Keyboard problem after cleaning

I decided to clean my aluminium keyboard yesterday, and some of the keys have since stopped working. Several keys are also typing by themselves (if that makes sense).
Can anything be done, or do I have to fork out for a new keyboard?

How did you clean it, using fluids? If you did it's probably best to let it dry naturally rather than applying a hairdryer. If the weather's good (36 degrees here ) let it air outside. If that doesn't fix it sounds like it's time for a replacement .

  • Migrated User Account Keyboard Problem AFTER Login

I have a brand-new MacBookPro (with multi-touch trackpad) that came with Leopard preinstalled. When I first started up the new computer, I set up a new administrator user account first. Then I used Migration Assistant to migrate my primary user account from my PowerBook G4, which is running the latest version of Tiger. I can log into my old user account with the same password I have always used, and everything looks fine--my old desktop is there, my Mail, iCal and iTunes settings all look great, etc.--but I can't use the keyboard. I can use the mouse to click on menus; the keys for the volume and backlight controls work, and some of the keys on the right side of the keyboard work (which seems particularly weird), but I can't do anything else with the keyboard. When I log out of the account and try to go back to the new admin account, the keyboard no longer works at all until I reboot. If I go directly into the new admin account, the keyboard is fine; it only starts locking up AFTER I log into my old user account. I have not had any keyboard problems with any other user accounts that I have created from scratch on the MacBookPro, nor have I had problems with the other user accounts I migrated from the PowerBook. After consulting with an Apple rep on the phone, I have tried the following things:
    1. deleting my migrated keychain file on the problem user account and letting it make a new login keychain;
    2. deleting the original default keychain on the PowerBook and re-running the Migration Assistant;
    3. deleting the problem user on the MacBookPro using the option of creating a disk image, and then creating an empty file in the Users folder with the same name as the problem user account and then dragging the files from the disk image into the folder, and then creating a new version of the user account with the same name, password, etc.;
    4. running Disk Utility to fix permissions (multiple times);
    5. I have completely erased and reinstalled the system on the MacBookPro using the install DVDs twice. The first time, I ran Migration Assistant immediately after the "Welcome," and the second time I set up a new administrator account first and then ran Migration Assistant.
    6. I have also tried the steps outlined in this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306840.
    7. I have tried moving my user files over by hand but then I have a ton of permission problems and I was having trouble getting my Mail settings/mailboxes to move over properly. I've spent hours and hours on this.
I have NEVER had so much trouble upgrading to a new computer or a new OS in all the years I've owned Macs! What am I missing???

Well...I'm not sure which of the following fixed my problem, but once I realized it was something to do with the numeric keypad keys, I went into both the Keyboard & Mouse preferences and the Universal Access preferences and I made sure that I set everything back to the default settings. I suspect that going to Keyboard&Mouse-->Keyboard Shortcuts and clicking on "Restore Defaults" is what did the trick. So far, so good. I hope this helps somebody else; I couldn't find anything else anywhere about this somewhat quirky problem.

  • Thinkpad G40 keyboard problems after updating from W98 to W7

    Hi community users.
I'm new here with a, for me, typical problem.
I’m having a problem with my Laptop keyboard IBM ThinkPad G40, type: 23884SG, Windows 7.
Since I updated from Windows 98 to Windows 7 the keyboard definition is wrong. I’m not able to find the right configuration of it on base of the standard list of country and language definitions in W7.
Who can help me with this.
I already installed some drivers from the Lenova site but nothing seems to help.
So the problem is that I can’t find the right service from the country and language menu to the keyboard in W7.
    All suggestions are very welcome.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dirk
Moderator Note; s/n & UUID edited for members own protection

    Hi Vince,
Thanks for your response to my problem.
Problem isn't the choice of the specific language. The problem after the update is that I'm not able to choose the right combination of language and the type of keyboard selection in Windows 7. The selection list is long: from South-Africa to Sweden.
Although most of the characters on the keys on the lower part of the keyboard correspond with the ones on the screen but especially the keys on the upper part don't.
So I'm searching to a correct selection of the combination language and specific type of keyboard. Or there must be some driver witch can be download.
    Looking forward to the feedback.
    Kind regards,
    Dirk

  • Problem after cleaning keyboard on a T410

Hi, I just cleaned a T410 with a spray foam, as I always have done with the fluid proof thinkpad keyboard. But this the left button of the trackpoint mouse does not work anymore. Y removed the button and can see there is dust or dirty there. Also, when I apply compressed air I can see both transparent film separating from each other. There is nothing different from the right button that works fine. Does anyone what else can I try in order to fix this problem? Also, I would to understand why this had happened. Thanks Oliver

    Hello everyone,
One thing to remember is that the keyboard is not "fluid proof" it is "spill resistant" these are two very different distinctions and I would not use a foam cleaner to clean a Thinkpad unless its specifically recommended. Drying it out is the best option, I would prefer using a hairdryer on a low setting rather than making a thinkpad cake in the oven.  That's just my personal opinion though.
    Cheers,
    Ed.

