Keyboard scratches Screen and Reinstall OSX takes 8 hours

Only 2 months ago I bought a macbookpro. I was all excited, my first mac.
2 months later...
I had bought a case for it to protect it.
I carry it in my backpack in a separate sleeve designed to not allow pressure on the device when carried in the backpack.
The keyboard has completely scratched the screen...Thats PANTS!!!
Also I installed java update and it completely rendered the java unusable and thus had to reinstall the whole OS...I need java because I am in a java programing class.
To reinstall the OS it took over 8 hours..watching a little loader circle (throbber) go around and around over and over...I know this is not normal to take 8 hours to reinstall an OS...
I called apple support and they wont do anything...
Still no satisfaction and the thing runs slow as ****... Keep in mind that I am a computer technician of over 10 years... I have checked the system and cannot find any problems barring it being a hard drive issue which tests okay.
Any ideas...
thanks

I am trying to understand your basic problems that you are reporting.
Only 2 months ago I bought a macbookpro
2 months later...
I had bought a case for it to protect it.
The keyboard has completely scratched the screen
So, does that mean that the scratched screen issue happened "all at once"? 2 months ago to 2 months later sounds like you are talking about "today" or thereabouts.
I carry it in my backpack in a separate sleeve designed to not allow pressure on the device when carried in the backpack.
What does "it" refer to?
1) The MBP
2) The case that you purchased "2 months later"
3) The MBP in the case that you purchased "2 months later"
Or is the backpack the case that you purchased "2 months later"?
Also I installed java update and it completely rendered the java unusable and thus had to reinstall the whole OS
Ok, so live learn and perhaps next time read first read "Java Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for developers" (http://developer.apple.com/java/faq/#remove), where your issue is clearly explained and likely could have been avoided.
How can I switch between multiple versions of Java on my Mac?
The Java Preferences application allows users to choose which version is used by applications, Applets, and command-line tools. Apple developer tools such as Jar Bundler and Xcode both allow you to request a minimum or specific Java version for double-clickable applications. Please see the Java 1.4 Info.plist Dictionary Keys documentation for details.
Can I remove a Java update after I've installed it?
Java on Mac OS X is updated incrementally through numerous releases. Therefore, the only way to revert to an earlier Java installation is to reinstall the operating system. The same applies for any other Java-related Software Updates or Developer Previews. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that Developer Previews of Java on Mac OS X be installed on non-critical systems.
Sometimes a little research goes a long way.
Yes I am a computer technician....
I know you are. That is why I stated:
How about:
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Installation and Setup Guide
(http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Snow_Leopard_InstallationInstructions.pdf)
I didn't want to mince words with a fellow as savvy and experienced as you, just trying to provide a link to a document. I understand your are frustrated; it might help to sublimate some of that energy into a focused dialogue. Apparently you are in school (java programing class / backpack), so it is also good time to put on the "big-boy pants" and the "thinking hat".

  • My 2009 MacBook Pro keeps restarting even after I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled OSX.

About a month ago, my laptop started to randomly turn off: I would be using either Chrome, Photoshop (the free CS2 version available from Adobe's website) or Powerpoint, and the screen would go blank. I would then have to hold the power button for a while until the little light at the front of the computer would flicker and it would restart. I brought it to the Mac Store where they tested it and said it looked fine. They suggested I erase my hard drive and reinstall OSX as a precaution.
Fast forward a month, I have been very busy with work and hadn't been able to fix this problem. It wasn't that bad, only once every couple of days, sometimes more, sometimes less, I could work despite this problem.
Then, I installed OSX Mavericks. The installation started in the morning, but, like an idiot, I paused it to go to work. Later on, I completed the installation, it looked fine, but then all day long my laptop would suddenly restart and go to a grey screen that said in multiple languages "Your laptop restarted because of a problem, press any button to continue the restart." A computer technician friend of mine checked it out and said it was probably due to the badly installed OSX and suggested that I erase my hard drive and reinstall OSX.
I backed up all my files, erased the hard drive and reinstalled OSX. Everything looked fine.
    Then it happened again.
Any ideas of why this is happening?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Problem in Downloading and Reinstalling OSX Lion via recovery HD

I am using MBP 13 inch late 2011. I have erased my Macintosh HD. Now trying to reinstall OSx 10.7 using Recovery HD. Mac is perfectly connected to Wifi, as soon as i click "Continue" to reinstall the Mac OsX 10.7, it shows me this message "To Download and Restore Mac OSx, your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple."
I clicked "Continue"... But after few seconds of loading it showed me message "Could not fing Installation Information for this machine-Contact Apple Care"
    Why is it so???
My mac is only 9 months old... And Im in Pakistan.
Need help or suggestion. How can I download and reinstall OSx again..
    Thanks

You will need to contact AppleCare about this issue as we are just users to users here and can't authorize a account/download of OS X.

  • Cannot erase and reinstall osx

I am attempting to erase and reinstall osx 10.8.5 on my imac with no success.  I have tried booting up with command option R and using disk utilities.   The problem is that the erase or the partition functions are greyed out. Any suggestions?

