Keyboard modifier key remap suddenly not working

I am using a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I use a third-party USB keyboard that is laid out (naturally) Windows-style, with the Alt keys inside (closer to the space bar than) the “Windows logo” keys. I use the Modifier Keys button in the Keyboard preference panel to remap these to the standard Mac configuration, with the Command keys on the inside and the Option keys on the outside.
Today those modifier keys are suddenly reversed back to the default Windows layout. The Keyboard panel still shows my preferred (remapped) configuration, but it is not being honored. I have tried reverting to the default layout and then back again, I have rebooted the system, nothing works—the modifier keys are still stuck in the Windows configuration. I rely heavily on keyboard macros in my work, most of which use the modifier keys, and those keystrokes are built into my fingers as second nature. The reversed modifier keys are driving me crazy. Please help: what can I do to make the keyboard honor my settings in the Keyboard preference panel?

Same problem here. Been working fine for a couple years and now suddenly the modifier key mapping is being ignored.

Regards,

Hi Nagasree,
Welcome to MSDN forums.
First, please make sure the Chrome and Firefox is supported by cross browser testing.
Latest version of Chrome and Firefox supported by cross browser testing are Chrome version 38.0.2125.111 and
Firefox 33.
I doubt whether Chrome and Firefox in cross browser testing don’t support automating modifier keys or there is anything wrong on it if you are using supported browser. Since this issue is related to the Extensions tool
Selenium components for Coded UI Cross Browser Testing, if possible, I suggest you post this
issue here, click “Q AND A”, and then you could post this issue there, you would get dedicated
support there.
Thanks for your understanding.

• Can't sign in (user id); keyboard has keys that do not work (can't type password)

After about 20 days of inactivity, I went so sign in to my MacBook. I selected my user id, and the password box comes up. I cannot type in my password, because it contains the key "M". "M" is no longer working on my keyboard. So I am not sure if the keyboard or the actual user id is the problem.
Any ideas?

• Modifier Keys suddenly not working with Numberpads

I favor the use of a numberpad and as such i have been using a third party USB Numberpad. I also have a Apple wired keyboard that comes with the number pad.
All these while, the modifier keys (shift, alt, ctrl) works with the numberpad and the numberpad section of the apple keyboard. Somehow, recently, not sure when, it no longer works.
I've tried to reset default on the modifier key section but it just doesn't work... This is really frustrating. the only thing i remember installing lately is "bettertouchtool" and buying a magic mouse.
Bettertouchtool is not usually running unless i choose to run it, so i'm not sure how that affecs it, not am i sure if totally removing it via a third party app helps.
Appreciate HELP! PLEASE!

i am having the same problem. It just started a few days ago. Im thinkin its a problem with the most recent update. Im goin to contact apple to let them know. I'll post again when i hear something. If anyone figures it out before then please let us know!

Underscrore key suddenly not working.
17" PB 3.5 yrs old. Is it one key? Entire Keyboard? Something else?
How do I replace? One key? Entire KB?
Cheers,

one key can't be replaced, if it's caused by a bad keyboard, then the whole keyboard gets replaced.
sometimes could be caused by bad cable connection, but it's likely a bad keyboard.

• HELP! Brightness Keys (F1, F2) & Audio Keys (F10-12) Suddenly Not Working!

Hello all.
Just a while ago I was toying inside After Effects CS3 to try and access their own Keyboard Shortcuts instead of the default system's Keyboard Shortcuts (E.G. inside AE, F2 would be deselect all, while in general F2 is Brighter)
(See this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1337330)
Inside AE preferences there was a check/uncheck 'Use System Shortcut Keys', I checked it and was able to use AE's shortcut keys.
*Then all of a sudden these common keys lost their functions!! --*
*Brightness Keys F1 & F2*
*Audio Keys - F10, F11 and F12!*
Even when I uncheck or turn off AE's box of 'Use System Shortcut Keys' and quit the application, I even restart the iMac and unplug the keyboard, but the above common keys are still not working!!
These general keys are more useful and important to me than inside AE's, which I only use once in a blue blue moon.
*So how do I get these shortcut keys back??? Help please*
Thanks a lot and cheers!!

