Keyboard Recommendation

Hi,
Can someone recommend a good keyboard for my Power PC G5? I read somewhere that Apple's new keyboard only works with the Intel chip.

Also another keyboard to look at is Kensington's 64366 SlimType Standard Keyboard.
My first Apple keyboard lasted 5 years before the keys started to stick. So a little over a year ago I purchased a new Apple keyboard and the keys are already sticking. They don't make keyboards like they used to! So I was looking for an alternative keyboard and a friend of mine has the Kensington Slim Type for Mac. I tried it out and really liked it a lot .
The feel of the keys has just the right about of resistance with a short travel and are very quiet.
Only minor negative for some people: the keyboard does not have additional usb ports, which at first I thought was going to be an issue with my wireless mouse and trans/receiver. But as it turns out the wireless trans/receiver has a a four foot cable which easily reached the back of my Mac. Also my monitor has 4 USB ports
Over at Amazon.com the keyboard is selling for $10.84 after rebate. As mentioned my year old Apple Keyboard is/was already sticking. Unless Apple improves it's keyboard quality and durability I'm not going to buy another $40.00+ Apple keyboard.

  • Alternative USB Keyboard - Recommendations?

Don't like these aluminium keyboards, and looking for a good USB one to use instead.
Something with substantial keys and a good positive action, like these
    http://arstechnica.com/reviews/4q00/g4cube_cd/images/keyboard-big.jpg
    The two requirements are
    a) must have a USB in, rather than a permanently-attached cable
    b) must have a USB out, for a wired mouse
    Any recommendations?

  • Looking for a starter keyboard recommendation for use with Garageband

I've got a new iMac running Lion.  I'm looking for a keyboard that will work with Garageband that I can buy for as little as possible but will work and be decent.  Looking at the Apple Store, I see three that could fit in my price range, the M-Audio Keystation Mini 32, the M-Audio Key Studio 49 USB-Midi, and the Akai Professional LPK25 Laptop. I'd appreciate any feedback about these.

    Good, good, and good!
M-Audio in particular makes great "bang for the buck" controllers.
If you spend more, you get a better physical keyboard, which can be more satisfying to play. But for budget models, hard to beat those, particularly the m-audio.

  • Iphone - portable keyboard recommendations

Is there any kind of dockable portable keyboard or wireless keyboard you can use with your iphone? Wouldn't a bluetooth keyboard for mac's work with it? I want to have a portable keyboard so when I am working remotely, if I want to text or send emails I can use a keyboard and not the touch screen. I don't dock my work computer with my iphone so I need the keyboard solely for my iphone device.
If there is nothing someone needs to get on that.

    I agree Anastasia.
I'm just about to ditch my ageing pocket PC, dodgy Telstra mobile phone and ancient iPod and replace them with an iPhone. But I'm very disappointed that there's no equivalent of the portable keyboard I use with my pocket PC - nor, it seems, any prospect of one being developed any time soon. I'm sure there are still quite a few of us who like to touch type.

  • Portable small input-only Perkins-type keyboard recommendations?

Iʻm looking for affordable options for Perkins-type keyboards.
A TACTILE keyboard, and USB (instead of Bluetooth) is preferred.
Itʻs good if the keyboard can be programmed and learn about my Braille needs so it can work with different Braille-language inputs, maths/Nemeth learning, musical notation etc.
What options would work for Braille-input currently?
Regular Perkins-type input devices can be really expensive, so Iʻm open for all other alternatives.
    Would Xkeys XK-24 work?
I would love if I could learn to program it so that I could e.g. get the text to flash on the screen in closed captioning style in giant Braille as I type (or switch between that and VoiceOver or other methods of feedback of what I type).
I use VoiceOver to some extent on all my Macs and iOS devices. BrailleTouch works pretty well on iPhone for me, but I need to expand the Braille input options.
So MBraille on iOS is probably next for iPad, but... well, those are all software. I need tactile keys so I can learn to type in Braille to my muscle memory.

