Kernel26 package now doesn't boot [FIXED!]

I grabbed the latest kernel pkg. didn't do lilo -v
and now it doesn't boot at all! [stop at the beggining of ..........]
well shouldnt at least boot the last one? [or automatically do lilo -v]
plz help me now
thanks

after a lot of testing and luck I was able to boot arch again [update lilo that is]
what did I do: [i did all that because lilo refuses either to write the map file, or protests about /dev/hda or /dev/discs/disc0/disc {depending if it was Slack or Arch}]
I booted with SlackWare 9.1 Rescue/Install CD {which has vfat}
and which plays without devfs [so /dev/hdb8 was my root arch]
I mounted  my arch root
mount -t reiserfs /dev/hdb8 /tmp
I change the /tmp/etc/lilo.conf to:
boot=/dev/hda
vga=792
default=windows
timeout=300
lba32
prompt
image=/tmp/boot/vmlinuz26 # important change
label=arch
root=/dev/hdb8
read-only
other=/dev/hda1
label=windows
/boot [the slackware's cd's one] links to /mnt/boot so I did
mkdir /mnt/boot
and then tried to play with lilo a bit
. /tmp/sbin/lilo -C /tmp/etc/lilo.conf -m /tmp/boot/map -M /dev/hda mbr -v
with the above command I have a boot.0300
in /mnt/boot directory
so in the end I just did
cp /mnt/boot/boot.0300 /tmp/boot/
which overwrote the BAD AND UGLY AND OLD [and at last] boot.0300 with the new one [that containted info about the new kernel]
I prayed to Buddha a bit, and then reboot. I there chose arch and OMFG! i was able to boot it
a) I love LILO
b) I love Slackware
c) I love Arch [though I sumbitted some bug reports about the Rescue CD]
mostly I love the fact that I lost some hours do make it work, but now it works as before. On the other hand, I always remember myself trying for days to fix the windows, and then give up [or if i could hack it in a way that would work, then it would be giving me Blue Screens [now dark blue in win2k/xp] of DEATH]
so I must say I love the Penguin
yeahhhhhhhhh
thanks to everyone that helped.
I hope the pkger of kernel would soon add the WARNING [sumbitted bug for that too] and if anyone forgets it or wants to play [like me] then I hope for him that he reads this post, and make it work [i could work with Arch's Live CD too, not sure]
that's all baby.
another success story yeahhhhhhhhh!! :$

  • MBP17 shut down by itself, now doesn't boot up, black screen - what now?

    I was processing some photos in PS CS3 and my macbookpro 17" (2006 model - not sure exactly what version of 10.4 I have - its gotten every auto update that Apple sends me, No Leopard though) and it shut down on its own. It was plugged in at the time.
    I tried to power it back on after 10 minutes and the light on the lid release would come on and then leave. So I waited more. Finally, it powered up and the light would come on, but its dim. The screen stays black. Close lid and light gets brighter. I can hear fans running and the sound of it starting up but its just a couple clicks (sounds like its coming from behind the power button).
    I've tried every Apple key combo I've come across and tried resetting NVRAM and PMU. Still nothing. Battery has all 5 lights green.
    I've read something about this "Safe Sleep" mode. Could that be the issue?
    Otherwise, how can I get to this Single User or Verbose mode if the screen stays black? Or am I pretty screwed here?
    Any help is greatly appreciated in advance! Thank you.

    Unable to put a disc in. Had a friend who tried to connect by firewire with his computer and do some diagnostics, but he was unable to connect to it.
    I press the power button and screen stays black. I hear fans going and the laptop gets warm like usual. Latch light turns on, but I hear no processor noise/clicking like you hear when you normally start up a Mac. It just sits there with a black screen. I'm unable to start up in single user or verbose. Again, I've tried resetting every possible thing to reset and powering up using every single keystroke I've come across. Unable to do anything but press the power button on & off.
    This is not a ongoing, random issue. It just shut down on its own and now won't boot up. This is the one and only issue i've had with this laptop. Its treated me well until now.
    I've got an ext enclosure ordered and on the way to check if I can at least access the HD in the meantime. Right now I'm going to let it run down on battery power to see if that will trigger something.
    Has anyone seen/heard of similar situations/occurances?

