Keyboard port

all of a sudden my keyboard will not function with the computer. This happens every so often, sometimes I can reboot and it will work, other times it will not work (lights not on). I have switched keyboards and tried to plug it in as a USB but to no avail. I do not think it is the keyboard itself since I have switched keyboards and tried others. I have been told it is a port problem. does that mean that the port no longer works? can i get around the problem with the USB? But the keyboard does not seem to want to be recognized with the USB. I have a k7t266 pro ms-6380 mainboard. Any help on solving this so I don't have to get another mainboard would be appreciated.

I have a normal PS/2 keyboard and I was trying to get around the keyboard port problem by plugging it into one of the usb ports, however it will not be recognized. When I was able to get the keyboard to function on one of those good times, i did activate the USB legacy in the BIOS and that still did not work.
Any other suggestions?

  • Thumb drive draws too much power on keyboard port

My keyboard supported usb thumb drives in the past.  Suddenly it is giving not enought power errors if I insert thumb drives, iPhone or iPod into either of the ports on the keyboard.  These devices work just fine if plugged into the computer.
Has anyone had this problem or solved it?

I remember when I bought the Camera Connection Kit for my iPad2, there were several undocumented functions that you could do with it besides just transfer image files from a digital camera.  I think you could hook up a wired keyboard to the iPad (and use it), and attach USB sticks, and they worked.  But, then came an iPad update, and all that extra stuff miraculously stopped working, to be replaced with the "insufficent power" error message.
I finally found a blog posting that said they had changed a power consumption number in a single line of code and this stopped all the extra things from working.  Something like changing a number from 50 down to 20 somethings.
I seem to recall that their explanation for dumbing down the undocumented functionality was that these extra devices would decrease the battery life of the iPad.  Hmmm... I come from the PC environment where we say, "Well, let me make that decision and not you!"

  • How to read input from handheld scanner on a keyboard port

    Hi everybody,
i have an application that should read input from a scanner.
If i use a jTextField to input scanned data it works fine.
the problem is that i don't want to use any text component to input data into it.
And if i set the jtextField not visible then the focus sustem doesnt work.
I tried to read a buffered input stream from System.in but it doesnt work.
If the scanner was installed on a serial port i could use javax.comm to monitor it.
But unfortunately i must use the keyboard wedge thing...
    Do you have any ideas?
    Thank you in advance

  • Since downloading latest OS (07?) on my 4G-S can't use regular charger.  Phone blinks and bleats but does not charge.  Can charge in car and from  computer keyboard port.  Much slower.

Since downloading os 7.1 to my Iphone 4G-S I have been unable to charge it on the regular charger.  I can use my USB port on my keyboard and my car charger but when I hook up to my regular charger the phone blinks on and off and bleets little beeps and does not charge.  Ipowered off and on again with no success.

No such model exists, therefore there cannot possibly be an issue with it.
If it works with other chargers, that would indicate a problem with the charger.

  • Using a PS/2 keyboard on a Sparc workstation through the serial port

We have recently migrated an application that used to run on a PC, to now run on a Sparc Workstation. This is a SunBlade 1500, running Solaris 8. The application is running in a dedicated console which has a fitted keyboard and trackerball that have PS/2 connectors and cannot be changed.
We need a way of connecting the PS/2 keyboards to the serial ports of the Sparc workstation. We already have a piece of software that will read ascii values from the serial port so we definately want to go through the serial ports.
Can someone please suggest what converters will be required to get the output of the keyboard and trackerball as ascii input to the serial port.

Actually, that's not a bit perverse, at all.
Jonathan's suggestion is a standard method of connecting to a server.
(null cable between the computer serial ports)
... see the Solaris man pages.
    man tip
TeraTerm and Hyperterminal are customarily used on a PC running some dialect of Windows.
The 'tip' command is all that's necessary between Solaris systems.
PS/2 is not a serial connection, but is a keyboard/mouse interface 'invented' by IBM when they offered their XT-class PS/2 line of desktop systems, back in the 1980's.
I found this next link by using Google:
    http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/computer/ps2/
The smaller DIN ports were more compact than the AT-class keyboard ports and the mouse moved from a serial port to a dedicated mouse port.
Serial communication devices are not keyboards, per se,
and keyboards are not serial communication devices.
You need other hardware in between to translate what the human being sends, and another computer is a common method to accomplish that translation.
    Having said all that ...
Since you cannot change the dedicated console hardware,
I suggest you go to the manufacturer of that console equipment
and have them suggest some sort of serial-to-serial interface lash-up.