Hi all
Oh dear another me blunder again... apparently I have checked in the 'Keyboard' tab inside System Preferences "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys..."
Actually even all through these, I am still a bit confused in setting up all these keyboard shortcuts, or rather, setting the ones I need and I would use... especially with the new keyboard that have some "pre-determined" keys already in place... and seems not able to turn them off...
Cheers

If they do nothing at all, double check system preferences/speech and make sure they have not somehow gotten set as the trigger for Text to speech or speech recognition, etc.
Also try an external keyboard. If it works ok, then your internal keyboard is probably damaged and needs repair or replacement.

• Home Keys on Laptop not working sometimes

Good Day,
Our HP Pavilion G4-2013TX's keyboard acts up sometimes. The Home keys (i.e., A S D F J K L and semi colon) keys sometimes do not work. I just have to wait a bit or furiously press them to get them to work again.
The keys are working currently (this message is evidence.) I don't know how to invoke the error at the moment.
Please help. I've been getting instances that I need to have a good working keyboard but the homekeys don't cooperate. A Sort of troll, actually.
Thanks in advance,

• A few keys on the Integrated key board do not work help

After much trial and error I have found that there is no way for me to fix the fact that my qwertyuio keys on the integrated keyboard do not work....I have not taken my MBP to my local store yet because I have many projects and papers due this week and kinda need it. Luckily i have a bluetooth keyboard that works fine but i do not feel like bringing it everywhere with me in order to work on these papers and projects...where I live in not exactly the quietest place and I would like to go to the library on campus...does not work with those keys not working considering i can type four of the five vowels in the english language

Hello Hickster and welcome the Apple Support Forums,
It definitely sounds like a hardware problem so these things probably won't work but you can try:
Reset PRAM (hold the command-option-p-r during boot up after the chime)
open a new account and see if the problem persists.
go to keyboard preferences and make sure all the keyboard modifier keys are set to default
start the machine in Safe mode by holding the Shift key while it starts.
You could try to reset the SMC by turning off the machine and removing the battery and power cord, holding the power button for 5 secs then putting it all back together.
Like I said, these are unlikely to work but are pretty safe to do. That being said I highly recommend you make a complete cloned backup to another drive before you start messing around with key combinations etc. Be sure to make a back up before you take it in. Specifically back up all the papers you're working on to a thumb drive or some easily accessible media in case there is a problem.
You could then work on your papers with the Library machines (export your files to windows friendly on the thumb drive) while you wait for your MBP to get fixed.
If you still have applecare that is the way to go but if not then you could try to follow the iFixit guides for removing the keyboard and re-installing it to see if it just needed to be reseated. If you have applecare you will void it by doing that so make sure you don't void your warrantee.
Hope you get things figured out.

• Keyboard Modifier Keys trouble

Hi!
I have gotten a new problem, I never had before.
While having an external USB-keyboard plugged in, I swapped the Option and Command keys here:
System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard -> Modifier Keys
(I find this useful when I use external PC keyboards via KVM switches and such, as they have the Windows key and Alt key opposite, at least on Norwegian keyboards.)
And usually that only applies to the external keyboard. But now, on my new macbook, it now applies to the built in keyboard. And I am not able to turn it off. Or: When I turn it off or choose Restore Defaults, nothing happens. Even though Command is listed as the Command key, Option still works as the Command key, and Option as the Command key.
So, does anyone know if there's a file I might delete or modify or something?
flips 8)

It seems the settings are stored in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences.<UUID>.plist
First I deleted both com.apple.keyboard.modifiermapping trees/entries.
Then I re-entered the correct setting for only the external keyboard. (My guess is that I just overlooked the option of changing mapping for just one of the keyboards or "All".) Still I would consider it a bug not being able to reverse the setting without manually deleting it from the correct plist file ...

Hello momomhammed:
I think you forgot to type in HP g6 1239as because I could not find HP g6 123sa. This is the only steps they give for your lat top. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01458194&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=uk&dlc=en&lc... I would do the reset direction first then do the update drives for it. To see if that fixes the issue. If it doesn't then yout computer needs repairing. frrw.

