Hi Rob,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your running into an issue with the keyboard on your MacBook Pro. The article linked below provides suggestions that will resolve most keyboard issues like the one you described.
OS X Mavericks: If keys on your keyboard don’t work
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13809
If other keys don’t work
You may have accidentally set an option that changes how your keyboard operates.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, then click “Text to Speech.” If “Speak selected text when the key is pressed” is selected, deselect it or click Change Key to select another key.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Keyboard. Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must hold down a key longer than usual before it’s recognized.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Mouse & Trackpad. Make sure Mouse Keys is off. If Mouse Keys is on, pressing keys in the numeric keypad moves the pointer instead of entering numbers.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Input Sources. Select “Show Input menu in menu bar.” Open the Input menu and make sure the correct keyboard layout is selected. To see the keyboard layout, click Keyboard, then choose “Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar.”
I hope this helps.

  • Keyboard typing weird letters and symbols

    Hi all
    I have tried to use my Macbook Pro this morning and when I type its typing the wrong letters
    and symbols...................can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Jo

    I just spent hour trying to fix tihs on my iMac and could find the answer so I wanted to post it for someone else. Mine was typing in crazy symbols (åß∂ƒ©).
    Also I could not Command + Tab (shoot me), and when I clicked on a window in another app it hid the windows I was working in.
    I tried new keyboards. And the system preferences stuff - system preferences - language & text - input sources. then select US. This didn't fix it.
    Then I tried to change the keyboard shortcuts in the same window - spotlight (on left), unclick the show spotlight search field and the other one bellow. Then hit the com + Spacebar. This didn't fix it.
    Then i did it and double check that i did it right and still didn't fix it.
    So I called apple support and they gave me the magical key to fix this.
    Turn off your computer. Unplug for 30 sec, and everything attached. Then power it back on and hurry and hold Command + Option + P + R. I held Command + Option + P with one hand and then after I hit power I added the R.
    The computer will make one chime. Keep holding it. I will then shut down and make one more chime and you can let go.
    Taa daa!!

  • Macbook Pro's keyboard is typing random letters/symbols- can't figure out- HELP!

    OK, so everything was just fine, worked wonderfully, then I found my little chihuahua puppy walking on the keyboard, she is very tiny, so not heavy at all, & I caught it pretty quick... I DID see she may have had a little bit of wetness on the bottom of a paw, as there was a bit here or there, but it really wasn't much at all, and I was able to soak it all right up with a tissue, it really wasn't enough water, or in a bad enough spot, for me to worry at all about any damage being done- however- while trying to enter text in text edit, I realized that all the keys on my keyboard were either not responding at all, or typing completely random letters/symbols instead of the intended characters-  for example, every time I'd type/press one single letter on the keyboard, one time, instead of that letter, it would type TWO completely different letters, like 'ht' , at the same time- so every "d" would produce "ht" over and over... sometimes it looks like hebrew or russian letters, I don't even know! So I'm pretty darn sure my puppy must have typed some crazy key combo that did, well, who knows what- I've tried looking this up here on these forums, for a couple days now, and thought that I maybe figured it out a couple of times, but nope- no luck. It isn't my language setting, my option key isn't stuck, I'm lost! I saw a couple people who seemed to know what they were talking about, who were trying to help others with similar problems, and they asked the person to enter "asdfg" into text edit, and to post what that produced instead of the "asdfg" so.... I planned on doing that very thing right now, but there seems to have been a new development- as now, when I go into text edit, none of my keys work/respond when hit- except for a few, the following keys in lower case ";" " ' " "/" "[" "]"
    "\" "=" & "-" THEN, when I hit the following keys, here's what they type:
    c= cde3
    v= frv4
    b= bgt5
    n= hny6
    m= jmu7
    comma= ik8,
    period= lo9.
    Then sometimes, when I hit the 1 or 2 key, the letter "z" starts to type constantly filling up the whole text edit box, like, "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... & so on"
    If anyone has any idea what is really going on here, PLEASE help me out- I love & need this laptop for work, school, etc. and right now, I am no where near an apple store, don't even have good phone reception up here- (on a mountain!) so I'm really hoping that someone can help me figure this out once and for all! THANK YOU for reading this lengthy post, & thanks in advance to anyone who tries to solve this mystery!

    I should point out I was having a very similar issue with no known liquid coming in contact with the machine. The keys that were affected were close together: my e, d, and c keys would consistantly type weird combinations of characters, some of them very out there, stuff like ¥©þ®. An external keyboard would work fine.
    After a few days it just stopped, and the only reason I can think of is that overheating was the problem. I was playing "cookie clicker" a game where you often leave the game running overnight, and I noticed that the fan was often working very hard and that the computer got pretty warm, even when leaving it on a hard surface. So after three days of symptoms I stopped playing that game and a day or two later everything was back to normal. My e, d, and c keys were inconsistant for the first 24 hours (sometimes worked, sometimes didn't), but now they're working working fine.

