Keyboard and mouse freeze imac

Mouse and keyboard freeze multiple times a day.
Forcing a restart is the only way to access computer when they do.
They will work for a while after restart and do it again.
Batteries replaced in keyboard and mouse.
Mouse even switched with wired mouse, both wireless mouse and wired freeze when keyboard does.

Check your batteries in the wireless hardware.
For the wired hardware see KB Article & do the necessary:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

  • Keyboard and mouse freeze randomly

My keyboard and mouse freeze up for 2-4 seconds at seemingly random intervals.  I could go for a couple hours without it happening, or like now, it has happened twice while writing this.  If I'm typing something when it freezes, nothing I type while it's frozen ends up showing up, but if I had hit a key right when it froze, it will repeat itself until I press something else after it unfreezes.  They keyboard and mouse both freeze at the same time, it's not one or the other.  It has nothing to do with standby like the topic below...it can happen right after I boot up or anytime thereafter.
My hardware is an eMachines M6805 laptop (upgraded to 2GB of RAM) and just a basic Dell USB mouse and keyboard.
I tried searching the forums, but the search box on here searches the entire web for some reason even if I tell it to search TechNet, so I apologize if this has already been answered.

I just had my Desktop freeze whilst I was using Media Player minimised to the taskbar.
I came back to my PC and couldn't use the keyboard or mouse. I plugged in a wired USB mouse and this did not work either. I then used the mouse and keyboard buttons on my MCE remote and still nothing happened, actually something happened as my hard drive
became very busy, but there was nothing happening on screen. I had to reboot to get back to normal operation.
I use a Logitech Bluetooth MX500 keyboard and mouse and have been having problems since I had Windows 7, but thought it was the keyboard and mouse at fault. This is the first time that I have encountered this problem, but I have had problems with the keys
sticking, very annoying when you're in Visual Studio and it goes and deletes a load of code for you because the backspace key was the one that stuck. The cursor also randomly jumps lines occasionally and inserts text where I don't want it. This wouldn't be
such an issue if I was a touch typist and could look at the screen whilst typing, but I am not and only realise the errors when I have finished typing.
Anyway, Mine is a custom built PC(all drivers and windows fully up to date) which ran XP with zero problems:
Gigabyte mboard and graphics card (Nvidia) with I5 processor and 4GB ram.
If this was a USB hub Powersave issue, then I would still expect the hub to wake up when a new device was pugged in, so I'm going to count that fix out.
I'm not sure that the freezing was a mouse/keyboard fault, I suspect that this is more a video driver fault as the computer did become very busy doing something when I used the MCE remote, it's just the screen didn't update to show what it was doing.
I should have looked at the taskbar clock to see if the time had updated, I'll do that next time if it happens again.
I've disabled the Power Save options for the hub that controls the mouse and keyboard, perhaps this will stop the keys sticking and jumping around when I'm typing in Visual Studio.

  • Keyboard and mouse freeze

my keyboard and mouse freeze completely/unresponsive sometimes shortly after re-start.  I have to push the on/off button and hold it for the mac to reboot.  How do I find out what is causing this freeze?

    Hello Lucy1949,
Sounds like the entire system is just locking up. So it's not really your mouse and keyboard, but the system becomes unresponsive.
Make sure your anti virus programs are up to date and you have ran a virus scan lately.
Put your computer into a clean boot state and see if the problem still happens with minimal programs running.
You should also check to see if the problem reoccurs while in safe mode.
You can find instructions for both of those in this forum thread.

  • Keyboard and mouse freeze when trying to play Maplestory

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro and have boot camped Windows XP sp3 onto it.
I play a game called maplestory, and when I try to play it via boot camp, my keyboard and mouse freeze as soon as all of the intro splashes are done (So, once I get to the log in screen).
All background programs work fine, however since I can't use my keyboard or mouse I can't do anything. The Apple Remote also doesn't function.
This problem seems to be exclusive to Maplestory, as games such as Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, Doom3, and Portal all work fine.

  • Keyboard and Mouse Freeze On Login Screen

    Hey there,
after just turning on my macbook pro 10.5.6 i am not able to use the keyboard nor the mouse to login, they are like froze, however the system is not. the writing cursor blinks in the password field, and the only button that works is the power button which i can press but cant use the keyboard to navigate, so i have to force shutdown. i can use keyboard to get into safe mode, where the same issue is found. and when i boot into single user mode, i am not able to use the keyboard. i also have tried attaching external keyboard and mouse, also no luck. However when i boot from the mac recovery discs, i am able to use both keyboard and mouse. Please if anyone can help me, i dont want to lose my information due to a restore. Thank You So Much Merry Christmas And Happy New Year!

