Kernel Upgrade before EHP?

Hi folks,
we want to upgrade an ERP6 EHP5 (Kernel 7.21 EXT) to ERP6 EHP7 (Kernel 7.41). Should we do the Kernel Upgrade before the EHP upgrade or is this irrelevant for the upgrade process?
is there a recommendation?
Kind regards,
Tobias Prein

Hello,
Please use SUM tool to perform the upgrade.
Are you generating an XML file for the same?
If not I would recommend you to generate it.
The XML file ensure all the packages are included in addition to the dependencies.
And the Kernel Switch will also happen automatically.
You might have to setup SSFS connectivity as well.
Let me know in case of any clarifications required.
Thanks

  • KERNEL UPGRADE 159 please help me

    hi gurus
ı havent doing kernel upgrade before ?
could anyone explain me kernel upgrade where can ı download latest kernl patch
    please help me...

    Hi,
    Follow below process.
    1. Download the .CAR files from SAPNet .
    2. Log on to www.service.sap.com/patches .
    3. On the screen click on download support packages & patches.
    4. Download all the files from Database Independent & your database node and upload the same to the server where the patches have to be applied.
    Download below files
    SAPEXE---.SAR   -DATABADE INDEPENDENT
    SAPEXEDB---.SAR  -for your specific database
    5. Log on to the server and take a backup of existing Run directory.
    6. Stop SAP.
    7. Stop SAPOSCOL
    8. Go to Usr\sap\sid\sys\exe\run through Command prompt and UNCAR the above .CAR Files with the command car u2013xvf< path where the .CAR files are located> < .CAR file name> replacing the old Executables..
    9.Restart the Server.
    10.SAP.
    11.Check for Transactions SM21, SAPDBA check (OS Level) and DB13, ST22, ST11 (dev_ms, dev_disp) .
Kernel Upgrade Procedure with Unix as Operating system.
Check whether the Unix is 32 bit or 64 bit operating system and download the relevant kernel from the Service Marketplace.
Download the Database depenedent and Database independent packages.
Or Order a CD containing patches from Service Market Place.
    A) Prior to importing the new R/3 kernel from the CD/Downloaded files proceed as follows:
    1. When you upgrade to the new kernel, problem with the statistics collector might occur. Therefore, you need to delete the stat file. To prevent data loss, start the statistics collector manually (Transaction SE38, report RSSTAT83). In Transaction ST03 or ST03N, check that the statistics are updated for all active instances in the system.
    2. Stop the SAP System (stopping the database is not required).
    3. Stop saposcol.
    $cd /usr/sap/<SAPSID>/SYS/exe/run
    ./saposcol -k
    $rm saposcol
    B) Extract the new R/3 kernel (Binary patches) from CD/Download from Service Marketplace:
    1. Branch to directory /sapmnt/<SAPSID>/exe.
    2. Back up the old R/3 kernel with the following commands:
    $mkdir oldkernel
    $cp -p * oldkernel
    $su - root
    $chown <sapsid>adm /sapmnt/<SAPSID>/exe/*
    $exit
The directory oldkernel will be deleted during the next regular upgrade.
    C) Unpack CAR/SAR files in a folder and Copy them to following directory /usr/sap/<SAPSID>/SYS/exe/run.
Logon as user <sapsid>adm and execute the following commands:
    $su - root
    $cd /sapmnt/<SAPSID>/exe
    $ sapcar u2013xvf *.CAR
    $exit
    D) Restart the System in following order
    1. Start saposcol
    cd /usr/sap/<SAPSID>/SYS/exe/run
    ./saposcol u2013l
    2. Start Database
    3.Start the SAP System.
    Read note-19466 for more info.

  • [solved] after kernel upgrade screen flickering in gdm

    Hi,
after the recent kernel-upgrade to 4.0.1-1-ARCH i have an ugly behavior. The bottom half of my screen flickers while on gdm. After login to gnome everything is normal and I have no problems. But in gdm the screen is flickering which is really annoying. I never had this behavior before. My laptop has such an hybrid graphics stack with intel and ati. Here are some logfiles but I cant find anything suspicious. Has anyone any idea what could be the cause of this behavior or which logfile to log into?
    greetings

It happens to me as well but in xfce4 or openbox rather than on a display manager because I start X from `~/.bash_profile` upon login on tty1. If I logout and login again the problem goes away until I restart the system again.
EDIT: Upgrading to linux 4.0.5-1 did not solve the issue.