  • MAJOR HD PROBLEMS..disc cant be deactivated,  trying to reformat and reinstall osx

As the title mentions, I cant seem to partition my HD in order to properly reformat and then reinstall osx..
I basically want a fresh new factory macbook with the original lion osx (dec 2011 macbook)..
Reasons why its not working out:
Macbook when turned on goes automatically in the options menu with reinstall os, DU, seek help online and set back a time machine backup (dont have)..
Already erased my hitachi 500 gb HD and the Macintosh HD partition a couple of times (on fastest way setting, and once in the 3 times overwrite setting which took 4 hours, not tried the safest 7 times overwrite way..)
Did a control disk with DU sometimes its fine and sometimes an error pops up saying it cant be fixed.
After trying to reinstall an os mavericks in this case, after 4 hours or 3andahalf it restarts itself in the same options menu (DU, reinstall, seek online help, time machine)..
Partitioning again wont work because the disk cant be deactivated. .
    What to do guys? ?

In order to repartition the drive, you can't be using it as any kind of boot drive. That includes Recovery Mode since that is a hidden partition on the drive. So the OS won't let you remove the drive its currently started up to out from under yourself.
Restart in Internet Recovery Mode by holding down Command+Option+R so the Mac is running from the firmware. You'll get what looks like the same work screen as the regular Recovery Mode, but you'll be able to repartition and completely wipe the drive. Then install OS X. The version of OS X the Mac shipped with will be installed.
Do not upgrade it to any version of OS X past that, or the new owner will not be able to reinstall any upgrade since it would require your App Store ID and password to do so.
Already erased my hitachi 500 gb HD and the Macintosh HD partition a couple of times (on fastest way setting, and once in the 3 times overwrite setting which took 4 hours, not tried the safest 7 times overwrite way..)
For future reference, unless you're trying to protect classified government documents, or other highly sensitive data, there's no reason to do any more than a one pass erase. It takes expensive, specialized hardware and software to have even a slight chance of recovering data that has been written over even just once. There's no software consumers can buy that will recover anything from such a drive.

  • Wiping hardraive and reinstalling osx from disk

So.. I know there's a few of these threads around, but I can't find one that answers my problem directly...
I've tried to wipe my harddisk and reinstal my os (snow leopard) from the install disk that i got with my macbook pro when i bought it. I manually backed up, started up holnd cmd-R and wiped the harddisk from disk utility. Then tried to run the instal software and when you get to the select a disk to install on screen, i have only one option (my single inbuilt harddrive), however it says that i can't select that hardrive, doesn't offer an explantion why.. Any ideas?
One thought i had was that it might be due to the fact maveric is still on that drive? It's not installed but i can still install from it if i want and i can see it in disk utility, though i don't seem to be able to anything to it there. Do i need to delete it some how before snow leopard will install? If so, how? Obviously i need to be fairly sure that'll work or else i'll end up with no os at all...
Thanks in advance, let me know if i've left out any crutial info..

is an article describing the process. It's not that hard, IMHO. If you've never done it before, plan on maybe an hour. A magnetic tipped phillips screwdriver will be the most important tool, as the little buggers can easily fall into the case if you're not careful. And there will be a fairly disconcerting crack when you open the iMac. Just make sure to follow the directions for a slot-loading iMac if that's what you have, the tray loading directions are listed first.

  • Keyboard scratching screen of my mac

It is the second time that it happen to my macbook pro Retina... the keyboard is in contact with the screen and the small particules scratched it... :-(
Is not a big scratch, they are like two small points in the screen without any pixel now, but how can it be possible? A machine of 2000 € is scratched by a small particule of dust because the keyboard is in contact with the screen.
Sincerelly I don't understand it, and it makes me crazy to see these 2 small points in the screen.
How can I fix it? Apple care is covering it?

Hi perefrancesk. Because of the coating on the screen you cannot repair it. I don' know if apple car will warranty this,I doubt it. You could buy a keyboard cover or cut a piece of cloth to cover the keyboard when you have your Macbook closed.

  • How backup User and reinstall osx only

My MacBook Pro (06 / 2009) running OSX 10.9 Mavericks didnt want to open completly this morning. 6 hrs later i havnt fix it. Reading and trying.
-- How to make a backup now ?
I want to save some création of mine. Last backup was 1 Month old on timemachine on external USB drive.
-- How to reinstall OSX without deleting my User files and maybe my applications Adobe ?
I have Osx 10.9 Mavericks on machine from free Apple update download. But computer came with 10.5.7 when order from Apple. Also bought 10.6 Snow Léopard  on CD.
-- What i have done so far
    Reboot. Reset. Pram. Safe mode.
    Single user #reboot
    Single user # /sbin/fsck -FN
Restart from installation CD to disk utility to verify disk
    Results : nothing
    Disk0s2: i/o error
Invalid sibling link. The volume needs to ne repaired.

