Keyboard is not working properly in Macbook !

Dear all,
On 9th Jan'2010, I used slightly wet mac cleaning cloth with water to clean my macbook in outer portions and this I've done after shut down. I've done before several times but nothing happened. One more thing happened this time, I updated it to Mac OS X 10.6.2. When I start up my macbook, it worked smoothly 2-3 minutes after that it shows , key always press. Then I shut down again and check it the same behavior I found. After 1 hour all keys stop working with caps lock key's LED green but trackpad working correctly. When I put my macbook in sun light some of keys are now back in work but most of them are not. Since now in start up it always shows pressing key , and by pressing \ key it stops. My keys which works well are: 3, 7, 9, u, o, p, \, d, j, l, ;, ', m. Some of keys showing messing behavior means by pressing one key it shows many in keyboard viewer, e.g., pressing key w it shows twy, t it shows twy, and y it shows twy and so on. I noticed when I keep caps lock on, if I press any of the key it effects on caps lacks's LED shows. It means some how all keys are working. Some times caps lock LED glow dim and later times it becomes brighter. Its glow is inconsistently. External USB keyboard and USB mouse are working perfectly if I remove the effect of , key after startup by pressing \ in the internal keyboard. In startup it always take the effect of , key of the internal keyboard. Because of this I'm not able to do hardware check, PRAM resetting etc. Some times it shows strange keyboard viewer:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/46629593@N08/4276121304/
. When I restart it becomes normal US keyboard viewer. When macbook went in sleep it doesn't wake up by pressing any of the working keys of the internal keyboard while by the external keyboard it does. I'm not very much sure whether it is a hardware problem or software. Help me out friends. Many thanx in advance.

Your alt (aka opt or ⌥) key is stuck down. This seems to be quite common these days.
Try teasing it up with the corners of two credit cards or similar flexible, non-conducting tools.
If that doesn't work, the wafer switch underneath may be damaged, in which case it'll need to go in for service.

  • Keyboard issue I have a iMac thats about 4 years old, and now the keyboard is not working properly. some keys do not work. Any suggestions ?

I think I may have a virus! My keyboard is not working properly. When I press the zero key, it doesn't appear. Other keys that do not work include the directional keys, delete key, and others. I tried everything that I can think of to fix it, but nothing sesems to be working. Should I bring the keyboard and=/or the entire computer into my local Apple store+? see, the +? appears before the question mark, and I didn't put it there! Thanks!

No need to take the computer at this stage.   Just take the keyboard into your local Apple store for examination.   If you have another machine, not necessarily Apple, you could try the board on that or perhaps a friend's machine … they are largely universal.
You do not have a virus.

  • My keyboard is not working properly. To get an a i have to type a q

my keyboard is not working properly. To get an a i have to type a q. To get a w I must type a z. M is the semicolon. Period is less than sign. I have turned off the computer and unplugged the keyboard and it still does not work. Running OS 10.6.8  Just noticed I have to use caps to get numbers.

Somehow I had gotten my keyboard preference changed to French.
If you have more than one keyboard layout enabled (checkmarked in the Input Sources section of the Language & Text control pane in System Preferences), then pressing Command-Spacebar or Command-Option-Spacebar will switch the active layout from one to the next.
You can prevent that from happening by either -
    • Reducing the number of enabled keyboard layouts to one; or
    • Turn off those two keyboard shortcuts. You can do that in Syatem Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts; click the Keyboard & Text Input in the left pane, then uncheck the two "select" items in the right pane.

  • Thermal Problem - MacBook keyboard is not working properly

I have a strange problem which I have never seen beeing reported before. While working with battery power everything works normal. When loading the battery or under heavy processor load the Macbook heats up and the keyboard has the following problem: the number keys 1 to 9 (and only them) do not work any more. If the Macbook cools down, the number keys start to work again.
What can be the problem ?

Sounds like you may have a circuit laminate problem with the keyboard. You need to contact apple to get help for this problem.

  • Keyboard backlight not working properly

Hi, first of all, thank you for your replies and sorry for the bad grammar (english not my first language).
    Background info:
    I have a 17inch macbook pro 3.1
    Core 2 duo 2.4
    Im running Osx 10.7.2
    Upgraded HD and memory.
    Issue
I had this computer since 07, no problems until about a week.
keyboard back light doens't work properly, I have tried resetting SMC and using an app called LabTick.
ONLY if I press slightly (without actually pressing completly) the keys "F" or "G" the backlight works.
when it does it responds to the F8-F10 keys and goes off on light rooms.
Its pretty annoying, it can be working for hours then it stop working and I have to play with f and g keys to get it working again for a long period of time.
is this a common issue?, is there a quick fix, I really dont wanna pay about $800 to change the whole logic board.
    Thank you

    emmm... anyone had this issue?
No and  don't think you will.
I think you have a problem with your computer. Maybe a clean install of the OS might fix it, maybe not.
If not then there is something wrong internally which can not be fixed without figuring out what internal part is causing it.
That can't be done on this forum.

