Keyboard equivalents...RANT warning

...rant on...
Why, oh, why oh why do the keyboard equivalents appear to be diverging when it comes to Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom? What on earth are the Lightroom Wizards trying to accomplish by choosing keyboard commands which have little or nothing to do with Photoshop/ACR?
Decisions like this are arbitrary, at best and stupid at worst.

  • MBP Keyboard equivalents for PC Keys?

    Not sure where to post this question (OSX or here) so here goes for starters.
    Are there standard MBP keyboard combinations that perform the functions of certain 101-key dedicated keys? Such as PageUp/Down, Home/End, (PC) CTRL+Home, CTRL+End, etc? I feel like I've stumbled onto a few, yet there are times (in Safari or some Mac apps) where I can't seem to move as efficiently, using the keyboard, as I was accustomed to on my PC. (I realize key combos could vary by software applications---just looking for any "typical" or fairly standard Mac key combos for easier page/screen/spreadsheet navigation.)
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the link, RK... lots to absorb, and hopefully some of those might be applicable in other applications. Perhaps it really comes down to which software programs I'm using, and what the developers of those programs created as shortcut commands, since it seems that some don't handle the same keyboard combinations the same way as other programs...
    (As an aside, I'm baffled why the various menus (such as Safari) still give keyboard shortcuts by symbol such as \-, for the Option Key, when in fact the MBP no longer prints all the Mac symbols on the keys themselves! (Just the cloverleaf on Command.) So you need a cheatsheet to remind you which Apple symbol belongs to fn, control, option, in order to then try and memorize the shortcut! Still, don't get me wrong---I'm thrilled with my year-old switch to Mac!)

  • Problem with field declaration - rant warning

    <rant>
    Ok, I'm headed back to JBuilder, for EJB's anyway!
    I've got some fairly large tables I'm trying to build EJBs for, CMPs mainly.
    I blithely crank up workshop, open my project and build a new CMP from
    table.
    Everything is proceeding alright, oh, but look, its declared that my Oracle
    Number fields, currently 38 place integers,
    more or less, as java longs, theres a mismatch for ya, I'll just fix it...no
    prob, just redeclare it as a BigDecimal or BigInteger and
    we're all happy. Hm, it didn't redeclare the ejbCreate, no prob though, I'll
    delete it and it'll pick up the change.
    Um, nope, doesn't pick up the change, just get nice little dialog asking me
    to send the bug report to BEA.
    Ok, lets put things back and make all the changes manually. There, no
    problems there, well except that when
    I try to build the project it tells me I've got a duplicate class
    declaration in the project..of course, I don't, but
    don't try telling workshop that..it knows better.
    Ya, I know that it'll be a long time till it fails if I just leave it as the
    default Long, hell, possibly til I'm retired, but then
    again, I was, as many of you were, here for y2k, and I just don't want to
    leave that kind of mess around. That kinda crap
    keeps me awake at night, and with a 3 year old boy I need all the rest I can
    get.
    So, I'm toddling back to JBuilder, I can't do all your portal stuff in
    there...yet, but it works.
    Thats worth paying money for.

    Question: My computer shuts down while I am pausing briefly during use.. first display drop down box "RESTART, SLEEP, CANCEL, SHUTDOWN" warns me of shutdown coming.. If I do not hit cancel immediately, computer shuts down and I have to employ start up procedure each time.. very annoying.. • Can i remap a button on the keyboard? (trying to support copy/paste on mac)

    my app runs cross-platform, and on the mac os x, copy/pasting is accomplished via ctrl+c/v, when the native os wants to use cmd-c/v. (ie in order to copy from a browser and paste into my java app, the user would have to press cmd-c to copy from the mac environment and then ctrl-v to paste into the java environment.)
    i'd like to have copy/paste behave the way mac users are expecting (pressing cmd vice ctrl). at the moment, my app supports OS functions like cmd-w (close window), cmd-q (quit), and cmd-h (hide) via a few import classes from apple. they neglect to provide the same support for copy/pasting.
    so. how can i init my java environment so that if a user presses the cmd key, java behaves as if they are pressing the ctrl key?
    thanks!

