Kernel_task using up over 100% CPU!

I have a Macbook Pro 10.6.8, and in the last few days, it has started running dramatically different.  If I try to do anything beyond basic browser surfing (one tab open at a time), the entire computer will freeze for a few minutes.  As well, it has started to take at least ten minutes to fully load when turning on, and this was never an issue before.
I have 116GB of free space on my computer, and I am always very aware of not having too many programs running at a time.
How do I solve this issue and find out why my kernel_task in the Activity Moniter is taking up 100-105% of my cpu!
Thank you.

Hey! I just read someone's suggestion to reset my NVRAM & PRAM and it worked! My Kernel task went from 110% CPU to 10% ! ! !

Thanks!

  • ReportCrash using over 100% cpu after opening photoshop cs6

Currently running Mavericks on my macbook pro & just started noticing a problem. I'm sure its been there for a while, judging by past performance of photoshop, but just now caught it in activity monitor.
After I launch photoshop CS6, AM automatically shows ReportCrash as using upwards of 100% cpu, which explains why my computer seems to be dying when i'm working in the program.
As far as I could get with this problem on my own is checking concole to see what might be causing the process to appear. Not sure how to fix the problem though, which is why I come to the forums seeking guidance!
thanks in advance for any help!

Same thing is happening to me. Seems like it started about a week ago, fan is running a whole lot now. I'm not saying it's the cause but the "top" utility shows /System/Library/CoreServices/ReportCrash running at 103% - 105%. Weird.
Changes: In the past 10 days Software Update delivered new versions of OS X 10.9.2 and iTunes 11.1.5, and I installed and ran DiskAid 6.5.3 and evasi0n7-mac-1.0.7. Also, Chrome began to hang several times a day in the past week so I removed it and re-installed it, which seems to have solved that problem.
Anybody else hearing the fan a lot and seeing these 100%+ utilitizations lately?

  • Ichat consumes over 100% CPU in video chat mode.

    Hi,
I just updated my MBP (mid 2009) with new Snow Leopard. Ever since then, some of applications hangs, especially ichat, Mail, iphoto, safari.
Is it normal that iChat consumes over 100% CPU in video chat mode? Does everyone have the same problem?

Hello all. Ralph, I really appreciate all of your help on these iChat threads. I too am having the same issues with CPU overload on both of my Macbook Pro 2.16 GHz machines. I believe I may have traced the problem to older, non-Core 2 Duo chip computers such as mine. I have an iChat crazy family - lots of us spread across the country. The ones who have newer machines with a Core 2 Duo do not have this problem. They have super crisp, normal CPU usage (never exceeding 80%) chats. Sadly, this is not the case when I try with either of my Macbook Pro's running the older chips.
To clarify, I have also taken all of the steps mentioned here and in other threads to try to address the problem. I have reinstalled Snow Leopard, adjusted the maximum bandwith to as low as 200 kbps, tested my download, upload speeds, etc. Nothing seems to work. Ichat it essentially useless. I wish I had an answer for this issue. I assume Apple will address this in the next OS update.

  • I was using the iCloud finder app, and it showed the computer that I'm using is over 100 miles away when it's not.  Help?

I was using iCloud's location service, and it showed that the computer I'm using is over 100 miles away from where it actually is.  Can't figure it out.  Switched location on and off on the Macbook Pro, but it hasn't made any difference.  It's showing a location I've never been to.

You do not need to sign into their Wi-Fi.
Your mac will determine its position using Wi-Fi positioning system (WPS)
It will look for the strong access points and look up the position in a database. After moving, the database entry for a moved access point may still be wrong. I don't know, what you could do at your end, since you cannot change the skyhook database.

  • Premiere Pro using over 100% CPU

When I open up Premiere Pro, it is using about 6.5% CPU. I can cut, move around in the timeline and add effects ok. But when I play the video (even if its just one track with no effects) my computer starts running very hot and Premiere starts using over 500% CPU. the CPU cores heat to the 90s Celsius. Below are some specs, let me know if you need more to help answer. Thanks!!!
    MacBook Pro
    OS X 10.9.4
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Adobe Premiere Pro CS 6 - version 6.0.0
Here's the CPU and temps before Premiere plays anything...
Here's while it is playing through a video...

