Keyboard repeat rate too slow

Hi.
For some reason I'm unable to increase the keyboard repeat rate in Windows XP. The slider in Control Panel / Keyboard is set to the maximum, but the rate is still too slow for my taste. I've never had a problem with this setting in Windows before, so I suspect it's either a problem with the Boot Camp drivers, or some other Apple hardware related issue.
I've also tried to bypass the Control Panel and set the repeat rate through the registry. The value in HKEYCURRENTUSER/Control Panel/Keyboard/KeyboardSpeed is 31 when the Control Panel slider is at the maximum setting. Other sites have suggested that the unit of this value is "characters per second", and that it could be increased to at least 80. Unfortunately this does nothing for me, even after rebooting. Also, the current max. rate is more like 20 characters per second (which is not fast at all); I can decrease it - using the Control Panel or the registry editor - but it won't go any higher that 20/s (by my measurements).
I'm using a Mac Pro with Boot Camp and rEFIt (Leopard 10.5.1, Windows XP SP2, and Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy). Keyboard is the new aluminum Apple keyboard, but I've plugged in my old Logitech keyboard too, same result.
Any ideas?

Hi, Warren -
If you have a reasonable size computer store (not an Apple one) not too far away, it may be worthwhile to visit it so she can sample the feel of various brands of keyboards.
One thing to consider is that the keyboard should be compatible with Mac keyboard startup commands - not all are.
I like the Macally iMediaKey keyboards - their layout is not as condensed as the newer Apple keyboards, and I like the action of the keys. In particular, I also like the fact that the keyboard has a functional power key, and extra programmable keys along the top - they're very handy for starting up commonly used programs without having to consume Fkeys.

  • My keyboard repeat is very slow, regardless of the System Preferences

I've tried playing with the System Preferences, but the keyboard repeat and delay stay slow and long regardless of the sliders.

    Thanks,

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Setting keyboard repeat rates on hotplug

When I plug in a USB keyboard, the repeat rates are initially set to the defaults contrary to the XFCE4 settings.  To apply the settings that should be there, I have to move one of the sliders a little bit and move it back.  Is there a way I can make the keyboard settings apply to hotplugged keyboards?

Hm, perhaps I could write a small script for my user that reads my settings and applies them like this.  Seems like something XFCE4 should be taking care of.

  • Transfer rate too slow

    hi guys!!!
    just wondering though...
    1) just recently i noticed that transfer rate from my external hard drive to my MBP gets slower.., transferring a 150MB would take like 10mins..so im just wondering what could be done to resolve this issue...
    2) and how can i uninstall program.. ( i installed the parallel and eventually installed windows XP on it, in order for me to run some window based application, furthermore, since i dont need it anymore,,, i just dragged the parallel application to the trash). is that all....what about the windows OS that has been installed together with the parallel, is it also deleted???
    3) how can i increase the memory speed of my MBP?
    thanks in advance guys

well it is probably because you drive is formatted in ntfs if that's the case the transfer speed is not that sexy I must admit ..try using a drive with journalled mac format and see the difference
for parallels yes the windows is gone but i recommend using clean my mac application fro getting rid of leftovers and for future installs
you can expand your memory by adding more ram or you can actually speed it up buy adding lower latenyc hyperx memory modules from kingston altho the difference won't be THAT much

  • Scan rate too slow for I/O buses

    Hello,
Could somebody please explain what the attached message means and how I can overcome it
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for the answer. I apologize for not attaching the
image the first time. My hardware is cRIO 9014 with a 9104 chassis and modules
AO, DO, DI and AI and I am using LabVIEW 8.6.1. The concept is to control a
unit either by a touch panel (TPC 2106T) or by my PC. For this reason, I created
a project containing the cRIO controller, the touch panel and two
different vis (for now I leave the Touch panel out of the game, I mentioned it
just because is included in the project), one under the CRIO controller and one
on the PC. I also made a Library containing shared variables to obtain
communication between cRIO and PC (what I am planning to do in the future is to
set the RT vi as start up vi (in order to run always) and controlling the unit
either by the PCvi or by the touch panel vi. What I want to do now is running
the 2 vis (RTvi and PCvi) simultaneously. For the RTvi I used a timed loop with
the synchronized to scan engine selected in the input node. For the PC vi I use
a while loop with a time delay. When I am trying to deploy the RTvi I receive
the message sent in my previous post. The scan engine settings are: scan period
100sec and network publishing period 100ms. I hope that my explanation is clear
now. Please let me know if you need further information.
    Thanks in advance

