Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Kernel Task is slowing down MacBook Pro

    Hi All,
I've been having a lot of issues with a very slow running MBP and everything freezes up every few minutes.  Right now I'm running Safari right now and the Kernel Task is using 516MB of Memory and my 4GB is almost entirely used.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  (Please keep in mind I'm not very computer savvy so simple, quick tips would be best for me!)

  • Help with my MacBook Pro early 2008 kernel task use 120% of my cpu

I have the MacBook Pro early 2008 10.6.2 and when MBP start freeze for 5min and after the kernel task use 120% of my cpu all the time .... i have try clean install of leopard ,time machine to 10.5.2 but the problem still exist ... any help pls ?

OK. A Google search of "kernel_task" yielded the following link along with many others:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10330458-263.html
Evidently it will take some doing to narrow down exactly which task is causing the problem. This link has a list of suggestions for doing just that. Hopefully it will be a start.
Post back with how it goes.
    Good luck!

  • Final cut pro x with kernel task is eating up all my ram

hi, i have this new iMac i7 with 16 giga ram
when i open fcpx it slows down all my computer
and kernel task goes up till 5 giga
and fcp is using 9 giga
what can i do to make it work like it should ?

Yosemite handles Ram differently from previous versions. Do not think about the RAM, if FCPX is working fine, then everything is OK. If the RAM is the main issue you should ask this question on Yosemite forum for more detailed answer.

  • How can I fix kernel task from using 300% of my CPU?

Everytime I disconnect my MacBook Pro from the wall, Kernel Task uses 300% or more of my CPU and stays that way until I connect the power. I've tryed resetting the System Management Controller, restarting the computer, logging in to another account, and deleted all "bad" files (problem files I've found out via Google). Going to Safe Mode does remove this problem, so it's maybe a program error?

The most likely reason for it is that the battery needs to be replaced.

  • Kernel Task over 400% CPU usage

Hello, I have some questions about the Kernel Task in my activity monitor.
Recently, after a hard disk failure, I have my Macbook Pro wiped and start afresh with Mavericks. All was well, but it slowed down tremendously in the last couple of days. I checked the activity monitor and Kernel Task is always around 400-470%, sometimes it even peaked to 1000+%! I closed all my applications but it is still taking up all my RAM. I cannot work when it is freezing up every 2 seconds. What is the problem?
Here is the report, if it helps:

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • I'm experiencing issue with MacBook's performance. Kernel Task is using 612 MB of RAM.

    Hi Apple Users,
I am new to this kind of forum/support thread. I am experiencing poor performance on my MacBook Pro. One thing I noticed is the kernel task is eating up too much ram. I have no idea how to fix this. Please share your expertise or past experiences in dealing with kind of problem. I would greatly appreciate for any inputs on this kind of issue.
I have some details that I think might help since I read several threads related to my issue.

  • Kernel task is hogging lots of threads and CPU time

My Mavericks Quad Macbook Pro is getting pretty slow these days and at some point I'll have to reinstall everything I think. However I can't start that for a while as I have important projects on the go. I looked in Activity Monitor first and I can see a kernel task constantly running with no indication of what it is doing. So I opened Console and looked at the Diagnostic log. I can see a lot of lines referring to com.apple.message. Hundreds of identical lines actually. I did not have Messages running so I opened it, and sure enough that showed up in console live. However the log shows a slightly different app and a totally different UUID, which seems odd.
Anybody understand what this is all about? See below. I opened one of the endlessly repeating items plus one that I know is from the Messages app below it.

The kernel_task is the heart of the operating system.  It will have on the order of a 100 threads (more or less).  So when you ask the operating system to do something, like read/write a disk, do network I/O, talk to your mouse/trackpad, keyboard, monitor, etc... kernel_task is the code that is going to do that at the lowest levels.
Also if you have installed any 3rd party drivers (kernel extensions), they are going to become part of kernel_task and the CPU time they use will be part of kernel_task.
If you have anti-malware, Mac cleaner or memory cleaner software installed, many of these packages install drivers that then try to out-guess the kernel_task and often result in slowing down the system, interfering with the normal operation of the system, or causing kernel panics.  These kinds of packages are not recommended by long term forum contributors.
Please provide the output from EtreCheck, which will show the 3rd party additions you have installed.

  • Kernel task is using many resources on my mac

    Hi
I was working on my Mac but is coming very slow sometimes so I found the problem is the kernel task.
Lex I already use the Clean My Mac and since the first time I delete a lot of things I don't even remember how many. Should I format my drive?
About the iCleanMemory so the system will clear the RAM by it self or should I do something different or use another program?
    So here is the report:

"CleanMyMac" is trash capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery.
There is no way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2, and the developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Mavericks read: OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks and follow the procedure under Time Machine or other disk migration.
Other problems may exist but those concerns will be rendered moot by erasing your system, which must be accomplished.

