Keyboard lockout after screen sharing

I was doing some screen sharing from another Mac on my LAN. There's no "disconnect" feature to stop the remote control, so I simply quit the Screen Sharing "application," closed all windows, and logged out of the controlling Mac.
Problem is, at the target Mac, upon every other restart approximately, like this morning after software updating, the keyboard is locked out. Entire keyboard has no effect. Mouse control is okay. The other Mac wasn't touched for days, while this target Mac has been logging in and out just fine. The restart puts me in a state where I cannot type in my login password, and restarting (with mouse) brings me back to the same state, restart after restart. I don't think it has anything to do with the software update, but instead, some kind of residual control from the other Mac that was not fully severed upon quitting.
Even after going back to the other Mac to remotely log into Finder via screen sharing, the keyboard in the target Mac is still like disconnected. Mouse control still okay. Same problem.
Any solution?

Entire keyboard is locked out EVERY TIME my Mac is restarted! Not just every other time. I mean NOTHING on the keyboard works when locked out -- like it's disconnected, but there's no physical disconnection.
The iffy workaround that gets me back to normal, and only sometimes, is restarting via screen sharing from the remote Mac, then "closing" +Screen Sharing+ (it quits immediately), then quickly logging out of the controlling remote Mac. And THEN I still have to restart the target Mac several times to get lucky! For example, just now restarting five times did not work, but going through the gyration again + restarting twice got me back.
Remote Mac = 2005 Powerbook 15" G4 running 10.5.5
Target Mac = 2003 Dual 2GHz PowerMac G5 running 10.5.5
This new phenomenon came about only after I used +Screen Sharing+ on the LAN.

  • Crash after screen sharing

Hi there, it´s a bit long story.
I had an MB138xx/A mid 2007 mac mini with Snow Leopard installed, connected to my TV for watching movies. everything worked great.
I had a Macbook Pro 17" with Snow leopard too from which I used to control my mini via screen share.
Recently I purchased a new MB pro 15" retina with mavericks.
I tried to do some screen sharing again with my mini, and it seemed to work, until after 30 min aprox. of use, the mini got frozen.
I shut down my mini with the power button and it got stacked at the apple logo screen. After a couple tries more, I managed to get to the login screen but mouse and keyboard did not connect bluetooth and I was not able to do anything. After some more tries there was no way to start it, safe reboot, verbose, clean NVram.. nothing.
Fortunately, I was able to start it as FW disk and was able to get all the data back using my laptop, but something looked wrong into disk utility and was not able to format it. The I got a software that enabled me to format it again, and finally I installed marevicks to the mini.
The mini worked perfectly even with 2 GB or ram, 1080p movies played perfectly.
I was able to control it with my new MPB with no problem.
PS: It was totally full of home dust and I had to vacuum it in order to remove it.
    BUT.
Yesterday, my wife connected to the mini using my old 17" MBP and guess what.. The mini freezed again!!!!
Nos I am in the same point, no way to go beyond the apple logo.
Do you guys know why is this happening? Is there any kind of malfunction related to screen share between Snow leopard and Mavericks that makes the host computer to die?
The any other reason I can imagine is that screen sharing takes a lot of processing effort and my old mini suffers some kind of overheating?
But then, why can´t I start it again after it becomes cooler? Why was my HD kinda damaged in the first problem?
May be all the problems are because my HD is unstable? I was watching some MKV movies with no problem..
Might the home dust have caused some hardware problem because of unproper cooling?
Thank you so much for your time.

I can only guess right now, but I'd say there's a fair chance that dust on the RAM may have corrupted the drive in unseen ways.
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.
click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v
A couple dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

  • Login freezes on iMac with Lion after screen sharing with another mac.

I have an iMac 27" Late 2009 2.8Ghz Intel Core i7 upgraded with Lion 10.7 (11A511).  I have screen sharing enabled on this computer, and I accessed the computer with a 15" MacBook Pro also running Lion of the same version. The screen sharing work.  However, when I exited screen sharing on my MacBook, and attempt to login again on the iMac, the login is stuck after entering the password.
Is anybody else have similar issues?

