Keyboard - Circumflexes in Greek

Hi
I'm trying to insert some classical greek words on my iPhone. I'm using the greek international keyboard for this. To put an acute accent I can just hold down the vowel and select the button with the accent above the letter or hit the accent key when the curser is to the right of the vowel I want to accent, but there doesn't seem to be a way to put a circumflex or a breathing marker on vowels. Does anyone know if there is a way to add the accents?

No, it wasn't under warranty, that's why they're being such a hassle I guess. I just want to either find proof against or for my case (being backlighting on my model is in the case or the keyboard) so I can either rest it or take them up on it. Right now, I have little to stand on, but still feel r-o.

  • Keyboard shortcuts from Greek Input not working for my account only

I just upgraded to Leopard from Tiger 10.4.11 on my MBP 2.4 listed below. The Installer took care of everything, and after it was finished, my own account, the only Admin account, misbehaves when it comes to keyboard shortcuts in the Finder or any other app. To use the shortcuts, the Input flag must US English. If it's Greek, nothing works.
If I switch to the other two accounts on my Mac, one of which was carried over from the Tiger setup, the other I setup after the OS upg, both of which are Std accounts, not Admin, shortcuts work regardless of the keyboard input flag.
    Tips, anyone?

    That's alright, folks, problem solved:
Ran Leopard Cache Cleaner, and selected from Caches the third option (deep clean).
Thanks, anyway. Hope this may help some other poor sod.

But the decided to take the greek keyboard off as I didn't use it often, so there was no point in having it. But I forgot to change my password, so I can't enter my Ipod. I've tried to enter the password in English and its not working! I don't really want to restart it all because I will loose everything! If anyone could help that would be great thank you.

  • No 3G iPhone support for Greek language/keyboard!

Last Friday, the very first day of appearance of iPhone in the greek market, I bought, from a greek Vodafone shop, a 16GB iPhone 3G.
It was quite a bad surprise and disappointment to me, when i realized that greek language was not included and supported in the international language and keyboard package of the device! That makes it the first mobile phone Vodafone provides to the greek market, without supporting greek language! When I mentioned that to Vodafone people, here in Athens, Greece, they blamed Apple for that problem. They said that a new firmware update is expected by Apple, and probably then the problem will be solved!!
So, ladies and gentlemen, is there any information about the availability of greek language/keyboard support for the 3G iPhone?
    Thank you for your time

    Hi,
I recently signed a contract with vodafone Greece for 46 € plan (one of the more expensive from the countries that the iPhone is available) in order to get an iPhone 3G 16GB for 430 € (also one of the highest prices of iPhone with a contract) only to find out that there is no Greek Keyboard. This is unacceptable. I don't care for which other countries you have made keyboard or not (although you make sure to rub it in my face) but the essence of the iphone is that it is a tool to have with you all the time and if the is no ability to right in your native language it is rendered useless. The think that is more frustrating is that those who bought the iPhone from abroad (at 1/4 of the price) and jailbroke it have a Greek keyboard, made by Greek hackers/programmers.
Today comes, as i am told the 2.1 firmware update and i sincerely hope that it has the Greek keyboard in it otherwise my (and many other i spoke with that bought the iPhone due to its features and not due to the Apple brand) loyalty to the Apple brand (which is already in bad shape due to the Greek retailer Rainbow) is going to be in jeopardy.
    please fix this

  • Create custom keyboard shortcuts

    1.  How do I create a custom keyboard shortcut so that I can toggle between two fonts, say, or two keyboards (English and Greek) quickly within a single document....
I am trying to make the switch fm msw to pages, but I cannot for the life of me locate these options.

    Feature unavailable for the fonts.
If you have only the two keyboard layouts available, there is a shortcut defined at system level to switch between them :
    command + space

  • When will Apple do REAL soft "international" keyboards on the iPhone?

Being a Swedish local, remembering the keynote with Steve Jobs making a big issue of using "soft keyboards" for international characters on the iPhone made my brain over-heat with disappointment when I finally got my iPhone 3G and entered "Swedish" under the keyboard settings hoping that a Swedish keyboard layout would appear on the iPhone's soft keyboard.
There is no Swedish (and possibly no other "international") keyboard on the iPhone although the settings are there. All there is is a possibility to enter "international" characters through an awkward point-hold-and-drag mechanism! These characters are being used all the time not only on those rare occations you need to spell out "Motörhead" correctly. What if you needed to click-hold-and-drag everytime you wanted to type an "a"?
Apple have had a few designs through the years that never should have left the office (remember the hockey puck mouse?) and this US-ASCII keyboard layout for "international" keyboards is one of the more ignorant ones - even more so since the facilities for making a proper layout is there.
(Another bug is the Map application assuming that the USA is the correct country for contacts in the address book where no country has been entered, instead of - for instance - using the country used for the keyboard settings as default country where none is explicitly entered or the country where the iPhone was activated?

i send this to apple as feedback under under enhancement request in case anyone is bored of typing:

