Keyboard or terminal commands to change display settings?

I have a circa 2007 Macbook Pro with a nearly dead display.  The top two thirds of it is dead.  I think it's running Snow Leopard.  When I attach a RGB external display it shows the background and I can drag windows to it, but I cannot seem to move the System Preferences window to a place where I can access the Dislays control panel.  Does anyone know of a way to change the display settings so that the main desktop is mirrored on both displays or how I can grab the System Prefs window and drag it to the other display?

Try the keyboard combo: CMD + F1 (or OPT +CMD + F1) to toggle mirroring.

  • Permanent Crash related to changing display settings while FCP is open.

Recently, the display settings (arrangement) on my two monitors started changing by itself while I was working in FCP 6.5. I'm using ancient monitors (Viewsonic MB90 and Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 920. I just don't have the money to upgrade right now). Tis was annoying but I dealt with the problem by creating two different windows layouts. Then things got worse (the only thing I had done was install 8 gigs of additional memory on top of the original 2). FCP started crashing and now I can't even open the application. It doesn't react.
Apple recently posted a not very informative acknowledgement of the problem with changing display settings while FCP is open, but it doesn't suggest solutions to my problem. It would be helpful to know a) what resolution and refresh rates are best for these old monitors and b)how to open FCP again. Your help is greatly appreciated.

    THIS IS IT!
Disabling the nVidia deep colors for 3d applications solved the uber-annoying "flicker-screen-settings-and-disrupt/crash-other-programs" issue. I specifically only disabled deep colors for Premiere, not for all 3d applications I use, because none of them have caused the same problem as Premiere.
This display-screen setting issue probably occurred because I use a Dell u3011 monitor which displays Adobe RGB color gamut, not just sRGB.
However, now this brings up another question with disabling deep colors (effectively disabling the Adobe RGB use of the Dell monitor):
QUESTION: If I have CG-rendered frames that seem to be created in sRGB and Adobe RGB (in two different programs), what color space should I be mixing/editing them in?
I'm somewhat of a novice with the color spectrum/gamut issue. From what I understand, if I edit both CG images in sRGB, I'll be losing color data from the Adobe RGB-created CG image. If I edit both CG images in Adobe RGB, will I create minor banding effects on the sRGB image because it doesn't have the color range that I'm editing in? Perhaps my question is more relevant to AfterEffects compositing of the images rather than simply/only editing them in Premiere.
The end result is something like an architectural film/ flythrough.

  • I've used a terminal command to change default send keyboard shortcut and now it doesn't work at all!

My friend provided me with a Terminal command allow me to use Cmd+Enter to send an email (muscle memory from Outlook, hard to forget!)
    Command was:
    defaults write com.apple.mail NSUserKeyEquivalents -dict-add "Send" "@\\U21a9"
Did that, and it didn't add the Cmd+Enter instruction but removed the Cmd+Shift+D instruction, so I had NO keyboard shortcut. Then Cmd+Enter started working. For a while. Now I'm back to getting the irritating error bleep sound, and having no functional keyboard shortcut for sending mail.
    Does anybody have any advice?

    Try
    defaults delete com.apple.mail NSUserKeyEquivalents
    Then, relaunch Mail.

  • Need terminal command for setting display colors ASAP!!!!!

    Hello everyone,
I was being dumb and figured, oh what will this do?
I know, I know one of those button pushers...anyway I set the Display colors to 256 on my Xserve, which has no video card in it, and now all I see in Chicken of the VNC is a black screen. Im sure there is a terminal command out there where
I can ssh into the Xserve, and change the colors back, but I can't find it...could someone post it up here or point me in the right direction please?
    Thanx in advance!!!!!!!

didn't even think of that...seems to be the most obvious things, seem to be the first to be overlooked.
    Will let you know.

  • Monitor says VIDEO MODE NOT SUPPORTED after changing display settings

HELP! I am about to have a nervous breakdown with my mac mini! I hooked up the mac to my Philips LCD via DVI. No problem at all. But because the screen is only 15" I wanted to play around with the display settings a bit. So I changed the resolution from it's original 1204x768 to the one higher (not sure of numbers) and to my HORROR, I now can't get any picture at all - it says "VIDEO MODE NOT SUPPORTED". I have tried everything I can think of. I have rest the P-RAM, I have unplugged all cables, plugged the back in again, I bought the mac into work and hooked it up to my monitor and changed the resolution back to 1024x768 which is what it was on originally and that STILL didn't work. I can see the Apple logo and then it goes black and comes up with the error message. HELP! What am I doing wrong - I can't believe one click of a mouse button has rendered my display useless!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try booting the mini without the display connected, and then, once the system is running, connect the display. This will often force the system to default to a low resolution, and then correctly detect the display when it is connected.
If that doesn't help, with the display connected, boot into safe mode (hold the shift key down when starting up) and once the system is running, change the resolution to 1024x768, and ensure the correct refresh rate is selected. Rebooting normally ought then to give you a good display.
If all else fails, boot into safe mode with the display connected, and then in the Finder's file menu, use the 'find' option to search for 'windowserver' (no quotes). You should get 2 or 3 results, including one with a string of alphanumeric characters. Move all of them to the trash and restart normally.