  • [SOLVED] Keyboard repeat messed up after update to Xorg 1.6

Did anyone else notice the keyboard repeat rate and delay changed after the update to Xorg 1.6? It takes longer to start repeating and the rate is lower (at least in a terminal). This happens both in xmonad (started through xinit) and KDE (started through gdm).
xset q has the same output in both xorg 1.5.3 and 1.6:
auto repeat delay: 660 repeat rate: 25
The weird thing is, I don't think this is the true delay and repeat rate in effect when using xorg 1.5.3 -- it reacts much faster than that.
After the update to xorg 1.6, I started KDE (though I seldom use it) and played around with the keyboard settings in the 'SystemSettings' control panel. I guess the delay closest to the old one is about 300.
Does anyone know how to get the old settings back? I had to downgrade to 1.5.3, since this drives me nuts.
EDIT: Doing xset 250 25 helps a bit, but doesn't feel quite right.
EDIT2: Might be related to this http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=67759

Explicitly define your keyboard in xorg.conf and don't use evdev but kbd.
You just need to add to Section "ServerLayout"
    InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
    And add the section
    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Keyboard0"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "CoreKeyboard"
    EndSection
Maybe one of those CoreKeyboard definitions is redundant.
For that I'd have to also add Option "AutoAddDevices" "off" to ServerLayout.
That's not really the problem, I was using evdev with xorg 1.5.3 and everything was fine. What I'd like to know is, what was the default delay and repeat rate in xorg 1.5.3, so I can set it in xorg 1.6.0 (with xset or something).
    Thanks for your suggestion, though.

  • TP Yoga 15 - Windows: Keyboard response too slow after coming back from hibernation

I've got the same issue as outlined in this thread for a Y50 - there seems to be a BIOS update to solve it, but what about TP Yoga 15? Quote:Simply put, In keyboard properties , the Repeat delay is default at maximum (eg, holding down a keyboard button and how fast it generates the key strokes). When the system is put in hiberanation, then turned on again to come back, the Repeat delay some how gets decreased to about 2/3 of what it originally is. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Re-Y50-Windows-8-Keyboard-response-too-slow-after-coming-back/td-p/1676309/page/1

  • Disk too slow error when using M-Audio Oxygen 49 keyboard

I bought the M-Audio Oxygen 49 keyboard. And when I plug it into my MacBook Pro to do some playing, the project will record for maybe a minute but then I get a 'disk too slow' error and the recording stops. This happens every single time, no matter if there's 30 tracks or 1 track on the recording. I know that it is the keyboard causing the error because I am currently working on a 59 track piece that has effects on almost every track and my setup doesn't even blink. (well it'll pinwheel for a second when I hit record sometimes, but the CPU and disk meters don't ever get near red-line levels).
What on earth is causing this stupid keyboard to cause this problem, and how do I fix it? It's clearly the keyboard. When I unplug it and record a live track on a project that just gave me the 'disk too slow' error, everything works just fine!
    Grr...
    Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Edit: I have the MBP plugged via firewire into an Echo Audiofire and then into a WD hard dtive (at 7200 RPM). The keyboard is USB into the MBP.