  • A barcode scanner that was connected directly to the Mac's USB port stopped working as the "USB had too much power drawn", even though it has worked for over a year in that port.  WHen we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why?

A barcode scanner that was connected directly to the Mac's USB port stopped working as the "USB had too much power drawn", even though it has worked for over a year in that port.  When we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why?  Obviously the device is operational.  Could the USB port have burned out from having too much power drawn?  If so, is it reparable?

It can't draw "too much" power, it can only draw as much as the USB port is able to provide and no more. IIRC, the keyboard port has a lower power output than the iMac's port.
That being said, yea, it's possible that the port has failed and it can be replaced or if another port works you can use that one. Although if it is still under warranty or covered by Apple Care, then I would take it to an Apple Store or service provider to get the port repaired.

  • USB port at back of iMac stopped working except keyboard. Why?

My USB ports on back of iMac stopped working, I can't seem to get any power from them. Only keyboard port works..
My externals don't work neither and I got all my hard work on them. I think I've lost info?

I have no idea what happened. However, I believe that you've got to take it back to the service provider and work with them. Call them and tell them what happened and see what kind of a response you get. You might want to try to get in touch with Apple Customer Service and see if they can help you out with the service provider.
As for "compensation", that is probably a legal matter unless you have some kind of insurance that covers you for business losses. You might try to stress to the service provider that they should do whatever service is now needed to get the machine working again at no additional charge.

  • After my last OSX update: usb ports not working on my apple numeric keyboard

I'm curious if anyone else has lost usb connectivity on a Apple numeric keyboard after the last OS X update. I get the error msg "USB device needs power, connect usb disk (jump drive) to power or a usb port on this Mac". I am using OS X 10.9.1 (13B42) and the last update I took was iMovie 10.0.2 on Jan 25, 2014 on an 27' iMac (late 2012) i7 3.4 GHz, 3TB fusion, 32Gb RAM, GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB video. All four usb ports are be used and are active on the back of the iMac. All I need is the occasional acess to a couple of jump drives via the keyboard ports. I have just ordered a 3.0 powered usb hub (Satechi) This will soon be a non-issue, but I know it used to work and I'm thinking that the OS X update might has done something to my keyboard ports. Anything?

The keyboard ports are usually slower transfer rate than other ports, so would likely be unsuited for use with flash or USB storage. There is usually an upper limit to the system load of all the ports together, perhaps that load is near the maximum already, too.
Hopefully the powered USB hub will resolve the issue.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Recommendation: USB media compat with Keyboard USB port

    IMac G5 20" LCD, 1GB RAM.
I need recommendations on USB memory sticks/flash drives that work connected to the USB (1.1) port on the (stock) white Apple keyboard that came with the computer.
I've done a few searches on the web, but cannot find sources that say "this works, no driver required". So I am looking for real-life people who "know" a model/brand has worked.
This is for a classroom/lab environment, so "no driver required" is a necessity.
Thanks for any/all replies to this thread.
Please send me an email as well (as I might not check this thread for a day or two).

    Hi John,
Just thought I'd add that I have a SanDisk Cruzer Mini 256MB that works fine when plugged directly into the computer or a powered hub, but I also get a low power message if I try to plug it into the usb port keyboard ("The USB device cannot operate because it needs more power than is available.").
In response to your comment "a)", this isn't entirely correct. USB 2.0 can (and was designed to) work on 1.1 ports, though the transfer speed will be reduced. Curiously, I have an iPod Shuffle (which is USB 2.0) that connects with no problems to my keyboard (USB 1.1) and there is no "low power" alert. The transfer time is noticeably slower than if it's plugged directly into the computer or hub (both USB 2.0 on my computer), but it's more convenient and often fast enough for transferring small files.
If you've discovered anything with new USB flash drives I'd be interested in hearing about it. I'm considering a new one but I would like one that I can plug it into my keyboard port.
    Cheers,
    Matt