  • T410 : keyboard problem after juice spill

    Hi,
I have recently spilled some fruit juice (sweet and sticky) on my t410's keyboard. Here are the problems caused and the different steps I took to try and solve them :
    1. Switched off the laptop, waited a day. Switched it back on. The laptop worked normally except for various keys, mostly in the first row of letters (qwertz...) that didn't work (didn't react when pressed), and others who were sticky and got stuck when pressed.
    2. Took out the keyboard and soaked it in alcohol (normal alcohol as I couldn't find isopropil alcohol) to wash out the juice deposits. Wiped with towels, then let it dry half a day. Put it back in. It was worse than before, the power button seemed to be shorted or sth. The laptop could not be tuned on with the power button. It could be turned on using the fingerprint reader though. But then it had a strage behaviour, kept turning on and off on its own.
    3. Took out the keybord again, removed all the keys, including the power/mute/volume... Sprayed it repeatedly with contact cleaner (Vistony brand, made in Peru) . Then let it dry. This didn't improve much.
    4. Waited over the week end, tried again. Now the power button works. When I turn on the laptop, before it can boot, it beeps repeatedly and shows an error essage : "error 210 stuck key : 10". Using an external USB keyboard, I can press escape, and boot to Windows. But the laptop's keyboard is unreactive and there is a continuous beep (frequency of about 2 beeps per second, continuous). In the Lenovo diagnostix test for the keyboard, none of the keys work.
Is there anything I can do to try and recover the keyboard ? Or just buy a replacement ? If I could at least get rid of the beep, I could use the laptop at home with the external keyboard, until a solution if found to fix the laptop's keyboard.
    Cheers

    dondrito, welcome to the forum,
I admire your determination to save your keyboard, but honestly feel it's time to part yourself from it and accept it has sadly departed and find a replacement.
An option would be to attach the system to a port replicator or mini-dock, which have power on switches, detach the internal keyboard from the mainboard and start the system from the port rep. or mini dock after attaching an external keyboard to either or your notebook. Not a good solution if you need to travel.
p.s. a port rep. or mini-dock will cost more than a keyboard.

  • Problems after cleaning my notebook

I cleaned my cpt with wet piece of cloth! Started my nightmare, cpt was not able to boot keep getting USB drive errors mouse errors or keyboard errors on BIOS.
After finally boot but keep turning off itself. Dont know what to do!

Computer or notebook cannot be cleaned with wet piece of cloth. Wetness is very dangerous for electric components. I am afraid some electronic parts are wet now and this is the problem.
Who knows how you done this?
Anyway leave it for a while or try to have it dry again and check if you can use it again in hope it will work properly. Hopefully you have not damaged board electronic.

  • T410 - Keyboard problems after Windows 8.1 upgrade

    Hi to all!
Recently i'm facing huge problems with the keyboard of my T410.
The Laptop shuts down when I press "Alt Gr", if I press shutdown - the screen spins several times before shutting down, if I use the arrow-keys the screen also flips, the normal letter-keys won't work at all. Every pressed Button makes a little beepsound.
The scrolling-funktion on the touchpad doesnt work either.
Using an USB-Keyboard / Mouse, I have no problems at all.
I have installed the latest drivers and bios-update.
This problem is there after I upgraded windows 8 to windows 8.1. All windows-updates have been made.
Do you have any tips to use my Laptop as a laptop again? At the moment I have a small desktop PC as the laptop won't work without usb-keyboard and muse.
I looking forward to your replies. Best regards

I don't no what in-place means but I installed the Upgrade to 8.1 via the Windosw Store on a running Windows8 system.
I just re-ran System Update in the latest version, checked windows updates, checked the drivers via the lenovo support page manually, latest bios...but still doesnt work.
In the Windows 8.1 Tested System List from the lenovo homepage which I just found is the T410 not listed. So I assume it could be a compatibility problem.
    Back to Win8?

