Key tones during calls - only audience hears

I have an HTC Thunderbolt and a couple weeks ago one of my coworkers told me he always hears keys pressed during our calls - for the last year! I had no idea because I don't hear them, but people on the other end of the call do. Verizon couldn't figure it out, so they replaced the device. Yesterday on a conference call I was told it did it again -- now I'm wondering if it is something with the phone lines in the New England area?
Factors I've ruled out:
my cheek hitting the screen - I'm on a headset sitting at a desk using my phone - not even holding it.
my headset - I've had several headsets, too, and it still does it.
an app - the original device was rebooted and now I have a "like-new" device with only a couple apps (facebook, instagram) and it still does it
Anybody else have callers report to you that it sounds like you're pressing keys but you don't hear it??

I got a brand new 16GB iPhone 5S mid-December, as did my better half, on our AT&T plan.  We *BOTH* hear this random 'beep' during various phone calls, and once or twice, I even heard someone else talking that was not on either end of the phone call.  It's almost as if someone is either listening in, or signals are getting seriously crossed over somewhere, but I NEVER had this problem with my older iPhones. Just the 5S.  Any updates would be really nice if Apple would be willing to chime in here, considering the research I found has shown that users on Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint are all having the same problems.
So it would seem as if it is an iPhone issue, not a carrier issue.  Just my opinion.

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

  • Random Keypad Tone During Calls

Over the last month or two I have noticed that while making or recievong calls at random points during the call I will hear a long loud tone very reminiscent of what the keypad sounds like, or when someone accidently hits a key on a regular phone during a conversation. I do not have the minute timer selected so I don't think it is from that. I am at a loss as to what it could be. Does anyone have any ideas or how I can fix it its highly annoying. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

No as I specified in my original post the minute alert is shut off.  Also the touchscreen is black and inert while on the phone so I don't think its my cheek.  I also make sure not to touch any of the physical buttons on the phone.  I may take it into a verizon store and see what they can do since I have been having other issues especially since the recent software update.  Thanks for all of your replies though.

    We won't ask how..

There should be no "Dialing tone" as such...presuming we are meaning the same thing. The mute button on the side is responsible for the ringer/ringtone of the telephone. When someone calls you you can try using the volume button (side) to try and increse it...you can also try it through the settings of the iPhone:
Settings > Sounds >Ringer and Alerts slider.
When someone calls you and you accept the call the button on the side becomes responsible for the speaker volume whether it be the loud speaker or the ear speaker. When someone calls again you could try pressing the + button to increase the in ear volume.
Worth a shot. Please try this and let us know what happens.

  • People can't hear me during calls but I hear them

    Dear Apple,
Please write a patch or fix for this fric$##%%^% problem!!
    I can't use the Fric(&((* phone as a phone.
The patch just needs to stop the controler or the proximity sensor from blocking out the bottom mic. That's all and we can all use this fri$%$ phone as a phone!!!
Otherwise I'll join those others going over to Galaxy's .... or worse some microsoft dragy phone....

I had the same problem this morning. I tried reset on phone a few times. Nothing. Then I restored it from iTunes and it worked fine. This has happened to me before -- don't know the root of it, but restoring has worked so far. Good luck.

  • No sounds, unable to hear anything during calls

2 weeks ago my phone stopped making sounds , and I couldn't hear anything during calls Only if I used speakerphone. I sent my phone away to get fixed and received it back a Week later having been 'fixed' with a note saying the problem was due to a corrupt file , I don't download any ringtones which it said could have caused it. I only use it for normal Internet, emails, facebook, bbm etc. 2 weeks on and its happened again although This time it won't even work on speakerphone ! I am really annoyed about this and can't Bear to be without a phone again if I send it away to get fixed . Has anyone else had this problem ? And is it possible to get the phone replaced , its still under warrenty. Thanks to anyone Able to help me

If the original problem was due to a corrupted file, I would suggest upgrading the os before replacing the unit.

  • Crackle, pop, static disturbance during call.