First of all, I strongly recommend that you update to 6.0.5. You'll reap the rewards of many bug fixes. I won't venture whether that alone will help with the temperature.
As you probably know, video processing is one of the most processor-intensive activities you can ask your computer to do. Exactly how hard your CPUs will be pushed depends on at least four factors:
The type of video, namely the codec. Those that use interframe compression are much more processor-intensive than intraframe compression.
the resolution, or pixel dimensions, of the video: higher resolution = more pixels = more work
the number of layers in your sequence. And be aware that if you're using nested sequences, you need to include all the layers in each of them.
effects. Some effects like scaling and color correction require a lot of processing.
One key data point you left out regarding your computer is the graphics card. A card that supports GPU processing will take a lot of the stress off of the CPU. From the system specs you provided, I gather you're on the Late 2011 MBP. If it has a 6750M or 6770M with 1GB of VRAM, then it's supported for CS6, but not if you have the 512MB version. • MacBook Air kernel_task using 130 to 150 % CPU overload with fan overheat

After hours and hours to get a diagnostic for this problem, I have solve it.
It seems to be a troubleshooting with the Apple ETHERNET to USB adapter used thru an USB Powered hub (A Kensington here)...
    My configuration was:
    MacBook Air 1.8Ghz SSD
Wireless BT Apple Keyboard (Aluminum) and Mouse
    24" Apple Display (DVI)
    USB USB Powered
iPod Classic 80 Go used by iTunes and Time Machine for Backups
    __!! Apple Ethernet/USB Adapter !!__
    Canon Pixma USB Printer
Overload CPU with kernel_task up to 150% was cycling.
That's the first reason of the difficulty to diagnose it.
Because the adapter was so hot I couldn't even touch it, I thought it was probably in charge of this mess.
Reading some forums, it's possible that there's multiple reasons for an overload CPU time by the kernel_task and this is one of these.
If you encounter messes with kernel_task using an Apple Ethernet/USB adapter, check it first to do anything else.
    Hope to have help you...

it seems to be temperature issue, i.e. the system tries with the kernel task to avoid an overheating of the cpu/gpu. those guys here

  • Help! Kernel_task using high percentage of CPU.

    Hi guys,
I am using Macbook Pro with Retna. Recently my macbook started to slow down while making loud fan noise. I noticed that Kernel Task was using high percentage of CPU (aroung 600). This is not the first time. Last time I took it to apple store and got fix, but this time I can not do that because my warrenty expired.
I tried to fix it by formating the macbook, but it did not work.
Could anyone help me with this?!?

Do SMC reset. how u do it???????.... well connect the magsafe adapter to the mac, Shutdown the mac. Then Hold ctrl+opt+shift+power button for 6-8 sec. Leave all the keys and have a watch on the Magsafe, the amber should turn Green the moment u leave all the keys indicating a successfull Reset. Then unplug the magsafe wait fro 3 sec plug it again. Start the machine , still the issue is there then finally do a PRAM/NVRAM reset holding cmd+opt+p+r as u start the machine. Machine would chime Twicce on the 3rd chime leave all the keys. Even after this doesnot do good then battery reset is required for which u ll hav to take it to Apple service store.

  • Web browser processes use over 100% CPU (OS 10.6.8)

Hey, I know this problem has come up a lot in the last couple of years, but I've looked everywhere, at every thread and possible solution to my problem and none have ever worked, so as a last resort I'm going to just straight up ask bout again and hope I'm missing something.
So whenever anything on my browser is moving, wether it be Flash, HTML 5, Java or even an embedded video, on every browser I've tried from Opera to Safari and every time it will put two or three processes related to the browser up to 60%, usually amounting to over 120%. I have tried doing a fresh install of Snow Leopard, which only softened the problem for a small while. This problem, and a couple others started happening after the 10.6.8 update was installed. I have never installed Safar Extensions, I have fixed permissions, cleared caches, binned files, tried running Safari under 32-bit and 32-bit Rosetta.
Nothing works. After 20 seconds of a youtube video my macbook will freeze and ask me to hold down the power button. If I download the video through activity and play it in VLC it's fine. If I play it in Quicktime it's fine for 20 seconds and then the video stutters and slows right down before the audio stops and Quicktime refuses to play anything unless it's closed.
Among other problems caused by the update: Alt 3 is no longer hash, it just turns my cursor into a crosshair temporarily and MDS/MDworker sometimes randomly decide they're going to join in on the rogue processes for a while. I'm so close to having to sell a bunch of stuff in order to get a laptop so I can finish my uni course, it's particularly horrible knowing that I rely on my macbook for all my university work and gigs yet it's been letting me down so much.

