Keyboard producing extra letters when typing and impacting system performance

I’m having some issues with my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15. The Apple tech guy was baffled at the symptoms I was experiencing; he was unable to help (the MacBook Pro itself has not been inspected) so I thought I would see if anyone else had a view as to what the issue could be. I’m happy to fix it myself if possible (I’m quite comfortable with doing repairs/upgrades/general maintenance on Macs and PCs at large) and would rather avoid a hefty fee from the Apple store or other repair services if it can be avoided (unless the error is due to faulty hardware where Apple will fix free of charge).
The issue lies with using the internal keybaord. Most of the keys on the keyboard work just fine, a couple don’t, however when I use the internal keyboard it significantly slows down animations (i.e. clicking on the Applications icon on the dock will take a good 5-7 seconds for it to finish the pop-up). There hasn’t been any liquid spillage or suffered from any falls so I’m not quite sure how this problem came about. These are some of the issues/symptoms I’m having which may help in a diagnosis:
-Shift key is stuck and the Mac will boot into Safe Mode on its own. Holding down the Option key upon pressing the power button until the spinning gear appears will allow the Mac to boot normally. I can use an external keyboard and the Mac runs just fine. However, if I use the internal keyboard....
-Animations run slowly and it cannot load graphics programs such as iMovie. (An error message pops up, but I do not have this latop with me at time of posting this to find what it is. If you need to know what the error message is, let me know and I will post it here when I get home). Even though I’m in ‘normal mode’ for less of a better term, using the internal keyboard will result in the Mac performing like it is in 'safe mode' until…
-Pressing any key on an external keyboard. The slow animation issue is resolved (i.e. clicking on the Application icon on dock pops up in less than a second as per normal) and the Mac will return to running as normal and everything is very responsive. iMovie will now load correctly (without the error message).
-Some letters when pressed on the internal keyboard will type another letter directly after it (e.g. If pressing ‘q’ it will type as ‘QT’ (in caps due to the Shift key being stuck), same for pressing ‘t’ will display as “TQ”. This also happens to ‘a’ as it will type ‘AB’ and ‘b’ where it will display ‘BA’. In total about 6 or 7 keys around the keyboard are affected where pressing one key will result in it being typed in caps AND a second correspoding letter. Pressing that second corresponding letter will also type in caps and it's "linked" key.
-Selecting individual files with the track pad (after pressing a key on the internal keyboard) will pick multiple items within a folder as if you were clicking and dragging to select multiple files. If I click on one file and move the cursor (without holding the click or ‘touch to drag’) to a file below, it will select everything between the two selections. Pressing a key on the external keyboard returns everything including the track pad back to normal
I’ve performed a clean install of Snow Leopard which took a little longer than usual. The install disc took some time to actually load into the installation screen, roughly 5-7 minutes longer. The external keyboard doesn’t appear to work on boot up until I get to the log in screen. I’ve cleaned inside Mac from what minimal dust was there. Finally, I’ve been unable to reset the PRAM or SMC as the laptop boots into Safe Mode due to the Shift key being stuck and the external keyboard not being recognised until I reach the log in screen to enter my password. Other keys don’t appear to be working (i.e. holding down C to boot from disc and other key commands on start-up do not work), the only key on the internal keyboard that appear to work on boot is Option which allows me to bypass the 'auto-safe mode' boot.
I’m quite sure this is hardware related and if feasible I will fix myself, if not I’m happy to use an external keyboard (except when needing to perform boot commands which is where I’ll run into some issues).System specs are as follows:
MacBook Pro 15 - Mid 2010 (April)
2.4GHz Intel Core i5
4GB RAM
160GB hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce GT330M 256MB
I’d appreciate any possible answers you have. Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, I’m quite sure this is a unique issue so I’d be surprised to learn someone else has had this problem too after all the hours of research I’ve done!
Thanks.

lol, I was going to add "as long as it's not doing that all the time" ...but was hoping for the quick fix. You might want to check your Activity Monitor and see which program or background process is causing the activity ...have you installed anything lately that coincided with this problem? You also might want to try booting into Safe Mode to see if things still persist.

