Keyboard back light on  MBP 13 (mid 2009) not working

Hey guys,
The keyboard back light on my MBP 13' (mid 2009) is not working does anyone have any idea how to fix that? First how do I find out if it's some misconfiguration I did or if it's really broken?

Reset you SMC:

  • KEYBOARD BACK LIGHT for a brand new P55T-A5202, not working

hi could any one assist on this I just bought a P55T-A5202 laptop which has backlit feature, I have tried to turn it on but it doesnt seem to work. I have enable a keyboard function key to show in the monitor everytime I enable the back light, pressing FN +Z and it shows Back light ON, OFF and timer .. but the keyboard back light never turns ON. does anyone have any idea.. perhaps the BIOS.  everything else is working OK

I have a p55t-a5202 that has a backlit keyboard.  I purchased it used about a week ago.  Initially the keyboard's backlight didn't work.  I simply powered down, the up again, and it began to work.  However, I can't toggle it off and on with the Fn + Z key.  Any thoughts?  I have  upgraded all drivers including the Fn key driver for the touch pad and keyboard.  I can toggle the touchpad on and off, but not the keyboard's backlite. Also, I have noticed the following about the keyboard: 1. On the top row of keys, the upper functions only are illuminated.  The lower functions (F1, F2, ........ Pause) are not. Is this normal?2. I also noticed that the Fn key, and the spacebar do not illuminate.  Is this normal?

    Hi,
I Have a MBP mid 2009, 8 Gb RAM, had mavericks, changed hard drive to get more space (500Gb) and couldn't restart from time machine so had to install Snow Leopard, now have OS 10.6.8 and can't update to mavericks again. Any help?

You did not contact us. This is just a user to user forum where we try to help each other out. No one here works for Apple and as far as we know Apple do not even come here. Ring back the number you originally called on and ask for an explanation.

  • MBP mid 2009, Mountain Lion and PRESONUS FP10

    Hello!
I have an opportunity to buy used Presonus FP10, but I am not sure is it completely compatible with my MBP - mid 2009, CORE 2 DUO and Mountain Lion and Logic Pro 9???
It is very good interface but a bit outdated, so I am worried! I don't want to spend my money if it won't work on my MAChine!
    Thank you!

    Hi, Damon
I gave up from buying it. As I didn't get any valid information about FP, I stopped thinking about it. I've been looking all over the Internet and came up with Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. Somehow, I find it even better choice, so we will see it tomorrow! I hope it is boxed with Firewire Adapter (400-800), too. It is 777 KM which is about 500 $.
    Is it worth the money?
If it is compatible with Lion, I assume it should work with ML, too!

  • My macbook is back from repairs. It is not working with my apple led cinema display. It was working prior to the repairs on the laptop. Is there a setting I don't know about that might have been changed?

My macbook pro is just back from repairs.  It is not working with my apple led cinema display. I have followed the directions in the cinema display manual.  am I missing something?

Take a look at the Displays preference panel to see if everything is ok, particularly the resolution and refresh rate.  Displays will probably try to put the panel for the ACD on the ACD where you won't see it.  So click "Gather Windows" to get the ACD panel on to your macbook.
One more thing, make sure you fully seated the mini displayport plug.  They can be sneaky little devils in that they need to be fully pushed in.

The forward, back, refresh, and stop buttons are not working. Even after installing the latest Firefox update. Also my home page stopped loading upon startup even tho I have it setup to do so. Anyone else experiencing these issues? This is my second request for help and of course, Firefox on-line support is always closed.

  • Audio not working...MBP mid 2009 to HDMI

I have my MBP hooked to Sharp Model LC-C32370 with Mini Displayport to HDMI cable(belkin), using Belkin Aux cable plugged into MBPro's headphone port and then to TV....audio still not working. Any suggestions?

On the Thunderbolt to HDMI converter/cable I have for mine, the volume controls don't work in System Preferences. As per the maker's indications, I use the Audio MID Setup utility to control it. Yours may work likewise.

If you get those resets with no external USB devices connected, then they're apparently caused by an internal malfunction. The device identified as the culprit in the log is the card reader.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • MBP-mid 2009-T-style MagSafe charger faulty?

Ok... I've read through several of the 'issues' folks are having with their MBPs and charging. My mother has a brand new MBP--bought this month--September 2010, and it came with the newer L-style MagSafe charger. My husband and I, each have a one year old MBP with the older T-style MagSafe charger.
Noticing odd charging results, and what appeared to be a very shortened battery 'life,' I feared that my MBP was having some serious charging/battery issues. But, I thought I'd try some simple troubleshooting tactics before I drove 50 miles to our nearest Genius Bar. So, I plugged my charger into my MBP and a 'safe' wall outlet and watched it over several days. Here's what I've discovered so far...
The little LED indicator light on my MagSafe charger will come on Green, turn Amber, go off, come back on, etc... all the while it is sitting securely--undisturbed--at an outlet that is working properly. My MBP will announce that it is 'Not Charging,' or 'Calculating,' and/or show inconsistent time left to charge. My T-style MagSafe charger will charge when inserted only one way--top up and bottom down... I've 'marked' it so I can tell which way will work... if I insert the charger with the 'bottom' up then the little LED light does not light up at all. There are no dirty/broken/bent connectors or connections. This is not how it worked originally, and it is not how my husband's T-style MagSafe charger works currently. In fact, the charger he has works without hesitation in my MBP, regardless of which side is up or down. With no unexpected changes in the LED light or the status while it is plugged into the same outlet on the wall and the same female receiver on my MBP.
My mother's L-style charger works perfectly in my MBP also... again, regardless of whether I point the cord toward the back of the MBP or toward the front of the MBP. It lights up wonderfully and charges quickly. We also purchased *speck clear hard-shell covers to protect the outside of all three of our MBPs. My husband and I bought ours along with our MBPs last year -- and my mother purchased hers at the same time she bought her MBP this month. Oddly, the *speck cover has been modified to fit the newer MagSafe power connectors, to ensure that the cord curls behind the MBP.
So, it appears that the battery in my MBP is capable of charging and holding a charge just fine as long as I use these other chargers available to me. The obvious conclusion is that the MagSafe charger I received with my MBP is faulty. And, I also believe that this is something Apple must be aware of, since the style of the MagSafe charger -- and the *speck covers have been modified and/or redesigned.
In the following 'support' article, it seems that Apple could be admitting this possibility when they mention that the cord may be replaced whether in or out of warranty? I just thought folks should know that for some of these continuing power problems... you might want to have the MagSafe chargers checked before you decide the problem lies in the MBP?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
If Apple is aware of this problem, it would be noble of them to simply admit that some of the MagSafe chargers are faulty--it happens, no big deal--and offer customers a replacement. If I had not discovered what was at the root of my problem -- and instead -- had taken my MBP in for repair, calibration, etc. and then found out that it was basically just the 'power cord' at fault... GRRRR... I would be very frustrated.
    Good luck!

