Keyboard lockups with OSX 10.8.2

After the 10.8.2 update, keyboard input is hanging intermittently on my 2011 MacBook Air. It occurs in several applications (have tested with Safari and App Store) and often when switching windows or input fields. The keyboard input just stops working for a few seconds, then some of the typed text is input at the cursor.
Also, sometimes when opening a new tab in Safari, a window pops up complaining about a bluetooth headset. Maybe this is linked somehow?
Anyone else experiencing the same?

I've been following this discussion due to keyboard problem after update to 10.8.2.
Using original USB keyboard (MB110LL/A) with keypad supplied with 2008 iMac.
Problem: number keys (only on the keypad) fail after login, after updating to 10.8.2. Keypad numbers work as usual when entering system password at startup.
Solution: tested keyboard at Apple Store & it works fine on their 10.8 demo machines. Purchased new keyboard to try (MB110LL/B), & that solves problem. After 4+ years, original needed retirement anyway.
Refer to "Difference between MB110LL/A and MB110LL/B" discussion in Apple Store,
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB110LL/B/apple-keyboard-with-numeric-keypad?f node=56
Time will tell if others with older iMacs encounter the same problem.

  • Do the new slim USB keyboards work with OSX 10.4.7?

    Hi everyone,
I really want to get one of those new slim apple USB keyboards for my iMac, but it says on its product description page that the system requirements are OSX 10.4.10. I have 10.4.7 running on my iMac, don't want to update it coz my everything is working perfectly and my theory is if it ain't broke, why fix it? So was wondering if I did get the keyboard anyway, would it work with 10.4.7?
I do hear horror stories of people updating their software and having nightmarish problems thereafter, thats why am very cautious about updating my software, as currently I am in a real sweet spot of stability, and don't want to upset that.
Thanks for your responses in advance!

Well I got the slim keyboard (love it), and did the updates till 10.4.10 as required. It all went ok, but got blue screen of death after the quicktime update, and had to do a hard reset (my first ever on my iMac), and is all ok now - so far...
But! The best bit was - the Gfx card performance is up 20% :))
(I do graphics work, ran a couple of tests after the updates. Neat!)
The updates probably had a Gfx card driver update...
I guess its win win all round, just hope i don't have any stability issues now - fingers crossed!

So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8.  I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer.  What do I do?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.

I have a macbook pro with OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 and some keys randomly are not working. Specifically, the enter/return button, the "p", "0", ";", and all the function keys.  What's really weird is that happens randomly.  I've never spilled anything on it, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix this.  Can anyone help?  of course this happened after my warranty expired.

    **update**
I don't know if this will help someone but I am posting this for that purpose.  In the past when I first had this problem, I'd read a post somewhere (sorry, long ago, don't have the link) where an individual was having the same problem and they stated that when the MBP got heated, that's when the keys would stop working, and they went into the MBP and jiggle some stuff around (a specific wire, I'm not electronically inclined so I know NOT of what they spake!).  Well I didn't want to do that but it always stuck in the back of my mind.  I had given up, really, and was planning to take my MBP to the apple store.  But by chance one night I left my MBP on the floor where it's cool, and when I turned it on, the problem went - poof! It seems there was some validity to the post that spoke about heat, because my problems started when I would stream foreign dramas on my MBP for hours at night, and I would hear the fan going off all the time, and in the mornings, my "p", "enter", "0", ";", and all the function keys would stop working.
So, maybe try keeping the MBP in a cool place when it's off.  Since I've started doing this overnight every night (keeping it on the cool floor, out of reach of any big feet), I have not had a single problem with my keyboard.
    Hopefully this might help someone.

  • Mac mini USB keyboard crashes with DAC

Hi,  I recently bought a DAC (Musical Paradize MP-D1), and connected that to my 2012 mac mini (core i5 with OSX 10.8).  However my USB keyboard (with trackpoint built in, and windows compatible, but I had used it without problems) became frozen after the DAC was connected.   I could still use my Remote Ipad app to control the itunes, but just that the key board wouldnt respond.  If I unplug the DAC, the keyboard can function normally again.
I am wondering if I should change to a bluetooh mouse+keyboard to avoid this porblem, or is there anyway to sort this out.
    Appreciate any help.

I think it's likely a USB power issue, one way to check, using iPad to control it, At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>USB, look for something like this...

  • Audio/midi interface for macbook pro with OSX 10.7.4?

I have been running Sibelius and GarageBand with my keyboard and sometimes vocals in my  imac with OSX 10.6 via an old Tascam US-122 interface. I now have a new MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.4, and am set up to run Sibelius and Logic Pro 9, but I can't seem to find a compatible audio/midi interface. There is plenty of discussion on M-Audio's site, but as of May '12, still incompatible. Ideas? Thanks. John

Yeah, the new MacBooks are USB3 i.e. you have to be careful which interface you use as some of them don't work yet.
Personally I have a NI Tracktor control 2 for live work ( works with USB 3 but no midi ) and a Focusrite Saffire for recording. My Saffire however is Firewire.
I do know that the Focusrite Saffire 6 is now working on USB 3 though. http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/saffire-6-usb  + it works with Mountain Lion.
Sadly though it's still a backward compatible USB 2 inteface, but... if you're only recording Guitar and vox, this really won't matter to be honest.
Also I'd recommend Focusrite over M-Audio gear any day of the week.

