@ key assignment on UK keyboard

I have installed Windows 8 on my iMac using Bootcamp 5. I was perplexed to find that my Microsoft log on kept throwing up an "incorrect password" error until I worked out that the @ sign on my UK apple keyboard was coming up as a ". Once logged on to Windows the key assignments are correct as Windows has ' Apple UK' selected as its default keyboard. I must admit that as I'm new to Macs I didn't realise that Apple put the @ sign on the '2' key on UK keyboards as opposed to the normal place, so I presume it's Bootcamp that's incorrectly assigning the keys?
Not a major problem and not one that you'd notice with a different password but I'm just curious as to why it happens?

If you go to System Preferences/Keyboard/Keyboard and check to show viewers in menu bar, then in the menu bar show Keyboard viewer, you can see what key combinations do what.

Assigning instruments to specific keys on a USB keyboard

Is there a way to assign certain instruments to specific keys on a USB keyboard?
I use an M-Audio Keystation 49e USB keyboard. It works fine, but I have no experience with MIDI and don't know what the "advanced functions" button on the keyboard allows me to do, although I'm sure with some pointers I can figure it out.
(Some weeks back xs4ls recommended the JamPack 3 with the Studio Toolkit. Thanks for that recommendation. The stuff really improves upon the stock drumkit software instruments. But in the Studio Toolkit, certain instruments I might like to use together are often located more octaves apart than I can play at one time. The regular kits are generally organized on the keyboard such that I can play them "live" just like I do my actual drumset. This is how I prefer to lay down my drum parts. I'm also interested in assigning drum sounds from a various software kits to save as my own custom kit, if possible.)

GB3 has a "programmable keyboard" feature that isn't as slick as the stock instruments, but it's better than nothing! (one of the good features of GB3)
I found a bunch of old Qbert (the video game) noises on line, and created my own instrument with those. Pretty sweet.

I'm not sure if you even read the first couple of posts at all. On the old Apple Pro Keyboard (white keys and translucent body), pressing the Help key resulted in exactly the same key code as the Insert key on any standard (IBM) PC keyboard. This meant that regarding this key, that Mac keyboard will work just like a PC keyboard. (I don't care much about the other keys.)
The problem is that on the current Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (white low-profile chicklet keys, ultra-slim aluminum body), the Help key is now called fn and produces a different key code than the old Help key, so that you have to press fn + Enter (on the numerical keypad) to get Insert.

Do you understand what I mean? It's not a software thing, it's a hardware issue in the Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, because fn is a hard-coded, not software-controlled modifier key. I have no idea if there is even a way to get around that, and that is what I am trying to find out.

Map Function Keys on a Windows Keyboard

Is there a way I can map/edit the function keys on my Windows keyboard? I want to create a quick shortcut to assign one of my function keys to be able to move a file to the trash can.

Nevermind. The keyboard shortcut menu in preferences works. The problem was that I typed "Move to trash" instead of "Move to Trash"

F keys assigned to Actions "bouncing"

I have noticed that since the last update of AICS6 (13.0.4), F keys assigned to Actions "bounce".
Pressing an F key now repeats the Action: once on the initial keypress and once more on the key release. And sometimes, the Action will not even be carried out.
None of these keys are double assigned to any other keyboard shortcut (another unaddressed issue with this program: assigning F keys does not bring up an "already in use" prompt).
And a little something extra: Clicking on the Action "Play" button will turn the cursor into a crosshair after the Action is completed. None of this occurs with AICS5.
This is on a Mac running 10.6.8.

You have the only known work-around. I have problems with the Default actions in CS6 not completing. I haven't figured out what to do with that yet.

The escape key in my wireless keyboard stopped working

Did you check the long verticle silver button on the left side of the phone? It is above the + & - Keys. If it is pushed down, you will have no volume. THis is a key to quickly shut off the volume if you forgot to trun it down during a meeting, funeral, etc. If that is okay, go into settings and see if volume is turned on. "vibrate" is no longer an option by itsself.

F# keys on Apple Wireless Keyboard not working correctly.

