Kernel_task uses over 250% CPU after water spillage

--MacBook Pro 13'' 2.3 GHz i5, 4GB RAM, Version 10.9.4, Early 2011 Model --
Hello,
So after a few droplets of water fell on the keyboard the computer has gone wild. Activity monitor shows kernel_task using over 250% with 80 threads, and obviously the computer is totally slowed and unresponsive. The fan is on non-stop. Multiple reboots and 3 days with it totally off has done nothing. However, in safe boot the computer runs normally, and kernel_task is around 2-3% with 77 threads. Any ideas here?
Thanks,

  • ReportCrash using over 100% cpu after opening photoshop cs6

Currently running Mavericks on my macbook pro & just started noticing a problem. I'm sure its been there for a while, judging by past performance of photoshop, but just now caught it in activity monitor.
After I launch photoshop CS6, AM automatically shows ReportCrash as using upwards of 100% cpu, which explains why my computer seems to be dying when i'm working in the program.
As far as I could get with this problem on my own is checking concole to see what might be causing the process to appear. Not sure how to fix the problem though, which is why I come to the forums seeking guidance!
thanks in advance for any help!

Same thing is happening to me. Seems like it started about a week ago, fan is running a whole lot now. I'm not saying it's the cause but the "top" utility shows /System/Library/CoreServices/ReportCrash running at 103% - 105%. Weird.
Changes: In the past 10 days Software Update delivered new versions of OS X 10.9.2 and iTunes 11.1.5, and I installed and ran DiskAid 6.5.3 and evasi0n7-mac-1.0.7. Also, Chrome began to hang several times a day in the past week so I removed it and re-installed it, which seems to have solved that problem.
Anybody else hearing the fan a lot and seeing these 100%+ utilitizations lately?

  • Premiere Pro using over 100% CPU

When I open up Premiere Pro, it is using about 6.5% CPU. I can cut, move around in the timeline and add effects ok. But when I play the video (even if its just one track with no effects) my computer starts running very hot and Premiere starts using over 500% CPU. the CPU cores heat to the 90s Celsius. Below are some specs, let me know if you need more to help answer. Thanks!!!
    MacBook Pro
    OS X 10.9.4
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Adobe Premiere Pro CS 6 - version 6.0.0
Here's the CPU and temps before Premiere plays anything...
Here's while it is playing through a video...

First of all, I strongly recommend that you update to 6.0.5. You'll reap the rewards of many bug fixes. I won't venture whether that alone will help with the temperature.
As you probably know, video processing is one of the most processor-intensive activities you can ask your computer to do. Exactly how hard your CPUs will be pushed depends on at least four factors:
The type of video, namely the codec. Those that use interframe compression are much more processor-intensive than intraframe compression.
the resolution, or pixel dimensions, of the video: higher resolution = more pixels = more work
the number of layers in your sequence. And be aware that if you're using nested sequences, you need to include all the layers in each of them.
effects. Some effects like scaling and color correction require a lot of processing.
One key data point you left out regarding your computer is the graphics card. A card that supports GPU processing will take a lot of the stress off of the CPU. From the system specs you provided, I gather you're on the Late 2011 MBP. If it has a 6750M or 6770M with 1GB of VRAM, then it's supported for CS6, but not if you have the 512MB version. (Here are system requirements for CS6: System requirements | Adobe Premiere Pro)

  • Beachball on boot with MacBook Air + kernel_task using 138% of CPU

My wife's MacBook Air has recently become unusable - when you boot, it seemingly operates fine until the Finder launches, at which point the beachball appears and persists indefinitely. No applications can be launched, files accessed, etc - the only think you can do is hard shutdown.
Booted in Safe Mode and set Activity Monitor to launch on startup, then restarted in normal - kernel_task is using 138% of the CPU consistently, beachball issue present.
Shut down and booted again in Safe Mode and the issue is not present, with kernel_task using an appropriate amount of memory. This is the wife's computer, I'm a PC guy, so I only know little bits of Mac stuff - repaired permissions, etc - to no results. Any ideas on how to move forward in resolving this?
    Thanks in advance.

