Kernel Update to 3.10.9-1 Causes HIDs to load slowly.

After preforming the latest kernel update (3.10.9), all of my USB keyboards and mice load after ~10 minutes. Here is the snipped dmesg output:

Might have better luck posting to lkml.  Perhaps related, perhaps not... your mce error at 300 sec is symptomatic of a bad overclock:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Stress_Test
...but you did say this started to happen after the update to 3.10.9-1 so I'm not sure... can you downgrade and make it go away?  Note that there is a trivial difference between .9 and .8.

  • Kernel update (3.9.5-1) causes graphics issues, X11 "no screens found"

    Earlier I updated my system with pacman -Syu. Everything went smoothly. I rebooted and immediately noticed something was wrong with the console framebuffer - printing and scrolling are very, very slow and jerky, an error flashed by after fsck too quickly to read (since disappeared), and startx gave me the "no screens found" error. I do not have any custom X11 configuration.
    This is an MSi laptop with the (awful) nVidia Optimus (hardware mux).
    IGP is an Intel Ivybridge Mobile (GT2), don't know the exact chipset model, X logs indicate it's the i965.
    DGP is an NVIDIA GK104M (GeForce GTX 675MX).
    (New) Kernel: 3.9.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT ... x86_64
    (Old) Kernel: 3.9.4-1 ...
    I should mention that I use the acpi_call package to shut the DGP down, the command runs automatically at boot (but does not work! An AE_CALL error message is given, I have to run the turn_off_gpu.sh script manually after login). Nouveau is still being loaded into the kernel, regardless. I have tried removing the .conf file used by acpi_call from /etc/modules-load.d/, there was no effect. I also tried downgrading from the latest xf86-intel driver package, again, no effect - under either kernel. Additionally I tried using nomodeset and i915.modeset = 1 kernel parameters (which were necessary with a previous kernel version or Arch was unbootable, but not with 3.9.4-1). No effect. Each change was followed by a reboot, just to be sure. Systemd is loading everything normally except that it complains of no display-manager service ... because there isn't one.
    It may be trying to use the DGP, for which there are no drivers installed, as I have no desire to use that card with Linux, ever; I've no idea why/how a kernel update would change this, as I mentioned I have nothing fancy going on with kernel 3.9.4-1 and the graphics setup and X11 work just fine out of the box.
    Thanks in advance for you help.

    No, the i915.modeset parameter was necessary with an older kernel.
    I've now also tried kernel 3.9.6-1 and nvidia drivers, with AND without an xorg 10-monitor.conf file. Running kernel 3.9.6-1 seems to fix the console framebuffer issue, but the "no screens found" issue remains, xserver logs complain of not being to find intel module when using nvidia drivers (which require removal of intel drivers), and both sudo and netctl are broken - logs list pam-unix "conversation failed" error and time-out/failed dependency waiting for wplXXX - the wireless NIC - to start.
    Just to see, I tried the nvidia drivers with kernel 3.9.4-1 and got the "no screens found" error.
    Because I couldn't access the internet under kernel 3.9.6-1, I didn't get to test it with nouveau but I can't see how that would be any different - it has no Optimus support, anyway.
    One more probably unrelated thing: all indicator LEDs (except power button) and touch-button LEDs no longer light up, under 3.9.4-1 with no changes to packages in a few days.
    I'm stumped.

  • [SOLVED] no timidity service + pulse, kernel update (3.16.3-1)

    I had sound working before upon boot, but sound was failing after resume from suspend on HP dv7 laptop.  I hadn't gotten around to figuring out how to store alsa state (what I believe to be the solution to sound failing after suspend).  My install is about a week old.  I ran pacman -Syu to get into the habit of doing so.  Now I know why it is suggested to not do the updates when you don't have time to fix things that might need to be fixed.
    alsamixer is not muted, but I only see master channel as user or root - selecting the Intel PCH sound card within alsamixer allowed me to see the other channels, but speaker-test remained silent.  But I have been consistently seeing PCH Transcoder A errors on boot.  Wasn't sure what they were, since everything had worked prior to kernel update.  Investigating sound yields my hardware is Intel PCH, so these errors may be important, but I am also unsure how to access any log they might be recorded in.
    EDIT: speaker-test and timidity work in single user console mode, but not in KDE.

