Keyboard/Mousepad Freezes

My keyboard/mousepad freezes from time to time. I can restart via power button or simply close the lid. When I reopen the lid the optical drive makes a noise and the mac acts as if nothing ever happened and my data is OK. I don't know why the lid switch still works as a kind of "sleep" button but it does. The power button also works but you can't make any subsequent choices using the keyboard or mouse pad after the freeze. Hardware issue?

Same problem here! When I close the lid and open it up again, the keyboard and touchpad do work again. But only as long as I use them frequently. When I let keyboard and touchpad alone for a while (one minute or so) both are frozen again.
When this bug is there, I can repeat the sleep and awake method with the same result again and again. Nothing in the logs.
When touchpad and keyboard are frozen, I can still use the bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Only a restart (reboot) will help me out.
I think it was not there before 10.5.5.
I have no idea what causes the problem.
I'm using VMware Fusion. Perhaps this might be a problem when running it was a WinXP VM. (when running debian in a VM it seems to be stable).
This is AGAIN a big bug from Apple software (this seems to be no hardware bug).
I also suffer LED backlid bug (stripes from time to time).
I also suffer NVidia Softwarebug. (Graphic intense apps lead to crash. Especially when running with extern display on DVI).
Seriously disappointed now! (My old G4 powerbook was more stable).
Apple has tons of dollars at the bank. I suggest to spend some money into keeping quality high! Since the iPhone is out, so many feel it's going the wrong way with computers (let alone the missing option for mate displays).
Thanks Apple for listening and fixen these big problems.
(Steve, do a quick research for Apple freezing keyboards and touchpads - it's huge...)

  • Keyboard & Mousepad Just Freeze - HELP PLEASE

    Hey all,
Well, maybe it's a known issue but still I couldn't find any solution for this. I have a MacBook Pro 2.53 Core 2 Duo, 4GB. Running Leopard OSX. During working around with the mac and internet, the keyboard & mousepad just freezes - sometimes I wait a while (30-40 seconds I guess) and it comes right back, but sometimes (and lately most of the time) it freezes and doesn't come back no matter how long i wait for it, up to a point where I have no choice but to restart by holding the power button long enough. Besides the fact that this is very unhealthy, any work I got is just lost (if unsaved ofcourse).
    ANY help would be great.
    Thank's alot.

    Hi
Have you had a little spill recently? One you may not know about perhaps? It's also possible the Top Case has developed a fault? Or at least the trackpad and keypboard parts of it has.
Something you could quickly try is create another admin account. :ogin with it and see if the problems remains. If it goes away login with your account and create an untitled folder on the desktop. Navigate to your /Users/Home/Library/Preferences folder select all the files except for com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.dock.plist and put them into the newly created Untitled folder. Restart the mac. If any application or utility thereafter moans about a missing preference file/.plist you can easily pop it back in.
If there has been no spill and if the problem persists and if the laptop is still under warranty take it to your nearest Apple Repair Specialist. They should be able to diagnose and troubleshoot it further for you as well as replacing the parts.

  • Keyboard/Trackpad Freeze

Hello everyone. This is not something I usually do, for the most part I can solve my own mac/pc related problems but I am just about at my wits end in regards to my 2.4 Late 2008 MBP (Gen 1 unibody). Recently I have been having random keyboard/trackpad freezes that definitely put a wrench into my computer use. Nothing seems to solve the problem except time to just let it sit. I will boot up my mac just to find my cursor in the upper left corner of the screen with no way of moving it, except for an external mouse. Same scenario with the keyboard, it flat out won't work. The problem comes and goes, and is impossible for me to reproduce. The thing that really burns my toast in all this is that it happens even if I have not moved the laptop, meaning I have set it on a desk, used it, turned it off or let it sleep and when I hop back on it ceases to function. This is the one aspect that makes me think that this is not a hardware issue, that it is software. I could see this happening if I moved it, perhaps something internal shifted and voila no input devices, but thats not how it works. It just randomly stops, physical movement or not. Now, I have looked into the problem, and it is one that seemed to happen after the jump to leopard, but we are pretty far into leopard's development cycle, and this kind of thing should not be happening. The other potential issue is the top-case/keyboard have a problem and need replacing, not something I would look forward to. If anyone on here can shed some insight, or have experienced the same problem with my generation of MBP, I would appreciate hearing about it.

I've also, very recently, started having similar issues. Working along fine, then a complete system freeze. Nothing responds... no trackpad, no keyboard, nor will the system sleep when I close the computer. Only recourse is a hard re-start using the power button. The computer is rarely moved... sits on my desk most days. As I say, this has cropped up quite recently... just maybe the past few weeks... but is happening more frequently. My suspicion is also that it's software related, but I've added nothing new to my system in many months, so I don't know where to begin to look for the source of the trouble. Unlike amen001, this does not occur upon wake-up, but most other symptoms sound very familiar. Any ideas would be appreciated...