There are bugs in every version of every software product ever made.
Nothing described so far indicates that the issue is the result of a bug.
    Try some basic troubleshooting.
    On the iDevice:
Reset the device by pressing and holding the home and power buttons until the white Apple logo appears
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    On the ATV:
    Settings > General > Reset
    For the network:
    Power cycle the router

  • Keyboard problems after downloading windows 7

when windows 7 first came out i downloaded it to my newly bought macbook pro (bootcamp didnt support windows 7 at the time). After i downloaded it the keyboard is working fine except for some symbols. The question mark symbol is É, the dash symbol i é. and other weird symbols that are not suppose to be their such as, éÉèÈ^¨ÇàÀ.

Let's assume you installed 64-bit Windows 7. (Seems like everybody but me prefers it.)
Wouldn't hurt to uninstall and reinstall the TVAP. I notice there are several listed. Try them all.
Toshiba Value Added Package (TVAP) for Windows 7/Vista (64) (Version 1.2.27_64 - Released 10/20/09)
       util_tvap_TC00215000H.exe
Toshiba Value Added Package (TVAP) for Windows 7/Vista (64) (Version 1.2.27_64 - Released 09/03/09)
       util_tvap_TC00215000G.exe
Toshiba Value Added Package for Windows 7 (64) (Version 1.2.26_64 - Released 10/07/09)
       util_tvap_TC00215000F.exe
Mystery to me why the first two have identical version numbers. Won't be the first time.
Someone with a similar problem reported that downgrading the display driver solved it.

  • Keyboard problems after xorgconfig Dell VostroV1400 [Solved]

    Hi all,
I installed Arch on my Dell Vostro V1400.  I installed xorg too.  Then I did hwd -xa.  After this I tried 'startx'.  The screen showing xterm came but the keyboard and touchpad were not working.  I could neither go to the console nor do Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot.  Did hard shutdown.
I then tried xorgconfig but found there was no mention of my dell vostro keyboard, the X3100 graphics card, touchpad etc in it.  To add to it my laptop manual does not have any information about horizontal and vertical syc rates.  It only states that the laptop display is 14.1" WXGA capable of 1280x800 resolution.  Nothing else.  So, I choose the defaluts.

Even after xorgconfig the same problem.  I can start X with startx but the moment X comes, the keyboard and touchpad freeze.  Don't know what to do.  FYI, Dell has stopped this particular model V1400 and I could not find any information in their website.  As you may be knowing, almost all the 'reviews' talk only about the external appearences, how the camera is,  etc... stuff only.  So, no information there too.
Kindly help me to get X working.

tomk wrote:Finally, if you need to post long config files, use code tags, not quote tags. I have fixed it for you this time.
I'm sorry about that.  Will take care next time.
By the way, the problem is solved.  Somebody in the IRC pointed me to a wiki related to input-hotplugging.  Frankly, I did not understand much of it except that I needed to install package/s: xf86-input-evdev, xf86-input-vmmouse and xf86-input-synaptics.
Also, was the advice that 'hal' should be included in the DAEMONS, if not already done and that it should come before anything X related in the list.  Edited '/etc/rc.conf' accordingly and X is working fine now.
    Thanks,

  • Permission Problems After Clean Intall Accessing External Drives

Okay, the ubiquitous permissions problem. Perhaps apple should release a system update that strips this BS out, as single users and home users, do we really need this? I'm just driving my Ferrari to the grocery store! It is just complications that nobody needs.
So, with a fat chance of that happening, is there a DEFINITIVE paper/instruction on permissions? Please point me to it. I've tried here and there is nothing that seems to work for me. I'd like to NOT have to learn anything and continue without messing around with this crap, but it did it to me, so now I'm forced to screw around to fix it.
(I used to be a system admin years ago so I can take a fairly technical approach, but I'd rather not. (Puh-leeze! No terminal instructions.)
    Here's my problem:
Having had a problem with corrupt login items and being unable to uninstall them, (the machine crashed and rebooted) I was left to perform a clean install of my system.
I have numerous hard drives attached.
Well, upon a successful install and migration of settings from Safari and Firefox and such, I was gently told that a couple of my drives are not accessible by me, the user. (I can see'em, but some apps like transmission won't write to them. Or backup software cannot backup to them.) I'm currently setup up with my daily account/user as the admin, with the super-admin account dormant and not used, as I've been instructed. (My previous system had me using my super-admin account all the time.)
How do I go about setting permissions to reaccess these drives without checking the "ignore permissions" box?
Is the simplist thing to do, to just copy/backup the drives, erase them under my present account, and re-install the data to fix this permission BS?
I've done the "fix permissions" thing and it does not help.
Do drives that you create with a former system user, retain the user profile that created them even after you install a new system, thus causing this problem?
    Thanks

