Kernel26tp_plus on X61- madwifi problems

I had been running the stock kernel with no real problems, wireless or otherwise, on a new lenovo thinkpad x61.
Then, recently tried kernel26tp_plus package from the AUR to try to get suspend to work.  Everything seems to work except that I've now lost my wireless (the ath_hal & ath_pci modules aren't found).  Actually haven't tried suspending yet -soon as I booted the new kenel realized that I had no wireless.
Tried installing the madwifi-aircrack package for think pads but it fails to build.
Haven't really had time to try much else, and since I'm pretty inexperienced with running anything other than the stock kernel, I thought I'd see if anybody could give me any general pointers.  If this short description isn't enough, I can post whatever further info would be helpful.
Thanks...

Thank you both for your replies.   I'll try using using pm-utils and the stock kernel.  I tried to go the tuxonice route pretty much arbitrarily.
If anybody comes across this post and maybe had a similar experience or other ideas, I'd like to hear it.
For the record, I did try
- the madwifi-aircrack-tp_plus package
- modifying the PKGBUILD and recompiling
neither of which worked for me - but at this point can't remember exactly what went wrong or where....
Thanks again.

  • X61 wireless problem

Hi, I bought a "new" x61 and I have some problems with the wireless pci card. In the first PCI slot isn't even seen from the system (both linux and windows xp), I tried to change it to the second PCI slot and finally the system finds and install it but windows keep giving me "This device cannot turn on (Code 10)" and Linux "The device is hard switched off". The front switch is turned on and the wireless card is enabled in the BIOS, I even tried using the wireless card from another x61 which i know it works but nothing change. Wireless card is the original Intel 4965ag and I tried both with the last official bios 2.22 and with the one from this forum with sata2 and whitelist removed.
I'm starting to think that the problem is in the mainboard.

Hi tatarimoke and welcome to the community,
If you have Hotkeys installed, what  is shown if you press Fn + F5?  Are you able to turn it on from there?
Installing the card in the second slot makes it the same as a WWAN card.  You would need to install Access Connections in order to turn it on from there.

  • X61 audio problem

    Hi,
I have my X61 for about a year now and everything has been fine. Now, all of a sudden there is no audio output. My computer is not on mute. When I press the volume increase/decrease button on the top left it shows no response. (ie. No green bar indicating volume). The mute button works, it will show a green bar indicating that volume is at "0". I cannot play any audio files and there is an error message saying that there is no audio device.  I checked under device manager -> sound, video and game controllers and it says all my audio devices are working properly and enabled. I tried restarting the computer and it did not help. OS is Windows XP.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I have no clue what is going on...
    Thanks.

I’ve posted this information about audio problems several times.
Over the course of time, XP usually automatically upgrades itself.
    You might try option 1).
Sometimes, neither Windows nor OEM drivers work as expected after you upgrade an OS.
I’ve had three experiences with audio when I upgraded an OS.
First, on an “older” Sony Media Center, I upgraded to Vista from XP. After the upgrade, there was no sound at all from any source: the media programs could not locate an audio device; the control panel device driver settings indicated I had the most recent driver installed; and reported “the device is working properly.” After trying the computer OEM support site and Windows, nothing was available. A Google search about the audio card revealed many blog or forum discussions about the same problem I encountered, but offered no solution. I went to the audio card manufacturer’s support site; the manufacturer had a new driver for the new OS I installed for the specific card on my computer. I downloaded the manufacturer’s new driver associated with Vista, installed it, and all sound from all sources worked.
Second, with a Windows upgrade to a Lenovo computer that was 30 days out of the box, Lenovo customer support directed me to a Lenovo driver when sound was not working. While customer support was on the phone, I installed the driver and everything worked.
Third, on another Sony Media Center, several years newer than the PC of the first example, in upgrading to Vista from XP, Windows did everything and all audio systems worked.
    The conclusions I draw are:
    1) If the PC is an older model, the PC manufacturer may no longer support an upgraded OS. Go to the audio card manufacturer.
    2) If the PC is new and in warranty, customer support should help in finding the correct audio driver.
    3) If the age of your PC in a “soft spot” between 1) and 2), Windows alone might do everything necessary.
In any event, option 1) is usually available.

