  • Strange Keyboard Behaviour: Function Keys F1-F10 not accessable

I noticed couple a days ago that function Keys F1-F10 not accessable, neither with nor without fn.
Nothing special has been made lately on PowerBook, some days ago tested Universal Access.
    What could keep F1-F10 disabled?
BTW F11 and F12 are fully functional

I'm noticing a possibly related conflict: I use Universal Access Sticky Keys all the time (they are just handy). But I noticed after a few days working with my new intel MacBook that when I had sticky keys on the keyboard would be mapped weird: The qwerty keys would be correct up to the num lock keys, and they would be numbers. So they are like this:
    qwerty456*[]
    asdfgh123-'
    zxcvbn0,.+
After several days of removing preference panes and startup items with no success, I just started digging around in all the preferences I could think of that would effect the keyboard. I disabled the "use the f1-f12 keys" option and the keyboard behaved normally.
So, if you engage sticky keys AND have "Use the F1-F12 keys . . ." engaged you get this odd behavior.
However, I still have the function of the F-keys.
    Any ideas?

  • Setting up new keyboard with function keys

    Hi,
I just attached an older mac USB keyboard (from the G3 era) to my MacBook. It works fine, but I want to know how I can setup my function keys to change the volume, display brightness, etc. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I still don't know how to program in volume and brightness keys, but it doesn't look like anyone else does so I'll mark this as answered.

  • New Mac Keyboard - Remap Function Keys???

    Hi there,
I'd like to map the volume up, down and mute controls to F13, F14 & F15.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Wayne
PS - I'm running Leopard on a MBP

    Hello wg:
I have the new wireless aluminum KBs, so I do not have those function keys. However, I believe that those functions are not re-mappable.

  • Function keys on new wired keyboard for old iMac don't workdon't work

Apple replaced my original wired keyboard when keys had stopped working, but with the new wired keyboard the function keys don't work as the symbols on them indicate.  My concern is F10-F12 which are supposed to control volume.  F10 shows all open windows; F11 romoves open windowns from screen; F12 shows ttime, date, temperature, etc, like the top button on the mouse.  I have tried suggested ways to fix this through System Preferences, Keyboard/Mouse but none works.
Can anyone solve this problem for me?

I have the exact same problem.  My old keyboard unfortunately died after spilling fluid onto it.
I purchased the same keyboard today.
Everything works with it except I have the same problem as described here:  "

  • What happens to the function keys when i unplug the extended keyboard?

i use my laptop (12 function keys) with a wired apple aluminum extended keyboard (19 function keys). i assigned a few functions (screen shots mostly) to the upper function keys on the keyboard... f16-f19. but when i unplug the keyboard i'm not sure how to get those functions on the laptop keyboard.
what happens to those functions when the keyboard is unplugged? is there a way to map those functions to the keyboard so that they are re-assigned when it's unplugged?

    wilyliang wrote:
question still remains: do f16, etc., exist or can they be re-invented once the USB keyboard is removed (besides having to re-map the shortcuts each time)?
I haven't found a way, though there might be.
or even: is it possible to assign two different key combos/function keys to a single command/shortcut?
Now that depends on the application that's assigning the shortcuts. Some Microsoft and Adobe apps allow multiple shortcuts per function, I've taken advantage of those a few times myself. But cheaper apps often cut you off at one shortcut.

  • Function Key Settings

So I have a few programs where instead of the function keys controlling the screen brightness/volume/numlock etc etc, I actually need the function keys. I know I can go into system preferences and change it, but is there a way I can set a keyboard shortcut to switch on the regular function keys? If not, is there a way I can set certain programs to do so?

If you hold down the fn key (lower left corner of keyboard) the function keys will work as function keys, not the controls for various settings. Also, in system preferences (at least in Leopard), under Keyboard & Mouse, there is an option to make the function keys operate as such normally, and you would need the fn key to get the other function.

  • I have an iMac 8.1, OSX 10.6.8 with XP running in Boot Camp partition. My USB keyboard (MB110LL/A) was damaged by water. I ordered a new keyboard from the Apple Store. I was sent model MB110LL/B. Special function keys will not work in XP. Any Ideas?

