Keyboard Issues Intermittent Use of Keys & Tracker Mouse

Hello All,
Look forward to some help please.
Not sure what is wrong, seems there are a number of weridy things going on. Nothing dramatic, but all very annoying.
About a month ago replaced the HD myself, re-installed, everything seemed fine. Then had the following problems.
1 - 'U, J, M' keys stopped working. After PRAM zap were ok.
2 - At a later date the directional 'up & right' keys and the 'Return' stopped working, no explanation just sometimes works with a restart or a complete power down and reboot.
3 - Tracker pad stops working completely then plug in a PC USB mouse and might start working again, might not.
4 - Screen goes black and I have to press the power button to get the machine up again. This is with the power cable plugged in and power on.
I appreciate this machine is oldish but these are strange enough problems, with no consistent reasons for happening that I can think of.
Lastly I got the following message when it went completely south on me.
I'd appreciate any help possible, other forums have not been able to even post a response. Many thanks again.
This morning I had points 2 & 4 happening and had to power down reboot.

Mike:
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your, apparently, random keyboard issues may be due to either faulty connection of the keyboard ribbon cable to the logic board, or a defective/damaged ribbon cable. I suggest you go back in and make sure the connection of the ribbon cable to the logic board is secure. If necessary place a new piece of kapton tape on it to secure it.
I further suggest that you boot the computer from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer, and run the extended tests in a loop (hold down Ctrl + L during tests) and let is run for a while, as intermittent issues may take up to several hours to show up.

  • Keyboard Control FAIL: Using TAB key on websites directs cursor to nowhere!!! Why?

(using 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 MAC MINI, OS X Lion 10.7.5)
I have always felt safer using the keyboard rather than mouse-clicking on search fields etc. (Open Firefox, hit command+L to the URL I want to go to, then hop to next field with TAB key).
Most notably frustrating example is with using Google, this has not worked right for some time. Say that you to start to search for something on google "main page" and then it goes to the search results page... You go to edit your search or type your next search and the cursor is flashing inside (but off center) of the search field and inputting text is not an option. Also you may instictively hit ESC (while in search field) when you are being given suggestions you don't want, and then the cursor moves again to this no-man's land in between fields.
The other KEYBOARD control issue that I have found is this:
Sometimes you cannot Close Window or even Quit Firefox with the usual keyboard shortcut. Usually when a few windows or tabs are open, or when there is some pop-up survey etc. on page. You can usually ALT+TAB to another open program and then back, and then you can close window or application. But that seems really sketchy to me! This happens all the time on major websites. You can go File-> Close Window or File->Quit, but when you use the same keyboard command the file menu just flashes with an "error tone."

The TAB key thing was the same in safe mode. Actually I should add/correct, regarding that google search example: when the cursor is in "inbetween fields" positions, actually it lets you type at the END of the text that you had typed in the field (even though the cursor is blinking before the text). and if you "Command A" to replace the text in the search field while cursor in this position, it instead selects all the rest of the text OUTSIDE the field. Just doesn't make any sense. I think this happens with fields on Facebook as well.
That first issue is just very annoying because it comes up every day and I never get used to it. I would be actually be curious to hear from someone whom this DOES NOT happen to.
The 2nd issue I mentioned occurs more randomly, and seems more definately a Firefox issue. (When you can only close a window or quit from the drop down menu with the mouse, Command W and Command Q just give an error beep)

  • Keyboard issue: Super-sensitive "z" key all of a sudden...

Just noticed in the last day or two that the "z" key on my q10 has become super sensitive, it is almost impossible to type an "s" on the keyboard without a "z" being added on...in fact, you don't have to fully depress the "z" key to get a z, you just need the fainted pressure on it. Ideas? Has to be a hardware issue, doesn't it?

Thanks for trying that, stheemka! We want to put a stop to any further frustration you're experiencing with this issue on your Q10. Since the device isn't damaged and is less than 12 months active, it may qualify for warranty replacement. • Keyboard failing intermittently using Numbers '09 in Lion

Since upgrading to Lion today, my keyboard is cutting out in Numbers. It has become completely unusable. I have reinstalled and deleted plists to no avail. I have updated the iWork Suite through Software Update to get the newest update released yesterday. I hope that someone will be able to help me and I will note that this is also happening in both Keynote and Pages. It is also an issue on creating new documents and not just ones that have been migrated to OS X Lion. I appreciate  and thank everyone for any help that is offered.