  • Lenovo Yoga 11 failed during the factory re-install of windows...now doesn't boot at all

    Hi guys,  thanks for providing this forum !!
    Whilst preparing my Yoga 11 for a clean and for sale, I decided that it was a good idea to clean the PC by doing a complete 'factory settings' re-install of the Windows 8 RT software.   I started this process just before bed, and the message that said this would take several hours, so I figured it would be finished by morning.
    I was met this morning with the PC in a crashed state.  It was non-respondant and just sat on the Lenovo boot screen, with no activity to the progress.
    I pressed the on off button for 10 seconds and hard booted the machine.   This now attempts to boot, although has obviously crashed part way during the windows re-install process.   The message I get on screen now states
    'The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error.  WIndows installation cannot proceed.  To install windows click 'OK' to restart the computer, and then restart the installation'
    I can no longer boot to windows, and I just receive the message above.
    I do not have an install disc...I assume the files are on a recovery partition.   Is there a boot / recovery / safe mode menu for the Yoga, that will allow me to recover this Yoga to it's factory state ??
    Kind Regards
    smiley.

Even tried booting from external usb CD drive after changing boot sequence but no luck. Model is M55-S3292. Any idea what else I could try, appreciate suggestions.

  • 10.6.4 update failed. Now doesn't boot up

    Hi
    I have a serious problem. Updated to 10.6.4 and at the end of the installation I got "an error has occurred" message. After that I rebooted and a after a while it just turns off. Before the update I had no issues at all.
    Tried the disk tool and it found both permission errors and errors on the disk but isn't able to repair it. What should I do?
    Thanks
    Fredrik

    I work on a team supporting about 600+ Mac laptops. We're advising users to not upgrade.
    Installation of 10.6.4 via the Software Update is resulting in machines not booting up afterward for many of our users who tried to update. A verbose boot returns the message "Waiting for DSMOS" along with a stuck boot process.
    A 2-hour call with the Apple resulted in nothing helpful (ie - they had no idea what happened, why it happened, or how to solve it). We've had to do clean installs for those users.
    We've not yet encountered problems installing from the ComboUpdate.
    Edit: This has happened on a range of models of 15" and 17", including the new i5 and i7.

  • Tecra S1 doesn't boot and hangs at (boot) splash screen

    Tecra S1 Model PT831E-107EQ-GR
    Problems started a month ago. It randomly didn't booted. After some power off/on tries it finally booted and worked properly. Because it happened more often I've bought a new hard drive (Toshiba 40 GB). I've had Acronis True Image and planned to make a disk clone to the new drive. The problem is that a notebook now doesn't boot anymore so I cannot boot it from A CD nor hard drive. It stops at "In Touch..." logo with "Press [F12] for the boot device selection menu" text and doesn't react any key. I tried to boot with no CD, no hard drive - the same. I also connected internal HD using ATA-To-USB adapter - the same. Does it mean that's not a disk problem but motherboard or other components? Is it possible to enter BIOS before boot selection screen?
    Regards,
    Jacek

    Problem solved. There was a broken PCB under the CPU socket. I've found that pressing with my finger and holding CPU while booting allowed to startup the system while releasing the finger caused system hanging and its total crash. Our local service tried to repair it but with no success. Finally two days ago we've found a working motherboard (a used one) for about 200 USD and now I'm waiting for installing it in the laptop. Th regular price for a new one (about 400 Euro) is too much, but 200 USD is OK. I do like the laptop because of its ports (LPT, RS232). It's used for programming and controlling some older devices. Newer laptops have no LPTs nor RS232s and it's not easy to find a working USB adapter because the software we're using is even from DOS times and has hard-coded IRQs for those ports.
    Anyway, I hope it'll back from the service fresh and new, and of course working ;)
    Thank you for your tips.
    Regards,
    Jacek

    I erased my windows partition using disk utility then realized I should have used boot camp, because now I can't resize the original partition and seem to be stuck with a ghost unusable space. Boot Camp now doesn't give me the option to install or remove windows partition.

    Hi, Ralph,
    The problem is that I did erase the partition, using disk utility, but I can't go back to my original disk size pre-partition, as disk utility won't let me do it and gives the message "Couldn’t modify partition map because file system verification failed." When I try to use Boot Camp Assistant it won't let me select the third option to remove windows.

    It sounds to me like Final Cut Express is what you really need to learn. I learned it by buying a book that included a DVD of examples to use as you go through the book. It will only take a couple of hours to figure out how to do most of what you need to know. Its the last 20% that will take the longest to learn, mostly because its the stuff you'll use the least.
    The book I used was written by Tom Wolsky. It was for version 2 of the program. I don't know if its been updated. Take a look in the Final Cut Express forum. Ask the forum for recommendations. You'll probably get a response from Tom Wolsky himself since he's a regular on that forum.
    I've since upgraded to Final Cut Studio. I occasionally still use iMovieHD because its easier for some tasks but not very flexible. For example, the themes in iMovie are easy to use but it would be near impossible to recreate them in Final Cut Express. So I sometimes just populate the themes in iMovie and export them to Final Cut to add to a larger project.
    There are a couple of potential stumbling blocks in learning Final Cut, one of them being media handles. Once you figure out those, you'll be on your way...

