Keyboard lighting stops in the dark

when ambient light dims to total darkness, my keyboard light turns off. Do you know why? It seems to work in find in mild light, but as soon as all the lights go out, so does the keyboard. Frustrating for working in the dark. My screen does fine. Any thoughts or guidance appreciated.

Here is the full blog post (in case it goes away):
*Macbook Air has 3 Level of Ambient Light Detection?*
Here's a simple test. Lets label these levels 1 - 3 for simplicity where
Level 1 is the brightest ambient light, screen brightness is set to "max" and keyboard backlight is off.
Level 2 is the darkness level that you notice your screen backlight darkens for the first time. Keyboard backlight is on (as in you can set the brightness)
Level 3 is the next level darker than level 2. I observed that the screen darkens further and keyboard backlight is also on (brightness is setable).
To ascertain that we do have a third level, test out your MBA in a bright environment. Cast a slight shadow over the light sensor (left of the iSight) until the screen darkens for the first time. Next, completely cover the light sensor. You will notice that the screen darkens again.
Here's the funny thing. If the keyboard brightness for level 2 is set to anything but the maximum, the keyboard brightness will completely turn off at level 3. Conversely, if you turn the keyboard brightness on at level 3 (anything brighter than no light), the brightness will be set to max at level 2. If the brightness is set to max at level 2, it is reduced greatly at level 3 probably to be less distracting.
Several Macbook Air users have complained about their keyboard backlight not working as advertised -- they have the backlight come on in semi-dark, then turn off again. The above observation seems to fit their situation quite well so if you are one of them, just cover your light sensor, set the brightness and see if that works out for you.

  • I thought the keyboard was meant to light up in the dark!?!?

    hi
my macbook (13.3 inch, 24GHz intel core duo) is about a day old now.
I thought the keys were meant to light up in a greeny colour?!?!
thanx to tell me if im right or not and if im confusingit with another mac!
If i am right then how do you get the keys to light up?

There are dozens of USB-powered lights to choose from. Most have small gooseneck stems that terminate in a USB connector on one end & an LED lamp assembly on the other, allowing you to position the light as needed. A few have a short cable & a clip-on lamp assembly, which you could clip to the MacBook's screen edge.
Different models have different numbers of LED's in various configurations. Some produce a small spotlight effect & won't illuminate much of the keyboard, others have a broader beam, but most won't illuminate the keyboard evenly from edge to edge like the built-in backlighting on the higher priced Mac laptops. OTOH, they can be pointed at other objects, like a paper document next to the computer, if necessary.
These lights draw power from the MacBook's (or any other) USB port, so they don't require a separate power source. An alternative is any of a number of battery powered LED lights, especially those designed to clip onto & illuminate books for night reading. They are a good addition to anyone's "on the go" laptop case, not just for keyboard illumination but also for things like examining network connectors in dark recesses.
They are usually very inexpensive, often $3 or less for the battery powered kind & usually under $10 for the USB ones if you buy "no name" versions from discount stores. Price doesn't seem to be a good indicator of quality.

  • Macbook Air fails to wake up from sleep. The keyboard lights up but the screen was still black. Had trouble turning it on and off and after I was able to turn the notebook back on, my information was lost.

My brand new macbook air is just over 1 month old, and I am already having a problem. While working on a pages doc I stepped away for a couple of minutes to find that my notebook went to sleep. battery life was 71%. So I tryed to wake it by keying a few buttons, but the screen would not wake and the keyboard was lit up. Also, I could not power it down. I was only able to power it down after i plugged it in to the wall outlet. After I restarted the computer my document was lost. I changed the settings so that the computer was fall asleep after 1 hour of no activity, because I'm afraid this will happen again and I will lose my work. What can I do to fix the problem?
    Regards,
    Tiffany

Well, since upgrading to Mavericks, I started watching a movie. Suddenly the screen dims and then goes black. Trying to waken my MBA means I need to restart. I have turned off all the sleep fuctions for the monitor and the hard drive. Still is happening??

  • Mac book goes into sleep mode it won't always come out the keyboard lights up but the screen will not

it seemed to start after i updated to OS X lion.

I have this same issue. When experiencing this issue I connected a wired mouse and selected/reviewed bluetooth device status which showed blutooth devices not connected. Trying to reconnect and/or restart the bluetooth devices (keyboard, mouse, and trackpad) did not work. Only a reboot solves the problem. Reseting the hardware does not prevent this issue.
Apple support informed me that this is a known bug and they are working on it. There is a bluetooth issue with supporting three bluetooth devices that manifests after sleep. My work around was to use only bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse. This solves the problem. After each OS patch is applied (in future) I plan to check and see if the issue is solved. I did not upgrade yet to to patches released in Feb. 2012 - so it might be fixed there (as part of the wifi sleep issue solution).