    Hello,
As many others have reported, during calls only, there is a constant static disturbance that makes conversation so uncomfortable.
Disabled noise supression and slow talk, no change.
Not changed sim card yet, will do this soon and report if there has been a difference.
Will also attempt to use the pc companion repair tool.
Please share any fixes or work arounds that you may know of.
This is a major inconvenience, im not sure i would buy a sony phone again.

If disabling microphone noise suppression did not change anything, try to boot in safe mode, see if the same occurs:

  • Droid Muting During Calls & Phone Running Slow

    Muting/Dropped Calls:
I've had my Motorola Droid for almost a year and in the last several months it started muting during calls - I can hear them but they can't hear me. When I realize this, I'll look at my phone and it is either locked or out of the "In Call" screen (for lack of a better word). To fix it, I need to unlock it (if it's locked) and then enter back into the call by dragging down the top menu. After I'm back in the "In Call" screen, they can hear me (if they haven't hung up by this point). This sometimes happens several times within the period of a short call. Other times the call will drop completely.
I'm always very cautious about my face touching the screen as I realize this may be a cause. Although sometimes the screen is lit when the phone is to my face and the sensor should recognize it's up to my face. Sometimes it's black when it's away from my face and I can't get the screen to come back on without taking out the battery. This is especially unfortunate when my call is mute and I can't get back into the call.
I've tried *228, option 2. We'll see if that works...
    Running Slow:
In addition to the muting/exiting calls/dropping calls, my Droid has been running especially slow in the last month. I've tried deleting applications, pictures, anything I could think might be slowing it down. But it continues to take 5-10 seconds or so to go from email/calendar/texts to the home screen or to open anything.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!

My phone used to mute and disconnect all the time. I almost lost my mind! I never have the problem anymore since I downloaded an app called Screen Suite. It costs about $3 and is well worth it. I have had it now for a few months and my problem is solved. The app is available from the market. I highly recommend it. Good luck!

  • E71x shuts off during calls

E71x in perfect shape shuts fully off during calls only, never any other time. In the middle of a call, not when hitting a button or anything. I had originally installed "xplore" and deleted some native ATT games, installed skfire and google maps. Since then I did the hard reset which seemed to re-install everything, "monopoly" and the other origional native ATT games etc. With the hard reset done, the "xplore", skyfire and google maps where gone and I haven't reinstalled them. Anyone with similar problem or ideas where to look? I got it from Amazon.com  (brand new, not refurb or anything).

On the AT&T help forum the best I could get is that it is a software glitch that showed up maybe on an install of something or they say more likely when I used "xplore" to remove some of the ATT apps (it thinks you are actually trying to shut the phone down...so it does) . Remember mine is the E71x which is ATT branded with all kinds of junk software for ATT. But I did do a *#7370# reset and it brought all the original software back and Google maps was gone, but that didn't help at all. Anyway they thought it should be under a warranty since mine is only 30 days old so I'm gonna try at the ATT store today. Good luck with yours and at least I know someone else is having the same problem. In all the reading I've done it does not seem common so I hope a new phone won't do it too. It is funny how I can text and wi-fi play music and it never hiccups, but as soon as the call is connected it's now powering down every time in about 5 seconds. Google maps......hmmmm.

  • IPhone 5c IOS7.0.3, other people can no longer hear me during calls unless I tap into speaker mode and back?

    Hi,
I'm currently using an iPhone 4S, but my partner has just bought an iPhone 5c. A while ago, before the IOS7 upgrade, my phone would for some reason act as if I had clicked mute during calls. Nobody would hear me, but I could hear them perfectly. The only fixes were to hang up and recall them back, or to switch it to speaker mode and back again. Very annoying. However, after updating my IOS, it suddenly stopped doing this. It was fixed, I was happy, game on.
But recently, my partners phone which was working perfectly fine before the new IOS7.0.3 update, has developed this problem. Exact same issue, exact same solution. I wouldn't mind so much, but shes bought this phone in the last month, its a brand new phone, new software, new model... It shouldn't still be doing this! Whats worse is that when driving, its very dangerous for her to have to keep switching between speaker and not just to get her phone working. (She drivers with the phone in a cradle with hands free on).
This issue is... Annoying. I've found that its not exactly a rare thing, and that a lot of people have had it for quite a while, but the only solution I've seen is to open the back of your phone and cover a certain part with paper/cardboard... Not exactly what we want to do is it.
Does anybody have any advice or a solution to this, as I'm going a little crazy trying to reset everything and fix it!
    Thanks in advance!

