Keyboard cleaning after a spill

A couple days ago, flying back to school a flight attendant knocked over my apple juice onto my keyboard. I quickly shut it off, turned it upside down to let it drain out, and then used damp napkins to try to get all of it out. I waited a while, turned it back on and it works fine THANK GOD. However, a bunch of the keys that were spilled on are very sticky (especially the spacebar which is extremely aggravating). Does anyone have any suggestions on cleaning it before I must resort to paying for cleaning or repair?

In reality, the keyboard should be cleaned or replaced, and the computer inspected to be sure the juice did not penetrate any further. I don't know about MBP keyboards, but if it had happened to my iBook, I would take the keyboard out and rinse it thoroughly with deionized water until all traces of the juice were gone. I'd probably remove the keycaps to do this. Then I would let it air dry until it was bone dry, maybe setting it up with a fan blowing on it. But removing the MBP keyboard is a lot more involved than the iBook keyboard, and I don't even know if it's feasible to clean it this way. It may not be.

The airline should pay for whatever needs to be done. Even though you didn't get the name of the flight attendant at the time, you still have your flight information and the airline will know who was on duty then. It would be worth a call to the airline's customer service department. I would imagine that they have insurance for this sort of thing. I think calling them is worth a try.

T410 : keyboard problem after juice spill

Hi,
I have recently spilled some fruit juice (sweet and sticky) on my t410's keyboard. Here are the problems caused and the different steps I took to try and solve them :
1. Switched off the laptop, waited a day. Switched it back on. The laptop worked normally except for various keys, mostly in the first row of letters (qwertz...) that didn't work (didn't react when pressed), and others who were sticky and got stuck when pressed.
2. Took out the keyboard and soaked it in alcohol (normal alcohol as I couldn't find isopropil alcohol) to wash out the juice deposits. Wiped with towels, then let it dry half a day. Put it back in. It was worse than before, the power button seemed to be shorted or sth. The laptop could not be tuned on with the power button. It could be turned on using the fingerprint reader though. But then it had a strage behaviour, kept turning on and off on its own.
3. Took out the keybord again, removed all the keys, including the power/mute/volume... Sprayed it repeatedly with contact cleaner (Vistony brand, made in Peru) . Then let it dry.This didn't improve much.
4. Waited over the week end, tried again. Now the power button works. When I turn on the laptop, before it can boot, it beeps repeatedly and shows an error essage : "error 210 stuck key : 10". Using an external USB keyboard, I can press escape, and boot to Windows. But the laptop's keyboard is unreactive and there is a continuous beep (frequency of about 2 beeps per second, continuous). In the Lenovo diagnostix test for the keyboard, none of the keys work.
Is there anything I can do to try and recover the keyboard ? Or just buy a replacement ? If I could at least get rid of the beep, I could use the laptop at home with the external keyboard, until a solution if found to fix the laptop's keyboard.

I admire your determination to save your keyboard, but honestly feel it's time to part yourself from it and accept it has sadly departed and find a replacement.
An option would be to attach the system to a port replicator or mini-dock, which have power on switches, detach the internal keyboard from the mainboard and start the system from the port rep. or mini dock after attaching an external keyboard to either or your notebook. Not a good solution if you need to travel.
p.s. a port rep. or mini-dock will cost more than a keyboard.

Keyboard issue after coffee spill.

I've problem. I've spilled a bit of coffee (sugar+milk) on my W500's keyboard - (Enter key area). And now, there are such problems: After pushing keys: F5, F9, Backspace, backslash, Space the behaviour is like hitting the Enter. Could anyone help me please ?

please take the keyboard out of your machine and let it take a full bath in isopropyl alcohol.
Then dry it gently with a cold fan.

Keyboard repair after coffee spill??

I have an orig 15in MBpro onto which I spilled about a half a teaspoon of coffee (this time<g>). 3 of 4 arrow keys now don't work. Spills are not covered by AppleCare, and I have about 6 mos of AC to go which I don't want to void by opening up my machine.
Here is my plan.
1 Remove battery and pop off offending key tops
2 Apply 1-2 drops to key subsystem of
a) distilled water
or
b) 95% ethanol
3) Wiggle around the rubber key subsystem
4) Blow with hairdryer on low for (a) long time or (b) short time.
5) Start up and hope for best.
I assume the volatility of the alcohol is an advantage.
Will it damage parts?

