Keyboard Characters Have Changed!

Somehow -- maybe by the cat walking over the keyboard?? -- a number of the keys are now producing the wrong result.
For example, if I press SHIFT/2 instead of @ I get "
The only way I can get the @ symbol is by going to a character map and inserting it.
Similar things have happened to a number of other keys...such as...
SHIFT 6 &
SHIFT 7 '
SHIFT 8 (
SHIFT 9 )
SHIFT 0 0
and so on...
What can I do to get back to what the keyboard is supposed to do?

Tom Gewecke asked *What do you get pressing the key for [ *
When I press that key I get @...how did you know?
It looks like your layout may have shifted to the JIS (Japanese) type.

If so, I think some people are able to get it back to normal by resetting the PMU. I assume you have already verified that only US is selected in system prefs/international/input menu?

  • Keyboard shortcuts have changed (?)

    Hi all,
I'm in UK and use British English settings for my keyboard.
Recently I've noticed that when pressing shift+3, which would usally
give me '£', now gives me '#'.
So basically shift and alt have switched functions.
I've no idea how to sort this and thought it may have been
something I've acidentally activated when cleaning the keyboard
    (whilst still plugged in)
Like I've hit a combo of keys and this is what it's done.
As always, any help would be really appreciated.
    thanks,
    Ben

Both. The keystrokes matched the unusual shortcut commands that the menus were displaying. I would've just gone with it, but I couldn't figure out how to do Ctrl + c. (No, my caps lock was NOT stuck on. )
I decided to try a system restore, and that solved the problem, and so, unless I decide to undo my restore, I won't have any screenshots. ha.
I've been working with MS keyboard layout creator, and was using my custom made alternate keyboard layout, i.e. not qwerty, but everything was working just fine--a little buggy, but workable. I really thought maybe during some of my 'experimenting' with Function keys, that I had inadvertently hit something that had put me into a 'different mode', but searching Preferences dialog didn't yield any help--indeed, there isn't supposed to be another mode.
Come to think of it, something like this happened to me several years ago with a different computer--too long ago for me to remember right off, but it was on the file menu of the IE browser(?) (which I don't use anymore, but I was trying out Avant browser, which it turns out is somehow linked up with IE, so I just uninstalled it, too).
    Thanks,
    Prisg

After updating my Premiere Pro 2014 (CC), all of the default keyboard commands have changed.  They appear to be PC commands instead of Mac.

The "apple ID Password" box along with the keyboard pops up when I turn the iPad on and it stays there.  I have changed my email address on my iMac and also changed my password.  The old email address is still on the iPad.  Anyway, I can't use the iPad because can't get the apple id password box to go away.  Thanks for any help!

This is an older photo but the sleep and home buttons are still in the same place on all iPads. The home button is the round button at the bottom of the iPad and the sleep button is also called the on/off button and it is at the top right corner of the iPad.

  • My IMac has stopped seeing the keyboard. I have changed the batteries and the green light comes on saying it is looking to pair with the IMac but without success. I am left with the IMac switched on and I am unable to enter a password.

I have been using my IMac without a problem when I left it and went back to enter the password the IMac did not see the keyboard. I have changed the batteries and the green light comes up on the keyboard and then starts to flash indicating it is looking for the IMac but nothing happens. I have tried another set of new batteries with the same result. Is there any known problems in this area. The IMac is 5 months old.
    Thank you for any help

What operating system does your iMac have? (please always post your operating system to prevent confustion).
If it's pre-Lion you will have to set Mail up manually:

Not knowing which wireless keyboard you bought, it is difficult to be specific.  but ...
it is quite normal for the keyboard's power light not to stay on - it is a way of conserving battery power.
    Try this:
    turn you keyboard off
on your iPad go to Settings > Bluetooth
if your keyboard is listed under Devices, then touch the little blue i to its right and choose Forget this Device
now reset your iPad:  hold both the Home and Power buttons down for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears, let go promptly when the Apple logo appears and wait another 30 seconds for your iPad to turn itself on
After your iPad is back on again go back to Settings > Bluetooth
now turn your keyboard back on and see if it appeard under Now Discoverable
if it doesn't read your keyboard guide to figure out how to put it into Discovery mode
touch the listing for your keyboard under Now Discoverable, it should now appear under Devices
touch the listing for you keyboard under Devices, and choose to pair with it.

It could be a number of keyboard shortcuts, here's a few.
If the screen is zoomed,  hold CNTL and scroll down with mouse or trackpad.
If screen looks like a negative,  hold down CNTL OPT CMD and click 8.
Let us know how what other symptoms are shown.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts & Highlighting Have Changed

With this new release it appears my keyboard shortcut for move word left/right and highlight word left/right have changed. It used to be with the ctrl key. It changed to the alt key. I went ahead and created my own option set, but what is up with this? There may be other changes I haven't spotted yet.
Also, the highlighting has changed. The line number is bright turquoise and tag pairs (e.g. <div></div>) are suddenly highlighted in grey. There are more changes, but I just want to go back to the defaults I had. I'm pretty sure it changed with 13.1 build 6443, but I have downloaded two updates in the last couple of days. Is there any way to roll back the updates?
I just loaded 5.5 so I can get my work done without being irritated.
    Thanks in advance.

