Keyboard missing letter keys

I have a Satellite L505 and the actual letter keys have come off (h, j, k, l, and one Alt key).  Can the keys be replaced?

  • A1242 Keyboard - missing vital keys

Although it can increase a writer's speed considerably, this compact keyboard that ships with new iMacs is missing some important keys that are critical for persons who edit documents using Word 2008, TextEdit, and other programs. Gone missing are Page Up, Page Down, End, Home, Insert, and Delete. Most problematical is that the new keyboard renamed the Backspace key common on older keyboards to Delete and one now has no single delete key for erasing material to the right of the cursor. If you want to delete characters (or a word) to the right, you have to press Fn>Delete, two-step process.
Has anyone found a way that the A1242 can have these important editing functions? Thanks very much.

The Apple USB Keyboard with numeric keypad is an optional configuration during the purchase of an iMac at no additional charge. If your purchase is recent perhaps Apple will switch the keyboard for you.

  • New keyboard missing apple key

I Couldn't find a generic field to post this in but as I have a Mac mini I will stick it in here..........
Any-how can anyone tell me why in Gods name have Apple dropped the apple key in favor of a "cmd" key, its just not right.
When talking shortcuts in Quark or Photoshop I always describe them both to others and to myself as "apple v" etc etc.
I cant see the point of it all, if its for p.c. users benefit then so what they already have to change everything else in there general operation anyhow so why o why punish us old school users with a change that was just fine as it was to me and to all other mac users I know.
    Please give it back!!

It's most commonly been referred to as the 'command key' but you're right - on most Apple keyboards through the years, it has carried both command and Apple logos.
As to why Apple have dropped the Apple logo from this key on the new keyboards, is anyone's guess, but clearly they have despite the fact that many people have traditionally (but incorrectly) referred to it as the 'Apple key'. I suspect because Apple didn't call it that themselves, they saw no reason for others to!

  • New super-compact alu keyboard: missing arrow keys

with the former large alu keyboard i got used to the arrow keys that go all the way up / very bottom / 1 page up / 1 page down. i tried a few clicks on the 4 ordinary arrows holding ctrl / shft / cmd / alt in various combinations while pushing an arrow key at each time but it wouldn't give me what i'm looking for. any suggestions?

    ANOTHER FUNCTION KEY ISSUE HERE...
I have some software with an F10 key shortcut, which, on my new iMac, is also the mute botton. I can't get the shortcut in the program to work. Any thoughts?

  • Is there a solution for the missing letter in the Arabic keyboard , IPhone 4s Os 5??

Is there a solution for the missing letter in the Arabic keyboard , IPhone 4s Os 5??

Please specify the letter you think is missing.  You should be able to find all letters you need by holding down keys which generate popup menus to give you additional options.

No, it's not.  You get extra letters by holding down the existing keys and selecting them from the popup menu which appears.

  • By default, on a mac keyboard F3 lets you see all the open apps and the such. However, I changed it so that I use those keys for keyboard shortcuts; But i'd like the normal F3 key to still work without me having to press FN.

    rajlego,
in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button.

If you're sure you followed the steps under, "Some keys don't work as expected", check also System Preferences > Speech > Speech Recognition > Listening Key. If that's not it, then, no, I can't think of anything else except taking it to the store.

  • The letter keys on my MacBook have stopped working and the trackpad (or external mouse) are treating a single finger click as a double finger click

The letter keys have stopped working on my MacBook. Number keys and punctuation keys seem to work fine. Also, the trackpad treats a single finger click as a two-finger click. I tried an external mouse and this does the same.
If I restart, the mouse works fine but after a few minutes the issue starts. I have looked at a few forums and have checked the settings under system preferences but nothing jumps out at me :-(
    Any ideas???

Is this one of the MacBooks with a removeable battery? If so, try removing the battery and restarting the MacBook (obviously while plugged in to an AC adapter) and test to see if you still have this issue. Other users have reported that swollen expanding batteries have caused keyboard and trackpad problems.
If that isn't it, let us know, we'll keep helping you.
    Best of luck.

  • Baffling problems with letter key and erratic keybinds

I'm not even certain how to explain my issue. I was in the middle of typing an explanation to a friend in IM when I discovered that any attempt to press 'v' key resulted in a copy/paste of the URL I had attempted to send to him before. I checked to see if either of the keys included in the copy/paste keybind were somehow stuck, but the command key initially appeared to be operating normally; it was only that particular letter key that posed a problem. After restoring the default keyboard settings, turning off all of options in the 'speech' toolbar, and updating my software, I found that my computer would now paste text if I pressed either my v OR the command key on the left of the space bar. I could also occasionally type a normal letter if I held down my left click. I'm a bit baffled. Is this a sign of a dying keyboard, or..?

Is this in Leopard or on the iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.2) = Tiger computer?
Does it do this if running in Safe Mode (hold down shift key while starting, be very patient)?