What you get is the 'normal' behavior.
When you leve the keyboard for some microseconds, the app start its AutoSave task.
As iWork apps are badly coded, the task eat every cycles available in on eprocessor core so you can't do anything just wait for the save achievement.
I delivered a script allowing us to get rid of that.
    Save_As#3 :
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16810268
    Open a document,
    File > Duplicate
    close the original document
This way, the open document is a 'never saved' one.
Work on it, Autosave will not apply.
From time to time, trigger the script.
    It will :
    (a) duplicate the work in progress
    (b) save the replicate
    (c) close the replicate
You will be able to continue to work in the original duplicate without AutoSave action.

    Hi,
I mostly use my Laptop for working and here I often need access to the "F-Keys". Original I need to press "fn" to get the "F-Keys".
My question is how to change it back so that I have allways access to the "F-Keys" and to the Multimediakeys only when I press the "fn" additional.
    Thanks

  • Keyboard "use F-keys as standard function keys" setting gets reset on system restart

    Hi all,
I have set in system preferences -> keyboard to "use f1, f2 etc. keys as standard function keys" or rather I want to keep this setting set but unfortunately this gets reset on each restart-
I'm wondering what happened, this used to work initially with Lion. I may have set somewhere something that resets this on each start but I have no clue what that might be.
Machine iMac mid 2011, keyboard Apple alu keyboard with cable (pre-Lion layout).

Thanks BDAqua...sure looked like the function had disappeared over time and appreciate the confirmaion. Hard to understand why a function like that would be taken away. The program I run uses function keys f3,f7,f11 and f23(shifted f11) and I have all working okay by turning them off in keyboard and mouse menus. The f23 is causing issued in that when I use shifted f11 the screen scrolls upward instead of passing along the f23 function. Looks like I will have to work around this since the operating system will not allow the function keys to just work "standard"...thanks by the way for the welcome...!!

  • Bluetooth keyboard K810 and mouse T630 at the same time, repeating keys and mouse starts to stutter

    I use a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2, Windows 8.1(core edition), x86 (32bit).
If I pair a Bluetooth keyboard K810 and mouse T630 at the same time, with Wifi On, the keyboard starts repeating the keys and the mouse starts to stutter. Especially if WiFi is under load (when downloading something).
This doesn’t happens if I pair only the keyboard, or if I pair mouse and keyboard with Wifi OFF.
If I pair a Bluetooth keyboard and use a USB mouse with Wifi ON, everything works fine.
If I pair a Bluetooth mouse and use a USB keyboard with Wifi ON, everything works fine.
I think it is an issue with two Bluetooth devices paired at the same time with Wifi ON.
    So here is a summary:
BT mouse and BT keyboard / Wifi ON ----> repeating chars and the mouse starts to stutter (bug)
BT mouse and BT keyboard / Wifi OFF ----> works fine
Only BT keyboard / Wifi ON ----> works fine
Only BT mouse / Wifi ON ----> works fine
USB mouse and BT keyboard / Wifi ON ----> works fine
USB keyboard and BT mouse / Wifi ON ----> works fine
Where is the problem? Is there any solution?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have solved the problem. In the Wlan-Drives-Settings there is the "Bluetooth Collaboration" option. I put the value to "Disable" and now works everything like charm.
    Best regards, jC
    Broadcom manual:
    Bluetooth Collaboration
Bluetooth Collaboration enables general purpose input/output transmit suppression protocol between the IEEE 802.11 media access control (MAC) and an external Bluetooth chip to minimize transmit interference. Bluetooth Collaboration is enabled by default.

  • Delete key + Keyboard issue

Hey, I have a MacBook from mid 2007 that I use for Boot Camp. I was wondering if there was any way to have some key that would be the equivalent of the delete key on Windows (I am running XP).
Additionally, on XP, for whatever reason it likes to go to the French keyboard, which is annoying since I will go for a "?" and get a capital "é". Anyone know what to do?

Sounds like you have a French keyboard selected. In Control Panel select the Regional and Language Options. Now click on the Languages tab and select the Details box. Here you can control which keyboards are available under Installed Services.
If you poke around a bit you will be able to address the French keyboard issue.