  • My Macbook Pro (early 2008) won't boot, then booted, now won't boot again.

    Hey all,
    Summary:
    My GF's Macbook Pro (Early 2008, non-unibody I believe) "died" earlier this year without notice or a cause for why, then it worked months later, then it didn't again.
    Symptoms:
    It stopped booting, with the only signs of life are:
    The annoying boot sound that you hear right-away, like a winding sound. "Weeeeah woooo"
    A fan turns on immediately after the sound.
    The front light (on the open button) is solid.
    The battery will light up and show how much juice is left.
    The only thing to do from here is to hold down the power for 10 seconds.
    Don't worry, my story gets more interesting...
    Now, I had another computer and my GF didn't need her macbook seriously for a while, so I didn't research the problem or how to fix it, until last week.  Perusing the various help forums and communities, I came across the reset SMC suggestion, so I decided to try a few things on Apple's SMC reset page.
    I tried a couple things, including taking the battery out, and LOW AND BEHOLD: IT CAME ON, like nothing happened!  The screen was fine, the performance was fine, it updated (to the new Safari and iTunes, as an example) fine, and it restarted fine multiple times.  One of the main reasons I wanted to get it working was to save some family pictures we had saved, so I started uploading the images to an image cloud site. I'm sending them at full-res so it takes a while and I go to sleep around 2 am so I'm not too late into the office in the morn.  When I wake up, I go to check the image upload progress and the laptop is Off. I figure it just went into standby after finishing, so I hit the power button...
    And it doesn't boot again.  It's back to the same issue as before. I try doing what I did last time, then resetting the SMC, but nothing has worked this time.
    Any ideas? It's out of warranty of course, which is why I'm here.
    Thanks in advance!

    Since no one else is answering, I’ll jump in.
    Your story is interesting indeed.  I’m not sure I can help you fix the Mac but it sounds like there is a reasonable chance of recovering the data.
    I assume it came with installation disks.  Will it boot from them?  If so run Disk Utility from there and try to repair the system disk.
    For the hardware problems on your Mac it is time to take it to Genius Bar at an Apple store for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs.
    Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
    It could be your disk failing but it sounds more like flakey electronics in the system.  Let’s assume is is the system board until a Genius tells you otherwise.  If so, you can simply put the working system disk in an external enclosure, mount that on your other Mac and copy the data.  Here is a source for the inexpensive hardware you would need:
    Toolkit: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TOOLKITMHD/
    SATA enclosure: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2W/
    There are multiple directions to go from here.  Let me know what happens when you try theses first options.

  • System doesn't boot kernel26beyond

    Since a week or so, my system doesn't boot, unless I press <enter> and the power button a few times during the process.
    Once it has booted, everything works fine, but it is highly annoying nevertheless.
    it seems to have something to do with loading my hardware.

    I am using mkinitcpio already: /boot/grub/menu.lst:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd0,2)
    kernel /vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/hda4 ro
    initrd /kernel26beyond.img
    my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
    MODULES=""
    BINARIES=""
    FILES=""
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide filesystems"
    I tried removing scsi and sata, since my root is on an ide disk. But the problem persists.
    also recreating an image using mkinitcpio or reinstalling the kernel26beyond package using pacman doesn't help.
    Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how this problem might be resolved.
    It seems like a trivial issue since the systems basically works fine otherwise. However, I can't figure it out by myself, I have tried for a week.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm not sure if this will help you, but I suddenly was having a lot of trouble booting. My system would just freeze with a blinking cursor. I thought it had something to do with my floppy drive because if I changed the boot priority in my bios to boot from the hard disk 1st, the system would boot but would hang for a very long time in areas, and as long as 5 minutes loading uevents. I suspected this was a udev problem.
    I issued a few commands to reset udev, thinking maybe recent updates didn't take effect, which did the trick...
    # udevtrigger
    # udevcontrol reload_rules
    After that, everything is back to normal. I'm still learning about udev and I'm still fuzzy about a lot of the techy stuff.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    That link is for the flasher tool, you'll need that to repair the device..
    Here are the steps.. you'll need to follow them pretty accurately:
    turn phone off
    remove battery
    put battery back in
    plug USB cable into computer
    Press and hold down the 'u' button on the keyboard.. don't let it go
    plug USB cable into phone
    wait until the Nokia logo appears, a little USB icon should appear in the top right corner of the screen. the backlight MAY NOT turn on at all
    release the 'u' button
    run the flasher tool: flasher-3.5 --enable-rd-mode
    The flasher prog should run for a moment then finish. If it DOES NOT and sits waiting for suitable device, STOP.. this is bad..
    Ok, if all that went well, now for the repair bit
    unplug the USB from the phone
    The phone will power off or reboot
    If the phone turned off, turn it on with the power button
    let the phone boot up.. it may take some time.. some reports say you might need to enter the date/time again..
    If it doesn't boot STOP.. something has gone bad..
    Ok, if the phone booted ok, finish off
    Turn the phone off with the power button
    remove battery
    reinsert battery

