Kext cache running CPU at 100%

This has happened a few times now since upgrading to leopard. I just finished using Software Update to install a couple of things (no reboot required), after which I noticed the system running fast. Launched Activity Monitor to see that something called 'kextcache' using almost 100% CPU. I don't know what this is or why it suddenly feels the need to hog my system resources, but I have to force quit it in order to bring things under control again (doesn't seem to affect anything when I do). Can anyone tell me what this is, why it should be doing what it's doing, and how I can stop having to force quit it?

A brief summary from the man page for kextcache:
The kextcache program creates or updates kext caches, which are used to speed up kext loading operations and to prepare kexts for inclusion in such media as device ROM. It is invoked automat-ically as needed to rebuild the system caches, and can be used manually to build kext archives to be stored in device ROM.
Something isn't quite right. Open the Console.app and look for error messages in the system.log involving kextcache. If you post them someone might have an answer.

  • AME runs CPU at 100 percent and exports very slow

I'd like to find out if there's something I have set incorrectly, either in AME or in the computer's settings. I regularly export videos from 1-4 hours in length. They are very basic (single camera, one layer, no effects, basically adding a title intro and outro screen to unedited interviews and lectures, and exporting for YouTube) The computer seems to take much longer than necessary to export these videos in AME (I'm currently waiting through a 4 hour video that has been encoding for 19 hours, with estimated 8 hours remaining) and it runs at 100% CPU usage while encoding.
Here are some details on my setup:
Computer: Dell Precision M6500 (mobile workstation)
    Processor: Itel Core i7 CPU
    RAM: 8 GB
OS: 64 bit running Windows 7
    Free disc: 110GB of 284GB
This system was purchased by my employer for the sole purpose of editing and exporting video. Is this a competent setup? Its about a year old now, and seemed to be a bit quicker with the encoding/exporting when it was new.
Here's the details on the current project I'm waiting to encode/export:
    - 4 hour video timeline (comprised of four 1-hour Quicktime MOV videos sequenced in a single layer/track timeline) each Quicktime video is under 500MB
    - exporting H.264 Preset "YouTube HD" (VBR 1 pass, and all the following unchecked: render max depth, render max quality, use previews, use frame blending)
    - exporting by "queue" with estimated file size 9624MB
The 1 hour files I received to put in my timeline are Quicktime this time, but I also receive AVCHD files, MPEGs, and other types, all with equally long encode/export times)
Any suggestions or ideas will help....if nothing else to pass the time while I wait for this export!! Thanks

Thanks very much for the input! Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated!
Bill - so you are saying I need 3 disc drives to operate Premiere? My computer actually worked very well initially with its single HD, but I'm lloking into adding HD.
As for RAM, Adobe said minimum is 1 or 2 GB, but recommended 4. So having 8GB is double that! Are you saying that you need 12 times the minimum to run this software normally?
The GPU is NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800M - the Mercury option is greyed out in Premiere, so I can't choose it to change it from "software only" Does this NVIDIA card not work with Mercury?
As for excess junk on the computer, the amount of material on there is constantly changing. Just depends on whether I'm on location or back at my office. The only software I have on it is things I use (mostly Microsoft Office apps and Adobe suite apps)
Rallymax - I'll try to run Task Manager again while I export video next time. The CPU was running near 100% usgae while encoding before, but I didnt take note of  "Disk Que Length"
What seemed to be happening was that the system would start up a long encoding project, and shortly after starting, it would bog down and start adding hours to the remaining time. I talked with Dell, and they had me run RealTemp and check the Dell diagnositcs Thermal Control Panel. The computer was running very hot, and they sent out a tech to replace the fans and heatsink. The computer, while only a year old, had taken on tons of dust, and the tech cleaned out cotton ball sized dustballs. He then replaced the fans/heatsink, and the system has been running much smoother ever since. I guess the system was starting fine, then overheating, and running slow for the duration of the encoding process as a result. Any ideas for a good small office air purifier/dust remover? The tech said this is a common problem, and nothing can be done about it.
Along the way, I did manage to convince my workplace to pick up 16 more GB of RAM for me, which now brings me to 24GB total. If anyone knows how I can get the Mercury business working let me know. And thanks again for your help!

  • Mail running cpu over 100%

Mail 6.3 is running the cpu at well over 100%. Fans running constantly. 10.8.3. removed accounts, re-enabled, nothing helped. Ideas?

    Hey,
problem is solved: I deactivated and again activated my mail accounts by clicking the check boxes in Mail´s preferences menu. Immediately the CPU consumption fell to normal and so did the fan.
    Cheers,
    Eric

  • CPU at 100% (HP DM1-4300sa)

In task manager my computer seems so run CPU at 100% a lot of the time with very few programmes enabled please help before i take it back to John Lewis.

