Keyboard Backlight Illumination Uneven After Lion

I have had my macbook pro for about 6 months having purchased it back in early February. After updating my computer to Lion a few weeks ago, I noticed my keyboard backlight is uneven. Is there any way to correct this issue by resetting something or does it need service? See pictures below for reference. I am pretty sure it isn't good. I have also had to have the power cord replaced in July so I do not know if it is related.
I know it is a bit of an angle with the light here but it is noticably brighter in the center and fades on the sides.

The problem seems to be hardware related, so a software fix probably won't be possible.
You could probably fix it yourself, but since you have a unibody, I'd strongly suggest visitng the Apple Store's Genius Bar so they can take a look at it. There's a good chance that they can address the problem on the spot, free of charge.

  • Keyboard Backlight not working after SMC reset

I have a Late 2009 MacBook Pro, and I noticed that the backlight for my keyboard stopped working last night. I Performed an SMC reset and powered the computer back up. Again the backlight never came on, but I noticed that if I pressed the keyboard brightness buttons the icon that used to show on the screen showing what the brightness is at, (like the volume one), was not showing up anymore. I checked the keyboard settings and noticed that the auto brightness for the keyboard dissapeard. Anyone have any suggestions?

try to reinstall your firmware, im having the similar problems, but reinstalling wont let me.... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237

  • Uneven keyboard backlighting

I've had my 17-inch unibody for a few weeks.
The keyboard backlighting is uneven. The 5 key is much lighter than the other keys, and the keys surrounding the 5 are also a little lighter.
Is this normal, or within spec? I don't see this on my Rev A MacBook Air.
Is there any kind of calibration that can be done, ideally one that doesn't require it to be taken apart?

"is this normal, or within spec?"
Without seeing the KB, it's impossible for anyone here to make that decision. However, I'm sure the Apple store can assist you.

  • Keyboard Illumination Gone after updating to mac os x lion.

    Hi all.
Im using my mid 2009 macbook pro more than 3 years now. i havent had any problems with my keyboard backlight. About 3 days ago i bought Mac OS X Lion and installed it, and the backlight is gone. The F5 - F6 buttons does nothing. And also "automatic keyboard illumination" option from system preference is also gone. Im sure that there is no hardware fault. I installed labtic software and it does illuminate my keyboard. so i know that my hardware is not broken. I think the Mac os x installer read my hardware wrong. Does any one have this issue? Can any body help me to get back my keyboard illumination? Thank you. Sorry for my English.

Could not find any solution through Google. Unfortunately I have to use my Macbook Pro without its most beautiful feature, "KEYBOARD BACKLIGHTING". No disrespect to LABTIC. But I don't like using it. If any body have any idea how to solve my problem I would be gratefully if you shared with me. Thank you OGELTHORPE and dominic23 for your kind advices.

  • Why won't keyboard backlight work after upgrade to mountain lion - 2010 MBP

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro. Everything was great, but the most recent OS upgrade cost me keyboard backlighting. It's not a hardware problem because backlighting works with lab tick. It's just very, very frustrating that my machine doesn't work the way it's supposed to. Help!

    1. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    3. System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard
Uncheck the box next to "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light"

  • Problem: keyboard backlighting on Macbook Pro (2011) with OSX Lion.

I have the System Preferences option "Illuminate automatically in low light" disabled. However, when I wake the computer from sleep and the login screen appears, the backlight of the keyboard lights up. Despite the fact that I did not ask for this, although it is really something useful, so I'm not opposed to it. But once I enter the session, the keyboard backlight stays on. Entering the session to make things worse, the machine seems to "think" that the lighting is off, because I press the button to decrease (F5 key) but does not decrease the backlight of the keyboard. Instead I have to first increase the backlight, and reduce it in order to disable it.
Also, if you do the procedure to decrease the light of the keyboard and enter the session, when the screen off (in my case after 5 minutes) stays on the keyboard! If you type the shortcut to turn off the screen Control + Shift + Eject is the same.
Well, I'm looking for a way to: 1. ensure that the backlight of the keyboard is turned off upon login, or 2. completely, 100%, totally disable any auto-enable the keyboard backlight.
One solution is to completely disable the unwanted backlight keyboard. I need to be able to call it manually whenever you want.
This is a bug or feature the same system? Someone has gone or is going through this?
    Thank you for listening.

After upgrading to the Mountain Lion over the Lion, the backlight of the keyboard problem was solved! Now the system understands that wish to leave the backlight off.
Now connect your MacBook to the first login screen backlight is already off. By switching users even through the login screen backlight does not turn over. I tested the backlight and is working properly.
So I believe it was a serious bug that happened to me the Lion.

