Key frames and motion -- I give up.  I'm just stupid.

I've edited "real" film and tons of video but for some reason I just can't seem to wrap my brain around this motion and keyframe issue. It's completely counter intuitive and I've tried everything I can from common sense to just plain WAG and I cannot seem to understand the process of how to make motion happen in a piece of video. Am I alone in this? All I want to do is to slowly zoom out and tilt from a still image -- not that complicated except for FCP makes it so. How do I do this? Why doesn't it make sense? What's the process? Where's the logic?
Here's what I want to do: I have a picture of something. I want to draw away from a zoomed in portion and tilt as I move back and away -- sort of like flying I guess. Where do I set my key frame(s)? I need a step by step hand-holding here because I just don't get it and I'm frustrated and have already pounded my keyboard once and I know it won't take much more before I have to go buy another one.
Sheesh!
Much appreciated.

Go to the first frame of the clip in question. Double click it to open in the viewer. Go to the motion tab. Position it as you want it to be.
Add a keyframe for position, one for scale and one for center. Open the triangle for the distort pane and add keyframes for each of the 4 coordinates and one for aspect ratio. Now play down the clip to the point where you want your move to end.
Adjust each of the parameters to taste. FCP will automatically add keyframes where a change has taken place. Render if necessary and take a look. Tweak to taste.
If you want it to hold at the head, do the above, move down the timeline to where you want it to move, add keyframes again to that point then go to the end and do as outlined above.

  • Problems with animations using key frames and other bugs

To me, the current version of Acrobat 3D Toolkit (7.0.7) seems like a beta version -- unfortunately I payed the full price. Or maybe there are a few settings only set wrong on my system and someone can tell me how to correct this ...
    ++ Animations using key frames
According to the manual page 86:
    <-----
    6. Ensure the time/frame line is positioned at frame 0, right-click over the time/frame line in the timeline, and then click Insert Key.
    ---->
I cannot get this context menu option (see http://www.vornweg.de/acrobat3d/no-insert-key-option.gif )
++ Empty and hence almost useless Animations Options dialog
The Animation Options dialog does not list any Sequence entries -- although there are sequences available, see http://www.vornweg.de/acrobat3d/empty-animation-options-dialog.gif.
    ++ Mixed up icon bars
Moving icon bars around can result in a complete mix-up of unusable icons, see http://www.vornweg.de/acrobat3d/mixed-up-menus.gif
    ++ Functionless Object Position toolbar
The object position cannot be set using the Object Position toolbar, the OK icon is deactivated all the time although the tick icon is darker green, i.e. supposedly active (see http://www.vornweg.de/acrobat3d/position-panel.gif
    ++ Missing things
Why is there no properties panel visible all the time, displaying the properties of the selected object and allowing to change properties (e.g. positions, angles etc.)?
Why is it impossible to view different trees at the same time (e.g. scene tree and animation tree)?
Why is it impossible to have different models open simultaneously? (E.g. to compare settings or even to copy properties/objects from one model to the other.)
Why is it impossible to create new folders in the scene tree? Imported folders are available, but for the scene management within Acrobat 3D I may have different requirements than the CAD designer had. (Also, I would like to put new objects in folders of my own.)
Why is tabbing not supported more extensively? E.g. All the different trees (Folders, Scene Tree, ...) could all be put into a single tabbed panel saving valuable space on my screen but still giving easy access to all items.
Why is there no Undo for camera position changes?
Why is there no Undo for material edits (e.g. applying a new material to an object)?
Why is it only possible to animate object movements, not the making visible/invisible of objects and changes of the camera position?
Why is it impossible to save object selections? Within a larger model it always is a lot of clicking to get the view required for certain actions.
Why are there a lot of different Display options available on-screen but when a scene is rendered into a file, Acrobat 3D uses the same display option all the time (i.e. Solid)?
Probably this list could be extended quite heavily. And some of these missing things may be time intensive to realize (and saved for future versions), others are comparably basics now-a-days.

I agree with the "beta" feel of the 3D Toolkit. I have been very frustrated getting animation to work well. Specifically, I made an animation that plays in Toolkit, imports and plays into Acrobat 3D, but does not play in Reader. It displays 3D and rotates, etc., but I cannot get the animaiton to play.
The contextural menu issue you see I see also. The menu appears, but without the "add Key Frame" item. I find that if I select an object, move it a bit, move it back, then the menu will appear. (at least sometimes I think) Pretty frustrating.

  • Copy and past key frames?