  • Launching Mail becomes a runaway process and creates a massive memory leak in the kernel task

I have 16gig of ram, my kernel task is currently using 12gig, Mail is no longer responding while using all remaining ram
Mail has been jammed at 100% of one i7 core for about 2 hours now, disk activity is almost nonexistant.
it was running poorly yesterday, rebuilding the mailboxes did not yeild a positive effect
    permissions and drive check out
Quicklook is also reporting a lot of bs when finder windows are open:
    example:
10/26/13 1:40:20.985 PM quicklookd[14056]: Warning: Cache image returned by the server has size range covering all valid image sizes. Binding: VariantBinding [0x603] flags: 0x8 binding: FileInfoBinding [0x503] - extension: mp3, UTI: public.mp3, fileType: ???? request size:32 scale: 1
I hate the new activity monitor so much, none the less, "Memory Pressure" is pinned
Seeing a whole lot of this in the console as well:
    10/26/13 2:57:11.000 AM kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR TM6P kSMCBadArgumentError(0x89) fKeyHashTable=0x0xffffff802ba32000

    I feel your pain!
Mac Pro with 32 GB, and Mail takes about 5 minutes to "start" - well, show the Mail Menu. Then, another few minutes to actually draw the window... but wait, it STILL needs more time to actually show the accounts and mail.
The (stupid) new Activity Monitor show Mail using 12 GB of RAM, and several com plist files also sucking up CPU time and RAM. Why Apple has to dumb-down good information to "Memory Pressure" is beyond me!
I have reported thsi to Apple, and they had a Support person get in touch with me. I have sent several spindumps and tarball files last week, but no reply. Today, I pinged the support person who said Apple Engineering was reviewing the information, and would likely get back sometime as *maybe* some others were experiencing this problem...

Problem was solved by resetting PRAM and NVRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)

A Kernel Task runs at 700% processor power between every 5 minutes to 1 hour, slowing down everything I do. I have tried Onyx, zapped the PRAM and reinstalled Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?

pan did you solve it? i have the same issue. i see people writing 'oh no kernel on 200-300%... well my kernel runs up to 600-800% anytime. i'm running os 10.6.8, i have 2010 2GHz intel core i7, with 16gb ram and... go figure. even ssd drive, thinking i have the fastest possible hardware installed to ease up on any task i'm about to do. but when it gets slow then safari just 'quits' on me, mouse cursor gets so sloppy slow (that's how i always realize that kernel is knocking on the door again). but... i do use screen, 24 apple LED and i have the laptop still open, so dual screen. i think it happens way less when the laptop is closed and i use just the big screen... but i refuse, this is not a calculator, its god **** macbook pro, so if one extra screen kills my workflow then i have to... idont know what. help apple, wth! and your safari ***** so much it's not even nice, it's so buggy but i'm the crazy one, because i keep using it. that's all

  • Kernel task uses 750MBs of RAM since installing Mavericks

    Hi All,
I'm new to these forums and could really use some help. After installing Mavericks I noticed my system was running deathly slow even with no applications open. At first I assumed it was indexing so I waited a day. I noticed kernel task, the finder, and icon services agent were using unusual amounts of RAM. Kernel task would go up to 750MBs - it never went that high before. The finder would go up to 300MBs and stay there, even after closing every window. Only quitting and restarting Finder would solve that issue.
I've tried repairing disk permissions. I also tried getting rid of Parallels, since MS finally released OneNote for Mac. This made no difference. I deleted lots of widgets and unecessary applications and possible bloatware (like TechTools Pro). I installed AppCleaner to make sure I got everything. It got most, but definitely not all associated files. I then went into the terminal and did the command that reveals hidden files/folders. I then deleted the daemon for techtools pro just in case.
After all of this, kernel tasks is still using 750MBs and 7.9GBs of RAM is being taken up (other than background processes all I have fired up are Firefox and Skype. I'm at my wits end and would be so grateful for some help.

  • Kernel Tasks using a lot of bandwidth

My network has been running VERY slow lately.  When I checked the Activity Monitor my kernel tasks were perpetually receiving almost 8 GB of info and sending almost 2 GB of info.  What can I do to resolve this?   I am running a 15" MacBook Pro Retina 2.3 GHz Intel Core 17 with 16 GB memory and a 500 GB SSD drive.  I am running Mas OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.

  • Kernel task high CPU usage?

So I noticed my macbook pro (17" 2011, 16GB RAM) running slow, especially graphics.  opened up the activity monitor, and lo and behold there is something using 283% of my CPU: kernel_task.  Before I even ask how this is possible, what is kernel task, and could this be responsible for my sluggish machine?
I did notice a week ago that google chrome is allowing many pop up windows with messages trying to get me to download system checks and other nonsense... Not sure if this is related but that's annoying too.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

ALso, restarting does nothing to alter this slow state it seems.  Restarted twice with no improvement