  • Change display settings to show mac on tv

I bought the cables in order for me to hook my macbook pro up to my plasma tv through and hdmi cord and converter.  The first few times I hooked it up I was able to drag the screen over to the tv and it worked perfect, now it is not working and I'm not sure why.  I have tried adjusting the display settings to see if that was the case, but it doesn't make a difference. If anyone has any suggestions it'd be appreciated!

It's not there. In Mountain Lion, the Displays options have changed somewhat:
It only shows the external display option when a display is detected.

  • Need to change Display settings, either resolution or color

    HI
Due to a faulty graphics driver I need to be able to change my display settings dynamically.
I know that I should use DLL calls to user32.dll, and I know that I should use the EnumDisplaySetting and ChangeDisplaySettings. But No matter what I try my LV 6.02 crashes.
I can not use G-Tool as I'm not allowed to buy it. and the shareware version dosn't include this functionality.
I have found the following links to be helpfull (but not enough):
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/gdi/devcons_84oj.asp
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/gdi/devcons_7gz7.asp
Can anyone please give me a hint. I suspect this is due to a bad choice
    of input/output datatypes.
Attached is the code I have so far (it does not work)

I took a crack at making the code work from LabVIEW and failed. The devmode struct is way too complicated! I believe you would be best off writing code in VB or C that can change the resolutions then call that code from LabVIEW. You might even find example code to do this on the web.

  • Thinkvantage Productivity Center - Changing Display Settings

I have a T61 and everytime I attempt to change the display settings the window opens and says the settings were captured then closes.  This happens so fast I cannot click on the setting I want.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Your friend is correct.
"Choose Presentation or Display Screen" (also known as "Choose Display Scheme menu") is supposed to appear.
I don't konw why it does not work in your case, however.

  • MBP 15" retina screen is fuzzy, changing display settings does not improve, help!

My 2013 late model MBP 15" retina screen is not displaying sharply, even with I select "best resolution for Retina display."   Or when I change the settings to "scaled" and select "more space"....the text and fonts get smaller but still not "sharp". (my screen looks like an old MBP screen from 5 years ago).
How can I fix this and make it a true Retina sharpness on my screen?

    Hello BocaJulz,
You may need to enable “Use LCD font smoothing when available,” in System Preferences -> General.

  • How can I change the "Ask to join new networks" option using a terminal command?

We are currently switching to a new wireless network throughout our school district and I have pushed commands to connect to the new and remove the old. However, any Macs that have "Ask to join new networks" enabled are jumping over to our unsecure guest network, even if that network has been removed from the list of Preferred Networks. So far the fix has been to remove the guest network from the list of Preferred Networks and then disable Ask to join. The only issue I'm running into now is I have been unable to find a terminal command to change this setting. Once I have the command I can write a script and send that out to all of the Macs.
So is there a way to disable "Ask to join new networks" using command line?

  • [Bug?] Windows display settings causes boolean text to overshoot

I built a program and transferred it to a coworker to test. When he opened it, there were several visual glitches including boolean button text and multiple y axis plot issues. After several hours of troubleshooting, I realized it was because I had my graphics settings on my desktop slightly different.
If you right click (Windows 7) on desktop -> personalize -> display, you will see an option to "Make it easier to read what's on your screen".  Default in Win 7 is 125%.  This sets LabVIEW application font to 20 instead of 15 (like 100% and 150%) do.  As a result, it changes the look of your application.
Has this been observed before, and is there a fix?  note:  It also causes visual glitches on within LabVIEW development UI itself. If you look at the "Med (125%)" attached png, you will see that the bottom of Application Font" has been chopped off.

    Hi Bowen,
I can't open your pics, all I get is an error 400…
Your problem is a common one. Changing display settings in Windows has an impact on LabVIEW front panels due to changing font sizes. You have to live with it or you have to account for when designing your front panel!

  • Unable to save display settings and Multiple Monitors

Have Windows 7 RTM installed on my laptop and was working great with extending to my monitor. I took my laptop home and hooked it up to my tv and it was fine. Now when I bring it back to work I cannot get the monitor to work. Only the display on the laptop is working. Windows can detect the monitor, but I try to enable the monitor and when I select Apply I get an error message "Unable to save display settings". I am a local administrator on the laptop. How can I extend to my monitor!
    Thanks

    Hi,
Error message " Unable to save display settings" mainly indicates that you try to extend or duplicate the desktop to the two external monitors in addition to the laptop screen. Generally, laptop supports only two displays at one time due to hardware limitation. I
suspect that the issue occurs because the laptop remembers both configuration for your extended monitor and TV. To extend your monitor, you need to clear the multiple configuration for your laptop and then extend your display by changing your display
settings. To do this, please take the following steps:
    Step 1. Delete registry key.
    ==================
    1)Press Win + R to open a run box.
2)In the Run box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    3)Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MobilePC\TMM
4)Right-click the subkey that you located in step 2. Then, click Delete.
5)When you are prompted to confirm the delete operation, click Yes.
6)On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.
7)Log off the computer. Then, log on to the computer.
Step 2. Extend your display by changing display settings.
    ====================================
1)Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.
2)Click the drop-down list next to Multiple displays, click Extend these displays, and then click OK.

This registry key does not exist in my Laptop and it still won't work.  I have an Asus N53S
which has both Intel HD Graphics 3000 and an NVidia GeForce GT 540M.  It appears that the limitation is actually there is no D-Sub / HDMI  / Internal Monitor option like there is in Windows Display.