Hello iceman2372.  I understand your CPU is running at 100%.
First, you should determine which programs/processes are using your resources.  Try the following.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.  This combination opens the Task Manager.
    Select the "Processes" tab.
Check the bottom left corner and ensure you're viewing processes from all users.
Click "CPU."  This will arrange the processes in descending order.
List the processes which are using the most resources.
Another good step to take is to ensure that your system is free from viruses or malware.  If you do not have an antivirus installed I suggest Microsoft Security Essentials.  For malware I suggest running Malwarebytes.  Make sure to post the results from both of these scans.
It may also be helpful to have your prodcut number.  This document can show you where it is located.
I will await the result.  I hope you have a great evening!
Please click the white star under my name to give me Kudos as a way to say "Thanks!"
Click the "Accept as Solution" button if I resolve your issue.

  • Oracle Database 11.2.0.1.0 CPU hit 100% on Windows 2008 R2 64 bit Hyper-V

    Oracle Environment Detail:
Oracle Database Enterprise Edition :11.2.0.1.0 (NON RAC, No failsafe)
    O/S:     Windows 2008 R2 64 bit (6.1)
    Specifics: Virtual Server using Hyper-V
    Memory: 9 GB RAM
    Processor: E5540
    Specific about the issue:
I have two database instance created on this server with ‘memory_target=3600M’ each.
I am getting into an issue where I find NO activity on database except regular schedule job running using DBMS_SCHEDULER –
    •     Database FULL export DAILY schedule time 7 & 7:30 PM accordingly for both instance (takes about 15-20 mins each)
    •     Database FULL RMAN DAILY schedule time 9 & 10 PM accordingly for both instance (takes about 35-40 mins each)
This was set up on Feb 25th 2011. Since then we have encounter CPU hit 100% TWICE in this system at around 8:30 PM (SAME TIME). Both database instance exports keep running and never finish. While RMAN schedule job has NO problem. Mostly everything runs every smoothly without any issue.
    Replicate the issue:
I am unable to replicate this issue and do not know the cause of the issue.
    Work Around:
    Oracle services shutdown/Server reboot.
Would anyone know about this issue? Have any information could help? This system will become production soon and want to make sure we have solution for this.
    Thanks in advance!

I am finding that CPU hit 100% is very specific to Oracle 11.2.0.1.0 Export Utility (exp) used to take FULL database export. I understand Original Export is desupported from general use as of 11g but available for specific need.
Have anyone faced this issue with 11.2.0.1.0 Export Utility (exp)? Please help.
I have a need to use export utility which gives us migration options.
    Thanks!

  • XP mode on Win7 Pro x64, windows xp update/svchost pushes CPU to 100% in virtual machine.

Installed xp mode on a win7 pro, dell 490 with xeon cpu. The install goes without error, win xp virtual machine loads nicely, I do not enable updates at the config during 1st startup. When Automatic update is enabled later control panel shows svchost is
pushing the cpu to 100% and the update never completes.

    Hi,
    1. try to run XP in safe mode by F8
    2. then change Automatic update service to Manual or Disable.
3.boot XP into normal mode and see weather its still 100%.
    thanks
How do you start safe mode when running XP Mode in Win 7?  When you start XP Mode, the BIOS is hidden.  By the time the XP Mode window comes up, its already loading the Windows desktop.

  • "Build and Export Cache" fails to export 100% Previews:

"Build and Export Cache" fails to export 100% Previews:
I am moving from Bridge CS5 to CS6 and have a very large number of 100% Previews in my CS5 cache.  The idea of regenerating all these 100% Previews in CS6 is NOT amusing.  It is amazing that there is not a simple import function for this task as a way to make the software upgrade more "seamless"… but apparently there is not.
I have read the Adobe documents:
"Bridge Help / Manage the cache | Adobe Bridge CS4, CS5"
"Creative Suite / Work with the Adobe Bridge cache"
Based on these documents, in Bridge CS5 I used the export function in
    Tools>Cache>Build and Export Cache…
        with "Build 100% Previews" checked
and "Export Cache To Folders" checked.
Unfortunately, the "Build and Export Cache" fails to export 100% Previews to the target directory.  They should appear in the target directory as hidden files in the format xxxxx.NEF.JPG.  Yes, I do know how to view hidden files in both the Finder and in Bridge.
In Bridge CS5 I tried Purging and rebuilding the Cache for the target directory with no luck.
I tried running "Build and Export Cache" in Bridge CS6….  still no hidden Preview files in the target directory.
My settings in both CS5 & CS6 Bridge - Preferences:
"Keep 100% Previews in Cache" is checked
"Automatically Export Cache to Folders When Possible" is checked
My settings in both CS5 & CS6 Bridge - Options for thumbnail quality and preview generation:
        "Generate 100% Previews" is checked
    Using OS X 10.6.8
    Anyone have a suggestion?????

