my mAcbook pro keyboArd hAs four chArActers which only type in upper cAse As you cAn see. those being the A Q Z And ! (one) Any ideAs?

Use a can of compressed air or a brushed vacuum hose to clean out the dirt under the keys. If that does not work, your issue is probably hardware related. Especially if you spilled liquid and did not clean it properly. If you are still under warranty or have Apple Care, call them and get a case number. Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you.
Liquid damage is not covered under Apple's warranty.

Feature Request: Support pasting text as a stream of keyboard characters

Please support pasting text as a stream of keyboard characters from a menu click rather than just relying on the remote server clipboard integration.
Often I'm in a situation where the remote desktop integration with the clipboard is disabled. E.g. password change screens. I use a local password manager to create and maintain passwords. These are often ridiculously complex to type. Sometimes they need
to be sent over the wire as characters rather than as a clipboard transfer message. This client doesn't allow this to work and makes it painful to remain secure.
Please make this less painful.

I am trying to sync them both to the same computer (Windows), and with the 2nd ipod, it looks like everything is going to work out fine, until I go to add songs from my itunes music library...then, after a few seconds of me hoping it will work, I get a message that says "Attempting to copy to Lisa's disk failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I thought it might have been my ipod. But then I tried to download songs from my sister's computer, and even my work computer (just to see if it would work), and it did. So I'm not sure what is going on here. Is it my computer, or is it the ipod? Or is it itunes?
Also, my sister in-law said her issue is similar, in that her itunes doesn't recognize her ipod now that my brother's ipod has been used on their computer. She gets the same message as I do...thus she is unable to download any songs onto her ipod.
If you have any helpful tips, it would be greatly appreciated.

Illustrator CS4 Keyboard Input HELP

Hello, I have searched these forums (as well as the interwebs) up, down, left, and right so I apologize if this has been brought up before.
This problem began shortly after upgrading to CS4 so it never occurred in CS3.
Anytime illustrator is opened, shortly after I lose almost all function of the keyboard. This not only applies to illustrator but also any other programs open at the time (exe: firefox, skype). I can only input ONE character, then, the keyboard basically becomes useless, unless i click in the window somewhere which then permits me again, only ONE character input.
This has rendered my shortcuts in illustrator, any numeric entries, and any control+keys useless. The only fix, is closing illustrator, reopening, and using again for 5-10mins before the keyboard fails again.
If i jump into another program (with illustrator open), like firefox for instance and try to start typing a URL, the first letter i type works fine, but each subsequent letter i type in simply replaces the first one (the letter highlights itself like if i clicked and dragged over the letter, then the new letter just replaces that).
Another issue with the keyboard, is that sometimes when i start to enter characters, it will jump to another program I have open, for instance, illustrator, firefox, and skype are open. Start to type in the skype chat box, and all of a sudden firefox jumps to the front.
Also, if open up CS3 illustrator, that same problem now occurs, however it never occurred prior to CS4.

I had a similar problem with my mouse until I replaced it. There was something awry with the cable connecting the mouse to the computer. Since you say you have replicated the problem across various OS's and various keyboards, not sure where to direct you other than your computer manufacturer. It can't be a CS4 issue because you're experiencing the same problem with Firefox and Skype, right?

German keyboard/ characters

I'm a really new mac user! I need to be able to type German accents EASILY and can't figure out how to do this? Reset my keyboard or ... HELP!

Two assumptions I'll make -
(1) That you are using Mac OS 9 (since that's the forum in which you posted)
(2) That you are after the umlaut characters and the funny double-S
If you currently have the US English Keyboard Layout active, you can do the umlaut by pressing the key-combo Option-u followed by the character you want. Works with capitals, tooExamples -
Option-u plus a types ä
Option-u plus e types ë
Option-u plus i types ï
Option-u plus o types ö
Option-u plus u types ü
Option-u plus y types ÿ
Option-u plus A types Ä
(etc.)
For the ß character, press Option-s. I think this may actually be a capital beta (Greek letter), but it bears a close resemblence to the old German character.

You can also reset the keyboard to a German keyboard layout. This makes accessing some German and European characters easier, but means having to learn a new pattern for the keys. If you want to try that, make sure that German is checkmarked in the list in the Keyboard control panel. Once more than one language is checkmarked in that control panel, a small flag icon will be added to the main menubar, which represents the keyboard language menu. You can then use that new menu to select the language layout you want activre. You can use the utility Key Caps (usually found in the Apple menu) to see what's where in the new layout.