I am unable to control my iPad 2. When typing and deleting it generates random letters! Any advice

Start with this and see how it goes. Quit all apps completely and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Keyboard input skips letters when typing quickly

I type very fast and noticed that if I type a word with a double letter (like two t's in 'letter), the second repeated character is often missing. If I type a bit slower, the problem is resolved.
Technically, this should not be a keyboard repeat issue, since it relates to two separate keystrokes, not holding down the key for repeat. Nonetheless, I set the repeat rate to max, the delay to minimum -- yet the problem persists.
It is very distinctly an issue with speed. My friends who type at a more moderate pace have no problem. In other words, it doesn't appear to be a defect particular to my machine. Rather, it is seems like a parameter that is just not capable of recognizing keystrokes in such rapid succession.
Note: I cannot reproduce the problem on a PC laptop, which seems to have a faster keyboard response.
Is this an OS issue that can be fixed with a hack? Or is this a limitation on the hardware?

My third defective macbook did the same thing after coming back from RSD repairs which included a keyboard replacement. If you didn't hit each key with a very deliberate stoke, it had a good chance of not being recognized. My fourth macbook has other issues but it does have a perfectly functioning keyboard now. My first defective macbook had sticking keys due to excess glue under the keys.
Amazing with something as simple as a keyboard, apple still can't get it right. This is the first device in almost 30 years of using and buying computers I've ever had to worry about a stupid keyboard working.
I'd suggest you visit a store which sells macbooks and see if the behaviour occurs there as well.

  • Keyboard misses letters when typing

When I am typing on my keyboard that came with my computer, it misses letters.  I type on several other keyboards and they all work fine so I don't think it is my touch.  Had this for 3 months now and Best Buy refuses to take care of the problem for me.  Can anybody help me?

  • Missing letters when typing on Satellite M105

I am using a Satellite M105-S3084 (Windows XP MCE) and have been unsuccessfully struggling with a keyboard problem since I first bought it. I tend to type fast, especially double letters and find that very often only one of the double letters shows up on screen. For instance "kk" would result in "k" only and similar missing letters even if not doubled. This causes a lot of wasted time correcting what I type.
I know that there are settings under Control Panel\Keyboard ("repeat delay" and "repeat rate") that permit setting speeds, but I have found them frustrating to use. I've tried both at various settings and still have a problem with missing letters. Maybe I just do not know which way to set which setting and I am just getting frustrated, or there is another setting somewhere else whic I do not know about.
Have others had this problem with mising letters while typing and found a solution?
    Thanks.

    Hello Jeff
If I am remembering well there was similar issue with Satellite L10 or L20, I can not remember. This was fixed with new BIOS version. US notebook models are not known to me but if you have time you can check Ask IRIS on US Toshiba page. There you can find many interesting documents.
    Check it under http://askiris.toshiba.com/ToshibaSupportSite/supportcentral/supportcentral.do?id=m1
Maybe you will be lucky and find something about your issue with keyboard.

  • Slight latency when typing and scrolling is Safari

Something is wrong my Safari.  There is a slight delay when typing and when I scroll really long webpages that are fully loaded into the browser.  I created a new system profile and verified this problem is NOT happening there.  It's very annoying and I don't know what is causing this.  It only happens in Safari and no other program that requires typing and scrolling.  Can someone help?
    Thanks!

I created a new system profile and verified this problem is NOT happening there.
It only happens in Safari and no other program that requires typing and scrolling.
Since it's a user specific issue and only Safari, more then likely a third party Safari add on that's causing this.
Go to Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
    Deselect:  Enable plug-ins
    Quit then relaunch Safari.l
If you notice a difference when typing and the scrolling issue disappeared, follow the instructions here >  Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

  • Slow response when typing and/or pulling up new message

I do not have any Add-ons or extensions, so that is not the issue. I have a new computer running Windows 7, so I don't believe that is the issue either. But I have a lot of "hour-glass" time when typing and when clicking on emails to open the message. Is just seems to be responding slow. Is it Thunderbird ... or my computer?

As for Thunderbird, the only relation I could see is in line spell checking. Could you please check your Thunderbird preferences, Composition, Spelling. Does it help to uncheck 'Enable spell check as you type'?
If not, I could imagine this to be related to a virus scanner, or a display driver that is not up to date. You might be able to get an update from it from the manufacturer of your video adapter.