  • Want Mac mini and G4 to share Display and USB keyboard and mouse

I bought a KVM switch at a local electronics store. I got the only one that claimed Mac compatibility (PPA Int'l). I can't plug the switch into the G4 Cube. No such ports. With the adapter that accompanied my brand new Mac Mini, I can plug the KVM monitor port into the mini's monitor port, BUT that port is currently being used by the Apple DVI-to-ADC adapter I bought so I can connect my Cinema Display to the Mac mini.
The KVM switch wants 3 ports on each computer: a VGA (monitor) port, the keyboard port, and the mouse port; but the keyboard/mouse connectors are not USB.
As things stand--without the switch--I can shut down whatever computer I'm working on (mini or Cube), unplug the display from one, connect it to the other, power up and everything's fine. I suppose the only advantage with the KVM switch is being able to power off, switch, then power on without having to move the display plug.
My QUESTION is, does anybody manufacture a KVM switch I can use between two Macintosh computers to share use of my USB keyboard powered from a USB port on the display, and my USB mouse powered from a USB port on the keyboard?
Or is the answer NOT to go for the convenience of a KVM switch?
Does it matter that the mini OS is Leopard, and the Cube OS is Tiger?
I am heartily impressed with the mini. Setup was over in 5 minutes, and I must say it's fast. Appreciate any help from the experts. --Spot

I had the same problem, and finally came up with two other alternative solutions.
First, if you have a recent LCD monitor, it is fairly simple and cheap. The Mini has a digital connection for the monitor. My G4 400 MHz has both digital and analog connections. I have a Samsung 19 inch widescreen monitor that has both a digital and an analog input. I connected the G4 to the monitor using the analog input with my old cable, and connected the Mini using the digital input. The Samsung has a switch that will use either the digital or analog input - very easy.
Now the keyboard and mouse. I got a 6 foot USB cable with the A plug on one end and B plug on the other, plugged the A plug end into the G4, and ran the cable with the B plug up near the Mini. It helps to keep it close. You already have the keyboard/mouse plugged into the Mini. You simply unplug the keyboard cable from the Mini, and plug it into the B plug from the G4. Switch the monitor from digital to analog, and you have the G4 (remember to start it up). Once you have run the cables, it takes about 10 seconds to make the switch.
Second, and I use both ways, is to get an inexpensive wired router. I bought a Belkin 4 port router (about $30, I think), got a couple Cat 5 cables, hooked both the Mini and G4 up to the router, along with my internet connection, and have both computers available on one monitor with no physical switching involved. You will need to go to System Preferences/Sharing and turn on Personal File Sharing (there may be another change, but I can't remember it right now).
When all is hooked up, you go to GO in the Finder Menu Bar (make sure the G4 is booted before doing this) click on either NETWORK or CONNECT TO SERVER, find your G4 and connect. It may be confusing the first few times, but it works great because you have access to both computers at once, along with your internet connection - the best of both worlds!
I did this in January of this year, so please forgive me if I have forgotten a step somewhere. Ask me and I'll be glad to try to walk you through it. The first solution is the simplest to do, and the second in the most versatile. It's your choice.
Hope this helps. Just don't be intimidated by it - if I can figure it out, we can get you connected. Good luck!

  • Not enough USB ports!

I have 3 USB ports on my G5 and 4 things that need to be powered directly off them (the keyboard; a DigiDesign M-Box; a Mackie Baby HUI; and a 4-port hub). How can I get this to work all at once? I’d rather not have to un-plug the 4-port hub every time I want to use the Mackie mixing board.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!

    <RANT>
I have been a strong advocate for more rear panel ports (fat lot of good it's done!) for years. USB expansion on Macs is terrible. I have a box full of PCI USB cards from Sonnet, Adaptec, Belkin, IO Gear, NEC, you name it. Red ones, yellow ones purple ones, big ones, small ones, 2 port cards, four port cards, five port cards....not one "works without issues". Some will allow the computer to sleep as long as nothing is connected to them. With others, the computer will not even boot. I could buy another Mac with what I've spent on these 'effing things. And don't give me that bull about the display and keyboard ports either. The display ports can be just as problematic as the expansion cards and the keyboard ports while convenient for things like a mouse or PowerMate, are low power and cannot support things like media card readers. The front port is very handy for temporary connections but who wants a cable sticking out of the front of their computer all the time?
All of this could be avoided by simply providing 4-6 rear panel ports like the other computers have. For what Apple charges for their machines, it would not, I am sure" break the bank".

