and swapping out individual components. If you have ever done any surface mount component replacement this would not be hard to see. -
Kernel_Task High CPU Usage (300%) and Fan Speed - On Battery and Plugged In
Hi Everyone,
Came here to ask for help given my bad situation with MBA 13 Mid-2013 (Mavericks 10.9.2). Yesterday I`ve opened my MBA and it was very laggy and sluggish, and I could hear the fan going crazy on speed. After opening Activity Monitor, Kernel_Task was consuming 300% of CPU in average... I suspect that may be related to recently installed CleanMyMac2, after performing a series of cleaning tasks to save space on my MBA (couldn`t say I wasn`t afraid of doing it). But this situation came a week after the cleaning above, so it`s kind of confusing. Last app I've downloaded was OneNote from AppStore. Two days later the problem started out.
I`ve checked in a lot of discussions on this kernel situation, but none was like mine. The majority had relation with the Mac being on battery; after plugged in everything worked. In my case it happens both ways, on A/C and on battery. Tried the resets but no success at all. Also tried to boot in safe mode, but somehow didn`t work for me in Mavericks.
I`m desperate to find a solution but it`s kinda hard to find it. That`s why I`m asking for your help! Thanks a lot!!!
Here`s a system report to help!
