Keyboard issue - "C" key is intermittently responding

I have a MacBook Pro 15" I bought in January. Yesterday the "c" key began acting funny. I have to press it very hard for it to respond, but not always. Sometimes it seems to work fine, others if I press it with regular pressure it does not respond, but then does if I press it a second time harder. Anyone else have this issue? Any thoughts? Should I take it in to the Genius Bar to have them look at it? I have the firmware keyboard updated so that does not seem to be the problem.
Thanks!

Hi. I just started encountering this problem with the f key. Bought my MacBook Pro May 13. Did you make a trip to the Genius Bar? If so were they able to help? If not, were you able to find a solution?
Thanks,
Andi

  • Macbook Pro 2010 Model Keyboard Issue - Middle keys not working

    Hi.
I have a Macbook Pro 2010 model, for no other reason other than my cat sitting on it (tiny cat, very dry...) the middle row of keys (A,S,D,F,G,H,J,K,L) all stopped working, CAPS still works, as well as : ; " ' and the enter/return key.
I've done nearly everything I can think of, reset everything, reinstalled OS X... Other than pulling the thing apart.
Any suggestions or ideas of how I might fix this cheaply? Or what the problem may be?

    Hello AJTheGamer
Check with the Keyboard Viewer to make sure no other keys are being pushed down to prevent it from the keys that you are typing to be registered. Another thing you can check is to try and create a new user to see if the issue carries across the system as a whole.

  • [SOLVED] Keyboard issue - fn+key "KeyRelease" event not triggered

    Hi Archers :)
First post, sorry if not in the right section.
I have a quite anoying bug. I bought a no name laptop, imported by Textorm, model M116 SU7300, same model as this one (http://www.textorm.com/pc-portable/pc-p … 22%5D.html)
On the keyboard, the '<' and '>' symbols are mapped on "fn+W" and "fn+MAJ+W".
Everything works fine in a TTY console. All others fn-KEY are working well.
The problem is with a Xorg environment : when pressing fn+W or fn+MAJ+W, it seems that the release key is never triggered, acting like if I was pressing the key in continue.
When pressing another key, the crazy '<' input stop, but then, fn+W won't works again... until I trigger a press/release event with 'acpi_fakekey 86'.
    Then, same scenario.
I booted a live Archbang,  same result (well, I wasn't very surprised), and a live Sabayon... same result.
Using xev, I can see that when pressing/releasing fn+W, the KeyReleased event is never triggered. I can provide a log if needed.
So it seems related to the Xorg driver....
I tryied to use the kbd driver by adding an xorg.conf
    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "CoreKeyboard"
    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "fr" # "fr-oss" pour Feisty et +
    Option "XkbVariant" "latin9"
    EndSection
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "Off"
    EndSection
I can confirm that the kbd driver was in use with Xorg log :
    [ 900.371] (II) LoadModule: "kbd"
    [ 900.371] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/kbd_drv.so

[ 900.780] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Generic Keyboard" (type: KEYBOARD, id 6)
    ... no luck. Same comportement.
I tryed the xorg-input-evdev git version, no luck. (But if I understand, xorg-input-evdev use kbd as underlying driver?)
    I also tryed xorg-server-dev 1.14.99.1-1
So for now, I use a ugly hack : I mapped "W-W" and "S-W-W" in my openbox rc.xml to execute "acpi_fakekey 86". Nearly working all the time.
I know this isn't directly related to Arch, but if someone has any pointers... I take any ideas.
    Thanks in advance!