I have 2 sequence that are the same.
Is it possible to copy and past the video filters from one clip in one sequence to same clip in the other sequence? And have the key frames in the correct place?
I’m trying to do this but its not staying in sync with the sequence what I mean is the key frames are in the wrong place. I’m opening the clip in one sequence going to the filter tab coping the filter with the key frames and then when I past in to the second sequence the key frames are in the wrong place.

    For Kevan,
I only was getting confused by you saying:
...you click on clip/control-c/select 'paste attributes'....
    - 'click on clip', I do understand
    - 'Control-C' does nothing on my keyboard (standard layout).
So I supposed you meant 'Control-Click' which brings up a pop-up menu (or what's the good name for that) which gives me a variety of options ('open in viewer', 'item properties', 'send to...', etc) including 'paste attributes'. And because that's the next thing you advised:
    - Select 'paste attribute'...
...I assumed you meant to say 'Control Click' (Or Right click on a 2- or 3-button mouse.)
edit: This pop-up, I think, is called 'contextual menu', not 'pop-up'
So If on your setup Control-C does the same as Control Click, then you've probably set up your keyboard for that. If this is the only 'problem' you have I wouldn't even consider trashing prefs...

  • Effects and key-frames not working on some clips Premiere CC 2014

Hi. I am having an issue where effects and key frames applied to both audio and video are not working, but only sometimes. Even after I render or export the video, the effects are not showing up. For example, trying to adjust volume using key-frames on some clips works fine, and not at all on others. The key-frames show up and I can see the volume changing in the effects panel, but it is not happening. Another example is changing the opacity on some video clips and it does not work sometimes. Same thing, I can see the key-frames and the values changing, but it's not actually happening. I have uninstalled and re-installed premiere pro and media encoder with no luck. I have uninstalled and re-installed the latest Nvidia drivers with no luck. Just to restate, this only happens on some clips and rendering or exporting the video does not help. My computer specs are:
    MSI GT60 Laptop:
    Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz)
    16GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 8GB
    2880 x 1620 16:9 3K Display
    Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Here is the exact screenshot.  Now I'm also trying other effects as stated in my original post.  But this effect is just an example.  Is there really something that I'm doing wrong here?  Or am I forgetting something?  Is there some special "adobe doesn't let keyframes work on mpg's" rule or something silly like that?
I wish that I could post a video, but I don't know how.
Please let me know what I need to do to make this work properly.

  • How to "ease in" to a key frame

    Hi
is there some way i can ease in to a key frame, so that for instance if the key frame was a motion keyframe rather than the motion start sharply when the keframe was reached the motion  started slowly a defined time before the key frame  and built up to the speed defined by the next key frame along
sort of like a ramp before the first key frame so then there would also be a ramp down to the motion stopping at the second key frame
if yes what would the process be called
    thanks

Select the keyframe and press F9 for Easy Ease or
Select the keyframe and press Shift+F9 for Easy Ease In or
Select the keyframe and press Shift + Cmnd/Ctrl + F9 for Easy Ease Out or
Right click on the selected keyframe and go to Keyframe Assistant, or
Go to Animation> Keyframe Assistant > and choose an option.
Notice how the keyboard shortcuts are listed in the right column. Learn them. It will save you a bunch of time.
For more options select the graph editor, pick your property, the use the controls there to control the speed or the value of the keyframes.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to add key frames in CC

I'm just trying out CC and can hardly get past get-go :-(
I surfed for help for 45 minutes and found nothing useful.
Sadly after telling people people for at least 15 years that Adobe has great products but the worst help files of probably any major company, it's still true.
Adobe help still assumes that you know the answer that your looking for :-(  Whenever I surf for help I try anything before a URL marked Adobe.
    Anyway that's why I"m here ;-)
I'm staring at the CC timeline and I wan't to fade in both picture and sound; so how do I add key frames?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    @Shooternz
Firstly, I really do appreciate your help and thanks to it I now know how to add the key frames.
But to give you an example of Adobe type help and to show that I'm not just being a grouch ;-)
I followed your link which took me to - Premiere Pro / Adding, navigating, and setting keyframes.
    Great!
But does the article start with "How to add key frames"?
    No it doesn't :-(
The article is presented in this order,
    View keyframes and graphs
Move the current-time indicator to a keyframe
    Add, select, and delete keyframes
    Modify keyframe values
    Why?
Why doesn't it start with Add, select, and delete keyframes which would be logical?
Thanks to you I also managed to find http://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/premiere_pro_reference.pdf

  • How to make footage in between position key frames stay in a straight line?

I used position keyframes to move the footage to the right, in different positions near the right side of the sequence frame (not all the same position), in preparation for a split frame crop effect. Between keyframes the footage jumps back to the original position. I selected all the key frames and did a rightclick and set Temporal and Spatial interpolation to Linear or Bezier - but that doesn't do anything at all. What am I missing?

