Keyboard no longer works in finder

my keyboard works in any application except finder, mouse still works, just can't type anything, such as re-naming a folder.

  • The function of the F keys at the top of my keyboard no longer work as they used to. How do I restore their old function?

The function of the F keys at the top of my keyboard no longer work as they used to. The actions they do no longer correspond to the symbols that are printed on them. For example, the volume buttons no longer control volume and now change the display to full-screen instead, and the brightness buttons don't do anything at all.
This started today and I'm finding it very irritating. I checked in System Preferences and didn't find any obvious way to turn most of them back to what they used to do.
    Help?

In System Preferences > Keyboard uncheck Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.

  • Apple Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard no longer works after OSX update

After installing the latest OSX update yesterday (something about iChat encryption), Apple Bluetooth Keyboard no longer works with my iMac.
When I restarted the iMac after installation was completed, the iMac would no longer recognise my Bluetooth Apple wireless keyboard. I've tried with 2 other Apple wireless keyboards as well, but to no avail. None of them work with the iMac any longer. All 3 keyboards work with my PowerMac Quad G5 though.
The iMac "sees" the keyboards, but the pairing doesn't go through because the iMac doesn't seem to recognise the keystrokes when entering the pairing code.
I had to go out and buy myself a Microsoft wired keyboard to be able to restart the iMac (couldn't enter the login password without a keyboard).
My bluetooth mighty mouse works flawlessly though.
    Very frustrating. Can anyone help?

  • Backlit keyboard no longer working.

I just recently upgraded my 2010 macbook pro RAM. I went from 4gb to 6gb and now my backlit keyboard is no longer working. I have tried messing with the keyboard settings as well as the F5 and F6 buttons. The keyboard does not even come on in low lit conditions. Why is my backlit keyboard no longer working?

    Hi...
Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • 3rd party keyboard no longer works properly with Yosemite

Prior to the update to Yosemite my third party bluetooth keyboard paired without issue on my wizened 2007 MBP workhorse. I unfortunately spilled some liquid on the keyboard recently. A few keys no longer respond. I will be replacing the keyboard, being cheeper than replacing the entire computer. I brought out my third party bluetooth keyboard, and it initially paired fine under Yosemite. I went into the keyboard preferences to see if I could improve the key mapping with the function keys. Selected "set up bluetooth keyboard" which seemed to reset the connection. Since, the keyboard no longer worked completely. Letters, numbers, and function keys, respond, but none of the letter keys. I re-paired it multiple times to the same effect (forget - pair). The keyboard still pairs fine with my iPhone 6, with the Apple Mouse still pairs fine with the laptop. Is there any way to fix this problem? The keyboard technically is pairing!
I am using an old apple USB keyboard as plan B until the main keyboard is replaced. However, this is especially frustrating, because one of the reasons why I bought that keyboard was in case the old laptop's keyboard developed issues!

Do either of these typical troubleshooting steps make any difference?
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Command+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
"3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * click the globe or padlock to the left of the address in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
    Any difference?

  • Opened Powerbook - Now Keyboard No Longer Works :(

    Hi all,
my brother asked me to upgrade the HD in his PowerBook G4 1.25Ghz. I followed instructions on iFixit and it all went well, apart from reattaching the keyboard ribbon cable. The logic board has now become damaged because one of the two clasps on either side of the plastic bracket securing the ribbon cable from the keyboard has snapped off. The ribbon cable doesn't seem to hold securely anymore and the keyboard cannot be used. The take-apart guide was a bit unclear about this; what I have is a ribbon cable with a completely stripped and exposed end which slips into a plastic bracket on the logic board and is then wedged in by a separate plastic cross-bar which clips in to the bracket using the 2 clasps at either end. Despite the fact that one of these clasps has now snapped off the ribbon cable looks like it’s pretty firmly wedged in (although it seems an uncharacteristically poor design on Apple’s part) and I’ve made double sure with a little strip of tape. I can’t see how it could be held any other way, however clearly it’s not working as the Powerbook keyboard no longer works and I have to use a USB keyboard.
I can’t figure this connection out as it looks so makeshift compared to other cables and sockets I’ve seen on Apple logic boards. Anyone have a solution to fixing this ribbon cable in so that it’s making full electrical contact as intended?
    Thanks!