  • All Letter Keys Stop Working

this has happened to me twice this week. and i don't know what is causing it.
i will be in the middle of working and all of a sudden all the letter keys stop working (i.e. i can't type anything)
However, the mouse still works, the arrow keys still work, the modifier keys still work... it's just the letter keys that stop working.
A simple Relaunch of Finder seems to do the trick, but i'm just curious how this problem is happening...
Any info on this would be great!
    Thanks!

    What system is this on?
It sounds like you're activating the numeric keypad that's overlayed on the standard keyboard. If this is a PowerBook or MacBook it's toggled by pressing the F6 key on the keyboard. When it's on (the key lights up), all the letter keys are disabled and only the keys with the subscript numbers and math operators are active.

  • HT5636 I am using an Apple keyboard with numeric key pad.

I have a new Mac OSX 10.9.2. I am using Bootcamp to run WIndows 8.1.
I have just connected a new USB Apple keyboard with numeric key pad.
All works fine in OSX. But in windows the numeric numbers on the keypad wont work.
Numlock appears to work, but nothing happens when the number keys are pressed.
The keys / * - +and entre all work ok. Just not the numbers.
MIcrosoft SUPPORT REFUSED to help me because i am using a mac, they claim it is a hardware problem.

I would look for a program which would display the ascii value of typed letters
if i had the letter the key send one can assign that value to any other function one wish
    https://www.google.dk/search?q=program+which+display+the+acsii+of+typed+letters& oq=program+which+display+the+acsii+of+typed+letters&aqs=chrome..69i57.11855j0j4& sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8#q=program+which+display+the+ascii+of+typed+let ters&spell=1
if the program would get no ascii value from the num keyboard then I suppose ms were correct
if not then there are tons of free programs to reassign keys as one see fit
and even if they were not to work one can do it manually in regedit in windows

  • New Apple Keyboard and Insert Key

I'm using the new Apple Keyboard (http://www.apple.com/keyboard/) and I'm quite happy with it. The only big disadvantage is the missing Insert-Key, the Apple Keyboard has a function (fn) Key, where the insert-key is normally located. I need the insert-key especially for selecting in midnight commander. What would be the best way to remap the insert-key to the fn-key for console and X-Windows?

Here are some relevant other threads:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56619
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=55482
These are just threads I've participated in; I'm sure there are more. The bottom line is: check with showkey (in the Linux console) or xev (in X) to see how the fn key is getting recognized. If it's working just like another key on the keyboard, e.g., like space or shift, then you can remap it the same way you'd remap any key. (The process is different for Linux console than for X.) But most likely it's not working just like another key on the keyboard, in which case it will be difficult/impossible to remap it to insert. However, you could always choose another key, or key combination, to remap to insert. Perhaps even a key combination of the form fn+KEY. The kernel won't recognize fn as a modifier like shift or control, but it should recognize SOME fn+KEY combinations as being SOME keyboard keys. For example, on my keyboard fn+left arrow is recognized as Home. I think that as far as the kernel and all the key-remapping tools can tell, I only pressed Home on my keyboard not any combination including left arrow.

  • Two letter-keys suddenly behaving strange

Please help! i've looked all over the web, but cannot seem to find anyone with the similar problem. Ok, here's the dealio:
Two months ago I bought a used mid-2011 Macbook Air (13" / 4gb /128 gb) for my girlfriend. Everything has worked fine and we/she has been very happy with it. But then, a couple of days ago, she tells me that the key for the letter 'B' suddenly has stopped working. Please note that the mac has never left our house, it has been sitting on the couch all the time (where she does her surfing), nothing has been spilled on it and nothing out of the ordinary has happened, neither software- or hardware-wise.
I found this very odd, and preceeded to investigate. After a while I also notice that the key for the norwegian letter 'Å' (the key next to the letter P) is also not working. At first I am dreading that the keys have "died" and I have to get an expensive keyboard repair. But then I opened Keyboard viewer, and to my relief I see that both keys are actually responsive, but when I press the disfunctional letter keys the Command-keys also get highlighted in the Keyboard viewer. I was thinking; "Hmm.. Very strange, but this can probably be fixed" but apparently it's not that easy..
I have done all the troubleshooting I can come across, nothing works! So tonight I got to the last resort: Format the HD and do a clean install of OSX..
    STILL THE SAME!! Arrrgh
So please, does anyone have any clue to what is going on?
I might add that the keys are working with external keyboards, so it's probably something with the hardware on the macbook.
And even if this actually is a faulty keyboard or something, how can this happen totally out of the blue?? How can two keys all of a sudden get "connected" to the command-keys? (Command-keys are working as normal, btw..)
Any tips before I send it to repair?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, and please excuse my english
    Cheers,
    TheUlser

Try an external keyboard.  If it works ok, the internal one is most likely damaged and needs repair.

  • Keyboard losing its keys!

    Hi there,
I just got the i5 Macbook Pro 2.53 gh and I'm having trouble with the keyboard. The same thing happens for at least 10 letter keys: when I press the lower left corner of the key (when typing), the upper right corner (opposite) pops out of its socket. Sometime, the whole right side becomes loose and I can actually lift the key and see the backlighting led.
    Is that a common problem?

No, it isn't. You clearly have a hardware issue, and your warranty will cover it.