  • Safari black screen and no letters when typing

I have just purchased my first iPhone, the 16 gig 3GS and having issues with it. I immediately updated the firmware to the 3.1.2 when I got home and never really played with it upon initial purchase so I do not have anything to determine what exactly is the issue. Here is are my problems...
Note: I did not back up the phone prior to updating the firmware.
Letters typed, whether in text messages, contact information, the search bar... do not show up. The cursor moves and the letters are "there", but on the screen it is still empty. I do get numbers in the keypad when dialing. Upon restoring the phone at one point, the letters started showing up, then after opening safari, they disappeared, which brings me to my next issue...
Safari and other internet browsers, they all seem to load a page, but the only thing you see is a black screen and a black scroll bar where the web page should load. I have tried two other browsers and met with the same result.
I have attempted to restore the phone on two separate computers multiple times. I deleted all back ups, redownloaded the update to make sure that nothing was corrupt, reinstalled itunes twice and hard reset the phone as well multiple times.
Still, there are no letters showing up and the browser screens remain black.
Is anyone else dealing with this issue? Any constructive advice or solving techniques would be very helpful. Being my first iphone, please be patient if I do not understand exactly what you are saying.

Yeah! Problem solved: It's a QT issue.
Cause: Mac Update Software downloaded a faulty QT.
Solution: Download QT from Apple's QT site.
Great to have the Video back

  • Trouble when typing and scrolling on Curve 9300

My girlfriend had a bb curve 9300 and has an issue when she types text and scrolls through the menus. When typing txt the phone will produce random foreign characters (the language is definetly set to english) and the cursor will move randomly throught the txt so she can't construct sentences as it will sometimes start typing within another word. Also when she's scrolling through the menus the cursor will move all over the screen and not in order. E.g when she scrolls down it will jump to an icon sometimes on the other side of the screen. Her phone provider has washed their hands of it saying its out of warranty but they sent it away anyway and it came back saying its water damaged, impossible as its always in a case and never out of her sight, and wasn't worth their while fixing it. I sent it off through my bank insurance and its come back today allegedly 'fixed' however within half an hour its doing it again. Any suggestions apart from giving her my bold when I get my new one when I upgrade next week?

In order to use your 9300 you will need to have a specific BlackBerry BIS data plan. Without it your device will not work as expected.

  • Macbook Pro switches order of letters when typing fast

Attention: If you seem to make more mistakes when typing on a macbook pro, it's probably not your fault. Letters get switched around.
This is a problem that has been exhibited in macbook pros as early as 2007 and still apparent today. I could never prove for sure it wasn't me making the mistakes, but today I came up with a consistent test case to prove I'm right. Right now using macbook pro retina display. I noticed this today when every time I typed the word "front" it would come out wrong and I'd have to correct it.
    How to reproduce:
-In an extremely swift, rolling motion (lasting no more than a tenth of a second), type the letters "fron". The left index finger goes on the f, the left middle finger goes on the r, the right ring finger goes on the o, and the right index finger goes on the n. Since all the fingers are different, it is easy to type the 4 letters extremely fast. You might notice that conventionally the left index finger is supposed to type the letter "r", but people who are good at typing always subconsciously make small adjustments to fingering which improve typing speed/efficiency, so this is a common practice. In this case, I always automatically use my left middle finger for the r in "front" without even thinking, because optimization of typing speed has become second-nature to me, just like you would type "lol" with two fingers rather than cumbersomely all 3 letters with the right ring finger.
-The fingers should all stay on the keys and keep them depressed throughout this 1/10 of a second typing motion; this is very common in fast typing and has never been an issue in other computers (it would be ludicrous to expect fast typers to meticulously lift their finger up after every letter and make sure there were never 2 keys depressed simultaneously. If there is ever any overlap between keys being pressed, the key that was pressed first should appear first on the screen, not randomly jumbled order)
-You will notice that even though your fingers landed in the order of "fron", what comes out is usually "fnor" or may even be missing some letters.
-This is reproducible while typing inside any application

That is normal. You have to keep objects that have magnets out pf the palm rest area of the computer.
    From Apple:
Macbook Pro goes to sleep when stacked.
“Placing a device that contains a magnet (such as an iPhone) under your computer or on its palm rests can cause the computer to sleep unexpectedly. This can also appear to cause the computer to have difficulties starting up”.

