Keyboard features unresponsive

I just got my mac book pro yesterday, and everything has been great! But now my keyboard features (F1-F10) aren't working at all. They did work until I adjusted "spaces" and "expose" and I guess those override the original functions? I undid what I adjusted and they still don't work. I can't control my volume or brightness via keyboard now. This is my first mac, I've used one in Animation class frequently but I'm fairly new. I haven't been careless with my new mac, I've hardly touched anything so I have no idea what I did wrong.

Welcome to the Forums!
They will likely work if you press the fn key (bottom left) in combination with the F1-10 keys. The setting is in System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab, "Use F1, F2 etc as standard function keys". Uncheck that box. If that doesn't solve your problem, post back.
Hope this helps...

  • Sometimes my keyboard becomes unresponsive when using Photoshop CS6, & I have to restart

Since I upgraded to Photoshop CS6, I've found that every once in a while the keyboard becomes unresponsive.  I can't tell whether anything specific that I'm doing triggers it, but I'll be editing an image and will press a shortcut key and find it doesn't work. It doesn't happen when I first open up an image, but usually after I've been working for a while. As far as I can tell (it's pretty random) it seems to happen when I'm using a tool to apply an effect to an image, like this last time it happened when I'd been using the Spot Healing Brush repeatedly on a photograph. (Of course that could be correlation without causality, since I'm a big fan of the Spot Healing Brush and tend to use it quite a bit whenever I'm editing photos). Note that the modifier keys still function, but all of the letter and number keys are unresponsive.
Sometimes - and lately it seems like it happens always, there's a sound associated with the shut off.  It's possible that the times I didn't hear the sound I had my speakers off.  It's a brief clicking noise - and I don't think it's any of the built-in alert sounds on my Mac, since I just listened to all of them and I recall this sound being different - but the sound is definitely coming from my speakers and is not a mechanical sound from the machine.  I have no idea what might be causing this. I saw someone complaining of this a couple of years ago, who thought it might have to do with a Wacom tablet. I own one, but don't always use it, and this happens even when I'm not using it.  The only way I've found to get my keyboard responding again is to shut down Photoshop and restart.
I'm on a Macbook Pro, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, with 8GB Ram; I'm on OS X 10.7.4 (not quite ready to upgrade to Mountain Lion).

Okay - it looks like I've solved my own problem after a few hours searching for related problems on the web.  It's not a problem with Photoshop but with Mac OS X.  The default "Universal Access" mouse and trackpad preferences were set to "Press the Option Key five times to turn Mouse Keys On or Off." So when I use a tool that I'm modifying with the option key, and I use it repeatedly five times in a row, I hear the clicking sound that means turn on "Mouse Keys" (and turn off the regular keys). Turn off that option, and the problem is solved!

  • Anyone notice that your keyboard is unresponsive after hibernate?

I've been noticing lately that my keyboard is absolutely unresponsive after I come back from a suspend that led to a hibernate. That is to say, suspend ... if batteries dies or you remove it it leads to hibernation... so when I power back (from hibernation) the trackpad works fine but the keyboard is unresponsive. Capslock light doesnt work either. Only solution I found is to reboot (using the trackpad) and all is okay.
Anyone else able to reproduce this?

'Deep Sleep/Hibernation' doesn't happen automatically when the battery goes flat, that's just normal hardware sleep ... any key/mouse click (once MagSafe power applied) will wake from that. The Power button is required for 'wake from Deep Sleep' (and you will see the vram software image loading with the Desktop greyed out)

I have installed OS using different Microsoft discs or recovery USB medias and all you must do is to click most of times on NEXT button.
If keyboard works under BIOS and Windows I don't see any problem with keyboard there.
    just to be clear:-
    power up machine
    Press F12
    Selected CD/DVD boot option
    Inserted microsoft os disc
    Return
Message " Press any key to boot from cd...."
    Press return.
The Cursor then just sits there Flashing,no keys work ,not even CTRL-Alt-Del.
Only option left is Switch off.
If I don't press a key when prompted then the system loads the os on the hard disc.

  • Characters on keyboard edges unresponsive

I am finding the characters at the edges of the keyboard are unresponsive, especially now that I have the phone in a protective sleeve. Anyone experiencing the same thing?

