Keyboard not working at boot and CD won't boot
Hello everyone,
I think I have a very particular issue that hasn't happened to many people since I could not find any topics talking about this already. Before I begin, let me excuse myself for my bad english writing.. it ain't my primary language.
Ok so I was already running Mac OS X 10.5 and decided to try bootcamp so I could use Autocad in Windows XP. What I did is start the bootcamp assistant and install Windows XP. After the installation my computer was booting with that "Disk error" message.
Ok no worries, I had all my files backed up on my external hard drive but for some very weird reason, my original Mac OS X Leopard DVD would not boot anymore and it was still saying "Disk error". I decided to try holding "C" at startup to boot from the DVD but it would not work. I can hear the DVD working but it's still not booting from it.
I thought my DVD was defect so I try booting up from my Windows CD and when it asked me to "press any key to boot from CD" i realized that my keyboard was not working during startup. Any startup key like "C", ALT, Command or any other keys were not working. Even the light on the capslock key would not work when i pressed the key.
I had an old Knoppix Live CD which is a Linux and that booted fine. When that boots it asks me to press a key to boot or to wait 2 minutes and it will boot on it's own. I couldn't press a key to boot so I waited 2 minutes and my keyboard started working when the Linux OS was booted. I managed to erase the partition table of my harddrive to start from scratch but my Mac OS DVD would not boot either way and my keyboard is still not working at boot (in the gray screen where you can actually use startup shortcuts normally).
I also tried to boot with my old Mac OS 10.4 DVD and I had the same results.
Before you ask, yes I tried another USB keyboard, I also tried all 3 USB ports. The only thing that works at boot is when I hold the mouse button to eject my CD/DVD. But all my keyboard shortcuts doesn't work and I can boot from any installation CD (windows, linux) but not Mac OS 10.4 or 10.5.
Okay so I managed to fix this problem with another apple keyboard, the mac os installation would still not boot but at least I was able to press N to boot from network and start a Mac OS from the network. From there I could insert the Mac OS installation disc and start the installation from there and now everything works fine. Thanks to everyone for your help.

L420 Several number keys on keyboard not working (except 5 and 6)
Hi there,
I am having some troubles with the keyboard of my L420. All the numbers (except 5 and 6) and F9 to F12, Insert and Delete are not working.
I found several threads with people describing the same problem (all numbers except 5 and 6 not working) but no solutions yet.
I have tried a System Restore, uninstall the keyboard, and an external keyboard. The numbers do not work neither when running Ubuntu nor in BIOS.
The problem first occured when I woke my laptop from Sleep and tried to enter my password. After using the onscreen keyboard, I was able to login and the numbers worked again. Then after restarting, the numbers stopped working even in Windows running.
I would appreciate any help on this problem. Can someone exclude that it is a hardware problem because 5 and 6 are working? I did not spill anyng on or damage the keyboard.

Use the Keyboard Viewer to test whether the keyboard keys are responding correctly when they are pressed.
1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choose Language & Text from the View menu (or International from the View menu in Mac OS X v10.5 or earlier).
2. Select Input Sources.
3. Select the Keyboard & Character Viewer checkbox.
4. Enable the input source for the keyboard layout you are testing by selecting the checkbox next to it.
5. Make sure that "Show Input menu in menu bar" is enabled.
6. Choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu in the menu bar, as shown.
7. The Keyboard Viewer shows the keyboard layout.
8. Type the key on the keyboard that doesn’t respond and observe whether the corresponding key highlights on the Keyboard Viewer. If it does, that particular key is functioning correctly. In the sample shown above the shift and command keys are being pressed.
9. If the mouse keys feature in the Universal Access System Preferences pane is enabled, many of the keyboard keys may not respond as expected.
10. Try starting up into single user mode to determine whether a software issue is causing the issue. -
My MacBook Pro keyboard not working correctly after Win7 bootcamp installation.
Installation went well but when I boot either with OSx or Win it always keeps Windows keyboard.
How can I have Mac keyboard in OS boot and Win keyboard in Win boot?Hi - I have the exact same model as your MacBook and had a few questions as mine is acting up. I upgraded the ram to 8gb (2x 4GB ram) and ever since then my computer has not been running as smoothly and the start up time is horrendous. Have you encountered this problem? And if so how did you fix? What would you advise me do?
I was thinking of reverting back to the original factory 4GB then rebooting the entire computer. Any suggestions?