  • Windows Server 2008R2 on X61 - Driver problems

I use Windows 2008R2 Server on my X61.  I love the combination.
I have been using Hyper V up until about a week ago.  After a recent update of the drivers I am getting errors that HyperVisor is not installed/supported/running.
I am forced to use the Windows 7 drivers for everything since I cannot find Windows 2008 server drivers specifically.
Now I also notice that the PCI Simple Communications device is missing drivers and another 2.
Which are the best drivers to use for the X61's?
Can someone please provide a link?

  • X61 - Can't get sysprep'ed image to boot on it.

    Scenario
I am the senior desktop analyst in the offices of an international business travel company.
We recently won the Lenovo account and the employee of our company that manages the account needs to use a Lenovo laptop exclusively so I was sent a brand new X61 to configure for the rep.
X61 originally came with Vista preloaded but I slapped XP SP2 on it using the enclosed bootable Rescue CD and six XP recovery CDs.
Since we already use a single working corporate image for the 6 different non-Lenovo hardware platforms we currently use, I want to deploy the same image to this user.
I was the person that created the image from scratch and I see no problem with it actually working on the X61.
To create an image for the laptop, one of our fastest desktops was imaged with our corporate master image and brought up normally as if the PC was being readied for deployment.
Once everything had completed, the HD in the desktop had the proper Lenovo x61 drivers added to it and the SATA drivers added to the sysprep.inf file as well.
After that it was sysprepped, shutdown and left lying in its original desktop ready to be cloned over to the drive in the X61 where it would be booted up for the first time after sysprep, in the X61.
So I would still be able to keep the preload on the x61's original hard drive, I used a SATA laptop hard drive from one of our current non-Lenovo systems for the image transfer to the x61.
    Problem
When I clone the sysprepped image from the desktop hard drive over to the laptop hard drive, it refuses to boot in the IBM.
It just sits at the screen with a blinking cursor doing nothing.
    Troubleshooting so far
I have put the corporate image on the x61's original hard drive [with the XP preload] by just replacing the original data partition and leaving the recovery partition alone = blinking cursor.
I have cloned the whole source drive over to the Lenovo preload HD, removing the recovery partition completely = blinking cursor.
I have installed XP from the original CD using a USB-floppy drive and the F6 key to add the SATA driver during startup.
Once completely installed, I figured that it had a valid boot sector and I Ghosted over the sysprepped image without the IB switch and I still get the blinking cursor.
I have researched on the Internet using Google and have found a couple of links that seem to indicate what the problem might be and have listed them below
    Predesktop Authentication
This has nothing to do with the issue at hand as this option lies in the BIOS under Security,FingerPrint.
Its BIOS description also states that this option decides whether fingerprint access is required to boot the laptop and this option has been in the disabled state even while the laptop was booting the Factory Preload.
SATA set to Compatibility instead of AHCI
This setting only affects how the OS sees the HD, not how the laptop sees it and I tried it anyway and it has no effect.
If your XP image isnt properly sysprepped to handle the SATA drive using the proper driver, you will need to set it to Compatibility mode to get into Windows.
As it stands, this is not an issue as I have edited the sysprep.inf to add the SATA driver reference for this laptop and if it ever boots the image, I expect it to never BSOD but thats if it ever boots which it hasnt so far.
    Ghosting using the IB switch
I was SO sure that this would fix the issue but I get the same blinking cursor.
Booting into DOS and using Ghost 8.3, I ran "ghost -ib" and selected the sysprepped desktop drive as the source and the laptop drive as the destination and it still leaves me at the blinking cursor when I try it in the laptop.
    Re-creating the MBR
I have done this two different ways, one using Norton GDISK and one using a regular Windows 98 bootdisk.
The Windows 98 bootdisk kept saying "No fixed disks present" so it never worked.
Nortons GDISK didnt have any issues re-creating the MBR on the laptop or on the laptop HD plugged in the desktop but the drive still doesnt boot.
    Signature failure error
I have heard about people having the same issue as me and getting this error but so far I have not received this error.
As of now, I have restored the XP SP2 preload back on to the laptop to get the original boot sector back as I believe that is the key to solving this whole nightmare.
There are other things I have tried as well and since I have been at it exclusively for almost two full business days now, everything is much upstairs right now but I will remember what I have tried if anyone wants to e-mail me any suggestions.
I await and welcome anyones advice.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi all,
Sorry about not updating this thread but here is the solution and the explanation, hopefully, I dont miss anything because I would like this all in one place so it can be referenced in the future.
The Lenovo's and the Dell's and maybe other OEM's [not Fujitsu-Siemens] use a recovery partition and the boot table that references it is based on some form of Linux as also is the recovery partition itself.
As far as I know, all flavors of Linux use 8,192 bytes for a boot table [4 sectors of 2048 bytes each] whereas a standard boot table is only 1 sector and 2048 bytes long.
This is the reason for the problem that happens with OEM laptops like this one.
What you need to do to get the image to boot is the following [BSODs after booting is another issue]
Create the image to a ghost file on whatever platform you want but use the IB switch in Ghost to create the image with the boot table intact.
Deploy the image to the IBM laptop hard drive ALSO using the IB switch
When doing ANY image deployment to the laptop, the hard drive MUST be IN the laptop itself. The laptop writes its boot sector differently so the hard drive must be in it for the image to work. I was doing everything right but this step and I was still having the issue so this is crucial.
If you are testing the image by deploying straight from the test PC to the laptop by using the Ghost Peer-2-Peer TCP/IP option, start Ghost on both ends with the IB switch but remember the destination SATA drive MUST be in the laptop itself.
    Thats it.
    Hope this helps everyone out.