I am having this problem as well. On a late 2009 MPB. I can login to the guest account with no problem and I can also create a new user, but I cant access any of my filevaulted files. This happened after Silverlight caused Safari and everything else to freeze and I had to hard reboot, It's almost like lion is trying to reopen those apps when logging back in and it can't. I reinstalled Lion and repaired disks and disk permissions from the recovery hd. Anyone else??

  • Can't start video chat after screen sharing

I was engaged in a video chat with my dad - everything was working fine. I offered to let him share my screen, and that worked fine as well. He then tried to switch back to his own screen - I'm not sure what happened, but the end result is that neither one of us can initiate a video chat anymore. When we make ourselves available on our respective computers, we are able to text message, but the phone, video, and screen sharing icons remain grey. When I go to recent chats and click on the video chat with my dad, it says he is currently busy in another conference. When he goes into his recent chats and clicks on me, nothing happens. "Control" and "Escape" do nothing. We are both using 24" iMacs less than one year old, with Intel.

On the One successful Screen Share I have had a restart of iChat at both ends was needed.
I had no sense that Control ESC had worked. I know I lost the Audio at the same time but also Text chat went west as well. (typing but no replies)

  • Adobe Connect stays on tray after screen sharing

    Hi,
When sharing screen and stopping the ScreenSharePublisher,  the Adobe Connect component does not always close and stays on the tray.
Is there a way to ensure that the Adobe Connect component  closes properly?
    Thanks!

    Here you go
That's after the plugin had publishing stopped. Seems to be a new issue. Was there a new update to the Connect Plugin? Only noticed this today on a freshly formatted machine.

  • Menu bar translucency not working after screen sharing

I've taken a screen shot of my desktop
    http://picasaweb.google.com/victor.a.tran/Mac/photo#5202983242362095218
As you can see the top 1/3 of the menubar is white/light grayish.
This happened only after doing a screen share and I can't get it back to the original Leopard menubar, the only thing I can do to make it look "normal" is to turn off menubar translucency.
Anyone know how I can get the tranlucent menubar back?

All you have to do is create a sub directory on the remote server called junk or whatever, uploade the files there and supply a link. When things are sorted, you can delete the subdirectory.

  • Video constantly drops after screen sharing

Im on a brand new laptop running windows 8 just bought less than a month ago and the first thing I did when I got this thing was downloaded skype, its versaion 7.6. Before this, on my desktop and older laptops, Ive never had any problems. As of either this version of skype or this laptop (which I couldnt assume it would be the laptop when its brand new, but who knows) any time I am in a video call and screen share, the video will drop after roughly 10 - 30 seconds. Consistantly. First it shows whoever I am talking to's video drop, then mine. The call remains and we can reinitiate video, but it just keeps dropping every few seconds. It will go on until the call is closed and remade. It is quite annoying. I would like to get an older version of skype (7.4 maybe?) and try it out there to see if its the version or not, but I cant find any links to them. If anyone has any idea what is causing this, or has a link to an actual 7.4 download, Id appreciate it.

  • Freezing after a few minutes of screen sharing?

Hello, when setting up a screen sharing session on mountain lion with a lion laptop (the ml is being controlled by the lion laptop), the 10.8 laptop freezes after a few minutes of the session. The mouse cursor still works locally, however no clicking or keyboard input is accepted. The remote controller also loses the connection, and a hard reboot is the only thing to bring the computer back.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Dan

Yes, that is exactly what I am experiencing.
I followed instructions and found that computer was set to log out after 120 minutes.  I don't know if that is the default setting or not, but I know I never set it that way myself, didn't even know the option was there.
I have always had the computer set to start screensaver after 15 minutes, display sleep after 30 minutes, and computer sleep after 1 hour.  The computer never logged me out with those settings until a couple of days ago when this problem started.  I had changed computer sleep to never so I could see if remote desktop on my ipad would be able to connect to the imac, and that is when the problem started.
I am trying setting screensaver to 10 minutes, display sleep to 15 minutes, and computer sleep to never, and see if that solves the problem.  I also unchecked the box to log out after 120 minutes.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

