Kernel Trap

Lately, every day or two, my computer's screen will suddenly have a horizontal ripple travel up it, leaving behind a message saying I have to restart my macintosh, and locking up everything that I was in the midst of doing. I restart it and everything is fine for a while, then it does it again. The error report it gives me upon startup is this:

Anyone have an idea what I can do to fix this?

I will guess one of two things. The good one would be that there's a conflict with your Pace Anti-Piracy software. If it came with an uninstaller, use that and run without that for a while.
The bad one would be something with your video card. The kernel extensions in the backtrace there are all related to your video card, and it could be the culprit of the Pace software isn't.

  • Photoshop causing unresolved kernel trap

Has anyone else been experiencing full-system unresolved kernel trap crashes since the last Photoshop CS4 update? If I never open Photoshop, the system is fine - no crashing whatsoever. However if I even so much as open Photoshop, within a number of hours, the entire system crashes with the unresolved kernel trap error. It appears to have something to do with the video card as well.
One of my friends is experiencing this same issue on her PC with Photoshop. It clearly has something to do with with Adobe's last update since we both noted this new behavior right after their last update. Just curious how many others are experiencing the same thing and if anyone has any information about it.

    hi sboben --
    Just checking here . . .
Did both you guys repair permissions after loading on the Adobe?
If not, you might want to do that just to test the basic . . .

  • Unresolved Kernel Trap: Booting & System Errors.

The computer has been Crashing more and more frequently as of late.
The latest report gave me this:
    2-11-2010:

We have ran a hardware check and it returned negative regarding any hardware defects.
I have also used Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer all of the old hard drive onto a different one (Not a newer one, just one that was being used for storage, that our older OS4 was on.) We still seem to be getting the same effect (although it is not near as sever) after having transfered the data. We completely wiped the old hdd an reconverted it into a storage drive, and it seems to be able to read & write data efficiently (although, I should note, the entire system seems to be slower than it was; it was slower even before we swapped drives, which leads me to think RAM?). Never the less before we swapped drives, we could hear the old drive randomly spin at very high speeds. (In turn, this caused the fan to also spin at a very high, and unusual, RPM.) We were experiencing, during this time, system failures and freezes (where nothing would respond, no Mouse or Keyboard interaction, eventually resulting with a system restart that would not always restart).
The information is completely backed up and we have performed a system reinstall (Not a fresh from scratch system re-instal, but a system reinstall none the less.)
I believe the hard drive/RAM may be failing, but am otherwise unsure. Does anyone have any idea what my problem may be???

Try booting from an external drive (firewire) if you can and see if the problems persist. That might isolate it being a particular drive issue.
I think on your model Mac the fans are controlled by software. If the system is crashing the computer automatically goes into fan overdrive to prevent overheating.
If you have multiple RAM chips try pulling all but the minimum required and see if the problems go away. Swap and test again until you have it isolated.
There's a utility called Memtest that's supposed to test RAM.
Apple Hardware Test not showing anything isn't proof nothing exists. Sometimes it helps to run an extended test.
    [X-Lab: The Apple Hardware Test|http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html]
    [Apple's AHT support|http://www.info.apple.com/support/aht.html]
It would be helpful to know which threads crashed, though the combination of issues suggests a hardware issue.

  • Kernel trap problem

    Hi
    I'm using a 13 inch mid-2012 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.9.2
For some weeks the computer has been crashing at random points, usually with the screen getting glitchy and freezing. The only alternative is to power off and then power on. Normally it won't power until several attempts, as it makes a 3-beep alarm sound.
I took it to the Genius Bar, and they reinstalled everything but said they couldn't find any problems.
I don't always get an error report, but here's the latest one. Any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

Three beeps on start-up usually means that you have bad RAM. If you're still under warranty, I would take the machine back to the Apple Store, along with a copy of your kernel panic log, and have them test the RAM (you can actually test the RAM yourself, using an app such as Rember).
But it certainly look as if it's a problem with your RAM. Since you've stock RAM, and since you can add your own RAM if you're out of warranty and Apple wants a fortune for RAM, if you do have bad RAM you can get new RAM from reputable dealers at a good price.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Kernel Trap during update to 10.9.3

    Hello,
During the installation of the update containing 10.9.3, iTunes 11.2, and Digital Camera Raw Update 5.05 I received a problem report listing a kernal trap.
The installation process took a very long time but finally it did restart and the Problem report came up. 10.9.3 is on the computer and so far it is behaving normally. I don't know the significanse of the report. Is there something I should do? The report follows: Thanks! Mot

About a half hour Kyle, and then it restarted on its own, and I got the "kernal trap" message. So far no problems that I can detect. Wait until someone with a bit more knowledge looks at this thread and gives you a recommendation.
    Best, Mot

  • Mac won't shutdown after Leopard upgrade; Kernel trap report

After upgrading to Leopard last week, my iMac has repeatedly failed to shut down properly. When I select shutdown, the system seems to be turning off as usual, closing all programmes and the screen switching off to black, but one fan is still left running. The fan keeps running indefinitely (I've left it overnight many times and it's still been running in the morning) and the only way I can shut it off is by manually holding down the power switch for 5 seconds.
When I do that, and then turn the computer back on, I'm given a report mentioning a "kernel trap" etc, which I can't really decypher. If anybody could help me, I would really, really appreciate it.

    HI,
I think it's a kernel panic you are experiencing. Possibly when you upgraded to Leopard, a 3rd party software/hardware isn't compatible.
Go here to Resolve Kernel Panics
*"my iMac has repeatedly failed to shut down properly"*
    Try resetting the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
The System Management Controller (SMC) is a chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any power issue, resetting the SMC may resolve it. The SMC controls several functions, including:
Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so forth.
Handling system resets from various commands.