You probably don't want to actually drop water onto the subsystem--you don't want to risk water getting deeper into the machine and carrying coffee with it maybe down to the logic board. Coffee is corrosive. It would be safer to use something like a Q-tip dampened with distilled or deionized water and clean up any residue. I would avoid using ethanol--it will attack some finishes. Isopropanol is more benign, but since water will dissolve coffee, I don't think alcohol would even be necessary. I would also just let everything air dry and avoid using any heat on it.
The alcohol might serve as a desiccant to help dry any traces of water, but if you should not be using that much water.
You want everything to be bone dry before starting up.
The keys may well not be working due to sticky residue which has dried below them. Removing this residue completely may well get them working again.
In my opinion, it is well worth attempting this sort of a repair on a keyboard. If something is busted, you don't have much to lose by trying to fix it. If you can't, then you always have the option of replacing the keyboard.

I have a MacBook that has a damaged keyboard and trackpad due to a milk spill. Does anyone happen to have an estimate on repairing that? I am able to use the device with my wireless keyboard and trackpad - but I was wondering how expensive it is to repair the damaged parts???

TBF: You may have been lucky enough not to cripple your MBP immediately with your spill, but a spill such as you describe will have left obvious traces if you ever need to take your machine in for a repair of any kind. And as soon as evidence of the spill is found, any chance of the necessary repairs being performed under warranty will be gone.
Taking the machine in now to be cleaned and have the greasy parts replaced will be expensive, but doing so may save whatever remains of your warranty. For a price, Apple will restore the machine to like-new condition, and at the very least, you will then have a 90-day repair warranty on it. If you have significantly more time than that remaining on your original one-year warranty, and especially if you've bought the extended AppleCare Protection Plan, it would probably be worth taking the machine in to a Genius Bar for a look-over. Ask whether, if you have Apple clean and repair the machine now, your new-computer warranty and AppleCare plan will be reinstated afterward or whether all you'll have is the short repair warranty from now on. If the spill will negate your warranty and AppleCare even if you have Apple clean it, then the cleaning probably isn't worth paying for. But if paying for the cleaning will get your warranty and AppleCare reinstated, it may be worth doing.

Troubleshooting Logic and I/O board on A1370 11" MB Air after wine spill

My wife spilled about 1/4 cup of wine on the keyboard of her MacBook Air. This is an A1370 (EMC 2471) 11" (Core i5 Mid 2011) model.
I have read the articles in this forum and others on what to do when you spill on one of these computers.
What I would like from this forrum is guidance/help/suggestions/best-guess on determining what I need to replace.
Here are the details.
Directly after the spill, she tells me that the computer turned itself off, and would not come back on - no lights, no start chime, nothing.
I immediately took the back off the computer and mopped up what I could without completely dissasembling the system because it was late at night.
The next morning, one of the kids tried to start the computer (ya, I know that's bad and don't know why the **** he did it but he did). He "fessed up" later and said that when he pressed the power button the keyboard lights came on and chimed then went off and that was it.
I proceeded to take apart the computer, removing the battery, logic board, I/O board, airport, HD, etc.
I noticed that there was wine stain on the logic board and the I/O board and other areas and cleaned it all up with isopropyl and Q-tips.
I then gave the logic board and I/O board a very thorough wash with a cleaning spray by MG Chemicals called "Safety Wash II". Basically alcahol.
I scrubbed the two boards thoroughly with a soft bristle brush for about an hour, then I soaked the entire board in isoproyl alcohol bath for 2 hours then sprayed and scurbbed again until I felt that I got all the wine off.
I did notice a small amount of "purble" on two of the tiny contacts for the LCD connection on the logic board but could not remove no matter how much scribbing I did. The two contacts were number 3,4 if you are counting from right-to-left when viewing the logic board from the bottom of the PC, with the fan to the right.
After a good dry with a hair dryer and letting it sit a few more hours I put it all back together, crossed my fingers, plugged in AC and pushed the power button -- nothing happened.
I had an orange light on AC adapter so I let it charge over night. The next day the AC light was green and the backlight on the keyboard was lit. Tried starting and still nothing.
I took the back off again and disconnected the battery then plugged in the AC adapter. At that point the fan started spinning and I got the start "chime" but nothing on the LCD.
I disconnected AC and plugged in battery and noticed the same thing.
Now whenever I disconnect AC chord and reconnect it I get the chime with fan starting but nothing more.
Also, the backlight on the keyboard stays on all the time and the fan runs all the time if the batter or the AC is connected.
So, I am wondering what I need to replace?
logic board?
I/O board?
keyboard?
all of the above?
Would appreciate guidance.