  • Keyboard and mouse events during screen sharing

    I use OS X 10.6.8, my mom has 10.5.(8?).
Screen sharing used to work fine. I am always viewing her screen.
Lately, none of my keyboard presses or mouse clicks make it through the connection to her machine. I can 'influence' but not really control the placement of her cursor as viewed on my screen. She never sees the pointer move from wherever it was before I started trying to move it. I can see her screen fine, and even see some frame rate if she plays a video from an email message (but I don't get the audio stream). We can't continue talking while the video is playing though because our voice connection has too many dropouts.
She did change from using Comcast to using AT&T Uverse several months ago. I can't remember exactly when the troubles started, but it could have been at the time of that switch. She is getting a lower speed connection than she used to.
Are these issues strictly a problem of a too-slow connection, or is there something else to try. I'm most concerned about the keyboard and mouse loss, since that means I have to describe every action to her instead of doing anything myself. I can live without viewing videos over a screen sharing link...

    Hi,
It is worth doing  Speed check at both ends
    http://www.speedtest.net/
It may also pay to open the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) during a Audio or Video chat and checking the Bit rate and Framerate (on Video).
iChat in 1-1 Video needs "Real World" speed of 256kbps  (it will manage according to Apple at 128kbps).
This Min of 128kbps is the min for Screen Sharing as well.
The Connection Doctor will show you what iChat is using (your Bit rate) NOT what the Internet Speed is measured at.
It will be closer to the Upload Speed you have.
iChat will tend to settle closer to the slower speed of whichever Buddy has the slowest Upload (plus a margin for variances in the ISP's feed/service)
If the variances in the Internet Speed from the ISP varies too much then iChat will have difficulties.
It will drop Audio (As far as you as concerned) as it will start dropping frames to smooth the video out.
For this reason it can pay to go to iChat > Preferences > Video Section and try the Bandwidth Limit at 500kbps  (If for instance you have a 10Mbps Upload a 5% variance can be a whole 500kbps)
With both ends at 500kbps you can be below the Variance factor.
Try 200kbps if there still appear to be problems.
    NOTE:-
iChat's responses are determined by the Internet Speed (Or at least the portion that computer is getting = Bandwidth) and what else the computer is doing.
Depending on the Mac and it's Processor and the apps running at the time iChat may not get a decent use of the Processor.  (It is set to use it "last" a it were so Downloading, Playing Video elsewhere, or setting background tasks (Anit Virus scans, iMovie Rendering) may impinge on free Processor cycles).
Try to eliminate as much as possible.

  • Screen Sharing and different language keyboard

    Hi all,
my MacBookPro has US Keyboard and my iMac ITA.
If I tray to access to my iMac from my MaBook via Screen Sharing while it's Standing By, it asks me to login.
Unfortunately it was started with the Italian keyboard and in the session there is no chance to change it in the login form, so... it's very difficult input password with different keyboard layout...!!
Anyone know if there is a trick (keys combination) to invoke a function to resolve this problem?
    Many thanks.

    Sorry,
but taking a more accurate look to the posts I find the response: in the "Account", at the login option, is avaiable "Show keyboard menu at login" (something similar, my OS is in Italian).
    Thanks anyway!!

  • Screen Sharing and Keyboard Commands

Wow! I just discovered screen sharing on Leopard! I knew I could share across Ichat but didn't realise you could share on your own home network. It works brilliantly but i have a question.
How do you use keyboard commands whilst sharing?
For example I want to use quicksilver on the computer I'm controlling from my laptop of course quicksilver becomes active on laptop not the machine I'm controlling.
In other words how do i direct all keyboard entry to the other machine?

    Sorry,
but taking a more accurate look to the posts I find the response: in the "Account", at the login option, is avaiable "Show keyboard menu at login" (something similar, my OS is in Italian).
    Thanks anyway!!

  • Screen sharing not working with eMac lab after 3.2 update

Screen sharing no longer functions after applying the 3.2 update in our eMac labs running 10.4.10 and PPC processors. However, it still functions in our iMac labs running 10.4.10 Intel processors. Before update, I was able to screen share with all the computers in the lab. After the update, I am only able to share with one single computer at a time. Not very useful anymore for teachers to use for demonstrating purposes at our school. It definately had something to do with the update since it was working moments before the update. Please help before I have to call Apple regarding this issue. Again, it only seems to affect screen sharing across PPC eMac computers, not Intel based computers.