I have a macbook pro with OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 and some keys randomly are not working. Specifically, the enter/return button, the "p", "0", ";", and all the function keys. What's really weird is that happens randomly. I've never spilled anything on it, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix this. Can anyone help? of course this happened after my warranty expired.

**update**
I don't know if this will help someone but I am posting this for that purpose. In the past when I first had this problem, I'd read a post somewhere (sorry, long ago, don't have the link) where an individual was having the same problem and they stated that when the MBP got heated, that's when the keys would stop working, and they went into the MBP and jiggle some stuff around (a specific wire, I'm not electronically inclined so I know NOT of what they spake!). Well I didn't want to do that but it always stuck in the back of my mind. I had given up, really, and was planning to take my MBP to the apple store. But by chance one night I left my MBP on the floor where it's cool, and when I turned it on, the problem went - poof! It seems there was some validity to the post that spoke about heat, because my problems started when I would stream foreign dramas on my MBP for hours at night, and I would hear the fan going off all the time, and in the mornings, my "p", "enter", "0", ";", and all the function keys would stop working.
So, maybe try keeping the MBP in a cool place when it's off. Since I've started doing this overnight every night (keeping it on the cool floor, out of reach of any big feet), I have not had a single problem with my keyboard.
Hopefully this might help someone.

• Changing keyboard modifier keys

I use an editor (EMACS) which makes major use of the 'ctrl' key so I swap it with the 'caps lock' key so my little finger can hit it without getting a cramp. It works just fine about 90% of the time but the other 10%, when I hit the 'caps lock' key instead of getting the 'ctrl' function I get the 'caps lock' function and my editing screws up terribly. It is really frustrating because if I don't notice, and if I hit what I think is <ctrl>k to kill a line I get a 'K' in the text instead.
PowerBook G4

I solved this problem by finding and altering an applescript that will change the keyboard modifier keys. I wish I could still find the web page so I could post it, but here's the applescript I used to change to PC layout:
tell application "System Preferences"
activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.keyboard"
end tell
tell application "System Events"
tell process "System Preferences"
click radio button "Keyboard" of tab group 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "Modifier Keys…" of tab group 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click pop up button 3 of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click menu item 4 of menu 1 of pop up button 3 of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
delay 1
click pop up button 4 of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click menu item 3 of menu 1 of pop up button 4 of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "OK" of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
end tell
end tell
tell application "System Preferences"
quit
end tell
(end of script)
And here's the script I used to change it back to Mac layout:
tell application "System Preferences"
activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.keyboard"
end tell
tell application "System Events"
tell process "System Preferences"
click radio button "Keyboard" of tab group 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "Modifier Keys…" of tab group 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "Restore Defaults" of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "OK" of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
end tell
end tell
tell application "System Preferences"
quit
end tell
(end of script)
I saved the scripts as executibles with neat Apple and XP custom icons and put them in the Dock. Pretty slick.

• How to fix my iPhone keys that will not work

When I am using my iphone keyboard, the upper row Q thru P will not work. That is in verticle mode, when laid horizontally, the R will not work.
On the number keys, the 4 will not work. The comma key also does not work.
I was told that a software restore could cure this. Also, I tried to load the new version 7 software, hoping this might help. But the Accept option would not work when accepting the TERMS from Apple. It seems that only works in verticle so that whole row/area does not work.

RESET DEVICE
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).

• Help! My MacBook is all of a sudden not working. I can login to my account but as soon as I do that the screen goes completely white. I can change the volume and I have a mouse but that is it. I've tried safe starting my computer and that doesn't work.

Help! My MacBook is all of a sudden not working past the login page. A white screen comes up that I cannot get rid of. I attempted a safe start up and that failed as well. It's a white screen where I have a mouse and when I click the volume buttons I can hear it working but nothing else just white. Please help.

Something you can try is resetting it all Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings. Or go to Settings > Store & sign out & log back in. Another thing you can do is restore your ipod. This has happened to me but the only thing i did was that i created a new account but try doing the things above i just told you. :)