  • Trackpad and Keyboard intermittent Freezing

My trackpad and keyboard are freezing at random intervals for random spans of time (usually for a few seconds). I havent downloaded any recent software that has cause this to my knowledge. Any help would be wonderful because even typing this is frustrating.

I just took delivery of a new MacBook a couple of days ago. When I started it up I let it restore all of my user files, applications, and everything from a Time Machine backup. That worked fine, but now Time Machine wants to perform the initial, lengthy backup on a new machine. I find that when that is running, the trackpad and keyboard both freeze and I can't do anything. Strangely, if I plug a Logitech travel mouse into one of the USB ports, that is able to drive the mouse cursor. The keyboard is still frozen until I turn the backup off though.
I'm going to plug the MacBook directly into the Time Capsule to get the backup to go faster, but I still wonder: is there a way to reduce the priority of the Time Machine process so I can use the MacBook while the backup is running?

my keyboard keeps freezing. Its so hard to type. So, how can I fix this?

Double click the Home button. Slide up with one finger on ALL your apps to close them.
Then, Press the Sleep/Wake button + Home button and hold 15 seconds or until you see the Apple logo.
This will reset your device without erasing data, apps or settings.

  • IMac keyboard/mouse Freeze, (Bluetooth AND USB!)

A few weeks ago my iMac started to freeze ramdomly, mouse/keyboard dont work, I even tried a USB mouse and keyboard with bluetooth tuned off, and the same thing happens, and when it freezes there is nothing (I tried desconecting USB keyboard/mouse, switching USB ports with no success) I can do but to unplug it from the power and plug it back in, but the weird thing is that I have LogMeIn installed, and when it freezes I am still able to use the computer thru LogMeIn, and I even WIPED my main drive, and WHILE reinstalling mountain lion the SAME thinga happened, mouse/keyboard would freeze.... I dont know what to do anymore.... please help!

Thanks for the feedback. BTW, for future reference, if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. My 27" iMac's HD went south and they replaced it onsite. Took about 1 1/2 hours. There wasn't any other down time, since I had multiple up-to-date and bootable clones on ext FWHDs and could run it until they got the parts and could come in.  It was interesting to learn how these boxes are put together.

  • ES1-311 Mousepad freezing

I have recently purchased a new ES1-311 with windows 8.1. Everything is running fine apart from the mousepad - this keeps randomly freezing for 5-30 seconds before unfreezing (although occasionally a re-boot is required). Whilst it does so the keyboard continues to work fine. I've tried removing and re-installing the drivers as well as a full restore back to the stock system but nothing seems to help. Sometimes enabling and disabling the trackper using the F7 works but only some of the time. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks

Hi there, Just wondering if a solution to this was found?  I have tried most of the things suggested here and to no avail.  The trackpad freezes up randomly all too frequently and it is a nuisance.   The problem has also been highlighted @ http://community.acer.com/t5/Notebooks-Netbooks/Acer-Aspire-ES1-311-touchpad-does-not-work/td-p/328483 as well as on the product reviews at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B00NWHUXK0/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_summary/277-8364136-3789400?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=byRankDescending Come on Acer, can you provide a solution please because this is a serious flaw in otherwise a really good value for money product. Ta

  • GS60 - Mousepad freezing/crashing and hard drive clicking issue

    Hello all!
I'm going to try to put in as much detail as possible, hopefully some kind person here will know what I can do to troubleshoot these issues
I bought an MSI GS60 2PC Ghost notebook a month or two ago and I've been noticing some strange issues.
Occasionally during use, my mousepad will freeze for around 2 seconds and then start back up. What i mean by this is that i'll be swiping my finger and then the cursor will just stop moving for 2 seconds mid-swipe. This seems to happen fairly randomly multiple times a day.
The most annoying part is that the first time it happens after a fresh restart, the mouse seems to lose precision. Meaning that after the first freeze, if i do a quick swipe and stop, the cursor will lag behind a bit and fully stop movement noticeably after I stop moving my finger. It happened while I typed this.
    >"REINSTALL YOUR MOUSEPAD DRIVER"
I did, it started happening again. Here's the thing. If I'm also playing music while using the laptop and mousepad, any music I'm playing will temporarily also slow down/ get distorted during that 2 second freeze.
Eventually, the mousepad will just crash altogether and I'll have to restart to get it to work again.
    >"ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE NOT HITING THE MACRO TO DISABLE THE MOUSEPAD"
I'm sure. The music issue leads me to think it might be something else, not the mousepad driver. Although I should note this doesn't happen if i connect a USB mouse and use that instead.
I'm also hearing a weird clicking noise every so often. It seems to come from the bottom right hand side of the laptop when facing the keyboard top-down. Like, to the right of the mousepad. Could it be the HDD? It doesn't really bother me too much but it's pretty loud and people in class will often turn around thinking i'm taking a picture of them. It just happened as I typed this as well.
I've tried recording these things but they never happen with the camera rolling.
Anyone have any ideas? I'll shower you with free Steam games if the help you provide ends up fixing the problem.
    Thanks in advance