  • Port replicators and the MacBook

I want to have a monitor and a keyborad that I can hook up to when I get to my office. Is there no port replicators like I had for my Dell laptop when I was a PCer?
I have found that the MB needs an adaptor from the DVI Mini to the DVI to use another monitor...but is there a keyboard port that I can just plug a new KB in? Does it have to be Mac?
Sorry but I have not recieved the MB in the mail and I am already full of questions.
    Thanks
    MB   Windows XP
    MBP   Windows XP

    Welcome to the forum...
you can plug it to your usb por for the keyboard thing...
there is no port replicator right now but I bet there will be either by apple or by third party soon.
But if you have more budget, go with apple bluetooth wireless keyboard, since the MAcBook has built in blue tooth in their MAcBook.
It doesn't have to be a Mac, but it is easier to use it since the simbols and the layout is slightly differ.
And for external monitor, make sure which interface your external monitor use, for some of older and even recent model still using VGA HDDB-15 interface, and it need mini DVI to VGA adapter.
    Good Luck.

  • USB port stops working

    Tis a minor issue but...
The keyboard / mouse stops working on my duel 2 GHz G5 and the cure is unpluging from the USB port and plugging back in. Nothing is plugged into the keyboard port and the other port is taken by a Preps i-Key dongle. This seems to have started happening after upgrading to 10.4.8. Could this be indicitive of a more serious problem?

It's an Apple Pro keyboard and mouse, the dongle is
plugged into the Mac and not the keyboard. The same
set-up is, and has been working on all our other
    Macs.
The sleep issue sounds interesting- hum, maybe...
Is your keyboard plugged into one of the USB connections on an Apple monitor? If so, you may want to change that connection to one that is on the G5 itself. My monitor came with a warning note indicating that problems will likely occur if the keyboard is connected to the monitor.
I also had a problem with the automatic sleep function. After much trouble-shooting and a logic board replacement, it was concluded that coming out of the automatic sleep function with any USB device active would freeze the entire USB bus. After disabling automatic sleep in system preferences, I've had no freezing problems. My machine works fine with the manual sleep function in the Apple Menu.

  • New Keyboard (usb hub question)

Aloha, before I buy the new keyboard, I would like someone with real world experience to tell me that the usb 2 hubs on the keyboard actually work, or is that just an Apple marketing ploy ? Will plugging in an iPod, or some other "power hungry" device really work? Mahalo in advance for any facts, info. JB

The webpage for the new keyboards contains the following regarding the wired keyboard:
"Two USB 2.0 ports provide high-speed connectivity for your iPod, Mighty Mouse, digital camera, and other USB-based electronic devices. Yes, we did think of everything."
I'm not sure what to make of this. I have a small external hardrive that worked initially with the keyboard ports, but it no longer works. The ports on a replacement keyboard that I received do not work either. The folks at Apple Care seem to think that many of these devices will not work with the keyboard, but they also seem to be surprised when I point out what the website says. It does sound like the marketing department needs to talk with the tech folks.
I'll try it with my wife's ipod, but it seems like the keyboards are not functioning they way they have been advertised to work.

  • Restrict the Keyboard entry and entry through scanner only

    Dear Experts,
I have a scenario, A manufacturing company while billing products to the customers will scan the serial nos in the sale order. The serial numbers are wrongly typed during the manual entry.
Hence Business has implemented Bar Code scanning for scanning serial numbers. Still users are manually entering serial numbers,
To bring tight control in the process ... Business is asking to restrict the manual input and allow only Bar code scanning for serial number entry.
I have tried the below to implement the same:
The serial number field is made to display mode by making screen - input = 0.
Now the text field is brought to display mode. But unable to scan the data in that field .
Pl help if you have any idea on this.
    Thanks in advance.
    Vidhya

Answer from Michael Evershed here: Re: Restrict keyboard entry allow only scanning
    > If your barcode scanner is the type that plugs into the keyboard port of the computer SAP can't distinguish between the barcode scanner and data entered by the keyboard.
You have to ask your scanner manufacturer if there is a solution (for example, like using an encoder at scanner level, that will be decoded by the abap program)