  • [User error - please replace user] [SOLVED] madwifi trouble

Man... how many of these are there!?
A few days ago, i installed Arch.  Hooked up to ethernet, i enabled Unstable and installed madwifi-ng (and deps, of course).  I modprobe ath_pci, and ath0 appeared in ifconfig and iwconfig.
I configured everything as normal with iwconfig, disconnected eth0, and tried to fetch a dhcp address.  For then, everything worked great.
The next day, i reboot (unplugged from eth0), and the wireless is being weird.  I can configure it, obtain an IP, ping the router, but i can't get online.  I hooked back up to eth0, and with a bit of fiddling, could get the wireless working in the regular manner.
Assuming it was a madwifi problem, i went to AUR and got the stable branch of madwifi, as i'd never used NG before, and it might be different.  I downloaded the package (btw, i think the package isn't put together correctly. It required alot of fiddling), makepkg, and installed the result with pacman -A.
I rebooted, and i couldn't get an dhcp IP.  I looked back over my bash history, and noticed that i had forgotten to get rid of madwifi-ng before installing stable.  I uninstalled NG, but not the dependencies, and rebooted again.  Same problem.
    Advice would be appreciated

i uninstalled both, resinstalled ng (from unstable), rebooted, and did the following:
    ifconfig eth0 down
    ifconfig ath0 up
    iwconfig ath0 essid RoadRunner
    iwconfig ath0 key fffffffdff
    dhcpcd ath0
everything is working fine... i think it got messed up with having both.

  • X61 - Vista Business - Client Security Solution Error - There was a problem connecting to the TPM

During startup my x61 has been displaying the following message, 'Client Security Solution' - "There was a problem connecting to the TPM (security device) ont his computer. It is possile that anti-virus or firewall software is blocking the connection. A missing or disabled device driver could also cause this problem. Please refer to the online documentation for more information".
I have spent an extraordinary amount of time and effort to find identify the cause and a solution for this problem. It occurs whether or not virus software is enabled or disabled and numerous calls to Lenovo, Symantec, Kaspersky, and Microsoft have resulted in finger pointing and no answers. None of the vendors acknowledge the problem yet this same issue is a significant topic of concern as found in various blogs and 'help' sites. Lenovo thought it was hardware and changed the motherboard. Lenovo told me to call Microsoft since it was a Vista issue. Microsoft told me to call Lenovo since Vista Business was preinstalled on the machine. Lenovo told me to call Microsoft and so it goes. I removed Symantec's anti-virus and replaced it with Kaspersky.
The strangest thing is that the module works intermitently and it seems that everytime a Lenovo update is performed (via Thinkvantage) the problem reoccurs for sometime.
Does anyone out there have an understanding of the cause and a potential solution???

