Keyboard pointing - formulas

Question

I'm used to Excel's ability to point at cells using the keyboard in creating formulas. With Numbers, it seems that I'm tied down to using a mouse. For example, why can't I press "=" and arrow up to cell b1 and press + and arrow over to cell C1 to add those two together. As it stands, I have to go to the extra step of pointing with mouse. Is this the way it is, or am I missing something? Thanks,