  • Ergonomic keyboard 4000 not working properly

    Hi all,
I have a very weird problem with my MS Ergonomic 4000 keyboard (USB) connected to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.5). I've connected it in the past and it worked just fine but now, it's not functioning properly. I'm typing this on the MacBook keyboard, but here's what happens when I type the letter i using the ergonomic keyboard: i9
This is just from one tap of the letter i. It only happens with the lower-case i, and not with when typing a capital I (shift+i) This happens with other keys as well.
I searched the forums and support sites and so have since both removed intellitype and then installed intellitype 8.2 for the proper OS, but still no change.
Any help / advice will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Thanks Esquared,
I have the same problem in safe mode. I just tried it on my iMac and it does the same thing there. Also, when I press Shift + any key, a dialog pops up asking me to assign a function to a number key that I didn't press. The numlock key types "4" as well.
So I'm guessing that the issue is with the keyboard itself. The question is, can anything be done? It's relatively new and I'd hate to have to just throw it out.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Webcam and keyboard light not working on my macbook pro

I just reinstalled snow leopard on my macbook pro and I can seem to get my webcam to work, the light on the keyboards are not coming on either, has anyone encountered something like this before

Don't know about the webcam, but a SMC reset may help the keyboard backlight:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
If you installed Snow Leopard and then updated it, then it might not hurt to open Disk Utility and repair permissions if you haven't already done so. Be sure all your software is up to date.
    Good luck!

  • Please help - keyboard backlight not working properly

The keyboard backlighting on my 15in early 2008 macbook pro stopped working properly about two weeks ago. I opened it at night to find that only the middle keys were lighting up. No spills, no drops or anything out of the ordinary. I have already reset the SMC (via sleep/restart/shutdown and shift/control/option/power), but no luck. Currently the only keys being lit are: 6 7 8 T Y U G H J B N. If anyone knows of a fix for this or anything else I should try, please help. Thanks.

You should take your MacBook Pro to Apple for repair.

    Fast answers:
    1. Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM and SMC. Doesn't usually 'cure' keyboard problems you report, but it costs nothing and only takes a few minutes.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3819550?start=0&tstart=0
    2. Try plugging in a USB keyboard. Doesn't absolutely have to be a Mac keyboard. A PC keyboard will work for a test. If the typing problem does not occur with the USB keyboard, you have a temporary solution until you can arrange to visit a repair facility.
    3. If your MacBook is older and has a user-removable battery, shut down the computer, remove the battery, and examine it for signs of 'bulging' or swelling. Then connect the computer to the Magsafe power supply, without reinstalling the battery, and turn it back on. If the keyboard problem has gone away, it was likely caused by a swelling battery.

  • The letters e-o on my keyboard is not working properly. Nothing spilled, Laptop not dropped.  I've cleaned out underneath and everything seems fine. Problem happens intermittently but seems to get worst the longer I have the computer on. Any ideas?

    Macbook pro  OSX  Version 10.9.4
Top row of letters, e-o, are sluggish and not working each time  press them.
I have cleaned underneath them, I did not spill anything or drop the computer - It just started to happen.
    Any ideas????

The behavior of the keyboard not responding after the machine is on and used for a time sounds a lot like swelling under the keyboard…the battery is under the keyboard, processor to the side, and issues with trackpads and keyboards have often ended up being a battery swelling.  Makes it worth while taking the MacBook Pro in sooner rather than later to have it checked.  The techs may ask to keep the machine for a few hours so they can run it long enough to see the behavior if nothing shows immediately on their diagnostics.
When things like this happen, my attitude is on the conservative side…check it out before it can get worse.

  • Keyboard will not work properly

Only some keys function properly. No alphabet keys works and only 5 number keys. Mute works, volume does not. Scroll arrows do not work, but caps lock does, and so on. Late 2008 MBPro

Sounds like you have a bad keyboard or keyboard cable or a bad connection between that cable and the logic board. It does not sound as though your problem could be software-based.
If you have access to an external USB keyboard you could plug in and test with, that should tell the tale. If it works OK, you have a hardware problem.

  • My keyboard is not working properly.

I bought a brand new wireless keyboard and I thought it would connect with no problem but unfortunately most of the keys are not working correctly. I tried to fix it in the keyboard shortcuts but some of the features are not available in the keyboard shortcuts. The "sound" keys are not working (f10,f11,12).  There is I need help!

    Hi
    Try the following.
    Hard reset:
Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery. Disconnect all the external peripheral devices connected. Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds. Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
    Power on.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to see if this will launch the Start-up Menu and then select F10 to enter the bios menu.
Press F5 to load the defaults (this is sometimes F9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key), use the arrow keys (assuming they work in this menu) to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Press F10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let the system boot into Windows. Check the keyboard.
    Note--
If you find the keys don't work in the Bios menu, then this is likely to be a Hardware issue.