  • Macbook Pro keyboard typing in random letters and symbols with certain keys

    My mother is not a very tech savvy person. We recently upgraded her Windows PC to a Macbook Pro. A few days ago she went to some website about working from home. I'm pretty sure it was a scam website. Anyway after that the keyboard started acting weird.
    Certain keys will either not work or just type random keystrokes. The keys that I know of are
    7= 123477
    U= IOTUYw
    J= adfgjs
    M= Will sometimes minimize the active window and other times will type out random symbols (æ∆¬)
    :; key= 0 - Esc, and changes the volume
    ' key= Tab, random symbols, enables caps lock
    Eject Key= § changes volume
    I had Sophos Anti Virus installed on it, and after running a full scan it didn't come up with anything. To be safe i decided to completely wipe her Macbook. I also did the 7-pass DOD Standard erase.
    After that i resinstalled Lion on her computer. After restarting the same issue persists. I tried seeing if there was an OSX update that needed to be installed, and that didnt fix anything. I also ran the Apple hardware test. It came up with no issues.
    I also checked to see if foriegn keyboards were turned on, etc.
    I have no idea what to do now. Using my bluetooth keyboard works fine. The keys type what they should. She says he hasn't spilt anything on it, but she works as a daycare provider and sometimes the little kids watch movies or youtube videos on it.
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • While typing, the keyboard starts typing multiple letters. I'm fed up of this. I don't think I am doing something at my own, it's happening at its own. Is it because of some problem in the hardware since OS and system refresh could not resolve this.

    While i type, the keyboard starts typing multiple letters. I'm fed up of this. I think it's happening at its own. Is it because of some problem in the hardware since OS and system refresh could not resolve this please help.

    First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
    If you have done this like I describe above and the problem continues I suggest you contact Apple Support or make an appointment at an Apple Store and have your iPad examined by a technician.

  • I have an iPod Touch 4th Generation and it's acting weird. It looks to be something like a calibration error but i don't exactly know. It won't let me tap letters and symbols such as ' ; R and D'. Help?

    So my iPod Touch forth gen is acting up. When i try to slide the button to unlock the lock screen, it slides back. It takes several tries for me to do that. I'm able to tap the numbers for the code, but when i try to send messages to my friends or write one of my fanfictions, it goes haywire. It'll enter in letters and words that i didn't even tap on. When i try to tap on a couple of things in particular, it ignores it. '; R D and ~' are some of the letters and symbols that I'm having issues with. Can someone please tell me what's going on? I've restarted it dozens of times, re-entered my passcode, deleted data, and even re-downloaded the keyboards a couple of times. Help!

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • When I send emojis to my friend who also has an iphone, it changes my message into random letters and things. Help?

    Every time I send my friend an emoji using SMS, he receives it as a whole bunch of letters and symbols and sometimes the bubble is blank(he also has an iPhone btw). Why does it do this and  can I fix it. Also, I see all of his messages and emojis anytime. It's my messages that are the problem.

    No, "My Number" was not listed in my Phone menu, I had to manually type it it.  Is there a way for that number to automatically be listed in that "My Number" spot?  Would that maybe have something to do with my phone number not being listed as an option in the "Send and Receive" spot under messaging???

  • Recipients of my email have been getting a bunch of scrambled code, letters and symbols, inserted into the body of my email - preceded by "span.IP". How to fix?

    Some recipients of my emails have been getting a bunch of code, letters and symbols, inserted into the email preceded by "span.IP". What is causing this and how can I fix it? Also (may be related) when i start up Thunderbird, I get the following error message:
    Secure connection failed
    live.mozillamessaging.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided. (Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)
    This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
    If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.
    Or you can add an exception…

    Browser Safeguard apparently attempts to intercept your secure connection to the server, so just uninstall it. Reboot your computer, and run a malware check.
    It's also possible that it issued certificates for secure sites you visit. Those self signed certs could then be used by IE, so you should get rid of them as well.
    In IE under Internet Options - Content tab click on Certificates. It opens to the Personal tab. Look for certificates issued by DO_NOT_TRUST_FiddlerRoot. Those are the ones created by Browser Safeguard.
    Both, Thunderbird and Firefox use their own certificate store independent from the Windows certificate store. So they should not be affected by those certs.
    For the future watch out for additional software being sneaked in when installing a program.

    I'm in iPhone 5.  I transfer photos to a Windows 7 PC, using the USB cable.  Lately, the photos are appearing in Windows Explorer within monthly folders, with gibberish titles.  The folder names will be 8 random letters and numeric characters.  I tend to let photos build up, so there are about 2 years worth of these monthly folders… Between 20 and 25.  This is a huge hassle… I'm unable to tell what months are in each folder, by the folder name.…  Have to open each folder to see which month is in there.  I want to be able to look at all the photos on the iPhone in one view, as I was able to in the past.  How do I stop this foldering of photos, by months??  Thank you.  BC

    I have the same issue. I searched and finally got only one answer is -- Apple suggest customer using iMAC to transfer and backup photos instead of Windows. How great the solution is it!

  • TS2634 My wireless keyboard is auto filling letters and numbers what do I do to stop this?

    My wireless keyboard is auto filling letters and numbers what do I do to turn it off?

    Hi Pegfraser,
    Does this happen only with the wireless keyboard and not the touch keyboard?  And which Apps does this happen with?
    In general, auto fill is a settings thing.
    For Safari:  Settings, Safari, AutoFill
    System Wide: General, Keyboard, Auto-Correction (may seem like auto fill)
    and you can setup Shortcuts in the Keyboard settings, but you would know if you'd done that.