Thanks for trying to help me Ann. The temp. & spatial interpolation on all keyframes is Linear. There don't appear to be any hidden keyframes, but I don't see how to zoom more than the default shown here. Where the playhead in this screencap - between the 2 keyframes - is where the motion jumps back. All the position keyframes align the footage to the right. In between keyframes - and not every one - it jumps back to the center. The extra keyframes in the clip were an attempt to keep that from happening but it justs happens in shorter increments now.
Just curious - is a person able to mark their own answer as correct?

  • Easier Interpolation of Key Frames?

    Hey, me again.
I'm animating a camera around with key frames and I was wondering if there is easier way to select Ease In and Ease Out for interpolation than using the Key Frame Editor and having to manually select each animated parameter and then clicking on the key frame and selecting the interpolation. I personally don't have a clue why right-clicking on the key frame in the timeline doesn't bring up an Ease In and Out option that applies to all parameters.
    Thank you for your time!!!

Normally if you have the selection tool (a) active
all you do is click and drag. You might have better
luck with the pen tool (p) itself, but enlarge your
view in the Timeline so you don't add more keyframes
by mistake. Another option is to do it numerically in
the Viewer: position the playhead right on the
keyframe and type the new value into the appropriate
field. Working bigger has made adjusting keyframes
alot easier for me. Not very prfound help...but it's
    what I know.

    what you meant
"Another option is to do it numerically in the Viewer: position the playhead right on the keyframe and type the new value into the appropriate field."
only permits to position the new KF at the new place. Is that right ?
not to erase the previous one.
As a matter of fact I tried what you and Brian suggested and I could manage.

  • Key frames switch to SMOOTH when they started as linear for multi key frame video animation ?

When i create a series of animated moves on a freeze frame or pic...the second key frame which begins a "hold" ...always changes to smooth from linear after I add a few additional key frames and moves..  I use the key frame button on top left of viewer to add the key frames...I have tried adding the key frames in the inspector but smae results..2nd key frame changes to smooth after I add 4 additonal key frames and moves.  why?

thanks for the reply Steve. I will battle through with this project and show the end result, but you may celebrate a birthday or six before I finish. But I will finish. It is part of a project I am creating from a recent stay on the Abrolhos Islands off the coast of Geraldton Western Australia. It is isolated like few places in the world, pristine and protected. We have friends who are proffessional fisherman and are allowed to stay there on shacks during the limited fishing/rock lobster fishing season.I have some really great photos and video to make use of.

  • Audio Key Frames Scrambled On Import From P Pro

I'm importing three audio tracks from Premier Pro 5.5 into Audition, and each audio track may contain several dozen separate clips.
On some tracks I loose all my audio key frames, and the "rubber band" has snapped
to the bottom and the track has no output. On other tracks, I'm loosing about a third of the key frames, poof, gone. In some cases, the key frames have been moved around within the clip,
say I created a fade up at the beginning with two key frames, and after import the first key frame, at -00 db, has moved ahead five seconds, and the second key frame is
at the proper level, but also has been slid over five seconds. Other key frames randomly drop to -00 db from where they originally were.
In P Pro I adjust my audio automation by setting key frames and moving the "rubber band". I then export by Edit > Edit In Audition > Sequence and check the "Send
Clip Vloume Key Frames" box, and un-check the "Render Audio Clips Effects" box. In the P Pro timeline I have not seclected any individual clips or tracks, I don't
    believe I need to.
A multitrack session opens in Audition, and my key frames are scrambled up.
Using Mac Pro with OS 10.6.8 , P Pro 5.5.2 and purchased the CS 5.5 Creative Suite last December
Thanks in advance for any help that may keep me from going nuts    Tom/ Miami

Thanks for the reply and I do apologize for some of the newbie questions, I downloaded MPEG StreamClip and attempted the convert.
I have to admit the following QT movie inspector details of my original video are below and play fine in QT but once I convert the video appears choppy at times almost as if clips are being dropped?
Is my default format simply not compatible?
If not then what would you recommend my settings be in MPEG Streamclip to export without any choppiness?
Again I do thank you for your help!!!!

  • Need Help Pasting Key Frames from one still image to others, and Changing the duration of multiple still images.