    Wow thanks!
I confirm that this is working.
Thanks to your infos, I investigate the udev stuff.
You will have to know the vendor and product name of your machine :
    cat /sys/class/dmi/id/{sys_vendor,product_name}
Thats the strings your udev rule have to match in ENV{DMI_VENDOR} and ATTR{[dmi/id]product_name}.
For me, both was empty, so I use a wildcard :
    ENV{DMI_VENDOR}=="*", ATTR{[dmi/id]product_name}=="*"
Then, you'll have to specify which codes needs to trigger a key release (sames as found with keymap -i)
Add a file in /usr/lib/udev/keymaps/force-release/  whith the hex values (one per line)
    I named mine 'textorm'
    /echo 0x56 > /usr/lib/udev/keymaps/force-release/textorm
And add it in the RUN of your udev rule (not the full file name):
    ENV{DMI_VENDOR}=="*", ATTR{[dmi/id]product_name}=="*", RUN+="keyboard-force-release.sh $devpath textorm"
Knowing your serio ( /sys/bus/serio/devices/serio0), you can test the keyboard-force-release.sh script (the serio parameter HAVE TO NOT begin with /sys/)
    /usr/lib/udev/keyboard-force-release.sh bus/serio/devices/serio0 textorm
You can then check the /sys/bus/serio/devices/serio0/force_release content.
    Works like a charm :)

  • MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2010 using Mac OS X 10.8 Keyboard Issues.

    Good day ASC,
I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2010 upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8. It now has keyboard issues. Keys F4, 4, r, f, v, caps lock, space bar, and directional keys left and down do not work. I've been looking into the problem thinking it could be a software issue. Can anyone help?

  • Keyboard Issues Intermittent Use of Keys & Tracker Mouse

    Hello All,
Look forward to some help please.
Not sure what is wrong, seems there are a number of weridy things going on. Nothing dramatic, but all very annoying.
About a month ago replaced the HD myself, re-installed, everything seemed fine. Then had the following problems.
1 - 'U, J, M' keys stopped working. After PRAM zap were ok.
2 - At a later date the directional 'up & right' keys and the 'Return' stopped working, no explanation just sometimes works with a restart or a complete power down and reboot.
3 - Tracker pad stops working completely then plug in a PC USB mouse and might start working again, might not.
4 - Screen goes black and I have to press the power button to get the machine up again. This is with the power cable plugged in and power on.
I appreciate this machine is oldish but these are strange enough problems, with no consistent reasons for happening that I can think of.
Lastly I got the following message when it went completely south on me.
I'd appreciate any help possible, other forums have not been able to even post a response. Many thanks again.
This morning I had points 2 & 4 happening and had to power down reboot.

    Mike:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your, apparently, random keyboard issues may be due to either faulty connection of the keyboard ribbon cable to the logic board, or a defective/damaged ribbon cable. I suggest you go back in and make sure the connection of the ribbon cable to the logic board is secure. If necessary place a new piece of kapton tape on it to secure it.
I further suggest that you boot the computer from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer, and run the extended tests in a loop (hold down Ctrl + L during tests) and let is run for a while, as intermittent issues may take up to several hours to show up.

  • HP 15-f024wm laptop, Certain keys don't respond well, anyone have this issue???

Hi, I recently bought a HP 15f-024wm laptop and I've had keyboard issues from day 1. The problem is mainly with the "H" key and the comma key. They do not respond well unless I press them hard, which is really aggravating when you're trying to type fast. I always have to be conscious of how hard I'm pressing the keys or else keystrokes are missed. Does anyone else have this problem? I keep thinking that maybe it's something I did, but I've been super careful with this laptop so I can't think of anything I could have done to cause this.  If this is just how the keyboards are, then I can live with it, but it's bothering me not knowing if it's something I did or if this is just how they are.  I really do not want to have to return this laptop. I like everything about it except the keyboard. Anyone else experience this issue?

    @vincentd1215 ,
Thank you again for posting back with your information.  When dealing with a key issue like you are having it usualy due to the contact pad on the keyboard being worn or having something not letting it make full contact.
To fix this you would have to normally have the keyboard replaced.
Before that try first updating the drivers for the keyboard.  Here is a link for your notebooks support page.  Here you will find the software and drivers.  As well you will find the Maintenance and Service Guide.  You can use that to see if you can open up the notebook and check to make sure the keyboard is in place and connected correctly.

my keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random. "z" is the unresponsive character.
Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.