Updates... since this might help other users too.
Iʻve got Braille Writer Student software installed on my Mac now. It works for basic learning to map the keys to the letters.
    And it does exactly [s d f = 3 2 1] on left and [j k l = 4 5 6] for right hand.
Iʻll need to practice with that typing method, BUT itʻs very hard on hands. Try typing even 10 minutes in a row when all the keys you hit are s d f j k l and pressing 1-6 of them on the same time, and without really moving your fingers on the keyboard.
What would be more comfortable for me would be just a small little USB thing where the keys are always the same.
On iPad mini I use Visual Brailler; it has the classic Perkins key layout - which I basically want to use. But itʻll be easier when i can have specific keys on the keyboard so i can get a consistent input. With software, either itʻs "looking at the keys" or typing "in blind". Well... both are something I canʻt do, so on the software solutions for that problem, itʻs VoiceOver time.
And a basic Perkins will be the ideal.
XK-24 can be programmed on both OS X side, and if Iʻll use it (which Iʻll have to at some point) with a Windows virtual machine, because itʻs USB, the device can be passed in full to the guest operating system. And finding some way to make it work systemwide or in a specific program in a Windows virtual machine will not be a problem.

  • Wireless keyboard options?

Does anyone know if its possible to use a non-apple wireless keyboard on a Mac Pro? I don't like the aluminum keys of the apple keyboards and am looking to switch, but am concerned that it will impact other program functionality that uses the some of the apple specific keys.
If it is possible to switch, does anyone have any wireless keyboard recommendations?

Pretty much any of the Logitech wireless keyboards work with the Mac. There are some RF ones that use a USB port and they are quite nice, and have a more proper 'keyboard' feel than the newer ones that come with the latest Macs. I know quite a few people that just don't like the 'chiclet' keyboards now..
I plan on picking up one of these in a week or so to go with a Mac Mini. The gent at the local Apple store I shop at has one and so far had no complaints.

And here's a download page direct from Apple for the software..

    Good luck!

  • Keyboard Latency?

    Hi all,
We're considering a keyboard (Christmas is almost here!) for the kids, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what sort of latency I could expect in GB2 with either a USB keyboard like the M-Audios or a Yamaha keyboard with midi out to a USB midi interface. We've got an 800MhZ flat-panel iMac, 768 mb of ram, the hard drive is upgraded to 7200 rpm. In Musical Typing, quickly typing a bunch of keys results in GB playing the sounds noticeably behind, which I took as a bad sign, but I have no idea if a midi connection would be different. This imac just has USB 1.1, and we won't be springing for a firewire connection unless one of the kids turns out to be an undiscovered savant. I greatly appreciate any help/personal experience with this issue, including keyboard recommendations (between 200-300 dollars)!

    Okay, two situations:
    1) USB keyboard going into the Mac.
    2) Conventional MIDI keyboard with MIDI Out cable going to USB MIDI interface going into the Mac.
In both situations, there will be zero latency of MIDI data going into the Mac.
If you experience any latency between striking a key and hearing a note, the latency is coming from the Mac, not the keyboard. The Mac has to receive the incoming MIDI data and then generate sounds and play them back.
Now, with your system and GarageBand 2 as the sound source, you should not encounter perceptible latency.
But my point is that any latency comes from the computer processing, not from the keyboard, in either case.

  • Want to play Power PC game on Intel-based Mac

First off, I'm sorry if this post is in an inappropriate category but I didn't know where to put it. My OS is Tiger if that's useful.
I want to play the game Black & White on my Intel-based Macbook. The game is only supported on PowerPC-based Macs. Is there any possibility of playing this game? If there is a solution, does it work well or is it really buggy, i.e. not worth it?
    Thanks for any help!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions....
I'm afraid with the system requirements for the game being.....
    System Requirements
    Minimum (Macintosh)
    Mac OS 8.6/Mac OS 10.1.3
    PowerPC G3 333 MHz
128 MB RAM (with virtual memory set to at least 256MB)
Hardware accelerated 3D Graphics Card with 8MB VRAM
    500MB free hard disk space
    Mouse and keyboard
    Recommended (Macintosh)
Mac OS 9.2.2/Mac OS 10.2 or later
    PowerPC G3 500 MHz
    256MB RAM
Hardware accelerated 3D Graphics Card with 32MB VRAM
    1GB free hard disk space
that it can't run on an Intel Mac. In fact, the Mac OS 9.2 is Classic... that goes back a bit. But if you can find a friend who's running a powerPC Mac with Tiger running Classic, you could run the game that way. In fact, if the game is that important to you, you might be able to pick up an older iBookG4 with at least (Tiger) 10.4.x with Classic. You'd need the support disks that came with the iBook. There is no way it will run on the MacBook... sorry. The 8.6 system goes back to about 1998. It looks like the minimum requirements say 10.2 would work also, that was Jaguar. That would work also without having to run Classic.

