Keyboard and Mouse pad don't work.

Can anyone help me? I figured I should come here before bringing it to a shop.
I have upgarded my ram from 2gigs to 4gigs with Crucial ram.
Though regardless if I have the new ram or old ram in, my keyboard and mouse pad don't work. There were occasions before when the keyboard would lock up for a short while, but I have no idea what's causing this.
My only thought would be that sometimes my computer would get unusually hot, but i just turn it off when that happens.
Everything else works fine, the USB ports work with keyboards and mouse's, the power chord works fine, there seems nothing wrong with the battery or display.
Thanks you for any help.

Has your keyboard and mouse quit working altogether or just when the computer is hot? And do I understand that an external keyboard and mouse will work with no problems?
And I am wondering about your computer running unusually hot. Are your fans operating properly? You might want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test to be sure that the fans and thermal sensors are working properly. If they are not, you will get one or more error codes.
Another thing to do to check when your Mac is unusually hot is the Activity Monitor. Select "All Processes" at the top right and check for any process running that should not be which is using lots of CPU.
I don't know if the keyboard problem is related to the heat problem or not, but I would want to know what is causing the heat problem too. Over time, excessive heat can cause damage to the logic board. It could also conceivably damage the ribbon cable which connects the keyboard and I would guess that the trackpad could also be affected. So it is important to see what is going on here. If you have been experiencing excessive heat on a regular basis, this might be the underlying cause of your keyboard and trackpad problems. If so, the heat problem will have to be fixed or the other problem will recur over time.
Try the AHT and post back with any results. Also, use iStatPro to check on your fans and make sure both are running at roughly equal speeds and that they run faster when the computer gets hot.
Good luck!

  • Keyboard and mouse pad do not work; authorised service?

the keyboard and mouse pad on my new macbook (3 weeks old)have stopped responding. I have tried everything to restore it except reinstalling the operating system. The disk utility and hardware test do not show any problems, and when I attach an external mouse and keyboard the computer works just fine. Can this problem be anything other than a faulty connection or lose wire?
I live in Venezuela and will have major problems getting the mac back to the US (where it was purchased) for service. Apparently there are "authorised service providers" here in caracas; does that mean they can work on my mac without me losing the warranty?
    thanks for any help..

Huh...I've never managed to do what you have, so I'm a bit out of ideas...
That being said, if a customer brought me a machine in that condition, I'd boot from a "live" Linux CD, save all important data on an external drive, wipe the HD clean and install a fresh OS.
    Good luck.

  • Keyboard and mouse randomly don't work after boot

Hello there, I have been having a problem lately  with the keyboard. Some times after the booting process it doesn't work, forcing me to restart my laptop even 3 or 4 times before getting it to work properly.
Here is the keyboard boot process. wich has actually a problem that I can't understand clearly.
    dmesg |grep keyboard

I noticed this error during the boot preocess, how should it be interpreted?
I'm sure in the kernel, the device atkbd is selected.
The synaptics mouse instead, doesn't work properly in X
My mouse is a synaptic touchpad and when I start x, instead of loading the synaptic device, xfce simply see it as ps/2. Also this happens randomly.

  • My applemac book has keyboard and mouse pad have stopped working and none of the applications open up ... what to do , it also will not switch off

Please help ... i have an external keyboard I can use and a mouse .. yet nothing opens on the mac book and its gettig hot .. help please

You can turn it off by holding down the power ON key for a few seconds.
To help you trouble shoot, we need to know the version of Mac OS X on the computer.

  • My keyboard and mouse pad aren't responding

When I started my Macbook this morning the keyboard and mouse pad didn't respond.
In my office I use a USB-keyboard and MightyMouse and it seems like the MB still thinks they are plugged in. Now I have attached a different keyboard and mouse but the computer still behaves as if I am using my office keyboard.
    What should I do?
PS: This happened after I installed the latest update. Could this have something to do with it?