Same issues here. Sometimes during outgoing calls, people cannot hear me at all, even when the signal strength is good. Only solution is to soft reset the phone. A couple of times the person could hear me for the first few seconds of the call then it dropped completely.
I also experience the issue with the 3G data as you described (I think they are related... i.e., when the 3G data isn't working, the issues with outgoing calls exists too). The phone will just randomly seem to lose it's internet connection, even with full signal strength. Soft reset/toggling airplane mode fixes this.
I called Apple support; they asked if I was covering the microphone during outgoing calls (as if I'm that stupid). Come on Apple, I have a University degree in Computer Engineering, don't insult my intelligence! They then asked me to restore the phone (which I already did). Next solution they offered me was to replace the phone by sending me a new one first (at a cost of $35), or I could send it back and be phoneless for a week while they send a new one (which is not an option for me). I also put on a $30 Invisibile Sheild so if I exchange it, I already lose that. I believe the issue is not with the hardware, since the microphone seems to work just fine. Given that it is intermittent like this, it seems there's a software/firmware error somewhere that gets the phone into a bad state.
Very disappointed that the $800 phone I just bought functions worse for phone calls than the Nokia brick I had 8 years ago.
If anyone has a permanent solution for this that doesn't involve exchanging the phone, please let me know.

  • Cant hear ringer tone when calling others nor can hear who im calling

okay so everytime i make a call for the frist time i cant hear the ringer tone nor can hear the person im calling.
they say they can hear me perfectly but the only thing i hear is my own voice,
i see the call outgoes the iphone because the call timer starts to count but i cant hear the ringer nor the person im calling so i can never tell when they answer my call or not unless i see the timer.
Now i have to hang up and call again, THEN the second time i call i can hear the ringer and the person im calling when they answer.
i have an iphone 4s 32gb with iOS5 and siri is off, in fact i have never turned it on
any help? is my phone defective? or do i have to wait for an update to fix this?
    thanks!

I have the same problem, but I am sorry to say that I have no idea why it happens.

You use Restore to get the latest firmware build, not the Update button. You can only use the Update button, if there is an iOS update, say iOS 5.1.
this link talks about updating to 9A406 to fix the "No Service" issue with iPhone 4S:

  • I cant hear Voice during call after i upgrade 7.1 i use iPhone 4

I cant hear Voice during call after i upgrade 7.1 i use iPhone 4

    Hey there Goesdhar,
It sounds like you are not getting sounds from your receiver on your phone. I recommend the troubleshooting from the followint article named:
iPhone: Receiver and call audio quality issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts5196
Increase the volume during the call.
Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver. If you're using a protective case or display film, remove it and try again.
Make sure nothing is plugged into the headphone jack or the dock connector.
Check the receiver opening to see if it is clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush.
Try another location with better signal. If the audio issue happens only when on a call, it could be due to the location.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or a car kit, try turning off Bluetooth on your device. Learn more about troubleshooting Bluetooth connections.
    Restart the iPhone.
Make sure your device is up to date.
If the issue is not resolved after restoring the iPhone software, contact Apple Support.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

My iphone dosen't doesn't make key tone sounds anymore when I write a text message or when I want to dial a phone number I don't know how to fix this problem, I don't hear the clicking noise anymore does anyone know how to fix this problem? And all the sounds on my phone are on, even the keyboard clicks.

Try restarting your iPhone by holding down the on/off and the home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, double check the volume button just in case.  If you still can't hear the tones go into your settings>sounds and make sure the options are on.
