Keyboard and Trackpad become unreponsive

Forgive me if this was answered, but I'm not sure it's the same thing.
More and more often, the mouse and keyboard will stop responding. I don't think it's software, since plugging in a mouse (or using Airmouse - thank god for that app and the iPhone) works. Also a simple restart always fixes it.
Any other thoughts? Have people experienced this issue?

I've been researching a lot on this but no case seems to apply to mine.
Out of nowhere, about once a day, the built-in keyboard and trackpad of my 2010 MacBook Air will stop working. The only thing that works is the power button, which brings up the power dialog in which I can't do anything. I can also do a hard shutdown.
However, if I connect an external mouse and keyboard, they work. With just a restart through them or a hard shutdown, the built-in keyboard and trackpad start working perfectly. This makes me think it's a software issue, and thinking about it, this didn't happen before 10.8.4.
I ended up resetting the PRAM, the SMC, and finally erasing my disk and reinstalling OSX. After that, I have ONLY installed Google Chrome, nothing else, and it's still happening.
I don't live in the U.S, so taking it to Apple is impossible plus the issue is not easily reproduced, not to mention the computer is almost 3 years old.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

My Macbook keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive for periods of time when I shut my mac off or when I close the lid.

Sometimes it starts working again when I turn it back on and sometimes it doesn't. It's not the keyboard. I installed a new one and still have the same issues. I am not sure what to do to fix this problem. Has anyone experience this before? Any help would be much appreciated.

OK. That makes much more sense.
I would like you to create a new admin user with Users & Groups for testing purposes. Turn off auto-login if you have it enabled. Restart the computer and log into the new account. Test if the problem still exists or has ceased. If it has ceased then the issue is most likely something in your user account. You can start by using software like CockTail, Onyx, or Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner (look for them at www.macupdate.com) to clean up system, user, and font caches, check for old log files, etc. Do this all in your usual account, btw.
See how that helps your situation. If it's not in your user account, then it's a system issue. You can then try reinstalling to see if that helps:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Keyboard and trackpad freeze and randomly become unresponsive

I've got a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011) running Mac OS X 10.8.2.
Since a few weeks ago at random intervals my keyboard and trackpad become permanently unresponsive. I don't recall any particular cause or change that would have caused this to start happening.
What happens is that the trackpad and keyboard will stop functioning completely. The computer, display etc. would continue to function properly:
The clock keeps ticking.
If music were playing it would continue etc.
Internet connectivity (via an ethernet cable or WiFi) continues to work as well (a download will continue, and even resume if I disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable).
Presssing the power button will bring up the shutdown dialog as usual (but I can't use it, obviously, so a forced shutdown needs to be performed instead by holding down the power button longer).
.. but the keyboard and trackpad are rendered inoperable, as if they were no longer connected.
I've made no progress in finding out what could possibly be the cause of this. A few observations:
It has never happened while not using the keyboard (e.g. watch a DVD with TV series for a few hours, and afterwards the keyboard would always be fine).
It always happens while actively typing (e.g. while in the middle of replying to an e-mail).
It is not a temporary problem, the keyboard and trackpad will not become responsive again after some time (the computer isn't particulary occupied with calculating something big, no beachball and no busy mechanical noises).
It does not happen progessively. It works fine and snappy one second, and I'm touching a dead keyboard a split second later.
I tried connecting a USB keyboard but that doesn't seem to work either (I'm mentioning this since some of the linked threads below close with that as a solution).

I've crawled through some log files in /var/log (via the shell and through Console.app) and found a couple things that may be relevant, although they seem unrelated. Etiher way, I was surprised by what I found. All sorts of errors with regards to Bluetooth and USB stuff. I'm not aware of using either. I haven't used bluetooth in years and though I sometimes charge an iPod by USB, I haven't had any problems with that, and this keyboard/trackpad freeze has also happened on sessions where I started the laptop and never even touch the USB ports in the time leading up to the freeze.

Keyboard and trackpad delay when opening.