Zane is right, ....I used to repair laptops for years as well,.....diagnosing such things is FUTILE.
Lucky you there are are almost no parts IN the macbook Air. Its IO and Logic and thats really almost it.
Contact Apple for in shop full diagnosis and parts replacement,......youre not going to "diagnosis" nor "fix" it after a spill (without parts replacement) by any means.
Even if you had a BEST CASE spill.....corrosion and failure would ensue on average 7 to 20 days.......then kaput.
Spills turn the best computer repair person into what looks like (to the customer) dufus......WHY? ......because its a "spin the wheel and GUESS where ALL the liquid went"
replace A......works ok for a week.....whoops, ..........oh yeah, theres a couple drops under under a solder connection on part B........replace that....

Keyboard issues after upgrading to Leopard

Seems there's been quite a bit of discussion about this topic already but it's been confined to laptops and I haven't seen a solution yet. I'm seeing the same problems on a desktop computer using either a wireless or USB keyboard.
After upgrading to Leopard, my keyboard would occasionally stop responding to keystrokes. I have seen this happen on both an Apple USB keyboard and my Logitech wireless keyboard. With either keyboard, the letter and number keys would stop responding but keys like the CapsLock and Delete keys would still work. I have seen this happen when using Mac Office 2004 (Excel and Word) and Safari. With Excel, when the keyboard stops responding, if I click on a different cell, the keyboard comes back. I did update to 10.5.2 and I do have the latest version of the Logitech software but the problems still persist.
Strangely, I have only seen this happen on my MacPro but NOT my MacBook. There is a difference on how each machine was upgraded to Leopard though. On my MacBook, I did a clean install of Leopard on a new hard drive and then migrated my docs and apps from the old drive. On my Mac Pro, I did an upgrade installation over Tiger. Fortunately, I cloned my hard drive prior to installing Leopard so going back is an option and so is doing a clean install followed by a migration which is what I did on my MacBook.
Is there a fix for the keyboard problems? Am I going to have to downgrade back to Tiger?

Thanks for posting this. I thought I was alone in the universe. I have the problem with my mini, which came with Leopard installed. The USB keyboard will stop working in Word or Entourage ('04) and I have to close and reopen the document to get the keyboard going again. Thankfully, my mouse still works when this happens, so I can use it to close and save.
It seems to sometimes be triggered when I switch between applications, but I haven't been able to replicate it consistently. It is particularly bad when using find in Word. The find window will go dead and I have to close it and reopen it to do another search. (Though interestingly, I don't have to close the Word doc.)
It's irritating.

I tried all of the suggestions, sort of. I did not have alcohol wipes, but I did take alcohol and pour some ona white paper towel and then rolled the mouse touch ball aroound and that finally cleared up the problem. Just inverting it on paper did not do the reick, it needed some help with the alcohol. Of course the probelm is the debris that gets inside and it really needs to come out.
This is a huge problem for RIM devices users too.

Laggy keyboard even after 2.1 update

Is anyone still experiencing a laggy keyboard even after the 2.1 update? I'm still having problems when texting a typing emails...my keyboard just pauses and then will catch up.

Same as mate. Not as bad but the keyboard can't keep up with me.

I have a 2007 MacBookPro. Ever since I installed Mountain Lion, I intermittently lose the keyboard backlight after the computer sits idol all night. A reboot resolves the problem.

this is considered as Liquid spilt on the NB.
most likely not covered under the warranty.
please check if you have accidental damage warranty on the NB.
to confirm the Hard Drive is functioning follow the below steps
Shutdown the NB
press power button and keep tapping "F10" as soon as the power light comes on
it will take you to the Blue color screen where you cna see system setup
look for "Diagnostic" option and Press right arrow key to select it
you'll find Primary Hard Disk self test - press enter to run it
you will come to know if the Hard drive is functioning
Safety Note - Do not try to take out any internal parts other than battery and adapter

Im working on an assignment
"Consider the CarPark control problem from the lecture notes?(available online).
You are required to extend this example to model a car park having 400 spaces
and 3 entrances and 3 exits. This means 3 threads must be created to simulate
the arrival of cars at each entrance and a further 3 threads must be created to
simulate the departure of cars at each exit. Each thread should sleep for a period
of roughly 0.5s between each attempt to perform an arrival or a departure. The
program should terminate all threads (cleanly) after 180s and the current number
of spaces in the car park should be printed out, and the total number of cars that
have entered and left by each entrance and exit should also be printed out. The
aim of this is a rough check to determine if your code is correct."
So I have everything done and working but I am having difficulty with terminating the threads, it seems that thread.stop() doesnt work, and I think that thread.interrupt() should do it but Im not sure how?!
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

According to the API the correct way to do it now is setting the thread to null.
If you set your threads up correctly they will complete their processing and you can set them to null without interrupting them.
for instance.
in the run() method have a boolean value as an on/off switch.
while(on)
... do stuff
}It will continually run until on is set to false. It runs itself out and you can set the thread object to null and garbage collection handles the rest.