OK, thanks. A new logic board seems such an extreme solution, but it may be the only thing left to try
The thing is I can't really see what it is that isn't making contact with the ribbon cable. I know the clasp on one side is gone, but despite this the cable is just as firmly wedged in and tape applied over the top to ensure it doesn't ever work loose. I've re-done the connection 4 times now in the hope of making the keyboard work... but nothing. it's a real head-scratcher! You would think that simply inserting the ribbon cable into the slot would be sufficient to make electrical contact, at least for a while; and that the clasps are there just to make sure it doesn't become detached over time.... but it doesn't work no matter how hard it's pushed in!
I don't suppose anyone has a close-up picture of the connection? I want to see if I'm putting it in right. thanks!

Not the same symptoms, but I noticed that after a few days of running great, odd things started happening on my iMac. The first thing was that when I would boot the Mac up for the first time in the morning, it would boot into single user mode. I have the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, so I know there's no way keys are being held down.
The other symptom was that Microsoft Outlook 2011 would hang on launch. It would get stuck on the "Setting Up Identities..." phase. Rebuilding the Outlook database would help until the next time I shut the iMac down.
Also a couple of times it got to the Desktop after a boot, but not everything was working correctly and some startup items didn't load.
The iMac also kept booting into single user mode on the first boot.
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion, and I thought that fixed both problems, until the next morning. Now I just don't shut the Mac down. I can close Outlook, and it launches in a couple of seconds.
So it would appear that something is becoming corrupt when OS X is shut down. If I don't shut it down, it's fine.

  • Keyboard doesn't work in Finder

Hi all. Yesterday my keyboard stopped working in Finder. I had a look on the forums and found a fix which was to delete the com.apple.preferences.finder file, or whatever it was called. However, this fix has only worked till today! Finder again refuses to let me type or use my keyboard for navigation!
Any ideas how I can permanently fix this without having to delete the aforementioned file every time this happens?
    Thanks.

Test if trashing that file again really clears up the problem. If so, we can then focus on what is constantly corrupting that particular file (maybe some third party plugin?).
How quickly does this happen? If you can work this way, try booting into safe mode and see if that prevent the problem. If it does then try booting normally and see if it is cleared up or happening again. Report back and we can take it from there.

[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.
It also wouldn't hurt to do a bit of general maintenance if you haven't done that already:
Boot from the installer disk, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. You can verify a drive from DU on your main drive while booted but I have found this can result in incorrect reporting of errors. To repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive anyway.
Next, boot from your drive in [Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393] and repair permissions. You can repair permissions while booted from the installer disc but this uses the permissions configuration on the installer disc which may be out of date if you have run any updates on your computer. Booting your computer to Safe Mode restricts the number of things running on your computer while permissions are being run and done a bit of spring cleaning at the same time.

From BDaqua (couldn't have said it better):
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes."

  • Dead keys in keyboard no longer working

I use "us-acentos"  keymap and since 2014-09-24 upgrade the dead keys are no longer working: typing apostrophe  followed by "e" should print "é" but instead it just prints the apostrophe.
This under X both in bash and in a graphical editor such as leafpad, geany, netbeans. In a non-X session the dead keys do not work either, an apostrophe followed by "e"  will just display a space.
Would anyone have any suggestion as to why this happened and how to correct it? Thank you.

    [2014-09-24 17:03] [PACMAN] upgraded xz (5.0.6-1 -> 5.0.7-1)

    Follow-up:
    1) I could restore the keyboard in X with this command:
    $ localectl set-x11-keymap us pc104 alt-intl
    which creates /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf:
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "system-keyboard"
    MatchIsKeyboard "on"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbVariant" "intl"
    Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
    EndSection
another option that worked was to rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf.pacsave to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf, which also contained the "XkbLayout" and "XkbVariant" lines under "InputClass" (the original file had been renamed to .pacsave in February 2013). See wiki:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … on_in_Xorg
The output from localectl status now reads:
    System Locale: LANG=fr_CA.UTF-8
    VC Keymap: us-acentos
    X11 Layout: us
    X11 Model: pc105
    X11 Variant: intl
    X11 Options: terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp
So it seems that the result of an earlier upgrade was to "unset" the keyboard for X (compare with output from localectl status in original post). Why?
    2) the keyboard in console (out of X) is still not working. If I try to set it to "us-alt-intl" in /etc/vconsole.conf, it works as "us" should (no dead keys); it I use "us-acentos" some keys do not work. locale-ctl shows that "us-acentos" does exist (but not "us-alt-intl").
    Mystery.

  • Notify no longer working with find friends app!

On find friends app the notify button no longer works and myself and everyone I'm trying to set the notify button has the latest update "6.1.2". Any one else having the same problem?

