Keyboard monitoring VIs: revisited!

Hello everybody!
I keep hearing in this list about some VIs which monitor the keyboard
and exist in a OS-independent version (e.g. with CINs for "all" OS's),
what would be appreciated to write portable VIs.
My problem is, no matter where I search, I can't find it. Do this VIs
exist, and if YES, where to find them????
If they don't exist, why are people all the time talking about it?
Probably because it would be a nice feature!!! (Please, NI, put it with
high priority on the wish list!).

I only find

I found one article in the knowledgebase pointing to the NI Developer
Zone, which offers again the same libraries.

please find attached the HTML - print of this file; zipped together, that you get an idea how it looks in LabVIEW 6.1. I have tested this vi on Win98 & NT4 - works properly...........

C-series CIMC IP without keyboard/Monitor

Hi,
Is there any way to assign CIMC IP to C-series server without connecting keyboard and Monitor. (eg via serial port or LOM ports.)

I think (unless I am confused with another config option) there is an old way to do it through the use of an script, that I saw back in CIMC 1.3 but I have never seen a single customer doing that; either they were not aware, the process is way more complex than attaching a monitor and simply did not know.
I have never done it and I am not sure it can still be done, I would need to check, but certainly it is a lot easier to just plug in a monitor and keyboard.

MacBook run with case closed and external Keyboard/Monitor/Mouse?

I am interested to know if the MacBook will run with the case closed (with power connected and an external mouse/keyboard/video)?
The iBooks did not, the PowerBooks did. It is a feature I use all the time with my Powerbook.

It's documented by Apple to work that way and I've not heard any reports of it failing once the criteria were spelled out to the person who needed lid-closed operation.
But I don't believe this prevents idle time-out sleep (only the sleep otherwise induced by closing the lid). Are you referring to it entering sleep due to the idle time-out expiring?

Tower shuts down when monitor is plugged in.

I recently unplugged my monitor from my powermac G4 while moving the computer and when I tried to turn it back on it wouldn't start at all. I checked all connections and realized that the tower will turn on but once I plug the monitor into the back, the computer shuts down and makes a small click like a fan is stuck. I've tried reseating the graphis card and also resetting the button next to the battery.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That's usually a classic symptom of the need for a PMU reset/loss of startup memory, although it could also be related to a deeper issue.
One more try...
Deep reset the logic board:
Disconnect everything from the QS but the power cord.
Touch a metal slot cover on the rear of the Mac.
Disconnect the power cord.
Open the side door.
Remove the battery.
Reset the PMU, holding it down for a five count.
Depress the power button on the front of the Mac, holding it in for a five count.
Take a thirty minute break, to insure the capacitors fully discharge.
Reinsert the battery.
Close up, hook up, and attempt to boot normally.
No luck? Pull the battery out and attempt to boot.
No luck? Disconnect everything but the power cord, including the keyboard, monitor and mouse. Disconnect the internal drive cables. Attempt startup and listen for the startup chime. If it chimes, give it a few seconds and just shut down with the front power button.

Good 2nd Monitor for FCX.

Im looking to get a new 2nd monitor for my FCX set up.
Currently I have a Cinema 23" as my main and and old Sony Crt ref monitor vis a PCI Blackmagic card.
I want to get a HD monitor.
Ive just tried a Ezio CS230 £600 monitor but had trouble with blacklight bleed on 2 differant screens.
Not sure if this comes with the price range, but it was horrid when working on dark material.
I havent a huge budget and would like the smallest screen size if poss, around 15- 24" max.
I know you need to spend loads for a "proper" colour grading monitor, but there must be something around the £700-£1000 that will have good blacks with out
all the back lighting.??
I would like to do some basic colour grading. It mainly for DVD and music videos.etc.
Any advice much apprieciated.

So am I the only person using a second monitor...???????

Monitor enlarges display unexpectedly and goes black

I have had my preferences set for a long time, for display to 'sleep' after 5 min. Recently for no reason while I am working with mouse or keyboard, monitor will enlarge the screen image as it goes black.
Sometimes, I can turn the monitor off and then back on to resolve the issue.
Other times, I have to turn the monitor off and on 3-4 times.
If that doesn't work, I have to push the shut down button on the PowerMac,
and then push it right back on.
Recently, I also got a message to set date and time manually as these were prior to current date. Someone has replied to that issue that a failing pram battery could be the cause.
Could the battery be affecting function of the monitor as well?
How can I troubleshoot the problem?

I assume that the display is a CRT-type and not an LCD. From your description of the picture enlarging and then the display going black, I'd suspect a problem with the flyback transformer, which is responsible for producing/regulating the high voltage that drives the screen. Needing to repeatedly power OFF/ON the display to bring the screen back would support this diagnosis. Because of the shock hazard associated with diagnosing/repairing this portion of a CRT display, a trained professional should do it. It would be less expensive to replace it with a flat-screen display, than pay for the repair.