  • Illuminated Keyboard - Keyboard Backlighting - MacBook Pro

Did something change in the way OS X handles the illuminated keyboard functions in Snow Leopard?
After upgrading from Leopard I am no longer able to turn the keyboard backlighting on. I asked my coworker to test this out on his MacBook and he had the same results.
I've checked settings for Energy Saver and Keyboard but can't seem to figure it out. Has anyone else noticed the same thing? I'm sure I'm missing something but I can't seem to figure it out.

i say a bug! -- it's very annoying that i can't change it to what i want whenever i want (sometimes it's dark enough i still want them lighted!)
i thought i was going insane for a little while too...so glad to see other people noticed the change
someone tell them to fix this please! ;o)

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2010 13", Lion 10.7.2, keyboard backlight / ALS not working

Since upgrading to Mac OS X Lion I have had problems with keyboard backlight and the ambient light sensor. I realized that the problem seems to be caused by ambient light sensor or hardware detection issues. LCD is not auto-dimming with light intensity variation. Since then I've done a Snow Leopard clean install and upgraded to Lion with no success. Then I have done clean installs of Lion using USB Keys with versions 10.7.0, 10.7.1 and 10.7.2 and the problem persists. Under Snow Leopard everything works like a charm.
SMC and PRAM reset did not solve the problem.
When I press F5 and F6 to adjust the backlight nothing comes up on the screen.
    No settings under Keyboard menu.
Any ideas on how to solve this?

    Max,
I have the same model MacBook Pro as you. Have you tried erasing your internal disk, reïnstalling Snow Leopard from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD, and running Software Update to get it  to 10.6.8, to see if it also misbehaves under Snow Leopard?

  • MacBook Pro (mid-2010) keyboard backlight lags after 10.6.8 combo update

I'm one of those who take the extra time to perform major updates on my MacBook Pro very carefully. I always perform all the permissions and disk check/repairs, typically running something tried-and-true like AppleJack. I then always use the combined updater as opposed to the delta, fully downloading and applying it in Safe User Mode. So, I never run into the typical problems. That said...
Is anyone who has otherwise had a successful update to 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro with keyboard backlighting experienced a sudden lag-time with the backlight coming on when touching the touchpad or pressing a key?
There is a definitely perceptible 1-second-ish lag I'm experiencing and I'm hoping it will be corrected quickly with either a firmware fix or an update.

Same here, although I have a MBP mid-2009.
The 1-2s lag is VERY annoying if you've gotten used to the old instantaneous light-up with previous SL.
I've fired off a bug report to Apple - here's hoping they don't just bury their head in the sand and release a fix quickly (I also hope they don't have the same bug in Lion as well, I'll be getting that soon)...

  • Keyboard backlight not working correctly after leopard update

My mbp originally came with Tiger (10.4), when Leopard (10.5) was released I updated. The backlight for the keyboard works normally until I installed the 10.5.1 update. After 10.5.1 and all other updates the keyboard backlight no longer worked correctly. In low light conditions or while working in the dark I have to manually turn it on instead of it doing it automatically. Is this a bug or is there a way to fix it?

Yes, I have to cover the sensors with my hands in order for them to turn off when light is back on, otherwise they just stay on.

  • After reset the SMC, my screen and the keyboard backlighting turn down at the same time when I cover the sensor.

The keyboard backlighting is still on under the lit. What can I do? Thanks! (MacBook Pro 2011 13' ; Mac OS X; 2.3 GHz Interl Core i5; 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3)

After reset the SMC, my screen and the keyboard backlighting turn down at the same time when I cover the sensor.
That's precisely what they're supposed to do.

  • Keyboard backlighting failure after keyboard replacement

I replaced my 2007 MacBook Pro's keyboard this summer after several keys stopped working. The replacement went off without a hitch: everything worked perfectly, including the backlighting.
Unfortunately this morning, when I went to turn on the backlighting, it didn't illuminate. Hitting F8, F9, and F10 cause the keyboard backlighting icon to appear on the screen, but the circle/slash icon is always visible, and the light never comes on.
Is this typical of a hardware fault? Or might it be a software problem? I updated yesterday to Mac OS X 10.6.5, but I'm not suggesting that it's related.

Is this typical of a hardware fault?
Possibly. System Preferences/Keyboard/Keyboard - *"Illuminate keyboard in low light condition"* selected.
Try zapping the pram - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
You probably have no alternative but to take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you if my suggestions do not work.

  • Macbook pro 13" running moutain lion keyboard backlight issue

Is anyone experiencing the same problem? I've upgraded my macbook pro (mid 2009) to Mountain lion and then the keyboard backlight doesn't work now. I've browsed around for solutions suggesting to uncheck the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" found in System preference > keyboard section, but this options doesnt exist for me. Please help. Many thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Free upgrades to Mountain Lion already ended, so now you have to pay to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. I recommend you to return the MacBook Pro and get another one with Mountain Lion if you want. Another option is to wait until Apple launches Mavericks and upgrade to that version