Go to system preferences/keyboard/input sources and make sure only the layout you want to use is showing there.
If you give some examples of keys which produce wrong characters, we can probably tell you just what input source you need to choose.

  • Help!! My x button on my keyboard is unresponsive sometimes!!

I have a Lenovo X220 laptop.  It works great except for one problem:
I don't know why, but the x button on my keyboard is unresponsive.  There is nothing that hinders it, it's just that sometimes when I press it, it does not work.  I usually have to press it repeatedly until it works again.  And, as a current student, it gets annoying typing papers and having to repeatedly press a button, as it slows down my progress (I'm a pretty fast typer).  There's no junk below the key, which is why I'm so upset.
Any help would be welcome, thanks!!

Sounds like the "x" key is faulty.  If you still have some warrantee time left Lenovo support will mail you a keyboard which is very easy to replace.  If no warrantee you should be able to pick up one a a good price from Ebay for around $30-$40.  If you purchase from from Lenovo (actually IBM) it will cost $63 + shipping.
There is one more thing you can try.  Remove the keyboard, carefully pop the "x" cap off and put one drop of isopropyl alcohol on the the "x" and press the key repeatedly.  This technique was much more effective with older keyboards but sometimes works on newer one.  Just be very gentle when you pop the "x" cap off as you only want to remove the cap and not the mechanism below it.
    Good luck

  • My mbp's keyboard is unresponsive. None of the buttons work except for the light for caps lock. The trackpad also doesnt click but i can move the cursor.

My mbp keyboard is unresponsive. I cant type anything but the caps lock key light turns on. My trackpad cursor moves but does not click. Any fix?

Try an SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

    Hello Redragonfly,
If you can't see the onscreen keyboard on your iPad, restart the device.  If you were previously using a wireless keyboard with your iPad, turn bluetooth off to troubleshoot.

  • Keyboard/trackpad Unresponsive during Windows 7 Install

I have spent days scouring online forums troubleshooting issues that have arisen at virtually every step of the process. There seems to be a whole slew of issues people are having in addition to my own.
I had to try many workarounds to resolve the issue where Boot Camp 5 gets confused over whether you are installing the 32 or 64 bit version. Really dumb stuff... that should never have released in such a disjointed state.
You shouldn't have to hack such massively mainstream products just to get them to work. I have a job! But installing Microsoft apps is a full-time job itself. Are they out to lunch? Did Apple completely shut down? From what I'm reading they appear completely disengaged from their products. Tons of threads over tasks that should be simple. The slightest variation derails the installation process. It various from mac machine models, right side usb ports vs left side ports. This is a very expensive and time consuming joke being played on us consumers.
    I am now CURRENTLY stuck.....
I have a new MacBook Pro 15" retina. I finally ran Boot Camp successfully and I downloaded the Apple Support Software although its location is a mystery. I get stuck at the very first installation window (Windows 7 Premium) asking to select the language. My keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive. I am NOT talking about wireless devices which is an issue flooding other threads.
I have to hold down the power button to get out of it. And after a couple of attempts the entire 5-hour long Boot Camp installation get undone and my Windows designated partition returns to being empty. Is there no pride in their work? Why burden their customers with their problems? Is their only demographic mac geniuses?
I have Windows 7 on dvd which I put on a thumb drive after learning how to convert it to an ISO image, a step MS is apparently too lazy to do.  It took only an hour to do but a full day do discover what the problem was.
None of this would even be an issue if I didn't need Windows. Apple used to be able to run anything on its own. What happened?

    Hi Craig,
Apple advice is to use USB-connected keyboard and mouse during installation of Windows.
+"The drivers for your wireless mouse and keyboard are not installed yet, so you cannot use them. The use of a wired mouse and keyboard is required to install Windows. Once your installation is complete, you can install the Apple Windows drivers off your Mac OS X DVD. Then, pair the wireless mouse and keyboard to your system using the Bluetooth Control Panel."+

Any PC- or Apple- USB keyboard/mouse should work.
If you don't have such try to borrow from a friend or colleague.