  • "disp+work" process in not getting started after kernel upgradation

    Hello Experts,
    Good day…..,
I am new to SAP. I installed SAP ECC6 EHP4 with default kernel version 701 and it was working fine.
I have upgraded kernel version from 701 to 741, but the “disp+work” process is not getting started after kernel upgrade.
    I have posted “dev_W0” log &
“disp+work” command result obtained in CMD prompt of respective server.
Please help me out in this. Thanks all in advance.

For this issue you need to set up SSFS.
1639578 - SSFS as password storage for primary database connect
I am new to SAP. I installed SAP ECC6 EHP4 with default kernel version 701 and it was working fine.
I have upgraded kernel version from 701 to 741
Are you sure kernel 741 is compatible with an EHP 4 system ?

  • Kernel upgrade having ABAP+JAVA instance

    Hi team,
Can you provide the procedure how to kernel upgrade for our windows system having ABAP+JAVA instance releae version 700.
Provide the links, your replies are very helpful.
    Regards
    Bhaskar

    Hi Bhaskar,
You can use JSPM too in this case. Otherwise if you want to do it the old fashioned way:
    > Stop SAP, Database, Saprouter, listeners and all the
    related services.
    > The location of the kernel is /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run
    > Take a backup of the files in this location and take a
print out of the ls -ltr (This is needed to give the new files the
    correct permissions)
    > Overwrite all the new files to the kernel location. The
purpose is to retain the old files for which the new version is not
    available.
    > The permissions of the file need to be changed as they
    were before.
    > Restart all the processes. The kernel upgrade is
    now done. System
    > status will give the newer version of the kernel.>
    >
    disp+work
    Will give the
    new Kernel version.

  • [SOLVED] Laptop freezes at startup after kernel upgrade to 3.13.6

Some days ago I got a new Dell Sputnik 3 Laptop and installed Arch Linux with UEFI Boot and gummiboot as bootloader. The installation was successful.
However two days ago there was an upgrade for the Linux Kernel from 3.13.5 to 3.13.6. When I restarted the Laptop after the upgrade of the kernel the Laptop freezed directly after pushing the power button (never got ahead of the initial DELL logo).
I ran the DELL hardware diagnostics to identify a possible damage of the SSD but everything was ok. Than I booted into a live system ad mounted the root partition and there was no problem work on it. Additionally I change the value of timeout in gummiboots loader.conf (it was commented out before). Since than I got the gummiboot boot menu at least. So narrowing down, I think something happened during the kernel upgrade. Unfortunately I have no clue what could it be since I am convinced that at the installation process some days before I did everything like it was described at the beginners guide so automatic gummiboot update had to be possible.
The drive is partitioned in the live system looks like this (look at sda):
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 512M 0 part /boot
    └─sda2 8:2 0 235G 0 part /
    fstab like this:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/sda2
    UUID=3f216fdb-f4c6-459a-856f-6f246d7a5bff / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=0F8F-2A3B /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
    # swap
    /swapfile none swap defaults 0 0
I have and arch.conf in gummiboot looking like this:
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=/dev/sda2 rw
and the loader.conf of gumiboot looking like this:
    timeout 5
    default 56cccedc29f1418ab2d8f1762ea09471-*
Now, I don't know anymore how to proceed to identify the problem and hopefully solve it

looks like this issue might be the same:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=172961&p=1
If I find time I might try using an alternative to gummiboot to see if this works.
Update: There also seems to be a reopened bug report on this https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33745

  • KERNEL upgrade problem.

    Dear Experts,
Very imp issue.  please find time to read and gothrough this.
recently i had updated KERNEL for ECC 6.0 SR2.
after updaing the kerenl files, i'm not able to see the updated patch level
    in system status.
Same old patch level is displayed.
1 *what could be the problem?
    D:\usr\sap\DEV\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64
this is the path, first i had pasted (copy new and paste in tht kerenl Dir).
it had asked for u want to replace (while pasting) i clicked Yes to all.
so, it got replaced with new extracted files.
and when i started the MMC SAP is not starting UP.
then when i had serached in USR dir, i found another Dir with kerenl fiels for
01 instance (java instance defaultly loaded in ECC 6.0 SR2).
so, i had replaced kerenl files , simply by pasting in to this second path.
    D:\usr\sap\DEV\SCS01\exe
then i had started SAP MMC, after a few min it was started and i'm able to log in
    to SAP.
But, the problem is I'm not able to see the Upgraded value in System status.
What could be the problem ?
    2 *where to check ?
I request you people to give your valuable inputs for
3 *procedure to be follwed in upgrading SAP KERNEL?
4 *what kind of fiels to be downloaded from market place?
i.e Kernel part 1 , kerenl part 2 and other kerenl components in both places
where you can download those kerenl parts.
5 *if any problem occurs in kerenl upgrading how to revert back ?
6 *what kind of precautions to be taken before updating Kerenl ?
7 *system restart is mandatory or not ?
if any extra points to be discussed please let me know that.
    Thanking you all in anticipation.
    Best regards,
    by
    Raghav.