  • Adobe premiere elements 10.0 uses more than 100% cpu on macbook pro lion osx 10.7.3

    Hello All,
    We have a macbook pro 17" 2.66Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 running lion osx 10.7.3.
When trying to run a video in adobe premiere elements 10.0, the video really lags. I checked the activity monitor and the cpu usage for the elements app process goes above 100%. Sometimes even 170%.
No wonder why its struggling to render the video.
    Anyone noticed this issue too?
    All suggestions welcome.
    regards

    Hello OgelThorpe,
Thank you for the suggestion. I will try that soon. My macbook meets well over the hardware requirements for that package. Also only the cpu usage is high, i have 4GB ram and only 500-700 MB of that gets used by adobe premiere.
I have have run the hardware test in a loop and it passed everytime, so i dont doubt the hardware.

  • Facetime using 100+% CPU?

Hello everyone, recently I have noticed my fans kicking into over drive while on a facetime video call, I checked Activity Monitor and realized that Facetime was using over 100% CPU, with the system running at about 10%.
I found that making Facetime full screen, and using the 4-finger swipe to hide Facetime instantly dropped the CPU down to about 34%. However, the video is paused, making this work-around pretty useless, considering what Facetime is used for.
I am not sure if this is because of updates or firmwares, i have all the latest updates, the OS is Yosemite 10.10.1.
If anyone has any information regarding this, or is experiencing the same issue, a response will be greatly appreciated. I have searched on the internet, however I can't seem to find any solutions or viable work-arounds.
    Below is my MBP configuration
    Macbook Pro early 2011 2.3GHZ i5
    4GB 1333 MHZ DDR3
    Startup Disk Samsung SSD 250
Intel HD graphics 3000 384 MB
New MacbookPro battery, few months old.

    Another information :
if I run two java program on the same time (using same instance of eclipse), the two javaw.exe each use exactly 50% (if nothing else if running).

  • Mail and Preview get stuck using way too much CPU

Has anyone else had an issue with either Mail or Preview getting stuck using over 100% CPU for no apparant reason. This has only happened since downloading 10.8.
With Mail, I can't figure out what sets it off. It happens occasionally when I'm replying to an email, but it doesn't happen everytime. When it happens I have to quit Mail to get it to stop.
With Preview, it happens on some pdf documents when I search for a word. After I'm done searching, the CPU percentage will be going crazy (!00-125%) until I quit the app.
    I have a 2011 Mac Mini with 2.3 ghz processor and 8 G RAM

Not a solution, but if the Podcast feed is dormant, why not unsubscribe?
As to the file structure for media on the device it is deliberately obscured as a countermeasure to casual piracy. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. Content put on the iPod by a non-iPod aware product is going to treat it like any external drive. The iPod firmware won't read that media.

  • Mail uses more than 120'%  CPU when fetching headers

    Hello,
mail uses more than 100% CPU and the system response gets slow, affecting the other processes when mail starts, and the mail activity viewer says: fetching headers.
It happens when I check my mail with mail client directly in the same server, or when I connect from another machine, my mail Version 2.1 (752/752.2), I have 3 IMAP accounts.
I have verified and repaired the disk (no errors), I have set up mail from scratch, the first network connection is ethernet,
I am using mail program on the server trying to check the mail in the same server. when I open the program, and it starts to fetch headers, the 100 % percent or more of CPU is used (128%,etc).
when I try to conect from another mail program to this server the 100% cpu or more is get when fetching headers (I am using a firewire connection, and the another machine is a MAC PRO (4 processors, 2 x 2.66 GhZ Dual Core Intel Xeon, 1GB ram 667 mhz DDR2 fB/Dimm, MAC OSX 10.4.9, with no other programs running), so the problem is on the server.
I have booted the machine in safe mode (the red text "safe mode" appeared), and the same things happened, I have some screen shots available
from the mail forum they told me that I should check this problem in the server forum.

  • Mac Pro is running over 100%

My Mac Pro is running over 100% CPU when running a music sequence program called Digital Performer.
It has never done this before, not until I purchased Native Instrument music library app.
The funny this is that when it is just idle CPU is around 75%.
My Mac Pro is late 2007..any thoughts. Is it time to get another computer (old)
    Thank you

Hi, it could be good, if it's doing it faster.
For instance a Quad Core MacPro could theoretically use up to 400% CPU, some Apps aren't threaded well & use only one core, some 2 CPUs but not cores.
Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