Charger dies when external devices connected or keyboard used

My wife ran the battery down on her 1.8G PowerBook, while on travel with Bluetooth & AirPort on. Returning home she connected it as normal to her remote keyboard, internet, printers and external monitor. When attached, the charging indicator would first be green for a second, then orange for about 5 seconds, then off. Disconnecting the keyboard & monitor, and turning Bluetooth & Airport off allowed it to continue to charge (orange) until the mouse or keyboard was used, then the charging indicator would go out again.
Any suggestions?

You don't mention how long you attempted to charge with nothing connected. Sometimes a battery can be so low that it needs to charge without powering anything...in other words, try charging for a couple hours or overnight with the computer off and nothing connected to it other than the power cord. An SMC reset prior to doing this may also help. If the problem is simply that the battery was very low, the combination of SMC reset and overnight charging with no power drain should get you back to normal.
If that doesn't work, you may need a new battery.

Sharing a monitor

I have a G4 (467 MHz) that boots OS 9. I am planning on getting a mini to do some video work that my G4 can't do. Yet, I still need the G4 for some programs that only run on OS 9. In an effort to save money, I plan to use my current keyboard/mouse and monitor with the mini. Is there a way to 'share' the monitor with out disconnecting/connecting it?

You can certainly do this - a KVM box can provide switching between two systems sharing the same keyboard, monitor and mouse. The only problem may be the nature of connections available on it since your mini uses USB to connect keyboard and mouse and DVI or VGA to connect the display. Your G4 should also have USB for mouse and keyboard, but may have ADC or DVI or VGA connectors for display.
If the connectors match, then have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVM_switch for an explanation of what a KVM switch does and how it's connected, then if that seems to suit your need, pick an appropriate one. http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=143&name=KVM-Switches may be a good place to start, though they are common devices found in many computing stores.

Keyboard Short Cuts Buggy After Upgrade Too Yosemite Using Intuos 4

I upgraded my Mac to Yosemite. I am using Photoshop CS6 and Wacom Intuos 4.
Now keyboard shortcuts are buggy or don't work at all. For example brush sizes almost never changes using the right and left bracket keys. Zoom (Z Key) won't work unless I tap on the window once or twice when another tool is selected. A lot of times I have to tap the window once or twice to get shortcuts to work like S-save or W- close window.
Anyone know if this is a Yosemite/Photoshop issue or a Yosemite/Intuos issue? I tossed my Photoshop Prefs and that didn't fix the issue. Any other suggestions?
On a side note after the upgrade to Yosemite I lost my Intuos preference panel in System Preferences and cannot access or change Pen prefs anymore.

The provided links above take care of the keyboard shortcut issues. As far as Wacom missing prefs this is the information I received from tech support. I haven't actually tried this yet. I don't want to wipe out my current prefs unless I need to change something.
Thank you for contacting Wacom Customer Care. We would need to perform a clean driver install on your computer. Please make sure that you are uninstalling the previous driver in your computer prior to reinstalling a new driver as this would create corrupted driver files.
Also, please unplug the tablet from the computer before starting these instructions. Please follow these steps:
Open your Applications folder and locate any Tablet or Wacom Tablet folders you have Use the Utility in each of these folders and click ‘Remove’ under ‘Tablet Software’
Once the software is removed, restart the computer
Once this is complete, download and install the latest 6.3.10 driver from:

As always, make sure your tablet is connected directly to your computer. Avoid using USB hubs, keyboard/monitor ports, or docking stations with the tablets, as they can cause inconsistent behavior. Screen sharing without a monitor?

I've tried breifly and it didn't work but essentially I'm wanting to share the screen of a mac mini that has no screen?
I'm planning on having the mac mini in a fairly inaccessible place but would like to use it by sharing the screen on a Macbook Air or Pro.
Any ideas?

I too do this all the time with my Mac mini. I can use both the built-in Mac OS X Leopard Screen Sharing (Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server -> vnc://mac.mini.addr, as well as Chicken of the VNC and JollysFastVNC.
I connected keyboard, monitor, mouse just long enough to enable System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Management, and the VNC password. After that I removed the keyboard, monitor, and mouse.
What are your System Preferences -> Security -> Firewall settings? Is it possible that the firewall is blocking your attempts to start a screen sharing session?
Another approach is using the iChat screen sharing in conjunction with the Chax add-on for iChat and enabling the Chax auto-accept requests for remote screen sharing from a specific buddy. AOL Instant messaging accounts are free.