Bridge is the only piece of software I have used, which incorporates a database, where new versions do not provide for importing the objects of the older version.  Very strange.
That is a very mildly conclusion but unfortunately until the cache strategy for Bridge is finally sorted out this problem will exist.
Now I have to confess that I can't use the 'Auto export cache when possible' for several versions now due to a rare problem that after the first time usage without problem created export cache almost every second time generates a warning message that due to failure it needs to replace the Cache T file, hence I deselected this option permanently.
I would think that if you have those already cached and exported files for 100 % preview in the dedicated folders it would read those files and add it to the database and central cache file when having pointed Bridge to that folder, but I'm far from sure about that.
Also after rereading your first post you state to expect the build and export cache to build also hidden files with the two extensions from original filetype followed by .jpg from cache in the folder itself (target directory)? Here I'm a bit lost. The mentioned double extension files only appear in the central cache folder and are visible but buried  in the subfolders for each quality in the central cache file at user library (default) or custom set location in Bridge prefs.
The exported cache to folder are hidden files and as long as I can remember that where 2 files already in the File browser (forgot the extension they used for this) and currently .BridgeCache (very small, few KB) and the for me problematic .BridgeCacheT file that can grow very large and has about the same size as the subfolder generated under full in the central cache.
I can see the content of the central cache without problem including the double extensions and previews of the files as thumbs in the Finder, jet with option to show hidden files I can see the CacheT file but only as a blank document icon and I can't find an application on my system to open this file to reveal its content.
Just tried it on a folder with small sized files and having set preview quality to HQ and 100 % preview (checkerboard icon in Path Bar) and then used the option from menu tools to build and export cache to folder including 100 %. Both subfolder in Central Cache and about same sized hidden CacheT file where generated without problems and the full preview was instantly on demand using magnifier. (but all this without the option in prefs to auto export to folder)
So to me it seems (if I understand everything correctly) that either the existing exported files from CS5 do cause the problem or your setup of CS6 is not working correctly.
Are we still on the same track or am I completely lost?

  • Reset Kext Cache

I deleted a 3rd party kext i was using because it was generating tons of errors, but now it is still generating errors. I was told to clear my kext cache, and I have found ways to do this in 10.5 & 10.4 but not 10.6...
If someone can be kind enough to tell me how to clear my kext cache so I can make this thing run better I would appreciate it.

  • [SOLVED] cpu at 100% w/ startx == error in config of .xinitrc app

    Hi all!
I got some serious trouble after reconfiguring cdm (because of display problems): starting X leads to 100% cp making it unusable. htop says root (usage 66%) and user (usage <1%) have been starting X, with the same .xserverauth-id (process no of root here = 1800; user = 1799.
Usually I start X via .xinitrc, which I didn't touch. Uninstalling cdm and reistalling xorg-server and utils didn't help. And finally, I also can't reinstall cdm, because the project's homepage is down!
So what to do now? I mean, working on CLI (like now) is only temporal fun...
edit: so though actually there's no cdm anymore, X keeps on being launched twice.
edit2: now trying cdm-git; soon getting tuned again

    # started in this way. This may break some commands, including stty,
    # unless you explicitly check for [ -t 0 ] or that every login shell
    # is also interactive. However, we're sending stdout and stderr to
    # /dev/null, so you won't see the complaints.

    # The use of consolekit has recently become manditory with hal. However,
    # some users might prefer not using either one. If you don't want to
    # use consolekit, set the following variable to "no".
    consolekit=yes
    # Timeout for waiting for X session to register with consoleKit
    consolekittime=30
    # Additional arguments to pass to X server
    # When usexinit=yes, we use ~/.xinitrc when it exists or
    # /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
    # when it doesn't. These are passed the chosen window manager as $1; note
    # that
    # the stock /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ignores this and always starts twm and
    # three
    # xterms. Your custom xinitrc should start the window manager supplied as $1
    # instead. There is a sample xinitrc included at
    # /usr/share/cdm/xinitrc.skel.
    # If usexinit=no, then we instead call the chosen window manager directly.
    usexinit=yes
    # Additional arguments to pass to X server; it will be called as:
    # exec /usr/bin/X :$display $serverargs vt$((xtty+display))
    serverargs="-nolisten tcp -dpi 96"
    Do this configs suffice?
IMO in the end it doesn't matter, if cdm starts X or not...