  • Greek iPhone/iPod Touch OS

Firmware 2.1, The Greek iPhone/iPod OS is missing! Why?
I recently bought an iPhone from Vodafone-Greece for 600 € (One of the more expensive from the countries that the iPhone is available, also one of the highest prices of iPhone with a contract) only to find out that there is no Greek iPhone OS.
The iPhone is a tool to have with you all the time and if there is no ability to work in your native language, it is rendered useless.
That is more frustrating is that, those who bought the iPhone from abroad (at 1/4 of the price) and jailbroke it, have a Greek keyboard, made by Greek hackers/programmers.
But how many of us will buy an iPhone in those prices, only to realize that we have to hack it to get only a greek keyboard?
People in Greece need Greek iTunes, Greek MobileMe, Greek iPhone OS, Greek iPhone Keyboard, Greek Mac OS X! People in Greece already know how wonderful products iPhone and Mac are, but the lack of greek language, keeps them away!

You are absolutely right! It is only logical to request native keyboard for your phone. Let's not go back 10 years. So the sooner Apple provides some feedback on this the better (though Apple support in Greece has been really notorious).
Bad thing is I don't see too many related request. Do everybody write in greeklish. Rubbish!
Furthermore Vodafone who is the official retailer in Greece for iPhone should also pursue this issue on behalf of its customers and as a matter of minimum decency they should also make aware to whoever goes to buy an iPhone the fact that there is no Greek keyboard.
Bottom-line, I hope we see Greek support soon!

  • Can't log in; keyboard input screwy

All of a sudden, as I try to log in to my intel-based iMac running 10.5.8, the keyboard input doesn't work: some letters don't seem to input at all, while for others, striking one key results in two dots showing up in the log-in box. I get the same result from two different keyboards, so I don't think it's a keyboard issue. Any ideas?

Hello. Am running Snow Leopard on a new iMac and have a similar problem. While working normally, without even having system preferences open, the mouse stopped responded normally and open programs started to close and even though the keyboard input icon showed the US keyboard, the input was from a symbols keyboard with mostly Greek characters.
I made the mistake of shutting the machine down and now, instead of opening up to a window showing my three user choices, it shows only one of the three. It does show the keyboard icon and allows me to click and change, but the input remains in symbols even if I have chosen the US, Swiss French or Turkish input modes.
    So I cannot log in.
Shutting down, unplugging the keyboard, etc. does not help.
Can anyone give me a steer?
    Thanks.

  • [Solved]Ctrl+V not working in libreoffice on gnome(non-latin layout)

When using gnome-shell&libreoffice or calligra, universal keyboard shortcuts such as ctrl+v or ctrl+z don't do anything while on a non-latin layout(hebrew in my case).
If I want to paste something with ctrl+v I have to change layout to English and only then will it work.
Under MATE the shortcuts work fine regardless of the layout in both applications(and all others i have tried).
Under GNOME Shell all other applications I tried accept the shortcuts regardless of the layout(Firefox, gedit, Empathy, Nautilus)
Anyone has an idea as to what might cause this behavior when using GNOME?
    Thanks.
EDIT: Solved for libreoffice by removing the package "libreoffice-gnome". UI is not as pretty now but at least the keyboard shortcuts work.

After months of switching layouts and banging my head against this bug, I thought I should check LibreOffice settings (I'm using 4.1.5.3 now). What figures? I did find something. And in just a few clicks.
This is not a bug! It's simply a matter of configuration.
For the regular keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, etc.) to remain operational in LibreOffice applications while using a non-latin keyboard layout (like Greek or Russian), go to Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Languages, check the Ignore system input language option, save, and Bob's your uncle.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers!
    PS
Technically, though, shortcuts still remain language-dependent. This means if you enable this option, you will have to set your document languages manually.

  • How can I copy text from Pages and paste as Unicode?

I notice that if I write a Pages document on my iMac (this is Pages 09 running under OSX Mavericks 10.9.1) and copy text that contains characters from the "Mac Roman" character set (like the Greek letter pi for example, and some other mathematical symbols), if I paste it into a text file on a PC (I'm running the Mac with Windows via Parallels), then these characters don't show up correctly. If they were copied as Unicode characters then I don't think the problem would exist. I thought that Pages used Unicode, but it doesn't apparently apply to stuff that gets onto the Mac clipboard. I do know that if I export a whole Pages document it is possible for it to be exported in Unicode, but I just want to copy small bits of text like mathematical formulae and paste them into Unicode-compliant applications. Is this possible? There's nothing in the Pages Preferences to suggest that it is. Is there any solution to this?
    TIA