  • No modules found in kernel26 package compiled via ABS

    Hi,
    I have been experiencing problems building kernels recently.  I've used ABS and AUR pkgbuilds to build kernels since 2.6.30, mostly to enable the proper USB scheduler for my hub and to try outside kernel patches, see kernel26-ck.  However, since the release of 2.6.35.2, more likely a mere coincidence, I've been compiling small kernels (~4MB) from the default .configs without any modifcations to the PKGBUILDs or the config files.  Looking at the compiled packages, I noticed the omission of the kernel modules that are normally located in /lib/modules/[kernelname]/kernel.  The missing kernel modules obviously causes my machine to be unable to boot (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 15#p872215).  My makepkg.conf is below.  Any explanation on what is going on?  Thanks

    Ran linpack and noticed that my CPU temp peaked at 74C, well below the critical threshold of 100C (according to intel).  Usually, my CPU runs at arounr 48-55C unless I am doing some CPU-intensive task.  When that happens, it will run up to the upper 70s.

  • Downloaded applications in my iPad2 now doesn't work

    All my downloaded applications in my iPad2 now doesn't work, can somebody tell me what went wrong?

    Is there any activity you have done on the iPad recently that is out of the ordinary? Or even an update?
    Check to see if any apps have updates that fix the problem.
    First, I would recommend doing a reset. No data will be lost. Hold the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logo appears.
    The next step (if not fixed) is to restore in iTunes. First try restoring from a backup, then you may have to set up as a new iPad if that doesn't work.

  • Mac Book Pro doesn't boot (twice; after updating) and slow performance before these incidents

    Hi,
    Maybe someone can help me resolving a (re) boot issue with my Mac Book Pro. Last few weeks I experienced a tremendous drop in performance (start-up as well as handling and using applications).
    Yesterday I downloaded and installed  an app to clean stuff from the mac, such as binaries that aren't used, cache files, etc. It resulted in substantial better performance. Than, I used the updater on this application to update. This morning, the Mac wouldn't boot. After several attempts I used the old DVD with Mac OS X to re-install and boot. That worked.
    Following this approach, I received two messages (that HP apps weren't secured or something and therefor disabled). Than I updated the Mac OS X and later this evening it asked me if I wanted to install some (4) other updates as well (don't know what updates these were). So I updated but now I am back at square one: My Mac doesn't boot. I do get the grey starting screen, but now even the 'apple' logo is missing.
    Anyone else experiencing these problems and have any clues on how to fix it? By the way, I also tried to alter permissions on all files on the main hard drives (to ensure that I do not always have to sign off on updates and or changes of applications). Would that have caused problems?

    You seem to have a lot going on here, so it's hard to know what's wrong. You likely had some underlying problems before doing the Software Update.
    Here's a link that might help with the grey screen problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    Which app did you download?
    If you can get booted up, check in the System Profiler to see that all of your RAM is recognized--if not, you may need to reseat one or both sticks.
    If you can boot from your install disc, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test to check for hardware problems. Freezing can be caused by a dying hard drive, which can also tend to corrupt software.
    While booted from the install disc, navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot disk. You can do this 2 or 3 times even if it says no problems found.
    While in Disk Utility, check to see that the SMART status of your hard drive is verified. If not, you will need to replace the drive.
    It probably wouldn't hurt to reinstall the OS.
    Do you have a good, up to date backup? If not, it would be a good idea to make one as soon as you can, just to be on the safe side.
    Have you tried a Safe Boot?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455

    These are just a few ideas to get you started. Post back if you have more questions.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook pro kernel panic, now won't boot. Am I doomed?

    My MacBook Pro 15" (bought in Jan 2012) just had a kernel panic and now won't boot up.. Am I doomed?

    No, it doesn't necessarily mean the hard drive is toast. You can start by doing the following:
    Boot into Safe Mode then do this:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion
    Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    If the drive is OK and you can repair permissions, then see if the computer will boot up normally. If it doesn't boot up normally then reinstall OS X:
    Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