    Any ideas on what I should do?  Also, why did my sound break, and what should I do to prevent sound from breaking in future kernel updates?

    Since it appears that my issue is a KDE issue, not ALSA, I'm working through the troubleshooting on the Pulse wiki page here.
    automute mode is off and alsactl store was run.

    What worked to get speaker-test running in Konsole: adding -D to:

    to become

    in /usr/lib/systemd/system/timidity.service (as per: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=149339&p=2 post 29)
    Additionally, I was able to see a default audio device in KDE system settings...multimedia instead of just dummy device.  However, even after preferring the default audio device for everything (and it tests fine), Rosegarden still has no volume.  Timidity in Konsole plays audibly now too.  I am now going to reboot and see what the status is.

  • No sound after (kernel)update 64bit

    Hey I just rebooted my PC the first time after the new kernel update.
    Now sound is not working anymore at all... But the soundcard (Audigy 2 ZS) is still recognized (e.g. via alsamixer), and kmix does not give any error message. Everything seems to work fine, except the fact that there is no sound. Of course I already checked if I muted anything by mistake. Sound is working on Vista (dualboot), so the hardware is alright.
    Any hint what could be the problem?
    PS: I stressed the kernel update in the first line, because I strongly suspect it for being the cause of the problem. The other updates were not that important (samba...).
    But I would like to hear other opinions.
    Greetings, yodo
    Edit: Ok, I manually compiled and installed an older kernel (kernel26-2.6.27.8-1) and sound is working again. It was definitly the kernel's fault! The version(s) I had (have) problems with were kernel26-2.6.27.10-1 and also kernel26-2.6.27.9-1 which I tried before kernel26-2.6.27.8-1.
    Any other users with the same problem?

    Thanks! But actually rebuilding the kernel did not fix anything (for me) - at least not rebuilding kernel26-2.6.27.10-1 or kernel26-2.6.27.9-1. Sound only works after a downgrade to kernel26-2.6.27.8-1 (or below I suppose).

  • Mounting issues after kernel update (2.6.25)

    After installing the recent kernel update, mounting has gone haywire. When I put in a cd (in either of my 2 drives) it doesn't mount. In thunar, when I click on the cd drive, it displays this error:
    mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
           missing codepage or other error
           In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
           dmesg | tail  or so.
    I did dmesg | tail and I got this:
    EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
    Adding 1044216k swap on /dev/sda5.  Priority:-1 extents:1 across:1044216k
    eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1

    [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20060119 on minor 0
    UDF-fs: No VRS found
    Also, when booting a few minutes ago, it was stuck on the "checking filesystems" for a few minutes, when it usually does that step almost immediately. I also couldn't mount an iso, this is what happened:
    [root@eric-arch eric]# mount -o loop -t iso9660 /path/to/iso.iso /mnt/iso2
    mount: could not find any device /dev/loop#
    Note: I am not certain that it was caused by the kernel update, but that is the only thing I did to my machine before this started happening.
    Please help asap because I need to do schoolwork which is on a cd.

    jealma wrote:I know the solution to the /dev/loop-problem. The new 2.6.25 kernel has the loop device as a module. Please try a `modprobe loop`, that gives you a /dev/loop. I don't know whether that will be persistent after a reboot, so you may need to add "loop" to the modules-list in /etc/rc.conf.
    That worked, but I still have other issues with cd mounting, so I downgraded my kernel for now.