I have an iMac 8.1, OSX 10.6.8, Boot Camp 3.2 running Windows XP. My original keyboard (MB110LL/A) was damaged by a water spill. I ordered a new one from the Apple Store. They sent me MB110LL/B, function keys need updated drivers (Boot Camp 3.3) which will only install if Windows 7 is installed. I have a large amount of older software that runs under XP but not Windows 7. The Apple support team basically said "too bad". If they replace a keboard model with a new model, they should at least make it backwards compatable or provide a Boot Camp update that will allow this model to work on older iMacs. Reloading Bootcamp 3.3 several times has no effect because it does not detect Windows 7. Any Ideas or help would be appreciated.

It is free. It is beta. It works well - I use it on mine and two PCs as well...
MS Security Essentials will no longer install due to compatibiliity issues - that is the idea of a beta - and the RC could be out in June.
Windows 7 doesn't work great on any Mac, or Apple drivers, fan cvontrol to manage heat, and other issues.
Put 8 in and get to know it, then when the RC comes out you'll be ready

  • MacBook Pro Keyboard Function Keys & Backlight Stopped Working

This is a repost of an older thread, however i am having the same exact problem and i know i am not the only one.
    Origionally posted by FIDO2010 -
"Problem: The keyboard function keys (i.e. screen brightness, audio volume etc.) and backlight no longer work in Windows 7 (64-Bit) running Boot Camp 3.x. I also had the identical problem with Windows Vista (64-Bit) running Boot Camp 2.1.
Oddity: When I first installed Windows 7 and Boot Camp 3.x (same with Vista and Boot Camp 2.1), the keyboard and backlighting worked perfectly for about 3 Shut-Down/Re-Starts.
Points of Interest: I use a Logitech MX Revolution 2.4GHZ mouse and a Microsoft Blue Tooth Presenter Mouse 8000 with this machine. When I had this problem running Vista 64-Bit and Boot Camp 2.1, I assumed the problem was created by installing the drivers for these mice (suspecting that the mouse drivers over-wrote the Apple keyboard driver); however, I installed NO mouse drivers when I deleted the Vista 64 Boot Camp partician and created the "fresh" Windows 7 (64-bit) / Boot Camp 3.x partician.
I have tried the obvious of un-installing/re-installing Boot Camp, running the Boot Camp driver in repair mode, and manually replacing the keyboard driver itself. None of which have worked.
    Solutions?"
Any insight will be greatly appreciated. this issue is driving me crazy. Must have installed windows a good 30-40 times in the past couple months. thank you

As you all are probably well aware, this exact problem has been asked on a countless number of discussion boards and each is answered with a different "solution." Quotation marks are necessary because the solutions suggested work for some users but don't work for others. So, in a way, I offer those who read this reply this same disclaimer. The following solution worked for me (for now!) but it may not work for you.
Just like those other users, my volume and brightness function keys on my Macbook refused to work after installing the latest Bootcamp updates and after restarting Windows 'x' amount of times. In addition, trackpad scrolling, which worked great after one of the updates, also did not respond.
Here's what I did to get them working again, and it's rather simple. Find the Bootcamp application in Windows. Mine was housed in Program Files but yours may located be somewhere differently. Right-click the application and select Open. In my case the screen went black and the resolution downgraded to 800x600 or lower when the images on the screen returned so keep this in mind if or when you attempt this. The screen is significantly cropped so you may have trouble navigating to the Control Panel to fix the resolution to your liking. Anyway, now my brightness and volume function keys and trackpad scrolling work properly.
I should mention one or two more bits of information before I sign off. To start, I cannot say if this trick continues working after restarting Windows. Also, I do not know if this process is something you have to perform everytime you run Windows. In any case, let the world know if this or any other solution fixes this stated problem for you.

  • Tecra A3 Keyboard Function keys and Microsoft Comfort Keyboard

I have a Tecra A3 and are using it with a Microsoft Comfort keyboard. The problem is that ever since the keyboard drivers have been installed the function keys (i.e. Fn + F2 to change power mode) now carry out additional funcitons i.e Fn + F2 also brings up the My Pictures folder. The strangest on is turning the wirelss network card on or off with the switch on the front of the notebook. This has the additional effect of loading an extra copy of MS Outlook each time it is swithed.
I have the latest version of Microsoft IntelliType Pro (version 5.20.412.0)
Any idea on how to solve this?