Stuck In Boot Camp With Broken Keyboard PLEASE HELP

Just recently, I decided I wanted to install Windows 7 on my iMac for gaming. Now, this has worked before, so I expected it to go without a hitch.
Now I sit here (on my Dad's PC), waiting for an answer. I am stuck on the black screen saying "No bootable device - press any key". I see a lot of other posts saying that I need to press option on my keyboard, but that's another problem. I have a Windows gaming keyboard, so the keys have a Windows layout. So instead, I pressed alt, which apparently is the equivalent. Nothing. I tried all the other key shortcuts, and still nothing. I noticed that when I booted up, my keyboard lit up (it's LED), but if I pressed CAPS lock or the num key, the indicators wouldn't light up.
All I want to do is boot into OS X! This is extremely frustrating, as I have some very important work on my iMac.
Someone please help me.
P.S I have tried with other keyboards, and that hasn't fixed it.

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you are trying to use your MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display in closed clamshell mode (MacBook Pro closed), but sometimes the display doesn't stay on. I found an article that talks about closed clamshell mode. You would have to fulfill the following requirements to use your display this way:
Requirements for closed display mode:
Power adapter
External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
External display

Keyboard characters are no displaying correctly

My keyboard is not displaying the correct characters. The letters and numbers are OK but characters such as the question mark, colon, the at sign, etc do not display correctly. I've tried a portable keyboard and the same thing happens.
The software is Microsoft Office 2011 for mac. Is this a software problem?

It sounds like another key is being pressed while you are typing. Check out the article below and look at the section for showing the Keyboard Viewer to make sure that when typing, that the right keys are being pressed.

Go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and make sure that ONLY the box for US is checked (or whatever keyboard you normally use, we have no way of knowing what country you are in if you don't tell us).

Flat keyboard - no help key - eclipse

Hi all,
on eclipse, context-sensitive help is called by "help"-button. And it works fine with a standard mac-keyboard.
But there's no help-button on the new flat keyboards or macbooks.
Using AppleShift? doesn't work, creating a new shortcut in eclipse-preferences doesn't work too.
It seems it has to be the original "help"-button, who's not there.
The problem is discussed on fdt-board and eclipse-newsgroups, but without a solution.
Does anyone know how to invoke context sensitive help with a macbook or a flat keyboard on eclipse?
Or how to "bypass" the help-key to the f1-button in the system?

Logic Pro X midi keyboard (EXS24 help)

So im new to logic (December 2013) and have been using it to make some hip hop beats. I use a akai mpk25 keyboard with logic pro x. I have been using the EXS24 sampler a lot in my production. I have saved many sampler instrumentals with different kicks, snares, percussion etc. And for the longest time the left most key on my mpk was C2 inside of logic. And all my exs instruments started with C2 and worked its way down so every key played a different sound. Now randomly, dont know what I did but its saying that leftmost key is C1 and when i hit the keys on the left side of my keyboard no sounds come out until i get to about the middle of the keyboard where the new C2 is..... Probably an easy fix but i dont know Im a rookie lol. Only like half the sounds will play in all my sampler instruments and i would appreciate some help. thanks

While it could be Logic, have you checked your keyboard manual and see if you accidently hi the transpose buttone or octave change button. I would look there first

Daughter got a hold of keyboard please help

well command n used to open up a new safari window, now it just takes me to: Searching "This Mac". i don't know what happened. Even if safari is the main app. it will still take me to Searching "This Mac" each and every time. went to best buy to get help and mac rep said go to go to sys. preferences/keyboard,Restore defaults. It Did not Work. the only way to get second window to open is to is to go to file and click on new window. Any Help Would Be appreciated.

In the Finder File menu, what does it list for the Find command keyboard shortcut?
You might try deleting the com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist file from your user/Library/Preferences folder.

Keyboard Characters in Other Languages

Hi,
Because I'm starting to forget my first language, Spanish, I decided to turn my system into Spanish. Now, the only problem I have is that a few characters that do appear in English, don't appear in the Spanish layout, such as the "@" sign (I had to go to Edit>Special Characters) to get that sign. Is there an easier way to get that type of symbol in the keyboard?

If you want to change the way the Spanish layout works, you can make a custom layout with Ukelele:

By the way, there is no need to use the Spanish layout to type Spanish. The US layout can make all the Spanish special characters via Option/alt shortcuts. Here is a list:

Indesign CS4 Problem with weird characters HELP!!!

I am rather new to Indesign, but have been using it for several months with no problems. I design our church bulletins and my youth group bulletins using it every week. I don't know what happened but I opened previous documents tonight and when I tried to change the text with the text boxes, it shows the text being changed, but when I hit space or click off the text it turns into boxes instead of the text characters I typed. I have tried opening other docs and even other text boxes within the docs and everytime it does the same thing. When changing numbers it brings up a little box with numbers and chinese looking symbols next to them. This is really confusing me and google searching has come up with nothing to help. Can someone please help me before I lose my mind???

Read everything.
If that doesn't solve the problem, it sounds like a font problem. Are you having any other problems in other applications? It's possible you've selected a differnt fron than you are used to using.