Try going to System Preferences>Keyboard & Mouse>Trackpad> and toggling (check and then uncheck or the reverse) the option "Place two fingers on trackpad and click button for secondary click". I have my system set to safe sleep (hibernatemode 1) instead of the default sleep and the trackpad doesn't appear to load correctly on wake from sleep and the keyboard sometimes fails to respond. Doing the previous appears to reload the trackpad or at least makes it function correctly.
As for the keyboard functionality, I run my fingers across the rows of keys and within a minute the system recognizes the keyboard. The keyboard failure is rare, that trackpad is constant. this has happened since 10.4.6 and I don't know if it always did or is a regression.
For the keyboard section you may want to check System Preferences>International>Input Menu and try toggling the keyboard layout.
If you have a third party driver that may be causing an issue because I'm not sure how a Mac keyboard should work differently from any other keyboard with the right buttons.
    Good Luck,

  • My Hp Pavllion dv7 keyboard and touch pad will not work

Hi. My Hp Pavllion dv7 keyboard and touch pad will not work. Been going on for a few months now. Read in the support forum that replacing the battery might help however it hasnt. Ran updates for Windows Vista and Microsoft Security Ess. Boots up just fine however unable to place in my password to get to my user profile and always have to work from guest......unless I have a USB keyboard handly at the time. I use a USB wireless mouse as well.
    Please help and thank you

The keyboard and mouse (touchpad) are separate devices which could go bad at the same time but that would be a huge coincidence. I would try reseating the ribbon cables to the motherboard for both. Here is the Service Manual:

  • Cannot load the recovery media since my keyboard and touch pad do not work

My labtop Toshiba C55D-A5392 may have a virus issue which cause the keyboard and touch pad do not function.  initially only a few keys don't work...after a couple days most keys don't work and now no keys are working and the touch pad failed too. I can't even load up windows now.   I bought a recovery media from toshiba and try to reset the laptop to factory settings.  I received the USB drive media from Toshiba, but I cannot load it since I cannot get the laptop into the bios (since my keyboard does not work).  Can anyone help me to resolve this issue?

Try pressing the fn key and f2 to reach bios

  • Keyboard and Tracking pad no longer work

I have had my Macbook pro for about 1.5 years now and last night both the keyboard and keypad suddenly stopped working. When I booted the computer it booted in the normal way but the cursor is always now stuck at the top left of the screen. I can turn the computer on/off and I am able to use an external keyboard and a mouse plugged into the USB ports but cannot get the onboard keyboard/pad to work again.
Is there something obvious which has locked all the keys or is it something more serious?

Did you ever get this resolved? I just pulled my battery, to no avail. Started a few days ago, and restarts solved it. From last night, nothing. External mouse at home worked. Made appt at Genius Bar, but at work today, with external keyboard and mouse plugged in, the keyboard and trackpad started working again, so canceled appointment. Came home, and no go. Unfortunately , I don't have an external keyboard at home (this is being written on an iBook).
Actually, as I type this, I went back to check and it's okay now. Not sure what's going on. Maybe it was the battery in the end, and it took a few seconds for the release in pressure to get the keyboard/trackpad happy again. But, the battery is in now, but for the time being, it's okay.
Did you find a permanent solution to this?
    Thanks
    EB

  • HT1752 I have an old iMac (the rounded type with monitor).  I need a new keyboard and mouse.  Will any work?  thanks for any help!

I have an old iMac for 2002....it's the rounded type that has an attached monitor.  The software is way outdated (OS X 10) and I only really use now to access 3,000 plus songs and old video of the family.  Both the keyboard and mouse no longer work.  Am I able to use any keyboard/mouse and plug in using USB?  Thanks for any help!

Most any USB mouse or keyboard should work. Borrow one if you can and just plug it in.
If the USB circuits are at fault then you can access via Firewire Target Mode with another Mac in order to get at the files.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Another alternative would be to remove the hard drive and use a USB adapter to access it as an external  drive.

  • Keyboard and trackpad randomly don't work.

Well I'm starting to really hate my macbook pro, there supposed to be amazing then just break all the time.
Now my keyboard and track pad are messing up. Sometimes both of them just dont work atall and if I close the lid and re-open it they work, other times I have to force a shut down.
Before i shut down to solve the problem, and then my trackpad worked but keyboard didnt. Is it my fault? Computer fault? help please.
    Thanks in advance.
P.S: When this happens if I hold cmd alt and esc (For force quit) when i close the lid (It goes to sleep) and I re-open it force quit appears so its like they work they send the right messages etc. but they dont appear untill after it goes to sleep and wakes up.
It can't be my screen 'pausing' or anything like that either cause dock icons still bounce and animations still work etc.