    Hi
Sorry but you have not explained do you have this problem now using notebook keyboard or external one.
If the problem persists using an external one I think that you can not use Toshiba FN+FX key combinations. Every external keyboard is specific one and in my opinion you should check users manuals and check also all additional functions. I am also pretty sure that you are able to configure some special keys on your own.
The issue with WLAN switcher is very strange. Try to remove Microsoft specific software and check if the functionality is like before.

  • Function keys no longer working with a new keyboard...

I got a new keyboard and my function keys no longer work with it.  I am used to have them used in the standard format, i.e. F10-F12 control the voume, etc.  I have the "Use all f1,f2, etc." button clicked.  I have also tried restarting my computer.  Any thoughts?

Try doing a SMC reset and PRAM reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • I have a Macbook Air that had some coffee spilled on the keyboard and as a result the plus/equals key is no longer functioning. Can I use a program like Ukelele to reprogram a different key to be my plus/equals key? Can I program a function key? key

I have a Macbook Air that had some coffee spilled on the keyboard and as a result the plus/equals key is no longer functioning. Can I use a program like Ukelele to re-program another key to do that function? Can I re-program a function key to do this function?

Water + electronics do not mix.  Something was damaged insode, and the logic board may be corroding as is.
Take it to a Genius Bar for an evaluation and repair estimate.
This is accidental damage and not covered by warranty.

  • Wireless keyboard function keys don't work even though updated

    Hi,
like i read in different threads, many others had this problem too.
The function keys of my bluetooth keyboard (aluminium 2009) don't work even though i did firmware update for mighty mouse AND the keyboard firmware update. I also unset the option 'use function keys with fn......' option in system preferences. I also tried disconnecting and connecting the device. In system profiler the entry says it is (still) firmware version 80.
    What can i do?
    I'm thankful for any hint.
    Best, Jörg

wrote this in another thread, but it is relevant here, too.
Wanting to buy a keyboard and reading this thread (and others), I went to a local Best Buy. They had quite a few of the wireless keyboards out. They had MC184LL(A) models and (B) models.
ALL of the (A) models worked perfectly with the iPad (typing, brightness, volume, ipod functions, etc).
NONE of the (B) models worked other than basic typing.
They had a stack of maybe 50 new wireless keyboards on the shelf. All but two of them were (B) models.
I bought one of the two (A) models. It is working perfectly on my iPad.

  • How do you reset the special keyboard function keys?

I used to use an older external keyboard that had Dashboard as F4. Now I got a newer keyboard that has Launchpad as F4. I was used to the old way, so I went into the keyboard shortcut for Dashboard and set it as F4. To my disappointment, however, it only works when I hold 'fn'. (I didn't expect this, as when the key was set to F13 holding fn wasn't required.) So anyway, that is even worse, and I wanted to change it back. However, it wouldn't let me. (In Launchpad & Dock > Keyboard Shortcuts, there used to be a checkmark next to Show Launchpad with a blank area on the right, but now when I try to click Restore Defaults, it forces me to choose a key... and pressing F4 without holding fn doesn't register.) And I know I can make it use all function keys as standard function keys, but not just for F4. And if I do it for all of them, I lose the other keyboard controls and I don't want that. I don't want to have to be stuck with the FunctionFlip 3rd party tool forever... How can I actually reset they key (or ideally, make it bring up dashboard without holding down fn)? You'd think that if it's so simple to change a setting one way it would be simple to change back. I'd even delete some prefs file if i had to.

I figured out that if you remove the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist file and restart, that restores the keyboard.
Second question: Is there any way to make F4 (without holding fn) bring up Dashboard on Lion that doesn't require FunctionFlip? If it matters, I have a Time Machine backup of the symbolichotkeys.plist file from when I had the older keyboard.

  • How do you get the Apple Wireless Keyboard to accept function keys?

I use the Apple Wireless Keyboard with my iPad2 and I use the VPN to connect to my work-related software which requires that I use some of the function keys as actual F1, F2, F3,...etc.  When I hit F2, the iPad2 responds with the Screen Brighter action.  How do I get the keyboard input to just be F2?  Thanks!
    Jeff Lehmer

Thanks. But I tried that and nothing happens.  I've looked though all the System Preferences sections and can't find anything on this.