Tom, I'm sorry I think I have wasted your time. My initial experiments seemed to show that what I was trying to do didn't work, but now it all seems to work. No idea why. I think there is a problem somewhere, but not where I thought it was. I think what may be happening is that when the Mac clipboard sees some Mac Roman text, it converts and stores it in Unicode form, so things work as long as the receiving app is Unicode aware - or Parallels is doing the job for me, or Pages is. Good if this is true. The only issue then would be that, if a program for the PC is looking for characters by their encodings, it will have to use the Unicode ones to find things, whereas the equivalent code on a Mac will have to look for the Mac Roman encodings as well as Unicode.
Just to explain, I am not using a specialised mathematical formula editor, but I do expect my user to use the math symbols easily accessible on the Mac keyboard, particularly the Greek letter pi (lower case), division sign, less than or equal to, greater than or equal to, square root. The user can type text directly or paste it in from another application. On the PC side I am not using Microsoft Word but a program I'm developing that can create fields into which I can put text, similar I suppose to NotePad. Just to be able to be cross-platform, I expect users to use the built-in Windows Character Viewer or similar to make the same symbols accessible as in the Mac version.
If everyone was using Unicode the problem (if there is one) wouldn't exist.
I may well come back with a similar issue in the future, but my original issue, although the description was given in good faith, seems to be wrong. So I'm saying the problem is solved.

  • Unicode characters with accents won't display in Java Swing applications

I'm using FreeMind (a Java Swing application) and I need to enter classical Greek characters with accent marks. When I type an accented Greek character, FreeMind displays the unaccented character. However, I can type the accented character in MS Word, then copy and paste into FreeMind, the accented character appears.
One of the FreeMind developers indicated this was a Java Swing issue, not FreeMind, and suggested I test with another Swing application. So, I installed jEdit and got exactly the same results. I can paste an accented character into jEdit, but I cannot type it in directly.
I'm using Windows Vista with Java 6 Update 22 (build 1.6.0_22-b04). I also tested on a XP Pro box with Java 1.6.0_18-b07 and got the same result.
One other note: A couple days ago, I was able to type accented Greek characters into FreeMind. But it only worked for a couple days and then the behavior reverted to unaccented characters. It is possible, but I don't recall specifically, that I updated Java during the time and that may indicate a bug in one version of Java but not another.
Any assistance or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
    Darin

    Walter,
The link you provided does not appear to describe the Greek Polytonic keyboard. (The page also describes using the "Option" key as the dead key. There is no "Option" key on my keyboard. I'm using a Sony VGN-NS140E purchased in Chicago, i.e. standard physical US keyboard.)
Please see http://darindavis.net/languages/keyboard_Greek.pdf for a detailed description of how to use the Greek (Polytonic) keyboard in Windows to produce a complete set of accented classical Greek characters. This method works in MS Word and Notepad. I enabled the Greek (Polytonic) keyboard with:
Windows (Vista) Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Change Keyboards > General > Add > Greek (Greece) > Greek Polytonic
A test that will demonstrate whether you can replicate the error is to do the following in both MS Word (or Notepad) and jEdit (or FreeMind):
    1. Enable the Greek Polytonic keyboard
    2. Type "\" then "e" which should produce an epsilon with smooth breathing and grave accent (ἒ)
When I do this in MS Word or Notepad, I see the epsilon with smooth breathing and grave accent. When I do this in jEdit and FreeMind, I only see an epsilon.
I recorded a screencast to illustrate the problem: http://www.screencast.com/t/TRKkKQrCgbN
Actually, this problem is transient. Sometimes FreeMind or jEdit will display accented characters, other times it won't. Ironically, the first time I recorded the above referenced screencast, a few characters in jEdit did appear with accents. A couple minutes later, I re-recorded the screencast and as you can see jEdit did not display the accents. Between the two recordings I literally did nothing other than stop the Jing recording and start a new one. There is another variable at play here and I can't determine what it is. The most likely source seems to be Java since MS Word and Notepad consistently display accent characters.
    Thanks,
    Darin

  • G4 Cube not cooperating with me

    Dear Apple users,
I just took my Cube out of storage (probably 2 years) recently and now it's misbehaving. I just changed the small battery inside, updated all the neccessary OS updates & security updates.
Its running on 10.3.X (the latest) with more than enough Harddisk space and ample RAM.
    1. Everything I input on the keyboard shows as greek alphabets (ie. the Sigma thing, the slashed O, etc) instead of the familiar Roman ABCs. This prevented me from accessing websites. (System preference showerd keyboard input as English by the way).
    2. When I tried to install 10.4, the DVD reader can't read the disc. It just ejected it out of the slot again.
    3. I can't input any command in the terminal because of #1.
Please advice what steps I should probably take. Thank you in advance for any input!
    Regards

    Dear Tom
You are right! It turns out the culprit was the keyboard! One of the Option key must've been stucked! I changed keyboard today and everything is fine. Even did the Apple Hardware Test and thank goodness everything passed.
I realized now that new windows were opening because of the Option key. And weird characters appearing because of that too.
Now I am wondering how to clean the keyboard. I can't figure out where to open the keyboard and start cleaning. Do you have any suggestions? I rather do it myself than go to the Apple store.
    Thanks again Tom!

    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune (make sure you have the newest version of iTune)
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