I didn't realize until I went to a class to lecture in front of a couple hundred students that what worked on Friday no longer worked on Monday.  (I upgraded to iOS 5 over the weekend.)  My iPad with lecture slides was plugged in 25 feet away.  I finally recruited a student to tap the iPad screen when I needed the next slide.  A nightmare.  What is usually slick and seamless was a wreck.
Here's my deal.  My remote app works fine at home where my iPod Touch and iPad are on the same wifi network.  At school they're on different networks for some reason.  Bluetooth doesn't work anywhere.  So Apple needs to find this bug and fix it.  I can't believe whoever is responsible for this didn't test this out before they released iOS 5.  Sheesh.

Also on my Logitech EasySwitch Bluetooth Keyboard, triple tapping the home button on it no longer works to trigger Accessibility, even though that is still set up for triple tap in Settings and continues to work on the iPad itself. How can I get these functions back? Wah!

  • Certain Keys on Keyboard No Longer Work

    Hello,
As of a few minutes ago, my standard wired Mac Keyboard appears to be malfunctioning. The Tab and Caps Lock keys no longer work, and certain combinations of keys, such as alt-apple-esc, to bring up the force quit menu is no longer working either. I tried unplugging the keyboard and reconnecting it, I restarted, and I'm still having the same problem - it came out of nowhere.
Are peripherals like the keyboard and mouse covered under my Applecare warranty?
    Thanks,
    Lonny

Your keyboard and mouse should be covered, but before you give up on the keyboard, get hold of some compressed air and clean it. You can also turn the keyboard over and give it a sharp smack to see if anything is lodged under those keys.
Let us know how you make out,
    Miriam

  • Correction feature from keyboard no longer working

After installing the last iPhone software update 1.0.2, I noticed that the correction feature from the keyboard is no longer working, does not pop-up to suggest corrections or words. Even if I prefer this feature off since it let me type faster, I am worried because I don't know why this is happening, or if can be related with a problem installing the last update.
Anyone knows something about this? Thanks.

Try doing a reset (hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down until the Apple logo appears). That will mostly like fix this problem.

  • The Illuminated lights on my keyboard no longer work

I just noticed last night that my Mac Book Pro's Illuminated keyboard lights no longer work. They used to work without any problems but now they don't. I don't use this feature often, so I don't know how long the problem has been occuring. I only just noticed it last night.
I tried resetting the PRAM and the power management, to no avail. The "Illuminate keyboard in low-light settings" button is checked in system preferences.
The strange thing is, I can press the keyboard light controllers on the keyboard and the indicator of the light level appears on the screen, but the lights don't actually come on.
The ambient light settings for the display are working fine. I don't understand what's going on with the keyboard lights. It's very irritant.
My Macbook Pro is one of June 2007's models, the Santa Rosa 15", 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. It came with Tiger and I upgraded to Leopard in December. Last week I upgraded to 10.5.3. Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes, as I said in my first post, that box is toggled. It still doesn't work. I've tried turning it off and back on and it still doesn't work.
I haven't even had this computer for a year yet already it's breaking down. 3 months after I bought I had to have the LED replaced because it was defective, and now this.
Why is this professional laptop that costs as much as it does breaking down after barely a year? I never had these problems with my IBM ThinkPad laptop. I only needed to take it in for support after 4 years of solid performance.
I don't expect to see these problems in a supposedly professional computer that is barely a year old.
    Oh well.

  • I took my computer in for service just before the warranty expired now I have one question and can't get any help. The sound buttons on my keyboard no longer work

I installed the new Mavericks update on my MacBook Pro when it was released and offered free of charge. After that my computer started crashing on a regular basis, upon the realization that my warranty was due to expire at the end of the year I took my computer in to the Apple Store in Green Hills Mall about 5 days before Christmas. To anyone not familiar with Green Hills in Nashville TN the traffic is horrendous at all times let alone 5 days before Christmas. They had to send it off for service and it was shipped back to me on Christmas Eve. Through the holidays I haven't used it much. I usually just use it at work between customers and most of the time just leave it here. Friday evening I played videos with no problems, when I came back in on Monday and played a video the sound had decreased dramatically and the volume control keys on my keyboard would not work. I don't know if they were working before because I don't remember if I used them or not since Monday was the first time the volume was so low. Now my warranty is expired and I am very poor ( The I have a job, a roof over my head and food to eat but a negative balance in checking account and bills still to pay kind of poor) so I am hoping that someone out there knows what's causing this and how to fix it.

Mavericks has had a lot of compatability issues and are slowly being fixed.  This is why I haven't upgraded yet.
Either downgrade back to Mountain Lion or just wait for a software fix.