I suspect it's a bad idea to boot from your Snow Léopard disk (even with the accent) to try to repair Mavericks.
You could see if your hard drive will mount on another Mac in Target mode: How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode , then you could backup your créations.
I would not backup anything more than your essential documents. If you restore system files, you will probably restore the problem.
If you haven't already: Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
    then restart.
if that doesn't work, you could try the recovery partition again and reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.
If you can't boot into your recovery partition, then try to boot into internet recovery: Hands on with Mountain Lion's OS X Recovery and Internet Recovery | Macworld , and use Disk Utility to repair your HD.  similarly, if that doesn't work, you could try to erase your HD from internet recovery and reinstall Mavericks.
if that won't work, you could try TechTool, which can occasionally fix a problem that Disk Utility can't. Techtool Pro 7
if that doesn't work, then your HD is probably failing and needs to be replaced.

  • Will deleting OS9 and reinstalling OSX make my iBook perform better.

I have a Graphite Clamshell iBook SE 466 Mhz with 320MB memory. It has the original OS9 installed. I've also added OSX (latest version is 10.2.6).
The iBook seems to be running slow and as Classic isn't used any more and hard drive space is at premium, would it be wise to delete OS9, reformat the hard disk and install OSX again? (After backing up first of course).
If so what is the best proceedure for this please?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You've already received some excellent advice but I'll just try to answer with a few links to assist:
Personally I like to have a clear out now and again (every couple of years) and re-install the OS. It's amazing how many little apps you don't use/need/want/know you've got are on your hard disk.
Panther is probably the best compromise between having the most modern OS (features and software compatibility), speed and disk space. Unfortunately trying to find a legitimate copy of Panther in the UK isn't easy. AppleRescue are the best source and UK shipping is included in that price.
You should re-install your applications from the original disks as each application is different. Some like M$ Office drag and drop okay. Others don't.
Use Firewire Target Disk Mode to connect the two machines.
Clone your iBook's hard disk to the iMac G5 or External drive. (Cloning copies all files (copy & paste or drag & drop doesn't copy all invisible files).)
Check you have this firmware installed.
Boot from the Jaguar/Panther install CD and do an Erase and Install.
    Reinstall all applications.
    Copy all files/data back.
If at any time you're not happy with the new system you can grab files off the iMac G5 and copy them back or you could even clone the whole drive back if you want to restore your system to it's current state.

P.S. Modern hard drives have larger cache and spin at a faster rate meaning simply installing a new drive will boost the speed of your iBook. Installation is a little tricky though.

  • Wipe laptop and reinstall OSX from app store??

I bought OSX Mountain Lion from the app store and now want to wipe my laptop and install the OS clean.
I have alot of random stuff on my computer that i do not want anymore. Is there some way to do this? or do i have to have a physical DVD?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Lion and Mountain Lion have got OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 This allows you to reinstall OS X without a disc.
To start from OS X Recovery, hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting. After doing it, follow these steps:
    1. Open Disk Utility, select "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    2. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
OS X Recovery will download OS X from Apple. As you purchased Mountain Lion before, you can download it as many times as you want free of charge

  • Whenever I restart, I have to download and reinstall OSX 10.7 ?

    Hello,
Recently whenever I shut down my Macpro and restart I have to download and reinstall mac OSX 10.7.(it happened twice).
I have run disk utilties and reset pram, but that doesn't seem to help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.

By default the beta version does not overwrite the release version. If you uninstall the beta just make sure that you do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data"
If you want to use both versions, or just test Firefox 4, you need to create a new profile for Firefox 4 (Firefox stores user data in the profile). Using the same profile with different versions can cause problems. Once you create a new profile you can copy certain data such as bookmarks and passwords between them. You can also use Firefox Sync to keep the profile synchronized. Finally, you will need to set up shortcuts to launch the correct profile for each version.
The following links show how to do this:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Shortcut_to_a_specific_profile
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/firefox-sync (only needed for Firefox 3.6, it is built into Firefox 4)

  • Need instructions for backup and reinstall OSX Maverick

My macbook pro is running v-e-e-r-r-r-r-r-y slowly, so I want to backup my data and reinstall the OS.  I am running Maverick 10.9.1.  Last time I tried this, there were missing passwords and other important files.  Also, when you back up data, aren't you also backing up the nasties that are causing the problems and don't you just reinstall the problem files when you restore the data?
    Thanks for lighting the way.
    M Lea

Backup using Time Machine, or a full disk clone (Disk Utility and CCC will do this for you)
Reinstall Mavericks from the recovery Partition, reinstall any apps that you need and then copy your data files back from the backup.
Don't use Migration Assistant if you suspect that you have bad settings to keep off the machine.

  • Erase and reinstall OSX server (Mountain Lion)

I would like to do an erase and reinstall of my Mac Mini Server (Fall of 2011) that now has Mountain Lion on it.  I have data on the second drive but would like to erase the primary drive and reinstall mountain Lion and mountain Lion server.
Is this possible, and if so would you point me in right direction for instructions to do this?
    Thank you

Just hold down Command-R during startup,
From there use disk utility to erase the primary drive then use the reinstall option to load up a fresh copy.