You're right, problem wasn't actually solved. In fact, yesterday I upgraded the whole system again and the same problem showed up, but I got it fixed.
Same scenario: after a boot (shorter than usual), what I had was a tty, but I noticed something that I hadn't noticed the last time: the prompt said "Arch Linux 3.11.[?]".
The kernel version was supposed to be 3.12.[?] so I started investigating and after several attempts, this is how I got the system working again:
1. Chrooted into the system
2. Wiped /boot
3. Re-installed grub
4. Re-installed linux kernel
5. Re-created grub.cfg
6. ???
7. Profit
I'm pretty sure that what originated the problem wasn't a "kernel issue" as I pointed out in my previous post, but it was an incorrect installation of grub: in fact, the grub prompt never showed up before yesterday, the system used to boot straight, ignoring the 5 seconds timeout. -
Keyboard Not Working and Question Mark Folder on Startup
I've got a question for a Mac Genius: What is the cause of my keyboard not working and a grayscreen coming up on startup? I'll give you a little background. I have a 1.83Ghz Macbook that is two years old now...almost exactly. I came back from work yesterday and it was in a semi-frozen state. Two apps were frozen but the finder was still alive. Within 10 seconds of trying to navigate through the Finder, it froze too. I went ahead and tried to restart it, but nothing happened. I held down the power button and it shut off. When I tried to start it back up a gray screen comes up. It makes the chiming sound but goes no where. After about half a minute the folder with the question mark will appear. The first few times I tried it, it seemed like the optical drive was trying really hard to work, but it doesn't try so hard anymore. None of the keys work and the Caps Lock and Num Lock don't light, so I can't use any of the keyboard commands to work my way around (resetting PRAM/using startup disks). The CD is stuck in it because I can't force eject it. I believe the trackpad is also not working, but I couldn't be sure.
Previously I had noticed that when I came back from work I would find Mozilla Firefox using tons of the CPU when it wasn't really doing anything. This heated up the computer and made the fans spin at crazy speeds(6000RPM). I will try the Hard drive in another computer tonight probably because I'm pretty sure that's not the problem, but I would like to be sure.
Any ideas would be helpful! I'm just about to tear it open and see if anything has been physically fried.I went ahead and tried to eject the CD with an external mouse but it didn't work. What I ended up doing is swapping my hard drive into my friend's computer and discovered that that was the only problem. It appears that my HDD was totally fried because after I booted off of the start-up cd, the HDD was nowhere to be found within disk utility. My computer starts up fine and the keyboard works fine when I have someone else's HDD in mine. I'm really surprised that the Macbook needs a good HDD to operate it's trackpad and keyboard. Thank you for your help! Although now I have a new question; is there any way to salvage the data trapped on my old HDD? Cheers!

Why keyboard and mouse right click not working in Solaris and Linux?

I have two problems:
1) I am working on AWT/Swing application and its working fine in window enviornment,but while running on solaris and linux mouse right-click option window not poping up.
2) Ctrl+c,Ctrl+v,Home and End keyboard key are not working in solaris and linux OS for same application.
Pls provide me some solution for these problem.

Thanks for reply. I found some solution for the above problem.
For mouse right click there was problem in my source code.I have not implemented the mousePressed() method
In case of keyboard Home, End and arrow key working fine after exporting AWTUSE_TYPE4_PATCH=false; in solaris and linux
But still Ctrl-c and Ctrl-v not working.
I am using JDK1.5.0_07+Eclipse IDE 3.1

To boot my MacPro now, I have to go thru the reset Pram. Doesn't work each time. I usually don't turn my machine off. Booting in Safe mode does not work...when it doesn't boot I get only a gray screen, no icons in the screen like bad disk etc. I have replaced the battery. My professor son tells me to setup a new drive internally and install a new system and see if the new OS works. I have 3 internal drives with all data on bays 3 and 4... Bay 1 is the system drive with apps only. I'm 70 miles from the closest Apple store and thought I would ask tonight before driving in.
Replacing the PRAM ("backup") battery on the machine may be needed. Here's how, go to page 50 of the user manual:

Installed Windows 8 on a late 2011 MacBook Air and was working fine now keyboard not working so cannot enter password? Caplocks key works but I am locked out on my own PC and cannot seem to get it to recognize built in keyboard,bluetooth,generic USB one.
Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps. -
G4 just replaced power supply , it powers up , but the screen is not on and the mouse and keyboard aren't on either. A few times the computer came on with screen working but then it froze up, can't do any type of reset cause of keyboard not working. Help! Pressed pmu button already, nothing ,.. Ppc g4 Mac

Memtest X or Rember to test the RAM.
Reseat is also good.
The iPhone 4 doesn't like USB 1.1 much.
after the update the computer was working well, except for this freeze when ever I connect iPhone.
I'd try USB 2.0 PCI. That's how I connect my iPhone 4s, and have connected all iPhones and iPods, to my G4.
Never an issue.
Can't say the same for USB 1.1.......