Turn on the task manager and check if the CPU or HDD is having a high usage while the cursor freeze happens.
    Try this:
Go to Control Panel> Hardware and Sound> Power options> change plan settings(choose the one you're using)> Change advance power settings> Processor power management> set 98%, 99% of on both on battery and plugged in.
Clicking sound for HDD is normal if the read and write head is working.
You can run the HD Tune's s.m.a.r.t test and see if there is anything wrong with the HDD, if not, then I think you don't really need to worry about the sound.

  • Imac usb keyboard/mouse freezes - please help!

    i have a 700 mhz g4 flat-panel, 768 RAM, 40 GB disk, running OS 10.4.5.
the keyboard and mouse keep freezing up. sometimes one, sometimes the other. if i unplug the offending one and plug it back it, it works fine. i've tried using different USB ports, and re-setting the PRAM, but after a few minutes of use, the problem comes back.
    please help!

Thanks. I was just going to post that I had more information. Luckily, it seems to jive with what you suspect.
This crash was different. Instead of a "freeze" it panicked. In the USB driver, naturally.
It was throwing these log entries beforehand:

So I was going to swap out the mouse, anyway. If that doesn't stop it, I'll change USB ports.
Thanks so much for the response.

  • Keyboard/trackpad freeze on launch from 10.5.1 install dvd - please test

I, like legions of others on this forum and others, have had nothing but problems with the MacBook Pro keyboard/trackpad. All of these problems have disappeared since reinstalling 10.4.5 from the original dvds that came with my MacBook Pro.
A while ago, hopeful that 10.5 would solve the problems that 10.4.9 introduced, I bought the 10.5.1 dvd. After ugrading/reinstalling a number of times but always having the keyboard and trackpad problem, I tried the following experiment.
I wiped the hard disk clean (wrote "0" 's on the disk), then stuck the 10.5.1 dvd into the drive and booted. Then, before choosing the language, I waited one minute. The keyboard/trackpad completely froze. I was able to repeat this experiment a few times, and in each case, the same thing happened. I then re-installed 10.4.5, and all of my problems are gone.
I would like to know if others can test this out - even if you do not wipe your drive clean first. Just boot from the install disk, then - don't do anything - just wait a couple of minutes to see if the keyboard and trackpad freeze. I don't understand why it would be purely a hardware issue when
    1. the hardware works perfectly with 10.4.5, and
    2. many people are having the same problem, and we don't all have identical hardware.
the hardware I'd like to really see replaced are the apple care representatives. somehow, "apple care" has become an oxymoron, as far as I can see.
    thanks.

  • PLEASE REVIEW THIS LOG REPORT 4 COMP/KEYBOARD/MOUSE FREEZE..FANS CYCLE FAST

    MY COMP STATS ARE BELOW..
as of late my g5 on random occasion will freeze up, the keyboard and mouse freeze, the caps lock button will not light up, plugging in new mouses wont work, the fans speed up like **** coming to earth..none of the keyboard shortcuts work. my only option is to keep dpoing a hard shutdown by holding the power button. i dont have any new recently installed software..
    - the light near the power button that is suppose to blink a color code to advise of certain issues is not blinking at all, nor has it changed color.
    - the freezes happen at random..sometimes not for days or a week and today it happened twice in 2 hours..
    - and my apple warranty is up..
    - i have recently started using a hp photosmart C4480 printer/scanner which i did not install any software..it worked plug and play.
im not overly computer tech savy..i posted the log from after a freeze down below..
IF ANYONE IS GOOD WITH READING THE LOGS MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME OR DECIPHER WHAT MAY BE CAUSING THE FREEZES??
i see some messages that look like its a bad thing or something is outdated but i dont know what exactly its referring too..maybe some experianced user can point something out?
    - maybe a software upgrade or removal is needed?
if i did not post enough info for u to access my issue let me know what else you need to know please...system specs..software..whatever..
i cant afford to upgrade to 10.4 and the system is showing no hardware issues when i run the hardware scanning disc..
i cannot seem to find my utility disc to run those scans..any place i can download anything to do other scans,,