  • Keyboard Shortcut Unresponsiveness

Greetings potential allies in my fight against minor inconveniences!
I recently acquired a MacBook Pro after having endured years of Windows use, and am enamored with it. I am especially fond of the Exposé and the View Desktop keyboard shortcuts. Unfortunately, due to the default hardware mapping of all of the F# keys, Exposé must normally be accessed through Fn+F9. This is especially troublesome for my hands to reach, and limits my ability to instantaneously impress users of other operating systems. Thus I desired to change my shortcuts, and as I have no reason for a Dashboard keyboard shortcut, I hoped I could swap the defaults for the two functions (Dashboard to F9 and Exposé to F12, which lacks any hardware association). I did just this in system preferences, and all works fine. However, when I shut down my computer and reboot, the shortcut for "All Windows" magically reverts back to F9--a most grievous problem. No matter which key I map "All Windows" to, it always defaults back upon reboot or log out to F9. This is untrue of all other shortcuts, as I can change any other default successfully--so I am baffled.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is one of very few problems which mar an otherwise flawless system.
    Many thanks!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

One thing you might consider trying is to invert the function of the fn key. This is controlled by the "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features" checkbox, which when ticked means that you no longer need press the fn key at the same time as the F9-F12 keys. Of course, to alter brightness, volume etc. you must then press the fn key, but this is usually less of a problem as the relevant keys are well to the left making them easy to span with a single hand.
As for retaining the change, I have not encountered this problem, but you could try deleting the User—>Library—>Preferences—>com.apple.systempreferences.plist file and subsequently resetting your preferences.
In any case, shutting down and restarting a computer is a Windows habit—there's little or no point in doing this on a Mac. When in "sleep" mode, the machine uses almost no power at all. I regularly have machines running continuously for 10 weeks or more!
    Hope this helps,
    Archie

  • Ios 8 keyboard features

I just wanna ask why is it that the new feature of iOS 8 on the keyboard on my iPad 2 isn't working? The feature that when you swipe your fingers into the letters, it will type it. Thanks.

Do you mean so you can type without lifting your finger ? If so it sounds like the Swype app that you need to download.

  • Missing keyboard feature...in email and sms?

If I hold my iPhone sideways while in Safari and then want to type in a new URL, the keyboard pops up. This is a much larger keyboard, since it is sideways not to mention I feel safer holding it while typing with both hands. Faster too!
Why does this not work in email or SMS? I assume it is a missing feature, or is there a trick to get it to work?
    Thanks.
    joy...suzanne

Dunno, but tons of people have asked for it and discussed it since the phone was introduced. So that makes it even more difficult to understand why they haven't addressed it in all that time. Seems like such an easy fix especially since it already does it in Safari... It REALLY aggravates a lot of people because if you are a heavy email or sms user, the regular keyboard is very tough to use and hold when typing, and the Safari landscape keyboard is light years better.
On this forum all anyone ever says is you can suggest the enhancement, but I'm just hoping we'll see it in the v2 software, or as an add-on by some developer. If not, I'm really puzzled.

  • New keyboard features on old MacBooks?

Does anyone know a way to use the features of the new MacBook keyboards (i.e. the same ones as the aluminum Apple keyboards) with old MacBooks?

My question, I guess, then, would be if I can reconfigure the function key mapping so that it matches the new aluminum Apple keyboards: F1 and F2 are brightness, F3 is Exposé, F4 is Dashboard, F7-9 are iTunes controls, and F10-F12 are volume.

  • Black screen - Keyboard illuminated - unresponsive

I'm on a macbook pro 15" 2.66 Core i7. About once a day my laptop freezes resulting in the following symptoms:
    100% black screen
Keyboard Illuminated and unresponsive (for instance caps lock won't light up when pressed)
No mouse arrow or any graphical output.
This seems to happen randomly. I've been typing emails when it happened. I've simply returned to it after making tea and it's frozen. I've been working in Photoshop etc. Basically whether I have 10 or 1 application running it randomly occurs. I've had it happen with the power connected and with the power disconnected.
Closing the lid makes no difference. The power light remain illuminated and doesn't enter the "breathing" mode.
    Things to note:
I never ever have a mouse connected.
Heres a console output at the time of the crash (you can see the time before and after)»

So I'm pretty much sure what was causing this for me. I had a twitter feed app installed called Tweetie. I've since removed this app and I have had no / zero black screens since then.
    Here's my theory:
It runs constantly. And perhaps causes issues as your mac tries to wake the screen after going into energy saver mode. Maybe if you get a tweet just as your mac wakes up it cause the wake function to crash.
So if you are getting the black screen and have tweetie installed. Remove it and see if it solves your problems.