  • Evenlog viewing causes CPU usage 100% on Windows server 2008 SP2

We have Windows server 2008 SP2 with strange behaviour. When I scroll down events in eventlog viewer CPU usage hits 100% and eventlog viewer freeze. CPU usage is split between 2 processes SVCHOST.EXE (lmhosts, eventlog and Dhcp services) and MMC.EXE.
1)I tried to replace eventlog files with new ones. That didn’t helped
2)After server clean boot problem still exist.
3)When CPU hits 100% usage process explorer shows that from SVCHOST.EXE process CPU is used by service EventLog.
Any ideas how to fix this?

    Hi Santosh
    I re-installed VMware
tools and also configured VMXNET 3 - nothing changed :(
    Sorry to hear that.
Windows event log service has couple of dependencies i.e. task scheduler and windows event collector service. Can try restrating those services ?
In addition to above, try following steps
Change NTFS permission of  %WINDIR%\System32\WinEvt\Logs directory, add Local Service and
Network Service, give them FULL permissions.
Stop and Start event viewer service by running following command
net stop eventlog && net start eventlog
Issues like this might occur if the disk (FC or iSCSI SAN or even NAS) has some inconsistencies , this is true in case of both physical and virtual machines
You might want to try running chkdisk as well on the server in question

If nothing helps, try inplace upgrade of the Operating system as an last option.

  • Any problems having Admin Optimization and Proactive caching run concurrently

    Hi,
We've recently enabled proactive caching refreshing every 10 minutes and have seen data in locked versions changing after Full Admin Optimization runs. Given how the data reverts back to a prior submitted number, I suspect having proactive caching occur while the Full Admin Optimization runs may be the culprit.
here's an example to depict what is happening.
    original revenue is $10M.
user submits new revenue amount of $11M.
    version is locked.
data in locked version is copied into a new open version.
full optimization runs at night and take 60 mins. all the while, proactive caching runs every 10 mins.
user reports the revenue in the previously locked version is $10M and the new version shows $11M.
We've never experienced this prior to enabling proactive caching which leads me to believe the 2 processes running concurrently may be the source of the problem.
Is proactive caching supposed to be disabled while Full Admin Optimization process is running?
    Thanks,
    Fo

    Hi Fo
When a full optimization is run, the following operations take place:
    - data is moved from wb and fac2 tables to the fact table
    - the cube is processed
If the users are loading data while full optimization occurs then it is expected that a certain discrepancy will be observed. One needs to know that even with proactive caching enabled, the OLAP cube will not be 100% accurate 100% of the time.
Please have a look at this post which explains the details of proactive caching:
    http://www.bidn.com/blogs/MMilligan/bidn-blog/2468/near-real-time-olap-using-ssas-proactive-caching
Also - depending on how they are built, the BPC reports may generate a combination of MDX and SQL queries which will retrieve data from the cube and data from the backend tables.
I would suggest to prevent users from loading data and running reports while the optimization takes place.

  • X200 CPU reaches 100 celsius degrees. is this normal?

I'm using LenovoThinkVantage Toolbox to do a CPU stress test and and the same time I'm running TPFanControl to monitor the speed of the fan and the temperature of the CPU.
When I run the CPU stress test the temperature of the CPU reaches 100 degrees celcius with the fan going at 7000rpms which all of it sounds excessive and not right to me. Is this normal? or there is something wrong with my system.
    Thanks in advance

100C is around the maximum the CPU can deal with before sustaining damage.  Even then, running at that temperature for extended periods of time is most certainly going to be problematic.
I can't imagine it was designed to be run that way, so I'm guessing there's a problem.  Maybe a heatsink is not seated properly, or something is obstructing airflow.  Either way, I'd say that if you're under warranty it's worth having the depot take a look.

  • Address Book Maxed CPU at 100%

Every time I open Address Book on OS X Server, there is another program called AddressBookManager (AddressBookManag) which opens up and spikes the CPU at 100% even after I close Address Book. I have to force quit in order to solve the issue.
Anyone have any ideas why this is occurring?

I had this problem on a MacBook Air running 10.5.8. It seems to have gone away now that I deleted a subscription to a shared address book on another MobileMe account.

can i update to snow leopard?? and how?  im having a hard time its my first mac.   I need to to create documents, Im trying to avoid buying a new computer.

You cannot upgrade to snow leopard. Snow leopard was the first of os x to drop support for the motorola ppc processors. The latest you could possibly run would be leopard.
    Hope it helps,