    hi
i spoke with Apple pro application support staff who confirmed that the Tascam 1884 patch for 10.4.10 is the cause of the problem. The apple boot drive can reliably record 1 channel of audio under normal circumstances. Apple staff described the situation as "unfortunate" and recommended to wait for Tascam to release 10.4.10 compatible drivers.
For anyone interested in the technical background, the Tascam 10.4.10 patch DOWNGRADES the audioFW component (messing with kernel headers etc.). This compromises the OS's ability to correctly communicate with FW devices.
I had tried recording to a firewire 800 drive, but all FW IO is affected by the 10.4.10 Tascam patch: Logic simply didn't record anything to disk when I tried this, and the machine became unresponseive. I do not recommend anyone attempt recording to a FW drive with the Tascam drivers installed.
I have recorded circa 400 hours of single channel 96K 24bit audio to my internal Macbook Pro boot drive using the same software/configuration under 10.4.9 without a single glitch. I do recognise that when requiring heavy disk IO it is not advisable to record to the boot drive. However, 1 channel of audio can be reliably recorded if the system is well maintained.
Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.

  • Repeated Error: Disk is too slow. (Record) (-10005)

    Hello brilliant forum users,
I'm using a brand new mac mini with all of the software updated. It's got 2GB of RAM.
I am recording spoken word through a mixer, onto one track (male basic).
    There are no other tracks.
I have no other applications open, and the computer has had a fresh boot.
I am getting this error repeatedly, intermittently, with no apparent cause:
    Disk is too slow. (Record)
    (-10005)
After googling and reading up, I have done the following:
Made sure FileVault is off (it was).
Turned off time machine (I had it on).
In the energy saver preference, deselected 'put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible'.
    Still, the error occurred.
Then, I decided to record to my 500GB external (backup) drive, which is connected via usb (I do not have a firewire external drive). I thought, surely this will fix the problem. I made sure time machine was disabled.
    Still, the error occurred.
It is totally random, happens at 2 minutes, 20 minutes, or not at all.
I have recording audio resolution set at 'good'.
I am recording via an audio-in (3.5mm I think?) aux cable from an OUT on the mixer.
It seems that I should call apple, but I am at a meditation center in Thailand, and the time difference makes it difficult, not to mention that the computer is in the meditation hall, which makes phone calls difficult.
So, I turn to the trusted experience of YOU!
    Thank you very much!
    Most appreciatively,
    Lizzy

I have also been getting this one intermittently while playing back - sometimes while playing back only one track. Don't know if it's related.
Part of the project was not played
This project has too many real instrument tracks to be played in real-time.
To optimize performance, see the 'Optimizing GarageBand performance' page in GB Help.
hmmm.. that doesn't sound right - and may suggest a software issue.
Have you tried creating a new user account (go to System Preferences, Accounts, and add another account with the "+" sign) and using Garageband from a new account?
Or if that's not working, do a complete uninstall of Garageband...
    • trash GB receipts (at the hard drive level)
    • trash your Caches folder (at the user level)
    • trash all GB preferences (at the user level)
    • trash the GB application
... then reinstall Garageband from scratch?
    Hope this is helpful!

  • Re: Y50 Windows 8 : Keyboard response too slow after coming back from hibernation

    I also have this problem.
    Lenovo Part #: 59421845
    Model: 20378
    Purchase from: Replacement/Exchange from Lenovo
I wish I saw this thread before I did a factory restore. Ohh well, atleast its somewhat comforting to know I'm not the only one having this issue. I initially blamed the problem on my Razer Orochi 2013, but turns out that wasn't the issue.
And I agree a proper fix is needed, wether is be some kind of BIOS or Driver update, but not some 3rd Party work around. For a $1,200+ laptop, this shouldn't be something that just get's swept under the carpet with a "temporary fix".
Please keep us up to date on the status of this issue Lenovo.
EDIT: Using this post as the first in the thread for escalation purposes - Amy_Lenovo

When I put the Y50 to sleep or hibernate and then wake it, the keyboard refresh rate defaults to incredibly slow speeds.  So when I hit and hold backspace, it only removes 3 characters a second as opposed to 15-20 per second like I desire.  The only solutions are to reoboot or go into keyboard settings in the control panel and save the settings again.  The settings don't actually change, so just opening the settings and hitting apply is good enough to fix it.  This is obviosuly a software bug and others on online forums are experiencing the same issue.  If anybody else is experiencing this bug, please post here so Lenovo might take action to correct it faster.  Lenovo, if you're listening, please offer us a solution.