What users do you have defined on your system?
    Herkime wrote:
Thanks for the help, guys. I downloaded the app and will take a look at that to fix my problems.
What user do you want to use to look at the data?
Decide what user you are going to logon as.
Use BatChmod to make this the owner of the data. The group should be whatever is the group assigned to your logon user.
Do drives that you create with a former system user, retain the user profile that created them even after you install a new system, thus causing this problem?
Files you created with root still have root permissions.
The other 5 diskes, internal, externals FW, and removeables FW toasters, were all created under the old system, using the super-admin user. That designation is gone. (Actually, I recreated the same name/login on the newly installed system, along with my everyday admin user log in.
I get the feeling I'm stuck in a little permission limbo, as the disks are looking for the old super-user and that's gone. Correct?
I assume by super-user you mean root. You can enable the root account again if you wish. There is not need.
I'm not sure what user, or group I should be setting everything too, now. Me, as the admin/user or
Who is Herk the super-admin? How did you define Herk.
By definition super-user is root. You are not allowed to rename root. So the super user isn't Herk.
A user can be given admin rights. This doesn't give the user super user/root rights. Root can read & write any file on the system. This root is the super user.
By Herk do you mine you gave Herk admin rights?
    Bottom line:
[] Decide what user you will be using on your system.
[] Change all permission you your external drives to match user & group of that id.
Some people define two user on their system. This way maybe more secure, but with more hassles.
    standard user
    admin user
    I run with one user:
admin user. This lets me install programs without have to change to another user. It doesn't let me look at system data. I cannot look at other userids data. ( I want to look at data I do not have permissions to, I can use the terminal to gain access. )

  • 2nd Gen iPod Touch keyboard problem after 2.2

So I updated to 2.2 soon as it came out and after a little while chatting back and forth with friends some letters of the on screen keyboard stopped showing the letter you just pressed. I am not sure if I am making myself clear however when you press a key on the keyboard a bigger label appears above your finger and if you press the key for a little while longer the label expands to show a few more options. Well the more you use the keyboard the more keys lose that bigger kind of label so pressing the key does not display the little icon above it.
If I switch off and back on then they come back for a brief amount of time less than 10 mins or so and then they start disappearing again a few at a time till no letter has a label any more. Reverting to 2.1.1 fixed the problem but I'd rather be using 2.2 .
Does anyone else have noticed that or am I the only with that issue?

I know exactly what your talking about and have experienced the same thing, all I can say is the last two upgrades have messed with the performance of my touch, in fact two touches are in my home, both having same issues and connecting to wifi ***** now. Good luck, I'll stay posted to see if anyone offers help.

  • Wireless Keyboard problems after Installing OS 10.5.8

I've been using an Apple wireless keyboard with my G5 (PPC) running on OS 10.4 for about three years without any problems. I upgraded to Leopard 10.5.8 a few weeks ago and immediately lost my bluetooth connection. I installed new batteries, trashed the com.apple.bluetooth.plist, reinstalled the software, and the problem still persists.
I removed it from the list of Bluetooth devices with the intention of reinstalling it as a new device, but every time I try to add the keyboard via the Bluetooth Setup Assistant, the name of the keyboard shows up but it does not pair.
Does anyone have any ideas or solution to my problem? I would greatly appreciate your help.

    Barry,
I installed the firmware 101 because the computer says 201 is not required on this computer.
It finds the keyboard only if I turn the power switch (with the green light at the bottom of the keyboard) off and on repeatedly. This time, it gives the keyboard a new name (Apple Wireless Keyboard). I continue to the nest step, which is pairing. again, after switching on and off, it gives ma a passkey. the little spinning circle that indicates a job is being processed, continues to spin. I enter the passkey #. Eventually the Following error message appears:
"The pairing attempt was unsuccessful. If using a passkey, make sure you are entering it properly on your keyboard. When ready, click Continue to try again".
On two occasions, the Keyboard showed up with the other bluetooth devices but disappeared within a second, and the error message appeared again.

  • Re: Keyboard problems after upgrade to Windows 8 Pro

I have an HP Media Center Desktop PC, about 3 years old, with a Logitech wired keyboard. I had no problems at all until I upraded to Windows 8 64 bit from Vista. After a period of inactivity (anywhere from a half hour to several hours) the keyboard ceases to function. Nothing I type appears on the screen. It's as if I had disconnected the keyboard. It happens in any application, even the user login. I have no issue with the mouse. That's a wireless HP mouse.

    Hello Spece:
Welcome to HP's forum. Please post your computer's information so we can direct you to the right software and drivers. Example ; HP Touchsmart 600-1050 Windows 7 64 bit. Thank you frrw