    lol sorry about that.
ok here is what i tried:
    1) using the recovery disks to repair disk and permissions.
    2) remove battery, press power button for 5 seconds and returning battery (weird, i read it on google)
    3) long press power button
    4) resetting the pram
    5) tried attaching external keyboard and mouse
    6) tried to enter single user mode however keyboard does not work in it to try some commands, also tried external keyboard, same result

  • Brand new macbook pro 17" 2.2 ghz core i7 keyboard and mouse freeze

I just got the macbook pro 17" as a replacement for a broken earlier model.  I ran all the software updates and installed xcode and ran software updates again.  Other than that it's a clean system.  I've literally only had it for hours and was starting to install stuff and the keyboard and mouse completely froze.  The power button worked correctly and got me the options to reboot etc, but since the keyboard didn't work i had to hold down the power button.
This is going to be a pain because it's probably intermittent.  There was nothing in the system.log to indicate a problem with the keyboard.
Anyone else been experiencing this with this model?
    Thanks,
    -jim

See if you can get it exchanged.

  • BT keyboard and mouse freeze one or two times a day

New iMac, started freezing up about once or twice a day after a couple of weeks. Took a few occurrences to realise it was a KB/mouse problem rather than the computer itself. looking at forum posts it seems to be a common problem, though not often both devices at once. Powering the Mac off and then on again fixes the problem every time. Battery strength is good on both devices.
As suggested in several posts, I've tried removing the BT .plist file and rebooting. Assistant took some time to relocate the KB and mouse but managed eventually. However problem still recurring.
Next time it froze, plugged in a Logitech mouse which worked ok and the BT mouse started working immediately too (why would it do that?), but not the keyboard. BT Preferences say both devices connected, and paired and discoverable. Tried to run Set Up, says 'not found' (for mouse also, even though it's working). Turning the Mac off and on again restored normality.
Hung again twice today already. Following another post advice, I've removed Bluetooth from the Networking list (although it wasn't connected to anything). But it's just hung again while i was typing this (at least powering off then on again doesn't lose any data)
I'm new to Macs, so please excuse my descriptions of the problem being more anecdotal than technical. If anyone can suggest a logical course of action to resolve this problem, I'd be grateful.

I spent some time around to read all posts here and there.
I've got a brand new 20" imac with BT mighty mouse & a wired keyboard
My mouse used to freeze once or twice a day.
I used to type ctrl & space bar to open spotlight, type "bt" to get acces to bt panel in pref system, which was enough to reconnect.
I found two issues when reading things in forums:
Some people are facing a hardware issue with the metallic part behind the mouse cover being too folded to make a proper contact
Some other, like me, are facing a software issue. The problem appeared juste before 10,5,6 release, with an airport package.
I downloaded on apple website an older airport package and installed this:
    airport utility.app 5.3.2 (instead of 5.4.1)
airport base station agent.app 1.5 (instead of 1.5.1)
    com.apple.airportbasestationagent.plist dated 29may2008
These files are to be found there:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortUtility_5_3_2_forLeopard
And you'll need "pacifist" shareware to be allowed to install older versions
A bit complicate, but 3 days now and I didn't have any freezing!

  • My Keyboard and Mouse freeze after connecting USB device

In the past few weeks I got this situation where my MacBook Air (13" Late 2010 model) would stop responding to the keyboard and trackpad after I connect a USB device (like an external hard disk, or even my iPhone).
I found one (quite inconvenient) solution: if I connect an external USB mouse and keyboard they work, and after a while the built in trackpad and keyboard start working again. But if I do not have an external mouse and keyboard around me, I am quite stuck and only a reboot fixes the situation.
Any idea what might be causing this, or if there is any solution? It is clearly a software issue, as the hardware can be returned to normal state after reboot.
Note: I have the latest OS - Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50) and regularly update my software.

I have the same issue, on the same model (late 2010 13" MBA).
I haven't been able to figure out a solution either. Strangely, I recently bought a USB external drive and it *never* causes a freeze upon connection. Only smaller devices (iPod, iPad, FitBit, USB stick) cause it. I need to reboot the computer with the device attached to be able to access it.

  • Why does my keyboard and mouse freeze every time I change audio drivers?

I recently switched audio drivers from my M-Audio Ozone to my TV, which I've done before. When I tried to switch back, my mouse and keyboard become frozen! I know my Mac Mini isn't frozen, because I have my clock display the seconds and its still going strong. Help!!!