    ok, tested it. seems that under metal and the L&F i'm using (which is based on metal as far as i know), pasting is accomplished via ctrl-v.
    if i set the L&F to the system L&F while running in a mac os, pasting is accomplished via cmd-c (meta-c?).
    so that's that.
    i asked google for help with the shortcutKeyMask, and this turned up on an apple site:
    Accelerators (Keyboard Shortcuts)
    Do not set menu item accelerators with an explicit javax.swing.KeyStroke specification. Modifier keys vary from platform to platform. Instead, use java.awt.Tookit.getMenuShortcutKeyMask to ask the system for the appropriate key rather than defining it yourself.
    When calling this method, the current platforms Toolkit implementation returns the proper mask for you. This single call checks for the current platform and then guesses which key is correct. In the case of adding a Copy item to a menu, using getMenuShortcutKeyMask means that you can replace the complexity of The Contents of an Application Bundle with the simplicity of Listing 2.
    Listing 1  Explicitly setting accelerators based on the host platform
    JMenuItem jmi = new JMenuItem("Copy");
        String vers = System.getProperty("os.name").toLowerCase();
        if (s.indexOf("windows") != -1) {
           jmi.setAccelerator(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_C, Event.CTRL_MASK));
        } else if (s.indexOf("mac") != -1) {
           jmi.setAccelerator(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_C, Event.META_MASK));
    Listing 2  Using getMenuShortcutKeyMask to set modifier keys
    JMenuItem jmi = new JMenuItem("Copy");
    jmi.setAccelerator(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_C,
        Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getMenuShortcutKeyMask()));
    The default modifier key in Mac OS X is the Command key. There may be additional modifier keys like Shift, Option, or Control, but the Command key is the primary key that alerts an application that a command, not regular input follows. Note that not all platforms provide this consistency in user interface behavior. When assigning keyboard shortcuts to items for menu items, make sure that you are not overriding any of the keyboard commands Macintosh users are accustomed to. See Apple Human Interface Guidelines for the definitive list of the most common and reserved keyboard shortcuts (keyboard equivalents).
    okay... but uh... i don't quite get it. seems that this Listing 2 solution might work, but a) this is for a menu and b) i'd like this to be a global setting if at all possible. my concern is when i use something like this:
    JOptionPane.showInputDialog(jframe,
                                              "please enter some text",
                                              "input dialog",
                                              JOptionPane.OK_OPTION);i want this to be paste-able too!
    thanks!

  • Keyboard short cut for movie/audio preview

    I want to go through a large collection of audio files (several thousand files) and the simplest way I've found to check out their contents has been to use the finder's preview column. However, it is still rather clunky, requiring a lot of mousing and clicking (click to select file, click in the preview column to play the preview, mouse back to previous column and click to select new file, etc.)
    What I want to know is whether there is a keyboard shortcut to activate the preview play. If, for instance, the shortcut was Space (as in the QT Player) then I could quickly move down and preview a long list of audio files with a combination 'Cursor down' and 'Space'.
    But Space (as, I suppose, it should) simply jumps to the top of the list of files, rather than playing the preview.
    Is there a shortcut or a hack for this?

    1101/3547
    Hi Rick,
    There may be an even faster solution, but here, that's what I'd try:
    Using the finder's preview column,
    replace all the clicking and mousing with the keyboard equivalents, that is:
    - "click to select file": navigate through the folders in column view with the arrow keys.
    - "click in the preview column to play the preview": hit command-O (+ command-W, not at all urgent but if you mind the mess on the Desktop).
    - "mouse back to previous column": arrow back.
    (of course you knew the Applications Switcher (command-Tab) is set to get you back the previously used app, in you case the Finder..)
    - "and click to select new file": arrows etc.
    Select all:
    Also, what happens if you select all your sound files before hitting command-O?
    In Preview this one too is very handy.
    Mousing simple:
    There is another way of mousing that may be simpler, because it is one simple mouse back and forth travel between the files and the Dock, with no clicking:
    Just drag the file directly onto the Dock icon of the application that opens them. It doesn't matter if soon your Desktop is cluttered with dozens of open files. Use option-command-W from time to time or even quit the app.
    Hope this helps a little.

  • Wireless Keyboard Low Battery Indicator

    I just purchased a new HP Touchsmart 300-1017 PC.  I got the "Low Battery Indicator" message for the wireless keyboard after taking it out of the box so I put new batteries in.   Now, two weeks later, I got the same message.  How long should the batteries last?

    I get that keyboard batteries low warning on my screen sporatically.  I just click it away since I know the batteries are too new to need changing.

  • Any way to create a keyboard shortcut for keywords in Bridge CC?

    Just curious if there's any way to create a keyboard shortcut for "new keyword" and "new sub keyword" in Bridge CC?
    If not, that would be a welcome addition in any future Bridge update - being able to customize keyboard shortcuts or add your own the way you can in Premiere Pro CC.