Looks like I should have read the link at the top of the discussion page. They've made these changes default and I'll have to figure out how to undo the ones I don't like.

I would prefer not to have Adobe change my working environment without asking me - show me how to turn on the new features when I have time to deal with it.
In particular, if anyone knows how to change the color on the line number, I would appreciate it. The bright turquoise blue is a bit distracting for me. I'm having trouble keeping track of the cursor on the page.

  • Letter § and on my new keyboard have change place.

I bought new keyboards for work, 3 new flat ones instead of the big fat ones. Everything works good, except on two of the computers, where the button § and < have changed input. When i press § i got a < and v.v, Everything works perfect. I have tried to changed keyboard from the room where it works but still with the same resault. So its not a hardware issue, has to be in the software. But im using 10.4.11 on both macs.
Very strange, and how can i fix it?!

You might see whether using Swedish Pro instead of Swedish makes a difference.
But it sounds like your machine is using the wrong Keyboard Type.  This note has some possible fixes:

Unfortunately I have no idea whether it applies to 10.4 -- it's been many years since I used that.

    Hey Annar99,
I found a few articles that might help with the issue you're encountering. These first two are if the Bluetooth keyboard you're using is the one that came with your iMac. The first is a general "how to" for setting up your Apple Wireless keyboard, while the second one is for troubleshooting if the advice in the first article isn't working:
Bluetooth: How to set up your Apple Wireless Keyboard
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1809
Troubleshooting wireless mouse and keyboard issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3048
If, on the other hand, you're using a third party keyboard, then I would take a look at the following article's troubleshooting section:
    Bluetooth Quick Assist
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1153#Tips
    Hope that helps,

  • Keys and settings have changed on my wireless keyboard

I use the apple wireless with my iPad 2, and somehow the language settings have changed and keys have changed placed. How do I fix this?

    Thanks,
I thought I had done this earlier, but when I tried again (a well as purposefully selecting a different language, then back to Norwegian) it seemed to work.

  • Keyboard shortcut for change bars

I have the pleasure (?!) of updating the technical content of a whole series of documents written originally by a bunch of people, and sending the results to yet another bunch of people for review. To help the reviewers identify where I've made changes, I use change bars. Great so far...
However, while updating the original work I'm finding that I have to repair spelling, grammar and formatting errors too. The resulting change bars would be a real mess if I didn't turn them off for each of the minor repair jobs, so that they identified only the changes to technical content.
According to the FM Help and other information sources, the ESC c h or the Ctrl+Shift+H keyboard shortcut sequences toggle change bars on and off, but in reality this doesn't happen. Does anyone know of a quick way to toggle change bars?

    > According to the FM Help and other information sources,
    > the ESC c h or the Ctrl+Shift+H keyboard shortcut sequences
    > toggle change bars on and off, but in reality this doesn't happen.
They work for me. Perhaps they don't work the way you expect.
If you want to turn off change bars, so that they're no longer
applied when you make a change, you use "Esc o b" and turn
the function off in the dialog that opens. Turn them on again
    in the same way.
If you already have a change bar applied, and you want to
delete it, then you can use Ctrl+Shift+H. The problem is that
the shortcut toggles the change bars, and change bars is a
character property. The easiest way to do it is:
    1. Select a range of characters bigger than where the
change actually occurs. If possible, it's often easiest
    to select the entire paragraph.
    2. Press Ctrl+Shift+H *twice*. The first time, change
bars are applied to all characters. The second time, the
    change bars are removed.
Or, use the Find function to search for change bars,
and then press Ctrl+Shift+H *once*. Since the search
selects the exact characters where change bars are
applied, you only need one press to remove them.

  • Opera's keyboard shortcuts keep changing

When I browse some sites, like Orkut, my keyboard shortcut configuration changes. Don't know why this happens, and when it happens, I cannot write any letter with an accent, like "é", "ã" etc.
So everytime I enter that kind of site I have to go to Tools - Preferences - Shortcuts - Keyboard configuration and change the standard to Opera standard for UNIX. Now I can write letters with accent, but when I enter the site again, I have to do everything again!
Does anybody have this problem too?

    Ever heard about Unicode?
To explain it briefly: Before Unicode every charset consisted of 255 different characters (some are control characters, like e.g. line break). This means you can only use these characters. This is a problem if you want to use e.g. cryllic characters or even worse if you are asian and your alphabet consists of much more than 255 characters.
Now with Unicode there are more characters possible. UTF-8 is now one implementation of Unicode. If you open an UTF-8 document with latin1 encoding, you'll realize that special characters (like umlauts, accented characters,...) break into two characters. e.g. Ä breaks into ä As you see, there are some characters (standard ASCII) only using the space of one character and some using up two four traditional characters.