    Is this your Mac:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac_cd_1.83_17_ig.html
And, is this the RAM you got:
    RAM Type:
    PC2-5300 DDR2
    Min. RAM Speed:
    667 MHz
Even if it is the correct specs, it could still be a defective RAM module; also, iMacs are known to be extremely finicky about their RAM; i.e. OWC (macsales.com) and Crucial are generally recommended here - Kingston (especially their and an other Value brand line) are not. So, have you checked your RAM status? Go to Apple  in menu, click on about this Mac, click on more info, click on Memory and see that the modules show "ok" and please post back with that.
Secondly, the keyboard issue could also be a USB port issue - I had that problem on a previous (white) iMac - I kept plugging in/unplugging. The problem here is that the USB ports are an integral part of the logic board which means a rather expensive repair/replacement. So, once we've eliminated the RAM as a culprit and considering the age of the Mac, you might want to make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar for a free evaluation and diagnosis. You can then make a decision. In my case, I was covered by Applecare, so the logic board was replaced free of charge.

  • Why does my keyboard and mouse freeze intermittently after updating to 10.8.2?

After updating to 10.8.2 on my early 2011 Macbook Pro, whenever I pause for more than a few seconds using either the keyboard or the mouse, the pointer freezes. It takes a few seconds of dragging my finger across the keypad or hitting a number of keys before it begins to respond again.
It doesn't appear that any background process is frozen or that the whole system is frozen because video still plays through without stuttering, and downloads continue updating the progress bar as the freeze occurs.
The same thing has happened since my wife updated her Macbook Air. Very frustrating.
Suggestions on a workaround or solution?
    Thanks.

Have subsequently tried doing a re-install with the combo updater, repaired permissions, reset SMC and PRAM. No luck. When booting into safe mode, works fine but cursor is 'jittery' and the screen is erratic (like an old tv with rabbit ears antenna.)
Any thoughts or help would be significantly appreciated.

  • MacBook Pro Keyboard and Mouse Freezing Up

If I leave my computer unattended, it will freeze up and I will have to hold down power button to turn off, then turn back on. I'm under Apple Care Warranty. Will they replace it? Is it something I can do?

Since you have Applecare, you have both technical support and a warranty if it turns out to be a hardware problem. You might either make an appointment at the Genius bar if you have access to an Apple Store, or call Apple tech support on the phone. Your computer should not be freezing. It will take some troubleshooting to determine if the problem is software or hardware related.
    Good luck!

  • Keyboard and mouse won't connect to iMac

This morning, I suddenly lost connection between my 27' iMac and the wireless magic mouse. I had just scavenged a pair of batteries from a remote control the other day and while I wasn't notified of low batteries this morning, I assumed those new batteries must be dead. So I replaced them with shiny new ones and.....nothing. Using keyboard navigation, I tried to re-connect but nothing would work. My next step was a restart. This is where the computer lost the keyboard. So, again, I replaced the batteries in the keyboard and went through the initial bluetooth setup assistant procedure when trying to restart without a keyboard. It would find the keyboard, connect to it and then immediately loose it. I never got enough time to enter the password confirmation the setup procedure gives you. I found an old wired keyboard and mouse and got logged in and I've been playing around with the bluetooth setup assistant with no luck. Both the mouse and keyboard go into "discoverable" mode when turned on (blinking green light) and the assistant sees them but will not connect. For the keyboard I get the message "the pairing attempt was unsuccessful. This configuration of Mac OS X and Bluetooth software could be invalid or unsupported." I'm running 10.6.7, update as prompted and haven't done anything out of the ordinary on this machine recently.
    Any ideas?

    Paul,
I don't think you did anything wrong.  I think it was just "one of those things".  Things should be OK now.
Give a shout if they aren't.

  • HT1752 I have an old iMac (the rounded type with monitor).  I need a new keyboard and mouse.  Will any work?  thanks for any help!

I have an old iMac for 2002....it's the rounded type that has an attached monitor.  The software is way outdated (OS X 10) and I only really use now to access 3,000 plus songs and old video of the family.  Both the keyboard and mouse no longer work.  Am I able to use any keyboard/mouse and plug in using USB?  Thanks for any help!

Most any USB mouse or keyboard should work. Borrow one if you can and just plug it in.
If the USB circuits are at fault then you can access via Firewire Target Mode with another Mac in order to get at the files.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Another alternative would be to remove the hard drive and use a USB adapter to access it as an external  drive.

  • HT3924 can i use iMac keyboard and mouse when it is in Target Display Mode and attached to my MBP?

I can attach my iMac to my MBP via thunderbolt and run it in Target Display Mode, so that itsimply becomes a screen attached to my MBP.
What I really want is for the keyboard and mouse of my iMac to also operate as if they were attached to my MBP, but I cant seem to achieve this.
    Is it possible?

Its a wireless mouse and keyboard - dont think I can re-pair the keyboard to MBP since I need it talking to the iMac to enable and disable TDM?
I expected TDM to natively pass through the mouse and keyboard to the MBP, since that is the obvious user requirement. But this does not happen.
So I guess I want a workaround so my iMac keyboard and mouse can drive my MBP while attached via Thunderbolt cable in TDM mode.