Well whenever my MacBook pro goes to sleep (when i close the lid) when I open the lid it wakes up... Tell us something we dont know.
But when it wakes up there is like a 2 second delay before my keyboard and trackpad become responsive, and whiles I experience this I can't see the mouse onscreen it is hidden then suddenly it appears and everything works fine.
I cant determine wether this is software or hardware problem. And i cant remember having this when I first got my MBP.
Oh and im experiencing that, what seems to be popular, problem of now and then the keyboard and trackpad just stop working. (I have looked at the post that suggests putting a sticky note ontop of the gold strip beneath the battery, that worked for a while... but now I am seeing this problem more and more)

It's not good to let your battery run down to that low. The Mac will enter a very low power state before the battery runs out in order to give you time to save your data and reconnect a power adapter.

Unresponsive keyboard and trackpad on pre-installed yosemite macbook pro mid-2014

Hi,
I have a brand new MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). Shipped with Yosemite pre-installed, the version I have is 10.10.1 . I don't have any software installed except Google Chrome, so it is clean/new OS.
I noticed sometimes the keyboard and trackpad become completely unresponsive after waking up the laptop from sleep. Happened several times, the last time it happened I could not reset PRAM or SMC as keyboard was unresponsive even after restarting or shutting down so I had to Re-Install OS.
Right now I have the laptop next to me, again the keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive after wakeup from sleep, and I did SMC reset but did not work. Trying to reset PRAM or go into Recovery mode .. etc, it is not responding to the keyboard, as it is unresponsive at that point as well.
What should I do ? How can I tell if it is Hardware or Software problem ? I ran the apple test diagnostics test and there was no problem reported. And I am not able to install Mavericks because it is shipped with Yosemite pre-installed so it is not allowing me to downgrade.

I just noticed that I have the following in the system log, both keyboard and trackpad are completely unresponsive even when shutting down/restart/sleep. I cannot even reset PRAM.
This keeps showing up in the log, not sure what it means.

Keyboard and trackpad unresponsive on Late 2013 15" MBP Retina w/ Nvidia graphics

I just got my a new 15" retina MacBook Pro and am experiencing trackpad and keyboad unresponsiveness. The issue doesn't resolve itself with a restart. I can unblock myself by doing an SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) but after some arbitrary amout of time, the keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive again. I can connect a USB mouse and keyboard or bluetooth mouse and keyboard and those will work. HELP!

Why does my Macbook pro keyboard and trackpad randomly become unresponsive forcing restart in OSX Mavericks?

Randomly when using OSX Mavericks, since installing yesterday, my mid-2012 Macbook Pro keyboard and trackpad freeze and become unresponsive.
The computer is still running whatever I was doing, the computer does not crash, i just cannot control it and the only way I have found as a fix is to restart.
This never happened in Mountain Lion.
Can anyone help?

Mac Mini late 2012. i7 CPU, 16GB ram. 12GB unused.
After installing Mavericks, it seems to grind my system to a halt. It is still running (I can move the cursor and activity monitor updates processes) but every application I try to launch results in a colorful waiting sign. It even can take a minute or more before an application shows "any" sign of starting.
I tried to open a terminal session (so I could manually kill a process) but the terminal session did not even process. It timed out after 5 minutes.
Acitivity monitor shows 90-95% idle and I have no idea what's causing it.
I have already rebuild disk and reset permissions (all seemed fine) 3 times.
I've rebooted over 8 times since last night. I cannot use my Mac anymore reliably.
Please help.

Sometimes the keyboard and trackpad freeze

I have seen some occurences where the keyboard and trackpad will stop responding on my MacBook Core Duo (1st generation).
It usually lasts around a second but i had at least 2 occurences where my only option seemed to force a reboot (the Power button does work). I haven't tried closing-reopening the screen to put it to sleep, this just came to me...
I've searched around for this issue and haven't found a solution to it. Any suggestion? Thanks!
(The MacBook is 1 year + 10 days old, and yes, i have bought the AppleCare package!

Also how much ram you have on your macbook, for standard ram of 512 is not good enough and make macbook temporary unresponsive (beach ball) due the lack of memory and become responsive again after they done finish computing.
But if it was hardware problem and after you reset your macbook the problem still persist, do call apple to check it out.