I have the same problem on an X 60 platform, which only surfaced in the last two weeks subsequent to running all of the Lenovo updates.   Prior to this, I had reinstalled all programs, starting with the Recovery Disks for the Think Pad.  Everything, including start up, was exceptionally fast.  Once I ran the most recent BIOS updates, along with several others, this error message surfaced.  It is intermittent, however, and I have not noted an issue.
In reviewing several other Message Boards, I have seen this issue raised several times.  Here is a link to a thread where the individual did achieve a solution through Lenovo, but their response is nonspecific as to what they did:   (http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T400_series_ThinkPads&message.id=7143&query.id=1...

  • Have serious problems with X61s

    Hello.
I faced some problems in the last two days with my laptop X61s .
First , everything was fine till I tried to connect and install my printer ( HP photosmart 7550 ) on Windows Vista Business edition ( the windows can't recognise the USB device ) .
So , I went to HP site and talked with some technician , and they told me that u have a problem with USB ports and they asked me to refresh the ports but nothing changed .
The problem wasn't solved with refreshing ports , so I Suggest installing Windows XP on my laptop instead of Vista ( using an external CD-ROM  Drive ) , and while I was installing XP I got the blue screen and I couldn't go any further. So I tried to enter rescue and recovery menue to restore Vista Business edition but unfortunatly , I couldn't find that menu ( when I press the blue button of thinkvantage I get into the normal startup ) .
Some how I could manage to install windows XP , but still couldn't enter the rescue and recovery section . so I installed my Windows Vista  ultimate edition on laptop . something was unusual , the hidden partition isn't hidden anymore .
And here I'm , with windows Vista , and many drivers aren't defined cause I don't have any CD for my laptop.
So i'm requesting your help to solve with my problems which are in brief :
1- Accessing the rescue and recovey section.
2- Solving the blue screen problem .
3- update USB  ports to be able to recognize my printer ( my printer was tested on several PC and it's working )
4- Hide the secure partition .
    Thanks in advance ..
    Regards.
    Drsziara

1- Accessing the rescue and recovey section.
If your ThinkVantage button no longer takes you to Rescue & Recovery mode, you probably deleted it when you installed Windows XP. To get the Rescue & Recovery partition back you need to call Lenovo and get a set of recovery disks.
2- Solving the blue screen problem .
This could be solved when you run the Lenovo recovery disks. If not, post back.
3- update USB  ports to be able to recognize my printer ( my printer was tested on several PC and it's working )
Do you have any other USB devices with which to test the USB ports? Again, the Lenovo restore may help here by installing the right drivers, but the ports should work have worked with your standard XP and Vista Ultimate installs too.
Per the HP help, your printer is not going to be detected by the USB until you go through the procedure they describe.
4- Hide the secure partition .
What do you mean by secure partition? The Rescue & Recovery partition is hidden automatically. Or are you referring to a secure partition that you have created?
It sounds like a new laptop and should still be under warranty. You could just return it to Lenovo to be restored and tested...
    Good luck drsziara!
    I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • X61 on ultrabase using Vista - problem displaying on external LCD

We have a Thinkpad X61 docking on an Ultrabase.  It worked well for months.  The problem exists since two months ago, and I don't know if it was due to some updates to the system.  It is running Vista:
When the notebook first boot up, everything okay, even showing the logon screen.  After the user logging on, and the Vista desktop shown.  All of a sudden, the external LCD blank, and a message on it says we need to set it to 1280x1024 for best performance.  Now, if I open the notebook's LCD, the external LCD gets back to live as well.  Next, we close the notebook's LCD, the external LCD still working.
I tried to replace the LCD monitor with a Sony, and the same problem persists.  The message on the external LCD said something like "cannot support 99MHz frequency...."
I tried another Ultrabase with the same notebook, same result.
It seems that the notebook is trying to adjust to a very high frequency for the external monitor after it logon to Vista.
May I ask if anybody have the same problem or can give me some hints to solve the problem?
    Thanks in advance
    Raymond

    Thanks.
Apparently my problem was I needed to unplug the TV and then let it recognize the Mac.
Now it works, but not perfectly.
The TV wants a 1920 x 1080 resolution, while the Mac is sending over 1920 x 1200. That's not working as each screen has different issues.
The iMac screen has about an inch of horizontal black space on the top and bottom of the screen, while the Samsung's screen is "full", but it's a little off. Meaning, it's cropped part of the image all the way around.
I was told by Apple that I can only display 800 x 600 if I want the screens to match, which is unacceptable.
Anyone know how to trick a Mac into displaying 1900 x 1080?