Monitor RT Memory when executable is running

I seem to be losing data after long or intensive use of my realtime system. The code running on the RT system is built into an executbable. Is there any way to monitor memory usage on a Real Time system (PXI-8187) while an executable is running?

Yes, you can use the RT System Manager. Open LabVIEW and go to Tools --> Real-Time Module --> System Manager. Type in the RT IP address and the TCP port configured in your project under VI Server:Configuration (default is 3363), which you need to have enabled.
Note: In System Manager, I uncheck the option to monitor VIs as I find that bogs down the system. It's checked by default.

Faulty monitor connection

I bought a new set of speakers and they worked fine.
But the next morning when I booted up my computer, the screen uploaded the apple sign and then quickly switched to a non-access sign (circle with a line through it).
I tried to put in the installation disk, but it didn't help. I also rebooted many times, unplugged everything, switched out cords from a duplicate computer...none of this helped.
Is my cpu fried?

Insure that the installation disc being used is either a retail version or the original installation disc which shipped with the Mac in question. (Be certain it's not an OEM disc which was furnished with a different Mac model.)
Disconnect your external devices, except for the keyboard, monitor, mouse, and power cord.
Try resetting PRAM and NVRAM, then starting up with the "x" key held down to see if you can force the Mac to find and boot to OS X.
If still no luck, do a PMU reset, then attempt booting to the install disc by holding down the "c" key at startup. Again, keep only the keyboard, monitor, mouse and power cord connected.
Should you get a successful boot from disc, run Disk Utility to repair the startup volume on your hard drive.

Control 2 computers w/ one BT mouse or keyboard?

Is it possible to set up Bluetooth on two or more computers so that you can use one bluetooth mouse or keyboard to control them simultaneously?

I'm confused what you mean by "control them simultaneously." That sounds like a fox in a hen house... So I'll assume you mean use them alternately.
I've participated in several threads here in the past with folks who had similar questions about using wireless devices in ~this manner. In one case, someone was having problems bringing her Bluetooth mouse and keyboard back-and-forth between work and home. I can't recall anyone who'd succeeded in working this out satisfactorily.
Two KnowledgeBase Articles address this ~indirectly:
Bluetooth: How to Delete a Paired Device says: "
"Note: Some Bluetooth devices (such as keyboards and mice) are designed to be paired and used with one computer at a time. If you pair your keyboard or mouse with another computer, delete the pairing with the original computer first. This will ensure that the device only attempts to operate with the intended computer."
As far as I can tell, this doesn't literally say you can't do it — just that there are two additional steps during each transition back and forth.
Using an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse (Bluetooth 1.5 Help) says,
" If you are setting up more than one keyboard and mouse, pair one keyboard and one mouse with a single computer. Don't use one computer to set up more than one keyboard and mouse."
Imo, it seems like a lot more trouble than it's worth — particularly given that Apple's BT keyboard and mouse aren't too expensive.
For "wired" devices, this configuration is accomplished using a KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch. I'm not very familiar with the details of these setups, but you may benefit from visiting MacInTouch's reader reports web are about Keyboard/Monitor Switches and Adapters, if you're interested.

Sun E3500 with USB Keyboard?

I've got a Sun E3500 server and have a Neuro-Logic RFT-17 Rackmount LCD Console that only has a USB connection. I know that this rackmount setup is MADE for Sun, as it is actually being sold by Sun. Are there converters to go from the Sun 8-pin layout to USB? Thanks!!

you are using a Neuro-Logic RFT-17, which is "just" a LCD display and a keyboard that fits into a rack.

According to their FAQ, two (keyboard) options for Sun are available: USB or 8-pin serial.

The User's manual isn't available for download (links returns to the same page !!!), but this is from the data sheet: "USB and Sun Serial connectors".
Using an add-in USB board (are there any for S-Bus ???) won't help to solve the issue. The OBP only supports "standard" Sun keyboards with Mini-DIN connector (this is what NLS calls 8-pin serial).
If the RFT-17 isn't equipped with USB and Mini-DIN keyboard you can take the KVM "route".
Despite the fact that a Sun server doesn't require a directly attached keyboard/monitor, these systems are managed thru network or (serial) console/management port (console server for multiple systems and capturing the console logs), you can extend your installation with an expensive (Sun certified) KVM that offers adapters for USB and Mini-DIN attached keyboards.

Monitor not detected in Windows 10

I upgraded to Windows 10 today and this monitor can't be detected when trying to add an external monitor vis settings.. It's connected, via VGAcable, to a Samsung laptop that is less than 2 years old and the monitor worked fine with Windows 8.1. Hardware detection on HP support page does nto detect the monitor either. Manual entry of w2207h finds the monitor but there is no Windows 10 option for the driver update.
Anyone else have this issue and found a way around it?