Through much testing at our schools, we determined that the problem lies with the update and the admin machine running ARD. If the admin machine is less than a G5 (doesn't matter if it is intel or PPC), ARD will not screen share with multiple computers (more than 3 machines) at a time. If you have a G5 admin machine, you probably will not experience this problem. Apple has yet to contact our district regarding any options for fixing the problem. We are currently in the process of shuffling computers to make sure there is a G5 admin machine in every lab to run ARD. However, I still think Apple needs to recognize this as a problem with their update. Screen sharing is a great tool for teaching class and it is too bad that with the current 3.2 update, it breaks the ability to use it with "older" G4 macs. Hence, that is why your eMac screen sharing is not working anymore. I can only hope for a prompt update to ARD to remedy this situation.

  • Screen Sharing slows down dramatically after RDP upgrade from 2 to 3

For some reason once we upgraded from RDP 2 to RDP 3 our Screen Sharing has gotten increasingly slow. We are using it in a school environment where the teacher will share their screen with the students, and as we add more students to the share the sharing slows down to become unusable. This problem is intermittent (otherwise I would go though the logs and run a control test), and has only started upon upgrading to RDP 3. Anyone else experience this behavior? I believe we are all running 10.5.x on the OS side.

I also know someone that is having this issue; it was fine with the previous ARD version they were using in the computer lab, but after upgrading screen sharing have slowed down. It's not really that of an issue when its just one computer, but when they put all 30 computers the FPS drops down.
Keep in mind that they were not having the issues before upgrading. I've also been told that, currently, they got a 5 MB connection. I ran a network test and everything seemed fine (or more like I didn't know what was going to tell me that something was wrong, but all the numbers were very low).

  • Keyboard Layout + Screen Sharing

    Hello all,
I am using Screen Sharing.app to connect my local MacBook Pro (Lion/15"/Early 2010 with builtin US Keyboard) to a remote MacBook Pro (Lion/13"/2011 with builtin Japanese Keyboard) over iCloud.
When I type the US keyboard of the local MBP, all the Cocoa applications on the remote MBP recognize the typed caracters as US layout. But when I type the US keyboard in X11.app on the remote MBP, X11 regards input characters as Japanese keyboard layout. It is very flustrating for me because I would like to use the US layout when I use X11 software such as emacs.
Does anyone know how I can make the remote X11.app recognize the US keyboard of the local MBP? Any help?
I have been suffering from the same problem with Snow Leopard + MobileMe.

You might want to look at creating an xmodmap file.  Some Google searches should help.
My limited use of xmodmap in the past has been to do simple things like change the capslock key to a control key.  I have not tried remapping an entire keyboard.  But in theory it should be possible, and my might even find an existing file that will provide the entire mapping you desire.
Actually I seem to recall it was possible to use xmodmap to output the map for a keyboard, so if you have a setup where X11 is treating your keyboard as english (like your local system), you mght be able to dump the xmodmap, then transfer that the remote system, and have xmodmap on that system load up the saved map.  Just a thought.  "Some Assembly Required" :-)

  • Screen sharing not working after Remote Desktop 3.2 install

OK, I think I screwed it up.
I'm moving to a new iMac running Mountain Lion, and I need to use Remote Desktop.  I own Remote Desktop 3.2 on DVD, so I installed from disk and launched the app.  My plan was to download the latest update to 3.6.x, but I figured I would launch it to enter my license key and then quit and download the update.
I was given an error that newer components were already installed and clicked the Quit button.  Ugh.  Next I went to Apple's download site and downloaded the newest update but when I ran that installer it told me it could not install on my drive.
My grand plan has now left me with no Remote Desktop, and the built-in Screen Sharing core service beach balls when I try to connect to a remote client.
Is there a way to save me from myself?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill

    Hi Bill,
You could try removing all the installed components manually and then try again (install, don't open but update right away).
According to the installer the files are located in:
/Applications/Remote Desktop.app (that one was hard to find )
    /Library/Application Support/Apple/Remote Desktop/
    /Library/Preferences/com.Apple.ARDAgent.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.Apple.RemoteDesktop.plist
    /Library/Receipts/
    /Library/Widgets/RemoteDesktop.wdgt
(not sure if the following files tie into other parts of the OS so removing them may cause issues)
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement
    /usr/bin/share/man/man1
perhaps a permission repair after all parts have been deleted and a restart before trying again.