  • [solved] rebuild packages on kernel update

    Hi. I jave an older computer (Dell Studio 173x) with a 'Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01)' network card. So far I have only been able to make it work with the bwoadcom-wl package from the AUR (I might give the other, suggested, alternatives a go this week).
    However, in the last 2-3 months it stopped working suddenly about 3 times (yesterday was the last one). I _think_ it has to do with kernel updates, as that's what I did yesterday - I updated the kernel (plus a few other packages, but rather innocent, I guess, I update daily, and they were things like git), rebooted and wireless was not working (the card was not even listen in 'ip link show'). I eventually connected via the cable and rebuild broadcom-wl, rebooted and it worked. This does't happen for each kernel update, though, so my assumptions may be wrong or simply not each kernel update requires the rebuild. Please correct me if this is impossible and I'm talking rubbish, I would love to learn the cause of this nuisance.
    Is there a way to have certain packages rebuild with kernel updates? I haven't been using arch for too long, so maybe I am missing something obvious. Please give me some tips / links.

    Yes, check DKMS https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dy … le_Support
    There is even a broadcom-wl package in AUR https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl-dkms/

  • After last kernel update OpenGL not working (radeonsi)

    uname -a
    Linux arch 3.14.4-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue May 13 16:41:39 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    Just updated the Kernel and Steam and the games are not loading and giving me opengl errors. This didn't happen just before I updated the kernel.
    When opening Steam I get this error:
    OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause performance problems.
    For more information visit https://support.steampowered.com/kb_art … -EYZB-7457.
    When launching a game (Dota2) I get this error:
    Could not find the required OpenGL entry point 'glGetError'! Either your video card is unsupported, or your OpenGL driver needs to be updated.
    As said, this happened just after the Kernel update. I just reinstalled it and there's no error or anything.

    I'm on Nvidia hardware but I'm also suddenly getting the same error after an update so it seems likely this is related.  Per your suggestion I downgraded the kernel (and I know it worked with this version):
    uname -a
    Linux ShawkatArch 3.14.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Apr 27 11:28:44 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    but I'm getting the same error.  However my glxinfo indicates direct rendering is OK:
    glxinfo | grep direct
    direct rendering: Yes
    glxinfo32 | grep direct
    direct rendering: Yes
    Portion of Steam errors:

    Going out on a limb here, but is your /boot partition mounted when you update the Kernel? What is the output of
    uname -a
    and

    both BEFORE the installed Kernel that breaks, and AFTER installing the Kernel that breaks (and you've rebooted). If you can get that far at least. If not, can we see your pacman.log?

  • VirtualBox does not start correctly after kernel update

    Just recently I have been unable to start VirtualBox after a kernel update. That is to say it seems to be running, but displays nothing.
    The following processes are listed: VirtualBox, VBoxSVC, VBoxSVC, VBoxXPCOMPCD
    The following modules are loaded: vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp
    Yesterday, when the same thing happened, I reinstalled VirtualBox and it worked correctly again.
    I recently upgraded to systemd which has caused me some other problems, so that might have something to do with it
    Cheers

    I try to update kernel patch for my Dev server on Windows 2003 server from 133 to 185.
    This is 1st time i try to do kernel patch on windows server. I want to change the kernel to 185 by follow "How to do a Manual Kernel Upgrade of an SAP Server" - by Hemant Kumar. And other kernel upgrade notes and guide from  internet too.
    Is there anything else i should do? Update profile or anything? BTW... im not sure if i put the new kernel update on the right folder. This is because, i copy the folder \usr\sap\SID\sys\exe\uc\NTAMD64. Even if put the same thing on  \usr\sap\SID\DVEBMGS00\exe\, the same thing will still will occured.
    So now, no matter what kernel that i put on. Apps server still run but disp+work and SM51 still not reflected to the new kernel but still show kernel no 133.
    Any advice? Thanks in advance.