Mac mini: Keyboard and Trackpad irresponsive

I have a late 2010 Mac mini (in perfect condition) and I love it. It has worked flawlessly till now until I recently installed Yosemite. The keyboard and trackpad are irresponsive (freeze) when I wake the computer from sleep. The monitor would wake up though.
I have tried to restore the default sleep settings and tried every other setting but to no help. Eventually I wiped out the hard disk and reinstalled Yosemite and its not helping either. This problem did not exist before Yosemite installation. PLEASE PLEASE HELP. Its become a big issue and I have to shut down the Mac mini several times each day and I keep losing my work.

Hi - not sure if everyone has had the same problem as well.
For me, the keyboard and trackpad sometimes just don't work and when that happens, the bluetooth sign seems to be different (as attached here).
Does someone know how to solve it?

I'm using MBP 15" late 2008 with Maverick OS. A couple of days ago, the internal keyboard and trackpad are not working at all. I did all the troubleshooting. I even reformat it; installing the snow leopard and re-installing the maverick but no good result. I believe there's no problem with my keyboard because i can still do PRAM on my lappy. Everytime i'm booting up my MBP, it always looking for bluetooth trackpad and keyboard. I have not used those bluetooth peripherals from day 1 i've started using MBP. I just read on the internet about the same problem has happened on MBP 13" retina and APPLE fixed it by updating the software. I wish Apple will also do something for the old MBP to fix the intermal keyboard and trackpad problem.

Mid 2011 Macbook Air - Yosemite keyboard and trackpad stopped working, the only button that worked was the power button, only one USB port works.

I have a Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Upgraded to Yosemite last week.
Three days ago I was using my Macbook Air for the first time since upgrading to Yosemite. I had been using my Macbook Air for approximately 30 minutes, I was using safari and the keyboard and trackpad stopped working (would not respond). The only button that worked was the power button.
I rebooted and they were still not working. I plugged in a USB mouse and external USB keyboard, only one USB port would work (the Left USB port if looking at the screen) so I had to swap between keyboard and mouse.
After logging in there is a bluetooth icon at the top of the screen with a sawtooth line through it. Bluetooth is unavailable and the bluetooth icon is missing from the system preferences menu.
If I run a hardware test by holding D (on USB keyboard) at startup it says that no problems are found and at the conclusion of the test the keyboard and trackpad start working again. When I log on the bluetooth is working again.
I shut down the Macbook Air and when I started it again the keyboard and trackpad and right side USB ports were all not working again. I logged in using the USB keyboard and mouse and the bluetooth not available sawtooth icon had returned.
I ran the hardware test again and at the conclusion of the test the trackpad and keyboard started working again.
I have tried deleting com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and com.apple.Bluetooth.plist.lockfile from /Library/Preferences/ and tried resetting SMC and Power Functions but this did not fix the issue. The only thing that seems to work is running a hardware test - obviously I don't want to do this every time I use the computer.
I do not believe any hardware is faulty/damaged - I think it has something to do with bluetooth/Yosemite.
I do not have the Macbook with me at the moment, if you have suggestions that I can try or additional checks/info you require please let me know and I can get back to you.

I have exactly the same problem, and I can't find any solution.
I can't even track down the root of the problem: the Bluetooth/Wifi module? The trackpad? The keyboard/top case? The logicboard?
I've tried all the usual: SMC/PRAM reset, clean install, kext cache clearing.
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!

Keyboard and trackpad stop responding briefly

I have a late 2012 (current generation) MacBook Air with all software up to date.
Every so often (sometimes multiple times per day, sometimes not at all) my keyboard and trackpad will stop responding to input for 1-10 seconds.
This has been happening since the computer was new.
Every time I go to the Console after I regain control I see the following:
[date] [time] Dock[processID]: no information back from LS about running process
There does not seem to be any prerequisite to that line, sometimes it's the only output written in the last 30 seconds.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

If this were happening to me I would suspect a third party software conflict.