  • Crash and boot up problem......can I fix self?  Suggestions?

Working on some excel documents and my main monitor goes nuts then blank.
My second monitor is noisy and the desktop is shifted...center is an edge sides flipped.
Power it down by holding power button .....nothing else worked.
Now when I power up initially I get a gray screen with three green vertical bars , one on each end one in middle....or maybe 4 of them.
I get the Mac icon and little cog...it then goes to a gray screen and finally "white"
I tried holding every combination of keys down(wireless keyboard) recommended in searches I made.....nothing works
Three hours of trying all these things......
    Any suggestions?
    Put install disc in......nothing....

I know you said you've tried every combination of start up short cuts but would you mind lisiting what you've tried?
These are two things I would suggest if you haven't already
    Reset NVRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Looking for recommendations for a keyboard/stand for the iPad

I have the bluetooth stand alone one for Apple TV but my wife wants a keyboard/stand combined and wants tro know where the mouse would be?
I know Logitech and Zagg both do the keyboard but what about the mouse?
    All recommendations welcomed

I use the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard, and I love it.  The iPad easily attaches and detaches.  The Keyboard acts as a cover in one configuration, move the iPad to the slot and it is a nice stand.  It is firm enough in the slot that you can use the back of the keyboard (behind the slot) as a handle to view the iPad vertically.  Or you can easily use the iPad on its own.  Magnets help to reseat the iPad when you are ready to reattach it.
The keyboard action is quite nice as well.
The version for the iPad Air doesn't close as well as the previous versions - not sure why.  I almost didn't buy it because of this.  But I am very glad that I did buy it, and in reality with a little care it isn't a problem.

  • I recommend that Apple develop an iPhone with a qwerty keyboard .They would gain a major market share.

A physical keyboard on an iPhone would overtake a huge marketshare.

  • Keyboard app recommendation

The standard Android keyboards don't do non-Roman languages, which I need for some of my work, so I've looked into keyboard apps in Google Play. For several months I used GO Keyboard, which is quite good; but recently it began pushing a large number of ads (see this thread). I went looking again, and found Smart Keyboard, which has a free trial (fully functional, nag screen, but no ads) and an ad-free, nag-free paid version ($2.65 as of this date). Here's a short review for those who may be interested:
Smart Keyboard is highly customizable, with many options for appearance and functionality, including layout (normal, T9, compact); transparency; adding or removing a domain key (.com, etc.), mic key, and others; resizing keys; skins; etc. The multilingual functions are easy to use and customize. Two of my favorite features: (1) You can use text prediction/autotext and non-Roman keyboards on a physical keyboard if your phone is so equipped (switching languages with Shift+Space). (2) Long-pressing a key on the virtual keyboard inserts the alt character, e.g., long-pressing a inserts @, d inserts $; this saves a lot of switching to the symbol keyboard! There are a couple of things that could be improved: (1) add a key to take the virtual keyboard off the screen; (2) the Hebrew keyboard layout is very odd, unlike any I've ever seen, nonintuitive and hard to get used to. Overall, though, I recommend it very highly. If you can deal with the buy-me nag screens on occasion, the trial version works great. I think it's well worth the $2.65, though, especially if you have professional needs for non-Roman languages.

Now that IOS 8 allows for this sort of application to be done. Anybody hear of an app that could do the mentioned?

  • Recommendations for keyboard for Mini

I want like to know what brand and inexpensive bluetooth keyboard with 10key would be recommended for my 2011 Mac Mini.

I have this problem as well, using an ipad mini retina with a Zagg Folio keyboard.
However, it only occurs when the ipad falls asleep by itself.
If I close the lid of the keyboard, thus causing the ipad to fall asleep, then open the lid, then push a few keys: the bluetooth connection is back up.
So a 'workaround'  for me at least is to always close the lid when I stop typing for a while.
I'm using the ipad mini retina with IOS 8.02,   so this problem hasn't been fixed yet.