    Hi all,
    Thanks for the reply
    Currently i tried all the steps above. But for latest one. This is what i did.
    -I stop the apps server.
    -Copy the original kernel no 133 at \usr\sap\SID\sys\exe\uc\NTAMD64 as a backup.
    -Then overwrite the old 133 with the new one. Change their owner, security.
    -Restart apps server using the sapMMC and start saposcol services.
    I try to run the command disp+work at Drive:\usr\sap\SID\sys\exe\uc\NTAMD64. But it still show 133.
    Then i try to check on the RUN folder in C:\usr\sap\SID\sys\exe\ as what Anindya Bose said earlier. The files still not update automatically. So I bring down the apps server again. So i copy the old Run133 as a backup before i overwrite with the new Run185 executeable files. Then start the apps server again.
    I still get the kernel no 133 on disp+work command. However I notice that a few files in Drive:\usr\sap\SID\DVEBMGS00\exe\ has been update to a new 185.
    I want to confirm. I find out that in Drive:\usr\sap\SID\sys\exe\uc\NTAMD64 files like stopsap, startsap sapstart and many more files is still not update to 185. File version is still 133 even after all of those steps above. Is this the cause of this problem? Any file that i missout to download somewhere? BTW, I update this job only by using the SAPEXEDB_185-20001356.SAR files.
    Thank you.

  • SAP ECC 6.0 IDES KERNEL Update

    Dear experts,
    i have installed a SAP ECC 6.0 IDES on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 64 bits + MS SQL from the MarketPlace:
    -> http://service.sap.com/swdc
    -> Download
    -> Installations and Upgrades
    -> My Company's Application Components
    -> SAP ERP
    -> SAP ERP 6.0
    -> IDES-Version
    -> Windows Server
    -> Microsoft SQL-Server
    and in order to update my solution into EHP3, i need to update the Kernel witch is in 7.00 version.
    How and Where could i get the kernel update file?
    Is there any difference between SAP Netweaver and SAP ERP Installation?
    Thank you very much for your great help.
    Best regards,
    Pascal.
    PS: i already update the SPAM/SAINT version (number 33) and have a well configured MOPZ for confirmed files.

    Hello Pascal,
    The kernel is at a differnt location. Please go to:
    1. http://service.sap.com/swdc
    2. Download
    3. Support Packages and Patches
    4. Entry by Application Group
    5. Additional Components
    6. SAP Kernel
    Select the corresponding platform.
    You should download 2 kernel files: SAPEXE and SAPEXEDB. One is database independent, one is DB dependent. Unpack them to the kernel directory and the kernel then is upgraded.
    Best Regards,
    Joseph

  • Problems with key shortcuts after kernel update (can't shutdown wifi)

    Hi! Sorry for my poor english!
    I have 2 problems on my laptop that went out after a kernel update; the first one involves the wireless card (Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01), but I don't think it is important): when I press the key shortcut it switches off only partially, the led remains lighted and with "rfkill list all" i get that is actually only software blocked.
    The second problem is about the key shortcut to switch off the screen: even with xev it isn't recognised anymore.
    I am pretty sure the 2 problems are related; the latest kernel with they were working is 3.5.6-1, in fact if I downgrade to that version I haven't got any problem.
    I have encountered this issue with 3 models of Asus EEEPC: 1015pd (mine), 1215b and 1015cx, (the first two with AR9285, the third with AR9485).
    Thanks for the help ;-)

    Ok, so after removing catalyst-test and trying to install catalyst, I got the following error:

  • [Solved] Overheating/fan/sensors issues after kernel updates

    Hi all,
    I realise there has been a bit of correspondence on this already.  I'm after some advice for my specific situation:
    1. My laptop is an acer aspire 5315.  I has well understood overheating issues that arrise due to BIOS problems
    2. Fan control and temperature reporting worked perfectly with kernel 2.6.30, stopped working with 2.6.31 - I assume due to the well documented changes made in that release.  The temperature only seems to be read once - at boot.  sensors never reports a change after that; if the temperature is cold at boot the fan never get switched on.  Unfortunately this happens most often.
    3. I tried setting the recommended kernel option (can't relocate the post now).  It didn't help :-?
    4. I have tried upgrading the BIOS but the distribution from acer is a windows executable (won't run under freeDOS) and I do not have windows installed on this PC (not game to try under wine).
    5. I re-installed the old kernel from my pacman cache only to find that my wireless no longer works (fan works just fine though).
    I'm now totally stumped :-/
    I'd like to update my bios and go with the latest kernel but can't see a way without installing windows.
    This might be fixed in an ubuntu kernel release (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/453700) but I'd prefer not to do that switch... perhaps the same fix is coming to arch?
    I'd accept having to pin the kernel to an earlier version but neet to get the wireless working.
    help...
    edit:
    I've now managed to get the kernel backdated correctly (so that wireless works as well as the fan) by re-installing the kernel and firmware together.
    Have configured pacman to igmore future kernel updates
    If anyone has any suggestions on howto update my bios I'd be very greatful.

    Hi,
    Got exactly the same issue, after running for a while laptop justs goes off... going to try to regress kernel until issue is resolved
    BIOS update does sound a bit extreme

  • Iwconfig have no results since 2.6.24 kernel update with intel 3945

    Hello,
    Since the last update of the kernel (2.6.24) in x86 with an intel 3945ABG wireless chipset,
    I have no wireless extention in iwconfig.
    I have just l0 and eth0 (ethernet).
    what I supposed to do to have my wireless come back ?
    Is it a module to load at boot or something else ?
    Thanks

    I presume that you're using the ipw3945 or iwlwifi drivers? If so, when you updated the system, the correct newest version should have been pulled in along with the kernel update. (Mine gave me a newer ipw3945 and catalyst drivers, for example).
    Try 'pacman -S ipw3945 ipw3945d' or 'pacman -S iwlwifi' and see if it gives you your updated driver/modules.
    If you are using the non-standard 'vanilla' 'tp_plus' 'rt' or 'dkms' kernels, there might also be newer drivers floating around, otherwise it's up to you to compile them...
    Edit: Actually, according to this post the iwlwifi drivers are included in the kernel, so if you saw something like this:
    :: Starting full system upgrade...
    :: Replace iwlwifi with core/kernel26? [Y/n]
    And answered 'Y' then you already have them. A simple matter of 'modprobe iwl3945' should bring your interface back.

  • [kernel] kernel update and third party modules management

    Hi all,
            I turned to Archlinux with my new thinkpad X220 just for a few days, while I have used Ubuntu for 4 years. I had never controlled my system in such a degree, and feel happy about it.
           However, I have a question about kernel update, for I had install some modules from AUR with yaourt( e.g. tp_smapi, acpi_call). For my poor knowledge about pacman, I don't know how to handle those modules while I upgrade my kernel. I cannot remember to re-install all of them!
          I think there must be a solution that I didn't found, so I write this thread to ask for help.
          Any help would be appreciate.

    Mr.Elendig wrote:You can use some silly wrapper around pacman that rebuilds them when there is a kernel update. I'm sure someone has written one already.
    Thank you, Mr.Elendig. Do you mean some kind of frontend such as yaourt?
    Or some kind of hooks like this:
    aur/mkinitcpio-vbox 2.0-3 (Out of Date) (29)
        VirtualBox hook for mkinitcpio that rebuilds kernel modules on next reboot
    Using the key words you provided, I searched " kernel upgrade module rebuild " and found that gentoo offically provide a tool called  "module-rebuild" to reinstall external modules. Maybe it's because gentoo always compile source code? But no other results.
    However, now I found what I need to do is just to build the modules listed in the /etc/rc.conf, and that is acceptable. Maybe after a few weeks of study, I can find out my way to solve this problem.
    And thanks for your reply.