    Steve,
    Not, as far as I know, directly, but the problem is with Aperture, not Keyboard Maestro.  Aperture has no command (afaik) for selecting the caption field of the Info Inspector.  Without a command, you will have to find another way to access it, or another way to accomplish what you want.
    You can specify the spot clicked by screen coordinates, so you cold use the Inspector HUD and the coordinates of the Caption field, as long as the Inspector HUD always pops up in the same location.
    Many dialog boxes allow the user to advance through the fields with the Tab key.  Unfortunately, the number of times you have to type "{Tab}" in order to get to a particular field depends on other interface elements (if the Control Bar is showing, add 2).  I don't know of a way to determine if the Control Bar is showing.
    You might find a work-around using a Metadata Preset and the Batch Change command.  Keyboard Maestro can easily pop up a dialog with a text field in which you can type what you want to go into Aperture's Caption field.
    The best thing to do is download the trial version and see if it meets your needs.  Keyboard Maestro is adept at creating macros based on keyboard input.  If the program does not provide keyboard equivalents, writing an effective macro becomes difficult.
    http://www.keyboardmaestro.com/main/
    The author provides exemplary documentation:
    http://wiki.keyboardmaestro.com/About_Keyboard_Maestro
    Lastly, for the use you cite, I simply show the Inspector if it's not showing (by typing "i"), change to the Info tab if it is not currently activated (by clicking, but note that opening the Inspector with the Info tab selected can be done with one command "View➞Inspector➞Info"), and then clicking in the Caption field, which is part of all of the Metadata Views I regularly use.
    HTH.  Perhaps one of our programming mavens will suggest something better.

  • Apple Keyboards with Mac Mini

    Hi guys.
    I had a Mac Mini for some time and it was my first encounter with mac system and I must say I looooooooove it!
    I just bought my apple keyboard cauz before I was using a normal PC keyboard. However I think there r some buttons not working. Aren't the "apple button" supposed to do something?
    Also I find on the top under finder help that the shortcut is the square button with the ? button but when I press those two, nothing happens. Any help????
    And one more thing... what's with the backlight feature that I found in system preferences, does the apple keyboard have a backlight in it???
    Thank you in advance and sorry for the dumb newbie questions...
    Carol

    Hi Carol,
    (In addition to Rob's excellent answer)
    The Apple key is well known as the Command key.
    Keys equivalents are easy to remember, but the general Mac behaviour is to use the Command key where Windows usually uses Control.
    Keyboard Equivalents:
    <table border=0><tr><td>Mac OS</td><td>    </td><td>  </td><td>    </td><td>Windows</td></tr><tr><td>Control key</td><td>    </td><td>⌃</td><td>    </td><td>Ctrl key</td></tr><tr><td>Option key</td><td>    </td><td>⌥</td><td>    </td><td>Alt key</td></tr><tr><td>Command key</td><td>    </td><td>⌘</td><td>    </td><td>Windows key</td></tr></table>
    Those articles too are going to help you forget Windows habits :
    - USB: Third Party Keyboards May Not Have Command, Option Keys
    - What's it called on my Mac?
    Enjoy your new keyboard!

  • Key equivalents

    Anyone come up with a solution for the fact that keyboard equivalents shown in the Keyboard System Preferences pane don't all exist on the small Bluetooth keyboard?  I started just looking for a Move to Trash shortcut, since they symbol given in Lion's Finder doesn't exist on this keyboard but when I looked at the Keyboard System Preferences, I discovered all sort of things I can't do, such as some requiring Function Keys higher than F12.

    I use Type-It-4-Me for multiple clipboards and the use of Command keys in that program often confuses the issue.
    One alternative: You can reassign keyboard commands for the Type-It-4-Me application, which won't clash with Safari's use of the command 1 etc. keys. You would do this in System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts Panel.
    Go to the bottom of the panel to Application Keyboard Shortcuts>All Applications. Select the + to create a new command. In that panel go to the top drop down box (applications) and navigate to the Type-It app. Then, create your new keyboard commands for the application.

  • Date/Calendar Rant

    **Rant Warning!**
    Java is my language of choice, but the whole Date/sql.Date/Calendar junk is horrid. I can't seem to get/keep any of that straight in my mind. To quote van der Linden's "Just Java" book, "It's a dumb approach: it makes the common case of simple date processing un-obvious. But at least Yak-herders in Syria can now use Java to calculate their birthday under the Babylonian calendar."
    **Rant Complete**
    Anyone know of an alternative date class somewhere that is simpler, more-straightforward, or designed to accomodate the common case? If not, maybe I'll write one, make it available to all java developers, and alleviate the suffering out there!
    Mike

    I wrote some code for handling dates as integers (the way many spreadsheets do it), it is in the JCommon class library (free subject to the terms of the GNU LGPL):
    http://www.object-refinery.com
    I know of a shareware (US$10) class called BigDate (better than the code I wrote, but not free) that you can find somewhere at:
    http://www.mindprod.com
    Hope that helps,
    Dave Gilbert
    JFreeChart Project Leader
    P.S. I still use Date and Calendar for a lot of things, because they are very powerful. It's just that sometimes I only want the date, not the time down to milliseconds as you get with the java.util.Date class.