Hello everyone,
Today I bought a brand new Apple Wireless Keyboard (the small ones who resemble laptop keyboards), which I'm very glad I bought as some keys on my older keyboard started not working anymore.
I configured the keyboard with bluetooth and it's working just fine, except for one thing:
The F# keys don't work as their respective icons indicate (i.e. If I press F10, F11 and/or F12, the volume isn't affected as it normally should, but instead the keys don't seem to respond, as if I weren't pressing them).
In the Keyboard & Mouse panel in System Preferences, under the Keyboard Shortcuts, I managed to reset the F1 to F4 keys so they work as their respective icons indicate, though I didn't find and don't know how to create any shortcuts to make the volume keys (F10, F11 & F12) work again.
Also, I would appreciate if you could help me out to reset the F7, F8 & F9 keys, which don't work either.
I tried checking and un-checking the "Use the keys F1, F2 and so on, as standard function keys." option under the Keyboard tab, and pressing the "fn" key while pressing the F# keys, but none of those attempts seem to change anything to how the F# keys work.
I don't know what else to do anymore and I would really appreciate some help now.

Shutdown your macbook.After thats done , switch the wireless keyboard off. Press Shift + Ctrl + Option + Power Key (all together ) and then release together. Start up the macbook and once that's up start up the keyboard.Try now.The keys should work fine.

Automatic key assignment not working....

Function Keys in Third Party Keyboards

My alluminum extended Mac keyboard went on the fritz after three years, though I admit I may have been cleaning it incorrectly. Anyway, I bought a third party generic keyboard that is more Mac like than Windows like, and it's working pretty well except that most of the funcion keys do not work. I can't get Play, Previous, or Forward for instance. Volume works and a couple of the Mission Control buttons work as well. Other functions such as Show Desktop were reassigned to shortcuts like ^↓. I tried adding function keys for menu items in iTunes and restarting, but the keys just beep at me when I press them. I tried adding a modifier key but no effect. I've been restarting through the troubleshooting but have not otherwise reset anything (pretty much just working through Keyboard Preferences).
Not too bad really, but it would be nice to get some functionality back into the function keys. But maybe this is as good as it gets? Thanks.

You cannot get it be exactly like an Apple keyboard, but you can adjust it as much as possible:
- reversing the order of keys in sys prefs/keyboard/modifier keys (you may modify 4 such keys)
- add 3rd party utilitites for monitor brightness (Shades: http://www.charcoaldesign.co.uk/shades ) and sound (I understand you have sound, others do not, if using a non-Apple keyboard: PTHVolume)
- DoubleCommand to make other changes, e.g. right Enter key to work as Option key (useful for some notebooks, mainly)

Dealer says internal keyboard need cost $120 to replace.

I'm having similar issues with the wireless keyboard, the brightness buttons aren't working and Apple can't seem to fix the issue. They replaced the keyboard for me and the initially worked but now they aren't and this was replaced today.
Can you please let me know how you fixed the f1 and f2 keys? Everything else works for me...

Good luck on the switch. I know I initially struggled with the layout change of many things. If I could give one recommendation/word of advice it would be:
"Learn shortcut keys."
As a Windows user of 15 years, I had become reliant on my mouse (and the occasional alt/tab keys) that I never really explored the world of keyboard shortcuts.
After taking several weeks to finally get the hang of all the various keyboard shortcuts I zip through things now, almost rarely use my mouse except when an ease to use (or remember) keyboard shortcut is available.

Cleaned the keys on my wireless keyboard with rubbing alcohol. Now my number 2 key, w, s, x and caps lock keys won't work. I copy and paste these right now. I did notice the cotton balls were saturated and some seeped out, but I didn't notice that my keys didn't work till 2 days later. I did leave my keyboard in the sun to see if it helped for about 45 min. It's still not working. Any suggestions? Hope There is a way to save my keyboard.

Never clean a keyboard with rubbing alcohol and never leave the keyboard in the sun, or any Apple products for that matter.
You may need to purchase a new keyboard.