First, you might delete the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file while in safe mode.
    Then try this:
Delete caches to resolve some startup problems:
Boot into single-user mode. After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it. At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN after each commandline:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
If you were successful then enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/*
    rm -rf /Library/Caches/*
    reboot
I suggest you print out the above in a large mono-spaced font to be sure you do not make any errors when entering the commands. When in single-uwer mode you have 'root' access, so it's important that you not make any mistakes. Note that there are spaces between a command and what follows, so be sure you type each line above properly.

  • Kacpid uses 30% of cpu after kernel upgrade

After the recent kernel/xorg upgrade, I've had a few problems crop up.  First, I lost the ability to suspend in gnome.  A fix by allan was posted in the forums, so I was able to get that working, however my laptops suspend fn key still doesn't work.  Closing the lid works fine however.  The most annoying of my problems is kacpid, which is suddenly hogging 30% of my cpu.  This only happens after logging into gnome, but beyond that, I have no idea of the cause.  Loading arch with the fallback entry in grub does not solve the problem.  I'm going to install the zen kernel later tonight to see if that fixes things, but other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Joy,
Couple of things to you may want to post -  OS/DB, JDK version, RAM capacity, no.of CPUs.
Which jlaunch process is the cause for this - dispatcher or server ?
The max server heap size - you can change it to 2048M as increasing the heap memory to a high value may cause performance issues.
Is your PI system exposed to internet ? If yes are you using a web dispatcher ?
Also is there any actual load on the system ? i mean is it a production server ?
    Cheers....,
    Raghu

  • Web browser processes use over 100% CPU (OS 10.6.8)

Hey, I know this problem has come up a lot in the last couple of years, but I've looked everywhere, at every thread and possible solution to my problem and none have ever worked, so as a last resort I'm going to just straight up ask bout again and hope I'm missing something.
So whenever anything on my browser is moving, wether it be Flash, HTML 5, Java or even an embedded video, on every browser I've tried from Opera to Safari and every time it will put two or three processes related to the browser up to 60%, usually amounting to over 120%. I have tried doing a fresh install of Snow Leopard, which only softened the problem for a small while. This problem, and a couple others started happening after the 10.6.8 update was installed. I have never installed Safar Extensions, I have fixed permissions, cleared caches, binned files, tried running Safari under 32-bit and 32-bit Rosetta.
Nothing works. After 20 seconds of a youtube video my macbook will freeze and ask me to hold down the power button. If I download the video through activity and play it in VLC it's fine. If I play it in Quicktime it's fine for 20 seconds and then the video stutters and slows right down before the audio stops and Quicktime refuses to play anything unless it's closed.
Among other problems caused by the update: Alt 3 is no longer hash, it just turns my cursor into a crosshair temporarily and MDS/MDworker sometimes randomly decide they're going to join in on the rogue processes for a while. I'm so close to having to sell a bunch of stuff in order to get a laptop so I can finish my uni course, it's particularly horrible knowing that I rely on my macbook for all my university work and gigs yet it's been letting me down so much.

Oh, I posted this to the Macbook forum as it's ambiguous whether the update caused a hardware/software confliction, since a fresh install of Snow Leopard did not work.

  • FSEVENTSD using 90-100% CPU after updating to 10.6.4

My iMac, previously running fine, is now running very slow. After reading some things here and elsewhere, I tried shutting down Spotlight indexing using Terminal (don't recall exactly what I did). That did kill Spotlight but I am still having the problem. I also reinstalled Snow Leopard from my original retail disc and then did the combo update. Still no good. I bring up Activity Monitor and FSEVENTSD is constantly running at 90-100%. This has persisted for a few days now. FYI, I do have both Firewire and USB 2 drives connected. I did seem to notice that the problem may have started when I reconnected the Firewire drive after doing the reinstall. It may have been a coincidence though.
Please help. This is killing my productivity since even my mouse is running slow.