    Hi,
did you stop and restart the system for changing the kernel ?
You can find latest kernel from http://service.sap.com/swdc
Choose your platform and product combination. More detailed info can be found in OSS note: 19466
    http://service.sap.com/~form/handler?_APP=01100107900000000342&_EVENT=REDIR&_NNUM=0000019466&nlang=E
and you need to stop SAP before you can change the kernel and after kernel upgrade you restart the system.
For a backup purpose, before changing the kernel. please make a copy of your old kernel directory...
    Cheers !!
    Satya.
PS: pls reward points if the answer was helpful...Thx.

  • Kernel upgrade breaks wifi

I tried a kernel upgrade from linux-3.0.7-1 to the latest 3.2 kernel but I have an odd issue. I am using wifi on my laptop which works fine but after two/three minutes just stops working. I cannot ping my gateway anymore, but the link still seems to be up.
Does anyone know what I can do to troubleshoot this? For example, where are the logs which could give me pointers? How do I figure out what "driver" my card is using?
Has anyone had this issue before? I am using an Aspire AS3810TG-734G32n
    Thanks!

ajaxas wrote:Both of you should chek what wireless driver is in use: if it's ath9k, then read this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=134374
The patches for the bug are already in 3.3-rc4 and will be in 3.2.7.
Lol, yes, I've come across that post. (and several others). Unfortunately, I'm using the rt2800pci driver. I would have to know if I was to unload &reload reload my driver.
No ath9k solution works for me. ...I did try, though.
I am already using 3.2.7 and as I said, it did get better for me but is still buggy. However, my issue (as described) is clearly a bug in the code and probably not something that cannot easily be toubleshooted on the forums. I avoided raising a bug for my particular issue before 3.2.7 because driver related wifi bugs were already being dealt with and thusfare no one else has reproduced my symptoms. If it's been fully solved for ath9k in 3.2.7 but my problem persists, than I may need to. ...it may be a related but different problem.

  • Kernel Upgrade Impact on ABAP perspective ?

We are planning for Kernel upgrade. I like to know what kind of impact on ABAP point of view.
My question is after the upgrade what are things i may needs to check from abaper perspective ?
I don't know is right to ask this question in abap general forum. may be our abap friends have something to share.
    a®s
    Any Info ?

@gautam : i've read that before kernel upgrade we have to use "SGEN" transaction to generate objects with available load and then after kernel upgrade is done we have to regenerate objects from last generation..
can you please explain why do we need to do this...
as per my understanding it has got to do something with ABAP consistency....
but why excatly this is done..can anyone tell..

  • ECC6 Upgrade and EHP 4 because of a CRM7 in the landscape?

    Hi,
I am in the way to upgrade my SAP 4.6c system to ECC6.
In my overall landscape, I have a CRM 7 installed.
Do you believe I need to perform a simple ECC6 upgrade or a ECC6 upgrade including EHP4 SR1?
In other words, is it mandatory to go through the Upgrade + EhP4 because I have a CRM 7 around?
    Thank you,
    Chris

    Hi,
according to my view upgrade from SAP 4.6c to ERP 6.0 EHP4 is easy because you can save your time in all preparation task that you to carry before starting upgrade as EHP upgrade itself takes time for preaprtion task....
also, you can reduce the downtime of your production environment if you will directly go to ERP EHP4..
As EHP4 takes significant downtime to upgrade the system ( also depends on hardware and database size)...
Also, you can reduce probablity of error free upgrade by carrying out one upgrade instead of carrrying out 2 upgrade (from SAP 4.6c to ERP6.0 then ERP6.0 to EHP4)...
    Hope it clears to you...
    Thanks
    Sunny