  • Mouse, keyboard issues; 8 core MP; 10.5.2

My dad just bought an 8 core Mac Pro. He only had it a few days with 10.5.1. But after applying 10.5.2, he and I have both experienced issues with the numeric keypad being unresponsive, as well as function keys to which we have assigned Quickkeys triggers. Pressing, F1 on the new slim keyboard, for instance, does not trigger the quickey, but attaching his old keyboard does. That sounds like a keyboard issue, but there is more.
Similarly, double clicks from his mouse will not be recognized (Apple mighty mouse). The finder appears to freeze, and we generally have to resort to relaunching the finder to regain control. Very strange behavior.

Hi, how's about a Pram reset, it's harmless, non-intrusive and can only help. Directions:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Try this, and if it fails to correct issue, boot in safe mode, with the shift key held until start-up.
Post back with results, also run Disk Permissions. It's in your Utilities folder>Disk Utilities. Also, boot off the install disk while holding the c key, press English and go to Utilities and repair hard drive.
These three simple procedures may solve many issues.

  • New wireless mouse and keyboard issues

I have a new 20", 2.4GHz alu iMac, and I ordered it with the new bluetooth keyboard, and bluetooth mighty mouse. They've always worked great, but yesterday, the mouse has had intermittant lag, and it says that the keyboard has lost connection. I've been running Leopard since it came out, and I've never had such problems with Tiger. I reinstalled Leopard a few hours ago (erase and install), and I'm still getting the lag. I wanted to see whether it is my mouse, so I tried pairing it with my brother's white intel iMac, and it couldn't pair, but it made my brother's bluetooth mighty mouse lag too! Could this be due to interference? Our rooms are right beside each other.
Also, when the lag occurs, I get the message that its lost connection with the keyboard, however it still works perfectly. The lag is very noticeable, and it takes about 3-4 times longer for the mouse to move, while being very choppy. This is for about 10-15 seconds, and then it goes normal speed again.
Is anyone else having this challenge? Could anyone diagnose whether it's likely to be the computer, the mouse, or interference, (or other!)?
    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I have a 6 week old imac 24" alu intel with wireless keyboard & mouse and it was all working fine until the 10.5.1 upgrade. it also started on the same day there was a big rain storm so I thought that might be messing with my blue tooth connections. i have no other bluetooth devices other than the mouse and keyboard. at first it was intolerable. i'd get the keyboard connection lost message every few minutes, the keyboard would continue to function and the mouse would go very sluggish for a minute or 2. this was happening every 5 minutes or so. i deleted each one an reconnected, shut everything off, restarted the computer and it seemed ok for about 1 hour and then it happened again a few times. definitely not as often as before but it still happens from time to time every few hours. power on both is about 75% and seeing as they have new duracel batteries i'm sure they are not dead.
I did the auto update to 10.5.1 and had all the permission issues so then downloaded and installed the larger 100+ meg update. not sure if this has caused any problems.
So far leopard has only been a pain. Reason 4 crashes, Parallels 3 crashes, Mail crashes (I wrote some important notes which I guess don't get automatically saved like drafts and lost the notes when mail crashed several hours after I wrote them), my software update even crashed once. is Leopard built on OS 9 technology? what a disappointment.
Oh and internet and wireless connection to ADSL seems pretty slow, slower than tiger I think.
Windows should start a new campaign called "Come back".
One last beef, do other people find this wireless keyword (metal) not so responsive, letters get missed as I type, space bar is stiff and squeaky, overall not great for someone doing a lot of writing? that's what I think.

    rajlego,
in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button.

my keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random. "z" is the unresponsive character.
Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.

I am using Photoshop CS5 on a new iMac with a wireless keyboard.  I used to be able to hit F11 to perform a custom sharpening action but now the F11 key is the volume control key and I have tried everything to disable or switch the volume key. I have also tried assigning other function keys to initiate the action. Is there a simple solution to this? What am I missing?

Try unmounting the volume on your iMac using Disk Utility. Then mount it again. You may need to reboot the laptop or relaunch its Finder process (using the Force Quit window) after remounting the drive on your iMac. Remember that no process may be accessing any files on the drive you plan to unmount, or the unmount will fail. Unmounting and remounting an external drive on my iMac made it become visible on my MacBook Pro after it had disappeared.