  • X61 status LED problems

    Hi All,
i've just  bought an used x61 which is working fine, except the LEDs inside LCD cover. I replaced the inverter + LCD ribbon cable + BT module inside, but the only progress what i mention is that the ThinkLight LED is working fine and the Wifi LED only. The others has no light.
Anybody has an idea where can i search the problem?
    Thanks, zsici

It sounds like you have a blown fuse on the motherboard. There is a fuse very near the LCD connector that controls those lights. I cannot confirm that it also feeds the lid switch, but it is likely. There are 2 fuses near that area. The larger one drives the backlight and the smaller one is the one you need. The board is multi-layer and uses lead-free (high temperature) solder. If you try to change it without a good soldering station, you are likely to make a mess.

  • X61s OS Installation Problem

I am attempting to reinstall Windows XP on an X61s laptop, but I can't seem to get around a certain problem with Windows setup not detecting the hard drive. It returns that it can't find any hard disk drived installed on the laptop, even though both the BIOS and my Linux disc can both find the hard drive no problem. How can I go about reinstalling Windows?

    Tristanm, welcome to the forum,
you need to enter BIOS, (F1 at start), and change the S-ATA settings in the Config menu from AHCI to compatabilty mode and you will be able to install XP. The S-ATA driver can be installed afterwards which you can find on this site.
    Happy installing

please edit your serial number out of your post. (top right - options -edit post).
re your question, have you tried un-instaling Adobe? To be honest with you I haven't seen a similar problem. Is it possible that exe files have been conected to acrobat? If so you should be able to change this in control panel - folder options - file types.

  • Random 3G Problem on X201,X200,X61

    Hi,
We have had some issues on the 3G connectivity in the last few weeks. I hope someone could give some advice on what to try next.
    The issue:
    - we have X61,X200,X201 laptops with ericsson, quallcomm adapters
    - they have been struck with a problem on 3G networks
    - the connection opens up fine, but there is no data coming in. The calculators on the Access Connections show that it is trying to send data, but nothing is coming in.
    - If I change the network to 2G, the connection works fine
    - I have tried uninstalling firewall/windows updates
    - Tried updating the drivers
    - Our ISP is working on this, but seems to be useless
    - I have contacted our Lenovo reps, but have not had any news yet
    - I can have two laptops side by side, the other one works fine, but the other has no data coming in
We have a lot of these machines on our users and there seems to be no pattern on the problem. It would be great if you could give your opinions about this.
    thanks

I have an X200 that logs on to the 3G net but reach the problem as you describes.
I have an X200 that logs on to the 3G net but reach the problem as you describes.
I have some luck with rebooting the laptop, than it connect fine.
It could occur when there is low connection.

  • X61 Thinkpad overheat problem

I bought this ThinkPad X61 last Sept. I downgrade it to win xp instead of vista.
When I charge it, it becomes very very hot. It is over 80C. When I unplug the battery and just plug in the charger, it is fine. Does anyone have the same problem?

If the overheat problem happens after installed additional RAM, is this RAM you bought from lenovo or somewhere else? Maybe this is the problem. And another reason, if your machine has been used for a long time, maybe is because the dust, and you need to do some cleanning.
Also, you said you didn't run much things but machine gets hot, please open Windows Task Manager, and open process tab to see the CPU utilization, if it's 100% for a long time and you think you didn't run lots of things by YOURSELF, maybe is some apps automatic runs when system startup and need lots of CPU process, or virus something, please look for process that takes a high CPU utilization, and do something about that, such as uninstall unnecessarily programs, or scan for virus, or disable automatic start items.
In the end, I still suggest you buy a laptop cooler pad. Before using that, my X61 always overheat, especially when CPU is busy working for a long time, and sometime the whole system will crash because the heat. But after using these pad, crash never happens.