The older T-style adapters (that originally came with the non-Unibody MBPs) definitely had problems with their strain relief failing. My friend and I had to replace ours within about 3 months of buying a MBP. Apple actually kindly replaced this for me through AppleCare even before that article existed.
My new T-style connector does not seem to be failing yet, but I have not owned the laptop for that long.
As for your charging problem, it does sound like the MagSafe connector is faulty. However, I would bring your laptop along to the Apple Store anyways and verify that the replacement charger actually works with your laptop. While it may not appear externally there is anything wrong with the charging port on your laptop, even microns of misalignement due to various factors (Magnet strengths, manufacturing tolerances between the connector pins, etc) can potentially cause the electric flow to stop.

  • MBP mid-2009 Freezing after Hard Drive upgrade -HELP!

So, my Apple Care just ended and I was almost always at a full 320GB, so I decided to upgrade my hard drive to 1TB.  I purchased a Western Digital TB drive (9.5mm) at a store recommended by an Apple Genius and followed the instruction on youtube exactly, as well as having another visit to the Genius bar, ensuring I grounded myself often throughout the process. My computer is a 15" MBP originally loaded with Snow Leopard, now running OSX Lion.  I did a Time Machine backup prior to everything and also bought an enclosure for my old hard disk to use and it has yet to be wiped, but Disk Utility says that it's corrupt because 1 program's debug log says the number of files changed (after the time machine processing.) I did a Carbon Copy Clone prior to installing the hard drive as well, so when all was done, I was able to start the computer without issue.  (This program is what told me first that I had an issue with that debug log.  I'd tried to delete a huge folder that was taking up nearly 30GB before the clone, it was backed up on time machine and another backup drive.)
However, after Vuze re-opened (which I'd just recently upgraded to Pro) it froze the computer, so I got the rainbow disk and even Force Quit did not work.  Since then, I've had to reboot with the top right button dozens of times.  Mail, Chrome and Vuze have all caused freezing and Command Option Escape does not work at all.  My beloved computer is starting to feel like a big brick.  I uninstalled and re-installed Vuze Plus since, but still have the same issues (trashing the program then re-downloading).  As for Disk Utility, it says the drive is just fine.  There are no software updates needed and that's about as far as I can get before things crash again.
I would really appreciate any assistance that can be provided based on this scenario.  I hope I've provided enough detail, please let me know if more is needed.
    Thank you in advance.

The only thing that I can think of is that your SATA cable may be bad... it's the first thing that I would try replacing. DIsk Utility wouldn't be able to detect a bad SATA cable - you'd just have random freezes and crashes.
I don't know that this is the solution to your problem, but it's the first thing I would attempt. 2009 models are notorious for having bad SATA cables - try PowerbookMedic and order a new one. If it doesn't fix the problem, call back.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

    RAM 8 GB
    350 GB HHD
Shortly after (updating OS) maybe a day or so, my MBP froze. Applications would not open and programs were frozen. I was unable to force quit opened applications. I hard reset the computer and booted up to the gray screen with a folder and question mark. I ran disk utility to discover that it does not see my hard drive.  I don't hear the Hard drive spining either. I bought a new HHD Seagate 4500 RPM 250GB HHD and it didn't read that either when I ran disk utility.   So I took the new hard drive and old hard drive and put both in my friend's mid 2010 MBP and both hard drive worked (it read it). So I'm really puzzled after this point. I have also reset the SMC and NVRAM / PRAM with no luck.
So what do you guys think is wrong with my comp? Mother board or the wire to the hard drive, something like that?  Thanks for taking your time to read my post. I also took it to genus bar and they said I need a new hard drive and my hard drive failed. Good thing I didn't throw away my hard drive. lol

Update: I think I have found the problem after several hours of reading other fourms. It is the SATA cable that has failed most likely. I will try to obtain a new cable in a few days and update you guys if it fixes the problem. Apparently there are alot of cases of these cables failing in the mid 2009 MBP.

  • Mbp mid 2009 noisy fans

hi i have a mid 2009 mbp and the fans are very noisy can someone please help me

The fans spin at speeds from 2000 RPM to 6000 RPM so that is within acceptable limits.
However the question is what is the MBP CPU processing at the time.
While I am responding to you at this time, the fans are spinning at 2000 RPM.  If you are playing video or a game, it's normal.  If you are performing lightweight tasks, it's not normal.
You may be experiencing a runaway application. Check in ACTIVITY MONITOR the '%CPU' column for a process that may be showing an abnormal CPU percentage utilization.  If so a restart will usually cure the problem.
    Ciao.