  • Macbook slow on battery after water spillage

Few months ago I spilled water on my macbook. I turned it off instantly and put it in rice, fortunately it's now working.
The only problem is that when I use it on battery, it is very slow. Even the mouse pointer is lagging when I am moving it. When I used it on batterry, it discharged normally, and when I plug the power cable the batterry gets charged.
When I start it in safe mode, it work well on battery.
I was thinking that a component might have been damaged when water was spilled,  a component that is not used while on safe mode.
Do you have any idea of what the problem could be?
    Thank you for your help

  • Skype on Mac using over 130% CPU

Hi, skype is using 130% of my CPU almost constantly while in a video call. I can't do anything else while having a skype call open without major slowdowns.  My mac, being a mac, doesn't allow me to end specific threads of the program. I've heard there is a specific thread that uses all of the CPU that can be stopped. Skype, this is ridiculous. Please fix this, I've read other forum posts about the same issue with no feedback from the actual company. Macbook Pro 13-inch (Late 2013)2.8 GHz Intel Core i78 GB 1600 MHz DDR3Intel Iris 1536 MB

Hi, yes I did. In fact, I always use the latest Version of Skype (currently V7.9.746), same goes for Mac OSx and all other installed Software. I even performed a(nother) complete fresh install of Yosemite, installed all updates, and tried using the latest version of Skype. Complete "vanilla" system, only the apple provided Yosemite-patches and Skype. For a short period of time even without firewall and antivir, just the MacBook, connected via GBit LAN to a 100Mbit Internet connection. Have tried a new user as well. I have received complaints of other people, having the same problem, using even stronger hardware (2.9Ghz).  It seems there is nothing we can do about it except waiting for a new version, that MIGHT fix the well known problem.

  • Keyboard keys typing themselves after water spillage

    Hello,
I spilled water on my wireless mac keyboard.  I have left it upside down to air dry for a few days but when I put the batteries in and start it up the keyboard keeps typing itself and won't let me do anything.  Can I do anything to save the keyboard?
    Thank you
    kiera

I have been letting it dry longer as suggested perhaps not long enough yet, I tried it and it has stopped typing by itself.  The middle row of keys and the space bar is working but nothing else.  Are the rest likely to come back or is it done for?

  • "AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin" uses too much CPU. How to replace it with Preview?

The AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin uses over 250% CPU when I open a dozen of pdf files from the Internet in Safari 7.0.2. The Adobe Read is 10.1.9 as seen from Safari > Preferences > Security > Internet Plug-in > Manage Website Settings > Adobe Reader.
Can I replace the Adobe Reader Internet Plug-in with Preview or anything else using less CPU?  (But it's too time consuming to downlog the pdf files and open thme using other tools e.g. iBook, Preview etc.)
    Or any solution at all?

Most PDF documents can be read using the built-in support of OS X & Safari. If you remove the adobe or other pdf plug-in files from HD/Library/Internet Plug ins while any web browsers are closed, then Safari should display them.

  • MacBook Air kernel_task using 130 to 150 % CPU overload with fan overheat

After hours and hours to get a diagnostic for this problem, I have solve it.
It seems to be a troubleshooting with the Apple ETHERNET to USB adapter used thru an USB Powered hub (A Kensington here)...
    My configuration was:
    MacBook Air 1.8Ghz SSD
Wireless BT Apple Keyboard (Aluminum) and Mouse
    24" Apple Display (DVI)
    USB USB Powered
iPod Classic 80 Go used by iTunes and Time Machine for Backups
    __!! Apple Ethernet/USB Adapter !!__
    Canon Pixma USB Printer
Overload CPU with kernel_task up to 150% was cycling.
That's the first reason of the difficulty to diagnose it.
Because the adapter was so hot I couldn't even touch it, I thought it was probably in charge of this mess.
Reading some forums, it's possible that there's multiple reasons for an overload CPU time by the kernel_task and this is one of these.
If you encounter messes with kernel_task using an Apple Ethernet/USB adapter, check it first to do anything else.
    Hope to have help you...
    Nick

it seems to be temperature issue, i.e. the system tries with the kernel task to avoid an overheating of the cpu/gpu. those guys here