  • Why the user experience on Bluetooth keyboard of iPad is different on keyboard of MacBook, especially when typing Chinese characters?

I am a Chinese in Taiwan, and I use a input method call "Changjei" (倉頡) to input chinese character. And thank for  "Yahoo Kimo Input Method" found in Macbook Pro, so that I can use this method  as same as typing in Windows PC. When I use bluetooth keyboard connect to iPad mini, it has "Changjei" input method also, but the user experience is different than typing in MacBook Pro! I often type the wrong word when typing in iPad, because some words need additional space key to avoid selection ( when selection appear usually need additional number key for selection ). Usually every chinese character only need one space key for confirm, and in iPad, some Chinese characters need two space key(this will cause problem), and others need one as usual. It slow me down greatly, and is not a smoothly and freely experience when expressing my idea by typing in iPad, and I often distract by these misleading situation when typing.

  • Latency when typing and scrolling

When I type (mostly office mac) a word I might type the first letter, then wait 3 or 4 seconds for the rest of the word to appear. This happens at random. It usually doesnt happen right away but only after I have been working for a while and applying other functions like attributes and saving the work. Also when I use the scroll wheel on my mouse or even try to grab the scroll bar there is a hesitation before scrolling takes place. Even with all other programs closed this happens. It happens in all programs to a certain extent, but at random. This has been a problem since the day I purchased the computer almost two years ago. I had the logic board replaced a couple of months ago which fixed some other filing problems, but did not fix the typing and scrolling problem. So last month I took the machine back to complain about the typing latency. They couldn't find anything wrong with the computer anywhere! Well, that's just great! I don't think they gave it enough time. My Apple protect plan runs out this october, I think, so I need to address this as soon as possible. Any suggestions?
    imac Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It does not happen during the first, maybe half hour to an hour. I did take it in to demonstrate to the genius bar but it didn't act up I guess because it wasn't on long enough. This phenomenon, once it starts becomes epidemic and can effect any or all programs including macromedia MX; like draw a simple circle and wait 15 to 30 seconds for it to generate an image. The scrolling and mouse clicking are both radically affected at this point. The last time I can remember problems like this, I owned a MacPlus running sys 6 which had a bad power supply. I replaced the power supply, and it ran great for about a week, then reverted back to the same situation, and eventually a sad-mac. On my end the only thing I could try is to replace the memory, but that will cost me a few bucks. I'd like to ask apple to come over to my place when this happens so I can prove it to them. Maybe that's wishful thinking. I hope I don't have to give up my mac because of this, but It sure looks like it at this time.

  • What causes a delay in when typing and switching between apps?

Recently, my iPad 2 seems to hesitate when moving to different home pages and when typing. I also find there is often a gap between when I use a touch command and when the command initiates. Could this be due to a lack of memory?

    Try reset all settings
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
Note: Data will not be affected but settings for Wi-Fi, FaceTime, Message, Home Sharing, Wall Paper, Sound etc will be reset

  • [solved] Lags in chromium when typing and scrolling

    Hello,
I experience annoying lags in chromium when typing (especially in gmail) or scrolling (but only with arrow keys. Using the mouse scrolls smoothly). I doubt my machine is to slow to for running Chromium smoothly as it is an Thinkpad X200.
I already cleaned the profile folder with profile-cleaner but this did not improve the performance.
How can I trace back the issue?

Extensions?  Any other info/configuration we shoudl know about here?
Good point! Indeed the lags were caused by an extension called Recent Tabs. Yet I did not think of an extension issue before since I use the same extension on Windows where it never had caused any issues.
Thus I will mark the thread as solved.

  • Process Order tables and Production System Performance

    Hi All,
What are the different tables of Process order? Also how do i know which table affects the system performance of Production system and to what extent if Change Logging is made active ?
The issue is in our clients place we would like to set the Change Logging ( Records changes made for any transaction )  for Process orders and we would like to know to which tables change logging should be made active so that Production system performance is not affected.
    Please help me regarding this.
    Thanks in Advance,

All the changes done in any transaction are saved in CDPOS table.
when there is any report developed based on this table then the performance will be very slow.