  • I just bought a Macbook pro and the keyboard lights flash on and off.  What's wrong? do I need to take it back?

    ahhhh help!

you can switch off the automatic lighting of the keyboard by going to system preferences then keyboard and uncheck 'automatically illuminate keyboard in low light' . after this you can control your keyboard light by using the buttons F5 and F6 at the top of your keyboard

  • Keyboard light doesn't work after updating to 10.8 on MBP

I have tried to update a MBP from Snow Leopard to Moutain Lion. But after updating the keyboard lights stopped working. Its A MBP from mid 2010 Core2, 2,4Ghz
We have tried to reset the smc.
Tried to untick the automatic brightness contoll of the keyboard llumination in system preferences.
Tried to use F5/F6 and it just shows that the keyboard light is turned on but its completly dark.
Is it coming a an mac os x 10.8 update for this problem?

Sounds like they did an Archive & Install, which leaves you with non-functioning Pro Apps (and Adobe apps, if you have any).
Try removing Final Cut Pro and Compressor and reinstall.
Instructions for reinstalling Final Cut Pro: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1846
    Instructions for reinstalling Compressor: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1888
There is an application called FCS Remover, but I am not sure if it works with Final Cut Pro 4.
If it is still not working, I would try what David suggests.
Here is a list Jon Chappell has compiled about what versions of OS X, QuickTime and FCP works best together: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/recommendedquicktime_and_mac_os_configurations_for_final_cutpro.html
If you live close to an AppleStore you could try to bring it back and ask them to help you.
    Best of luck!

  • Macbook Pro won't recognize iSight nor turn on keyboard lights

    Hi everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.8. I hadn't been able to turn the keyboard lights on with the F6 button for a few weeks now, and they hadn't been turning on automatically. Today, the computer stopped recognizing the built-in camera -- it's definitely a computer issue, as it is happening with numerous programs.
I have tried putting it to sleep and waking it up, restarting it, shutting it down and then turning it on, a PRAM reset, and an SMC reset, although I'm not sure whether the SMC reset went through because it didn't make any noise or anything when I tried it, although the power cord light did change colour. Any idea on how to fix what is happening?
    Best,

You have already tried all the usual troubleshooting suggestions.  The only thing that you did not mention was checking your Keyboard lighting settings through System Preferences.
Sounds like a trip to the AS or an AASP.

  • Macbook Pro (Late 2011) Keyboard Light isn't working anymore.

I reinstalled Macintosh OS since then my keyboard lights stopped working.
    I have tried :
    1. I have tried pressing F5 , F6 keys but they don't even show the icon of light dim and high on screen it didn't worked .
    2. I have tried every single option/shortcut in Preferences --> Keyboard pannel still didn't worked.
    3. I have tried installing windows using virtual box still it doesn't even work on Windows.
    4. I have tried create a guest user it didn't worked there as well.
    5. I have tried deleting a file from Library -> Prefrences --> com.apple.iokit.AmbientLightSensor.plist still not working.
    6. I have updated my Operating system to Mavericks still it isn't working.
Keyboard pannel in preferences looks like attached image, which has less options then other people's. anyone having any idea about how to resolve this issue?
Any application or anything which may resolve this issue please let me know
    Please help.

    Dear leroydouglas,
I have tried that as well, resetting the SMC. still it does not work

  • Keyboard lights will not stay off no matter what I do on my MacBook Pro. Why??

I've got a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo.
I have ALWAYS left the keyboard lights off for the 4 years I have had it.
But lately, no matter what settings I change or what I try, I cannot PREVENT the keyboard lights from coming on when I've been away from the computer for a long period of time.
Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light is NOT checked in System Prefs. I have reset the PRAM, and left the laptop off with the battery off for hours in hopes of resetting it.
Nothing will work. Almost every time I am away from my computer for hours, I come back and the keyboard lights are on. And when I tap the keyboard light brightness buttons, it just gives me the buster symbol (white circle with a line through it) on screen below the keyboard light brightness indicator for a few seconds. Somehow continuing to tap those buttons eventually makes the lights just turn off. Or holding my hands over the whole keyboard to trigger the sensor can suddenly allow me to control the on/off brightness with those buttons again. In which case I try turning the lights off completely or turning the brightness so low that it goes off.
But once again, when I wake up in the morning, I find the keyboard lights on.
Now the ONLY thing that has changed since this started happening is that I added a new User account. BUT that should asbolutely not cause this problem. I have checked to see if the System Preferences for the keyboard lights in the new user account were causing a conflict, but no, they are exactly the same as my main account.
I have not tried deleting the user account yet because I actually want it and would find it very hard to believe that was the culprit. It's just the only thing I can think of that changed shortly before this started happening.
Is there anything else I can do!?! Is there some preference file that controls the lights somewhere that could be corrupt that I need to trash?
Thank you for any help anyone can provide. This one has stumped me good.

From reading up of other forums with the same problem i have come up with two reasons why it is doing that.
first try doing a smc reset
if that does not work then it is a hardware error. Many people have had the problem and they have not been able to fix it so good luck

    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, you may have to take the MBP to the Apple Store  to have it checked.