USB Keyboard not working after running Monolingual
Okay, I'm not a Mac person and should have known that I was going to mess up my mother's iMac, but here it is -
In an attempt to improve the mac's performance I performed all of the actions described in the following article: 11 Ways to Optimize your Mac's Performance ( http://lowendmac.com/eubanks/07/0312.html ). Basically, I cleaned up files and 'other' system preferences. Things seemed to be fine and the computer did run much better. However, after running Monolingual and deleting what I understood to be 'unnecessary' PowerPC files the standard USB keyboard is no longer working.
I've tried to search for various remedies, but have come to a dead end. So I'm left with reinstalling the Snow Leopard OS (I think it is 10.6.8?) BUT I can't because it is asking to input the account password (which I know) to make the change and I can't figure how to do that when the keyboard not working.
Any help would be great!
*feeling like a bone head*How are you trying to reinstall Snow Leopard? If you're booting from the Snow Leopard or iMac Install DVD that came with the system then that should eliminate any of the issues you may or may not have caused when you deleted did the clean up work on your mom's system.
I suggest trying the following:
0) Verify that the caps lock key is off. It can make inputting passwords difficult if you don't realize it is ON.
1) Reset the PRAM by restarting the system then quickly press the command-option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears. Wait until you hear the computer restarts two times as indicated by the startup chime. For more info refer to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379.
2) If the issue persists after the PRAM reset then boot from the Snow Leopard or iMac Install DVD, whichever you have. Once you see the menu asking you to choose a language try using the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the language choice selection. If the arrow keys are working at this point it indicates your keyboard is at least partially functional. Go ahead and select the language then proceed to step 3.
3) Once the next screen appears move the cursor up to the menu bar area and pull down the Utilities menu. Select the 'Terminal' application. Once the Terminal application launches try typing the various keys on the keyboard and check to see if the correct characters are displayed. Please let us know if you detect any errors. If there are no errors then you should be able to quit the Terminal application and proceed with reintstalling the OS. -

I am having the exact same problem with the DoS beep that now sounds like screetching upon boot up. It is so bad that I can no longer turn off the computer, or it usually doesnt boot up for hours. I will give the USB keyboard trick a try tho.
The worst of it is that I leave the computer on standby at night to avoid the boot issue, and the computer starts itself up at night, like 2am and starts beeping nonstop until I manually power it down with the power button. Ive been having these problems for 2 years, since I first purchased the computer, and I just recently found out that the battery has failed, even though the computer is ALWAYS plugged in, and has been used on battery mode for all of 10 hours max. I believe this boot problem is a battery related issue. This battery is not on the HP recall list (not surprisingly).
I called HP customer support, and even contacted a case manager. They pretty much dont want to hear about the problem because I am out of warrantee x1 year. They pretty much dismiss it until I pay 330$ for repairs. They laugh at the anguish this night-time awakening is causing. Very disrespectful for HP customer service. Not sure if I will buy an HP again.
Anyways, let's work on this issue together. Can anybody send me a link to that manual? I would like to try resetting the RAM. This computer is in brand new condition, and the keyboard, battery and boot are all malfunctioning for no reason at all.

Does the keyboard work fine inside the BIOS?
Also try booting from LiveCD of Ubuntu, if issue remains then the keyboard is faulty.

PAD Mini Locked after iOS upgrade, tried reset on iPAD did not work, plugged in and device not appearing in iTUNEs for reset/restore. Just get an Apple Logo then a flashing blue screen as if it is caught booting up. This has happened twice before and iTunes restore fixed it. But this time device not appearing in iTunes.
Running iTunes for PC. But as stated restore has worked before! Any help greatly appreciated!!Place the device in DFU mode and let iTunes restore the device to factory condition.

I have a 22" iMac desktop running OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command P R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? I just did a software update yesterday and have about 20GB left on my Hard drive. The last thing I did was try to install some plugin's for Pro Tools 8, but it wouldnt let me install so I restarted and now I'm screwed. Please Help!

After I updated, everything seemed ok and then all of the sudden I rebooted and only the f1 – f12 row would work. I resorted to resorted to unplugging and removing the battery and it would work for a short amount of time. This has been reported on other laptops as well, see here.