  • Replaced 4 GB with 8 GB and still slow with OSX 10.9.5

I have an early 2011 Mac Book Pro, with OSX 10.9.5.  Was very slow in boot up and especially with Microsoft Office applications.  I replaced the 4GB memory with 8 GB.  This does not seem to have helped.  Any suggestions?

Realized that I was not logged in when I emailed you.  Thanks for your response.

  • Anyone NOT having Keyboard problems with newer MBP!

After reading about all the keyboard problems on the newer MBPs, is there anyone NOT having keyboard lockups or dropping letter problems? Looking to purchase a MBP soon but after reading about the many keyboard problems I will probably postpone or decide to get a different machine.

There might be a couple of things to try. You could borrow an external keyboard to use for a while--or even buy a cheap one used, and see if you still have problems or not. If you don't, there's likely a problem with the MBP keyboard itself.
Also, if you have access to an Apple Store, you might be able to make an appointment with the genius bar and get a definite diagnosis. It may be possible to arrange to get in a replacement keyboard at the Apple Store and have them fix it while you wait. Don't know for sure if that would be possible, but it's worth asking. Same with an Apple authorized repair shop--it might be possible to get it fixed without having to send it off.
    Good luck!

  • Mac with OSX 10.5 and want to go to 10.6 - can I buy and download 10.6 somewhere or can I only buy it in a store?

I run a Mac with OSX 10.5 and want to go to 10.6 because I want to get trackpad and wireless keyboard to work - can I buy and download 10.6 somewhere or can I only buy it in a store?

You can also buy it in Apple or  resellers' stores - the cost is pretty much the same everywhere: $29. And, as far as I know, the latest retail version is 10.6.3, so you will need to update to 10.6.8 via the combo version in Software Update (or download it from the Apple website and install it). You'll need to do this in order to get the App Store which, in turn, is what you need to buy Lion if you want.
Edit: Make sure your Mac meets the system requirements for either SL and/or Lion.

I had a Tascam US 122 usb interface, but it didn't work with OSX Mavericks. What model would work with this? Would the US-144 mkii work with my system?
    Thanks!

You didn't mention the kind of track in GB you are trying to create, but if you are connecting the keyboard with a guitar chord to the Tascam, you will need to set up a Real Instrument Track in GB to hear anything. If your keyboard has a midi out, use a midi cable to the midi input of the Tascam, create Software Instrument Track, and you will hear something. But with a guitar chord, it won't send the right signal to a Software Instrument Track. The headphone jack in the Tascam monitors the signal coming back to it out of GB (if you choose the US-122 as your monitor in GB's preferences), so you wouldn't hear your keyboard if the track is not set up correctly. It could be the drivers, but since you didn't mention the type of keyboard or the type of GB track, I thought that might be a possible answer as well.

MacBook Pro 8,1 – Intel Core i5 – 2.23 GHz (early 2011) New with OSX 10.6 – current on all updates.
I successfully installed rEFit. I used Boot Camp to install Win 7.  All was great.
Then installed debian 6.  Somehow after the debian install and restart (I know this sounds crazy) but I am now reduced to Win 7 only. rEFit is not present when rebooting nor is OSX or debian. Further, I am unable to force the install DVD to launch when rebooting, by holding C, D or F8.  The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock. I have attempted the root and local pw- no go. Restart holding D takes me to the windows boot manager. I have attempted several options within the Advanced Options; including – Repair Your computer, safe mode and “last known good config,” All of which did nothing.
I can see all my OSX files within win7. I tried to install the OSX within windows. Ya right, that did nothing..
I only desire to get back to OSX...
    What are my options??

Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
    You could replace the drive.

Is this holding option while booting?
There was someone else around here who hosed their Mac with a Linux disk too. Try to find it.

It's possible to download mail accounts hosted in my isp and redistribut'em in my lan with OsX Server with it's own mail server?
The scope is not to have a local server mail because we have ADSL and sometimes the line broke up...
We prefere have mail hosted more securely in our external isp.
But an internal mail server is a commodity very useful...
Sorry if the questions is answered before...

I've got the Audiotron working again. I found some info on basically opening the entire share to guest access. Reference this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=392697
I tried changing "encrypt passwords" (global section) to "no" and that didn't help. Then I added this to the music share and everything works. Probably not the best security solution, but I'm behind a firewall.
In /etc/smb.conf added for the music share:
    public = yes
    only guest = no
    writable = no
    printable = no
(I still left "encrypt passwords = no" in the global section. I'm not sure if that made a difference or not.)

  • Mac Mini with OSX server still OK?

    HI All,
I was going to purchase the mac mini that was geared up to work best with OSX server however that option is now no longer available and the mac mini's have downgraded slightly in terms of quadcore processors and 2tb harddrives.
We run a small design studio, file sharing is becoming a large hinderance on workflow and I thought OSX server sounded like a good solution for someone with little knowledge of the area. We have four imacs, and three macbooks. Our team is growing fairly quick and that number should double next year.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

Just get the latest mac mini, add some external storage with a Thunderbolt 2 connection and that setup will work great for filesharing.
You will get gigabit network speeds and since it's Thunderbolt 2 the mac mini will have no problem to serve those files across the network.
Make sure you get external storage with a decent RAID setup like a Promise Pegasus for instance, and invest in a good back-up solution.
Then clone your mac mini OSX Server setup daily towards the RAID and you're good to go!
Get a Mac Mini with an SSD or Fusion Drive and 16GB of RAM. That'll keep you going for the next couple of years easy!
    Goodluck!
    Jeffrey