  • Delete key + Keyboard issue

Hey, I have a MacBook from mid 2007 that I use for Boot Camp. I was wondering if there was any way to have some key that would be the equivalent of the delete key on Windows (I am running XP).
Additionally, on XP, for whatever reason it likes to go to the French keyboard, which is annoying since I will go for a "?" and get a capital "é". Anyone know what to do?

Sounds like you have a French keyboard selected. In Control Panel select the Regional and Language Options. Now click on the Languages tab and select the Details box. Here you can control which keyboards are available under Installed Services.
If you poke around a bit you will be able to address the French keyboard issue.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings (if you can)
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • MacBook Pro 10.4.11 keyboard issue (beaten path??)

When my MacBook Pro starts up or wakes up, some keys, specifically q,w,e,r,t,y,u,i,o, and the left Shift key, don't respond. The duration of the problem is quite unpredictable; a few minutes to maybe up to 30 minutes. If I wait long enough they become responsive eventually. When I bought it in 2007 I didn't have this problem. I think it started ~1 year after the purchase.
From googling I found out that many MacBook Pro owners were having similar problems. These are mostly with version 10.5 and many people seem to agree that this is a Leopard-specific issue, but I've also seen a few people complaining about similar keyboard issues with 10.4. I also found out that Apple released some sort of a keyboard software update to fix these problems. However, that update requires 10.5, and mine is 10.4.11.
This week I finally took my computer to the Apple store and showed it to a 'Genius'. He said he was not familiar with this problem, and when I mentioned the keyboard software update, he hooked up some sort of cable and ran 10.5 on my computer, but the computer in that state didn't find any keyboard updates (at least that's how I understood his explanation). Therefore, he concluded that this is a hardware problem and that the machine needs a repair.
Now, I don't question the Genius' superior knowledge to mine, but I still can not believe it's not a software problem. If it is hardware problem, how come it occurs always/only after the computer wakes up? Is it coincidence that the symptom is so similar to the known software problem?

I'm having a similar problem although I am not trying to upgrade my version. Certain keys don't work on the built-in keyboard: delete, space bar, caps lock, quotes-apostrophe key...I have to use the "keyboard viewer" to use these particular keys. My adapter is connected to the computer, but the problem persists.
Can anyone please suggest troubleshooting for this annoying problem? It has been like this for about 2 weeks now.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated!

  • "'", "M", "J", "U", "7" keys randomly stop responding temporarily

    Hi,
I just bought a new Macbook Pro, 2.0ghz, 1 gig ram, 100 gig hd, and I've found that the ',m,j,u, and 7 keys often stop responding. I'm using the 10.4.7 update.
Is this common at all, and if so is there a way to fix it? Non of the other keys seem to have an issue, so i'm not sure if it's a hardware or a software issue.
If anyone has any ideas let me know!
    Thanks.

    Hi Raf,
That fact that it happened when you were re-installing may just be an unhappy coincidence.
This iBook will not be in warranty for this sort of thing, unfortunately. You can try sourcing a replacement keyboard assembly from eBay or from places such as:
    http://www.pbfixit.com/cart/catalog/category14_Keyboards_page2.html
They have no stock at the moment (I just cruised that link), but it's a good place to start. Googling for the part may also help.
The keyboard is easily replaced. Your iBook owner's manual should have sufficient information for this, otherwise try:
    http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/49.0.0.html
    Cheers!

    Greetiings,
My "O" key donesn't respond.  Entire rest of keypad works just fine. I took key apart but all plastic looks good. I cleaned it.  When I push rubber boot button nothing happens.  Can anyone tell me how to fix this? (Other than a wireless keypad- which I already have but since my Bluetooth decides when and where it wants to work- or not- that option isn't great.

    Thanks for helping!!
    Jagid0123

    Hello there, Jagid0123.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great, in-depth steps for troubleshooting your issue:
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1381
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Thanks for reachign out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.