  • G4 Silver OSX unexpectedly quitting due to Kernel Trap at CPU 1

This machine has started crashing after it has been left on awhile. It is almost like it is in sleep mode
and won't wake but when I restart the OSX crash message comes up.
I tried to send this last night but Safari kept crashing as well. I seemed that only the Apple site
was affected. I get into support pull up the G4 section and try to get into the forums and it crashed 4-5 times before I gave up. It crashed at exactly the same place each time. I surfed throughseveral sites with out Safari crashing after trying to get into Discussions Forum. I thought I had the safari crash log too but it didn't copy over to the doc I sent to work. Crash log follows.

  • G5 Kernel Trap panic at startup after chime - Help!

I have a Power Mac G5 2.0MHz Dual Core. The only externals are Mac keyboard, Mac mouse. No third party drivers installed since the HD is blank.
I can't even start up past the chime. After the chime, the screen gives me
    unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
         com.apple.driver.AppleMacRISC4PE(1.6.0d9)@0x322c3000
              dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.6)@0x322a5000
              dependency: com.apple.driver.IOPlatformFunction(1.7.0b1)@0x322b3000
I received this G5 a year ago. It was a working system, but the HD was pulled before I got it. I tried startup with Shift down. I tried startup with C-key down with bootable 10.4 CD.
I have put in a new Mac formated HD (no system installed yet) and reseated the RAM, but no luck. I cleaned the computer slots and reseated the monitor card.  I installed new RAM, zapping PRAM, cuda button, still no luck. I also tried putting RAM in 2nd slots in case the 1st slots were bad.
Upon startup holding Shift key I get this on screen:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DE020): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac11,2"
Does this mean a processor or logic board is bad? What are my options? If it is chiming at startup, would the hair dryer trick even be worth trying?
    Help!

I don't have the disc here. Do you suppose 10.4.0 will not run on it if 10.4.2 will?
    Absolutely, & 10.4.2 is a gray Machine specific Disc, Retail 10.4 Discs were 10.4.0, 10.4.3, & 10.4.6 as I recall.
10.5 Retail Disc should work also for any G5.

  • Kernel trap prevents normal reboot, can only safe boot

    Hi,
I was trying to connect my mid 2012 MacBook Air 13" with Mavericks 10.9.5 to a projector that I previously succesfully connected.   In the meantime I mistakenly clicked to connect to an unknown AirPlay device, thinking it was perhaps the projector.  As I was not able to connect to the projector, I wanted to reboot the computer but it never did.  It can safe boot and I obtained a kernel trap log file.  I tried disk utility to repair permissions, everything seems ok, but still cannot boot normally.  If anyone can help me identify what may be causing the problem, I'd be awaiting your suggestions.  Thanks in advance!

Thanks again for your suggestions Linc.
I wanted to give an update as the issue seems to be resolved through running software update.
Since I was able to use safe boot, I downloaded the 10.9.5 Combo Update file and ran the update.  Afterwards, the computer booted with no problems.  If anyone is experiencing repetitive kernel traps, I hope this will solve the problem for some of you as well!

  • Kernel Trap on Macbook. What is this?

I started getting this on my MacBook recently when playing World of Warcraft and using Ventrilo. Anyone have any idea what the heck this is and what might be causing it? Error is below.
    Thanks!

If you want someone who can understand that log, copy and paste it in a new post in the Tiger Forum. sometimes someone there will see it and respond; title it something like, "what does this panic log say please?"
    Otherwise try the following:
You are experiencing a Kernel Panic as seen and described in Apple doc.#106227. If not, disregard.

It looks like what I understand to be a kernel conflict or something. Something to do with multiple applications causing an unresolved task. I have also read that it might be due to loose RAM. Are there any suggestions?

    Hi Hatter,
Thank you for the feedback, I am already in the process of doing those steps before I wrote this question. The reason I am posting this is because I would really like to see if others have experienced problems with this. I want to be prepared with information when I have my appointment with the genius bar (this is my production mac and I need to finish up a project before I can get some known issues fixed).
By knowing if others have seen issues with cpu 2 this will help me in understanding the problem and know if I'm getting the correct information from the genius bar. IE I don't want to be back at the bar with my HEAVY mac pro trying to troubleshoot this over a long period of time if someone here has seen a similar message and I can shortcut what might be a long and tedious process of fixing this.
AGAIN, thank you for the feedback but I am doing those steps.

  • What is an unresolved kernel trap

I am preparing the G4 iBook to give to a friend and have eresed the HD, installed Leopard and upgraded to 10.5.8.  I am now installing software etc but it keeps having kernel panics and the Problem Comments note an "unresolved kernel trap."
The last KP occurred when I set about using Disk Utility to fix permissions in the hope that would solve the problem - that was before I had spotted the u k trap phrase in the report.
Until now the computer has worked for nearly 9 years without going wrong (worn out keyboard replaced with OEM about a year ago).  Does anyone know what this is and how it might be located and fixed please?
    Thank you.

    How to resolve kernel panics?
Depending on the log information, the cause may be bad RAM,
or other hardware weakness or failure, incorrect software or an
incompatibility within the system. Sometimes fonts can do it...
On occasion, a failure of a component on the logic board does it.

    Good luck & happy computing!
{PS: did you secure-erase and reformat the hard disk drive before
    installing a new system? This can help fix bad sectors on the HDD}