I'm working on a stop motion project, and I have at least a thousand still images to work with.
I have adjusted several Key Frame settings on the 1st still image in my project, such as
    Brightness
    Cropping
    Scale
    Position
I now want to apply these exact settings to hundreds of still images at a time that make up one scene in the project (but not all still images in the entire project).. Is there a way to paste or easily transfer them?
Also, there are scenes I'm working on in which I want to change the image duration of hundreds of photos at once, but not change to duration of all images in the project, is this possible?
I've looked at several different web-links, but none of them have what I'm looking for. If you can please help me, I'd be willing to send you $10 through paypal. Knowledge is power; the solution to these problems would save me hours of time. If you don't fully understand my questions I can send you a pictures or a video, pointing out my needs.

    Stan,
    Thanks again for your input.
When the project is created, I don't recall seeing the preference settings until after the project opens the first time.  In that case if certain media was imported into the project panel but not in the sequence, after the duration was changed, it would be necessary to remove the media from the project panel then re-import again.  If there is a workaround to this please let me know.  It also doesn't appear that creating a new sequence would prevent the re-importing.  Could you confirm?
Thanks for the link on automating to sequence--I remember that from CS4.
The application of identical effects to media on the timeline in a sequence was something I had learned back in CS3 or maybe earlier CS4 where the effected, in this case a transition between images was applied then copied then using the paste or (Control V) command, applied to all other stills.  That worked fine but with lots of images, it ends up being a lot of "point and clicks" since the CTI must be moved to each transition insertion point before the paste is applied.
I actually thought that I had seen someone select the remainder of the images in the sequence then apply the paste command but I was never able to make that work.  Have you heard of such a short-cut?
    Much thanks again!!

  • When I hit the minimize button on Firefox to use the side by side view with Excel in Windows 7, my Firefox window gets larger and won't give me an arrow in the corner to reduce the frame size.

I can't find a menu to resize my minimized window as it is actually larger than the normal window. The frame of firefox goes right off the screen and will not give me a corner arrow to drag it down to size. Normal window view is just fine. How do I correct this?

It is possible that the screen is too wide or too high and that the scroll bars fall off.<br />
Open the system menu via Alt+Space and see if you can resize that window.<br />
If that works then close Firefox to save that setting.<br />
    See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resizing_oversize_window
Window sizes and positions are stored in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/localstore.rdf localstore.rdf] in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder].
Delete localstore.rdf or rename the file to localstore.rdf.sav in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] to test if the file is corrupted.<br />
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf<br />
(caution: do not delete the localstore.rdf file in the Firefox program installation folder)
    Note:<br />
Deleting the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/localstore.rdf localstore.rdf] will reset the customizations of the toolbars to the defaults.<br />
You can rename "localstore.rdf" to "localstore.rdf.sav" to test if that solves it.<br />
Then you can restore the customization by copying "localstore.rdf.sav" to "localstore.rdf" if it didn't work.

  • A question about Frame Rate in FCPX and Motion 5

I use a Canon Legria HV40 shooting at a frame rate of 25fps
Is it essential to set the frame rate in Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5 to 25fps as well?
The reason I'm asking this is that I recently put together a series of clips shot with the HV40 in a FCPX project with the default settings of 60fps and it didn't seem to matter - everything worked as expected..

FCPX automatically 'confirms' any clip rate to the Projects settings.
But ... more rendering to do (=time), 'un-eveness' could lead to blur/quality loss (=how do you divide 25 frames over 60 equally?) ...
Best practice is: cam, project, delivery = same frame-rate.
Exception: for nice slow-mo: HFR on cam, low fps on Project ....

  • I want to know the exactly when the Kinect gives depth frame and color frame in a period of one frame

Hi, I'm currently using Kinect for Windows v2 to get a blurry sequence of color frames as well as corresponding depth frames.
It seems to me that the depth frame is acquired after the exposure time of the color frame. I am using the sample in the CoordinateMappingBasic to acquire the depth frame and the color frame at the same time.
But as i've found out by the aligned depth map with color frame, i think Kinect gives depth frame at the end of the exposure time of color frame. I've tried to obtain timestamps by calling a function iColorFrame->get_relative_time, and for the same number
the timestamps show that depth frame is acquired prior to color frame, which opposes what i said above..
Is there some way that i can know the exact time the Kinect gives depth frame and color frame in a period of one frame.
    Thank you in advance.

Depth is generated based on IR information so when you acquire the frame, that is when it was created. Using the Multisource Frame Reader(MSFR) this does a lot under the covers to align the color and depth frame. If you want to do your own synchronizing,
you can use a polling thread to acquire depth on one and color on the other and do your own mechanism that is similar to MSFR. You will never get Color and Depth to align exactly on a particular timestamp. Since color is its own camera, the only thing
you can be assured of is when the color frame is acquired, the runtime will give you the closest depth frame that will align to it.