  • System less responsive after udev/kernel upgrade

Yeah, another udev/kernel upgrade question.  After upgrading udev and the kernel yesterday my terminal is less responsive.  For example, scrolling is slow and jerky, and uses an inordanite amount of cpu.  ls /usr/bin will cause the cpu usage to spike ~70% which is much higher than normal.  I can cause the cpu to go to 100%  by scrolling quickly in vim.  I do not see this in firefox, however.  Scrolling there is responsive and does not use any additional cpu beyond what it took before the update.
I really don't know where to start to troubleshoot this - the only thing I have noticed is that the speedstep-centrino module is not loading any longer.
    pmorris@arch:~ $ sudo modprobe speedstep-centrino
FATAL: Error inserting speedstep_centrino (/lib/modules/2.6.15-ARCH/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-centrino.ko): Device or resource busy
This is on an ibm thinkpad T40p.  I am still getting cpu scaling, but the system is generally less responsive.  It may be taking longer to scale up the cpu frequency on demand.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

tpowa wrote:perhaps a bug in how udev loads the cpufreq modules. can you tell me which modules you would need? then just blacklist the modules you don't need...
Thanks, this worked.  Prior to the upgrade I was using the speedstep-centrino module, and loading it in the modules array in /etc/rc.conf.  After the upgrade the acpi-cpufreq module was being autoloaded at boot prior to my trying to load the speedstep-centrino module, hence the "device or resource busy" failure when I tried to load the speedstep module.  After blacklisting all modules listed in /lib/modules/2.6.15-ARCH/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq except the speedstep-centrino, things are working fine.  The correct module is loaded at boot time.
Is there a cleaner method to achieve this other than blacklisting all unwanted modules?

any idea on how to fix this?
    many thanks!

    same problem here.
I 've edited the PKGBUILD git repo with dkao's repo he fixed the build with this commit:
    https://github.com/dkao/acpi_call/commi … dccd49caef
    Now the module builds, but...
I think the pkgbuild in a bad shape, it isn't installing the kernel module.
I've tried a manual insmod and depmod -a with no luck.
Did something has changed with the module installation procedure using kmod? modules has to be signed or gz compressed?
    EDIT:
    well I've succeeded.
    1) modify git repo to dkao's in git url
    2) go to /tmp/yaourt-tmp-user/aur-acpi_call-git/src/acpi_call-build (before merging the package)
    3) make install
    4) depmod -a
    5) turn_off_gpu.sh

  • Wpa_supplicant: scan_ssid=1 needed only after 2.6.29 kernel upgrade?

Like many others, I ran into wireless networking issues after the upgrade to kernel 2.6.29. Specifically, I use iwl3945 and experienced errors when attempting to connect to WPA-encrypted networks with hidden SSIDs via my usual netcfg profiles.
As described here, I finally found a solution to my problem. Like SubGothius in this thread, I found that that "magic" fix was to ensure that the network parameter scan_ssid=1 was used when attempting to connect to my network. Because the temporary wpa_supplicant config created by netcfg does not include this parameter, I created a small patch (see first thread referenced above) to use that parameter whenever the SCAN option is not enabled for a network profile.
As I said, I have fixed the error; however, now I am (extremely) curious. Here is a rundown of what I have witnessed:
    - Before the kernel upgrade (2.6.29), I was able to connect to WPA-encrypted networks with hidden SSIDs successfully. (I use two different such networks.)
    - After the kernel upgrade, I was unable to connect to these networks. netcfg returned "Network unavailable" errors (for at least one of the two networks I tried).
    - I was able to connect manually (i.e., with ifconfig, iwlconfig, and wpa_supplicant); however, doing so required that I add the scan_ssid=1 parameter to my configuration for the network.
    - I looked into the issue, and installed crda (as many users recommend). (I can't recall for sure, but I think that this led to netcfg changing to an "Unable to connect"-type error.)
    - Following the advice in this thread, I created a "wpa-config" netcfg profile that did work; however, I wanted to use my normal profiles.
    - After connecting with my wpa-config profile and then disconnecting, I could connect with my normal profile once (i.e., after disconnecting, I could no longer reconnect with my normal profile unless I again connected with the wpa-config profile and disconnected).
    - I looked through the netcfg scripts and found that it generates a temporary config file for wpa_supplicant (for me, /tmp/wpa.wlan0) using wpa_passphrase, thus not including any value at all for scan_ssid.
    - I made some modifications to the netcfg scripts, with the result being a netcfg that will include scan_ssid=1 in certain situations (see above). Using this modified netcfg, I can connect to the network.
Does anyone know why I was able to use netcfg successfully before the upgrade (i.e., without it needing scan_ssid=1 set)? I've seen (here) that others using iwl3945 have resolved the issue simply by installing and configuring crda, and it appears that (in that one example, at least), the solution worked for a network profile using SECURITY="wpa" (rather than "wpa-config").
If there's a more proper solution to my problem, please post it; otherwise, I'd just like to know why this need for scan_ssid=1 arose only after the kernel upgrade (and does not seem to affect all iwl3945 users).
    Thanks!
